SUMMARY:Autumn Ridge - Long Canyon Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on sticking with the group\, and completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\n\nThis hike covers some familiar ground\, but also adds a section that we haven’t done in a long time. \nWe will start at the Autumn Ridge trailhead and take the Autumn Ridge Trail to the Long Canyon East trail. We will take the Long Canyon East Trail to the end. We will then take the Montgomery Trail until it loops back and intersects with the Long Canyon East Trail. Unfortunately\, we will have to go back uphill on the Long Canyon East Trail until it intersects with the Autumn Ridge Trail. We will then return to the cars on the Autumn Ridge Trail. \nThis lollipop hike will be about 7 miles with approximately 1500 feet gain. \nThe weather looks fairly cool\, but as always\, be prepared for little shade\, bring water\, and due to the occasional steep sections\, you may want to bring your trekking poles. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. SUMMARY:Lynn Road to Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista ~ gentler friendly
DESCRIPTION:Mike is going to try again since this hike got rained out last time. \nThis is a 4-5 mile out-and-back trip from Lynn Road to the Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista. We’ll park at the playfield near Stagecoach Inn and walk from Lynn Road on the lower Rosewood Trail\, to the usual trailhead and then on up the trail. The elevation gain/loss is about 875’ – 1000’. It is a well maintained trail with lots of foliage but relatively little shade. At the top\, the picnic table at Angel Vista offers great views of the Conejo Valley\, Hidden Valley\, the White Stallion chateaus\, the Oxnard Plains\, and (on a clear day) a couple of the Channel Islands. \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: \nThis is an alternative hike for Thursday\, a little slower but maybe a bit longer. We will take the Los Robles EAST Trail (NOT WEST) and turn around at the 2 1/2 mile marker. \nWe just did the Los Robles West last week. This week we will go EAST and do an in/out of 5 miles with about 800′ of total elevation gain. If you are confused\, don’t worry and just follow me. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful\, relaxing hike. SUMMARY:Intermediate 7 mile ~ Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1300’ gain on this 7 mile adventure. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). We will take the single track trail about one-half mile to where the Angel Vista TH begins to add about an extra mile to the hike. SUMMARY:Gentler / Beginner: Kanan Dume to Latigo - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This is an easier hike for Tuesday\, another has also been posted close by\, please only sign up for one hike. This hike is only 5 miles and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.2 miles and up 600 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. This hike can include a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. I’ve heard from a reliable source that there will be some wildflowers along this route. \nThis hike has a short but steep climb at the beginning\, where we will help and encourage beginning hikers (who still should be prepared for a 150′ climb). Poles would be a good idea when returning. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. A deep “V” into a shaded cleft\, with another 450′ of descent and climb will complete the elevation loss and gain. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Let’s try Ray Miller Trail after last week’s rain. The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). SUMMARY:Fall In To the Gap - Latigo to Corral Canyon ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Today we’ll hike the Backbone Trail looking for wildflowers. We’ll begin at Latigo Canyon and walk on dirt and stuff until we reach the familiar sandstone structures of Mesa Peak Motorway. Along the way\, we’ll cross Castro Crest and descend into Upper Solstice Canyon before we climb to Mesa Peak Motorway\, at the top of Corral Canyon. \nWe’re starting high\, dipping down\, then rising again from Latigo to Castro Crest for broad views of mountains and canyons. The descent from Castro Crest is the standard chaparral-blanketed fare we’re accustomed to in this area. Once on the floor of Upper Solstice\, we’ll “ford” seasonal streams and check for the charred remnants of the previous cover. The climb up to Castro Peak Motorway becomes increasingly rocky\, so poles may prove to be useful. \nWe will return the way we came. \nTotal distance is 8.4 miles\, with 1650’ of elevation gain. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is at the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. SUMMARY:Palo Comado to the Edge of China Flat - Gentler Friendly but not Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Palo Comado (“Burnt Stick” in Spanish) tells you a lot about the environs – frequently burned over by wildfires\, this was directly in the line of the Woolsey Fire but much of the vegetation has re-grown. \nThis is one of many routes from the Conejo Valley to China Flat. Except for one turn near the trailhead\, this gentle 900′ climb\, punctuated by a 100′ climb and descent just at the start\, is uninterrupted until we get up to the top\, where we’ll rest at the bench\, turn around\, and head back. \nThis is about 6 mile hike with about 1\,000′ of elevation gain. \nUPDATE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:A second hike for Thursday\, this will be a bit slower. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the fire road up the Western Plateau. We will go straight at the crest of the fire road and then turn on the Plateau Rim loop and then return down the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Los Robles trailhead\, walking down to Las Padres and up and around
