SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:We will start in the parking lot of SMMNRA and go up to the monument. We will take this hike at a gentler pace and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up. It is an out and back\, however\, and you can go at your own pace. \nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. \nThere will be water in the creek so trekking poles may be helpful. \nDogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is poison oak at the Monument; if you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. Do NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \nAll participants must be 18 or older or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SUMMARY:Palo Comado to the Edge of China Flat - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:This will be a second Thursday hike and we will go a little slower than the other hike. \nPalo Comado (“Burnt Stick” in Spanish) tells you a lot about the environs – frequently burned over by wildfires\, this was directly in the line of the Woolsey Fire but much of the vegetation has re-grown. \nThis is one of many routes from the Conejo Valley to China Flat. Except for one turn near the trailhead\, this gentle 900′ climb\, punctuated by a 100′ climb and descent just at the start\, is uninterrupted until we get up to the top\, where we’ll rest at the bench\, turn around\, and head back. For those who are slower\, we will turn around at the 2 1/2 mile marker. \nThis is about 5-6 mile hike with about 900-1\,000′ of elevation gain. \nUPDATE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike \nNo dogs allowed. SUMMARY:Los Robles/Moorpark Trail

SUMMARY:Wildwood to Santa Rosa Trail through Box Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Let’s hike a loop through Wildwood and look for spring wildflowers. \nWildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for Davy Crocket\, The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nThis hike takes us from the main parking lot up the Santa Rosa Trail to Mount Clef Ridge\, providing sweeping views of the park\, the Santa Rosa Valley\, & maybe the Channel Islands if it’s clear. \nDescending into the valley\, we’ll pass the famed train yard\, as well as other quirky estates. \nWe will take the Box Canyon Trail and the Mesa Trail back before heading back to the parking lot. \nOur route will be approximately 6 miles and 1000 +’ of elevation gain. Much of the hike is exposed and the Box Canyon climb toward the end is work – so dress appropriately\, and make sure you have plenty of water or beverage of choice. Bring your cellphone and poles if you like them. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nWatch for cross traffic coming from the right when you turn into the parking lot- they don’t have to stop. Parking is ample and free. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Intermediate 7 mile ~ Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1300’ gain on this 7 mile adventure. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. SUMMARY:Gentler / Beginner: Kanan Dume to Latigo - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This is an easier hike for Tuesday\, another has also been posted close by\, please only sign up for one hike. This hike is only 5 miles and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.2 miles and up 600 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. This hike can include a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. I’ve heard from a reliable source that there will be some wildflowers along this route. \nThis hike has a short but steep climb at the beginning\, where we will help and encourage beginning hikers (who still should be prepared for a 150′ climb). Poles would be a good idea when returning. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. A deep “V” into a shaded cleft\, with another 450′ of descent and climb will complete the elevation loss and gain. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. Free parking is available at the trailhead. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Let’s try Ray Miller Trail after last week’s rain. The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Fall In To the Gap - Latigo to Corral Canyon ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Today we’ll hike the Backbone Trail looking for wildflowers. We’ll begin at Latigo Canyon and walk on dirt and stuff until we reach the familiar sandstone structures of Mesa Peak Motorway. Along the way\, we’ll cross Castro Crest and descend into Upper Solstice Canyon before we climb to Mesa Peak Motorway\, at the top of Corral Canyon. \nWe’re starting high\, dipping down\, then rising again from Latigo to Castro Crest for broad views of mountains and canyons. The descent from Castro Crest is the standard chaparral-blanketed fare we’re accustomed to in this area. Once on the floor of Upper Solstice\, we’ll “ford” seasonal streams and check for the charred remnants of the previous cover. The climb up to Castro Peak Motorway becomes increasingly rocky\, so poles may prove to be useful. \nWe will return the way we came. \nTotal distance is 8.4 miles\, with 1650’ of elevation gain. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list.\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike.\nPlan on sticking with the group\, and completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs please.\nBring ample hydration. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, take Kanan Dune Road south for 6.8 miles. Turn left\, heading east on Latigo Canyon Road\, and drive three miles to the unmarked dirt lot on the left. Use your odometer to gauge the distance. \nFrom PCH\, drive 7.3 miles inland on Latigo Canyon Road. After passing Upper Ramirez Motorway\, turn right into the dirt pullout at the trailhead. The parking area is unmarked\, so watch your odometer. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike hosts are volunteers and not responsible for the group. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \nThere are no “Plus One’s” on this hike. If you want to bring someone along\, have them sign up\, and make sure they’re aware of\, and agree to\, this disclaimer. \nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. Park along the right side of the road and we will meet in front of the marked China Flats Trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Los Robles trailhead\, walking down to Las Padres and up and around
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: \nI have cancelled the hike for Newton Canyon off Kanan for Tuesday April 16\, because there was more rain that I expected and that hike takes us down into the valley and I think it will be too wet. So this is an alternative\, but we will still get in at least 5 miles. We will start in the parking lot at the end of Moorhead and walk down the street to Las Padres and go up that path\, around and all the way over to the parking lot off Greenmeadow and take the hiking path back to our parking lot at Moorpark. It’s a fun hike and this area dries out very fast so it should not be muddy. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful hike. We might even see some wild flowers. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. Go to the end of Moorpark but don’t turn down Greenmeadow\, just park at the end of Moorpark. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list \nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike \nNo dogs \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ 8 mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station & Rattle Snake Road. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Fig Newton Canyon (off Kanan Road) to fire road
DESCRIPTION:This is an alternative hike for Tuesday\, and not quite as fast-paced as the other hike. We’re only going 5 miles to the fire road. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise down into Newton Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and we may see a flow of water from Upper Newton Falls\, especially since it may rain the weekend before. Once we hit the fire road we will turn around for a total of 5 miles with about 900’+ total elevation gain. \nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \nYou must be on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nExit 101\, then go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1).