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: \nI have cancelled the hike for Newton Canyon off Kanan for Tuesday April 16\, because there was more rain that I expected and that hike takes us down into the valley and I think it will be too wet. So this is an alternative\, but we will still get in at least 5 miles. We will start in the parking lot at the end of Moorhead and walk down the street to Las Padres and go up that path\, around and all the way over to the parking lot off Greenmeadow and take the hiking path back to our parking lot at Moorpark. It’s a fun hike and this area dries out very fast so it should not be muddy. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful hike. We might even see some wild flowers. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ 8 mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. DESCRIPTION:This is an alternative hike for Tuesday\, and not quite as fast-paced as the other hike. We’re only going 5 miles to the fire road. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise down into Newton Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and we may see a flow of water from Upper Newton Falls\, especially since it may rain the weekend before. DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is at the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. We will be taking the standard route (no Fossil Trail). We may or may not get back back before dark\, so please pack a head lamp or flashlight. We will get some killer views of the 1000 Oaks and Newbury Park areas as well as Point Mugu and even the Channel Islands and Pacific Ocean on a clear day. DESCRIPTION:Okay\, we are rescheduling this trip for April 18\, the weather should be better. The water was too chopping on March 7 so they cancelled. Perhaps those who had booked for March 7 could transfer their tickets for April 18 but please contact Island Packers today. Please book your passage before you sign-up with Trailblazers\, as the boat may fill-up. \nThe trip by boat lasts a little over an hour leaving Ventura Harbor at 9:00 AM. They want us to be at the dock 45 minutes prior to departure (8:15 AM). Once we arrive on the Island\, we’ll hike 2.5 miles out to Potato Harbor via Cavern Point\, and return along Potato Harbor Road. When we reach the camp ground we’ll have lunch. The hike is very moderate and should return us in plenty of time for some sightseeing at the historic ranch\, museum\, or extra hiking into Scorpion Canyon. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:Let’s head out to the famed Peace\, Love\, Joy arch at the Danielson. This out and back hike wanders through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climbs up Danielson fire road for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. At the upper end we’ll visit the remnants of an old cabin and the Danielson Monument. The monument is dedicated to Richard Danielson\, the person who donated much of the land for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNMRA). The hike will start in SMNMRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park. SUMMARY:Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park. In the spring\, it’s spectacular with an abundance of mustard greens\, wildflowers and California poppies in addition to bountiful water in the waterfalls and creeks. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks with 27 miles of trails skittering through this area\, which includes Wildwood’s archetypal western look that served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe hike various trails with a long creek\, crossing streams and bridges\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs and waterfalls passing through desert\, meadow\, and woodland environments at various points along the way. \nWe’ll hike over 5-6 miles with approximately 1000’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. DESCRIPTION:I’m sure we will see plenty of wildflowers blooming in Dos Vientos. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about\n2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). DESCRIPTION:Hike Description (Intermediate/Strenuous)\nWe will be hiking through the eastern most portion of Malibu Creek State Park\, up to the rarely seen\, North East backside of Castro Crest – via the Bulldog fire road. The views are stunning\, all the way to the top\, with sandstone monoliths casting dramatic shadows across the land. \nThis hike starts at the easternmost (2nd) intersection of Crags Road and Seminole. We will meet there at the corner\, and then hike a short distance\, through the community further up Crags Rd before entering Malibu Creek State Park.\nPlease pay attention to the signs for permitted parking along the road\, and if you can\, carpool with someone. – an option for those who are Carpooling – meet and then carpool from Reagan Ranch parking area at Mulholland & Lake Vista Dr. As we will be entering and leaving from the Malibou Lake neighborhood trailhead\, and parking is limited\, please be considerate.\nThe hike distance is a little over 8 miles (out and back) with 2150 elevation gain. We will take our time\, pause occasionally to catch our breaths\, enjoy the views\, and finally make it to the top. SUMMARY:Kanan Dume Almost to Castro Peak OAB (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:Please follow the written directions below as the map may not be correct. \nOur Out And Back (OAB) hike will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 60-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 3 1/2 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific\, but the route eventually gives way to open hillsides and ridgelines\, and an open area over the Pacific. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 7 miles with 1550 feet of elevation gain. \nNo “Plus Ones” allowed. \nNo dogs allowed on the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel (Tunnel 1). \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through Tunnel 1\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel.
