SUMMARY:Intermediate 7-8 mile ~ Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1300’ gain on this 7-8 mile adventure. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike with the group\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. SUMMARY:Revisiting Cheseboro Ridge Trail - Gentler 5 miles\, 800'
DESCRIPTION:Since our visit here in March\, the hills above Calabasas have become lush\, brilliant green\, and bright yellow with mustard\, benefitting from the recent rains. This out-and-back hike offers a little-used access route to Cheseboro Ridge\, which runs above our typical Sheep Corral hike. A combination of graded gravel and single-track trail ascends steadily to a high point with great visibility to Bell Canyon\, Hidden Hills\, Cheseboro Canyon\, and Mount Boney in the distance. The wildflowers are in bloom\, if you can shove aside the mustard far enough to see them. Last year’s patches of calabash gourds are scattered across the hillsides. \nLunch afterwards will be at the restaurants in the northwest corner of the little strip mall at Agoura Road and Las Virgenes\, including Mediterranean Pita Grill and Sharky’s. \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Morrison Ranch Road Trailhead is NOT at the north end of Las Virgenes\, but rather\, only 6/10 mile north of the 101 interchange\, a half-mile north of the fire station\, and at the northern end of a white fence. Set your GPS for 5526 Las Virgenes Road\, Calabasas. If you’ve got to Thousand Oaks Boulevard\, you’ve gone too far. Look for my Prius on the west side of the street. You may need to do a legal U-turn to park nearest the trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike hosts are volunteers and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Sulphur Mountain’s Majesty
DESCRIPTION:This will probably be the last day we can do this hike until winter because it is getting hotter. There is a new restaurant in Oak View for lunch\, Noa’s. This hike goes up Sulpher Road through petroleum-scented oak forest\, through the cattle grazing ranch land at the top to the overlook above the town of Oak View. We’ll have spectacular views of the Ojai Valley\, Lake Casitas\, and the mountains to the north. Our gently-sloping route will be approximately 6 miles\, with about 500’ of elevation. \nParking is limited on Sulphur Mountain Road\, and it’s well outside our typical hiking area\, so carpooling is encouraged! \nLunch afterwards at Noa’s Cafe\, a mile north on 33\, on the right. (formerly J&M Cafe) \nOur usual restrictions apply – no plus-ones; no dogs; only show up if you’re on the “Attending” list.

SUMMARY:Lang Ranch to China Flat - Intermediate Hike at 8:30 am
DESCRIPTION:Please Note 8:30 start time! \nWe will respect the warmer temperatures predicted for the coming week by starting at 8:30 and only going to China Flat instead of Simi Peak (though you’re welcome to do so on your own). \nThe hike is a 6.5 mile out & back with 1\,500′ of elevation gain from Lang Ranch parkway to China Flat. If you do the extension to Simi Peak\, that adds another 1.5 miles and 300′ of elevation gain. Our route is principally on the Albertson Fire Road\, which goes from the trailhead eastward all the way to Upper Las Virgenes Canyon\, and is a favorite route for hikers and mountain bikers alike. We’ll turn off this hilly fire road after about three miles and head south for about a quarter of a mile\, on a single track trail\, to a site well-known to Marty McFly and Doc Brown. If you choose to continue\, on your own\, you’ll cross China Flats and then up to the commanding views of 2400-foot Simi Peak. \nThe Albertson Fire Road is an especially scenic route in both directions\, rising up above the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offering westward views of the Pacific and offshore islands. China Flats was the site of Back to the Future 3’s wild west scenes. We will enjoy breath-taking views of the Simi Valley\, Moorpark\, and Bard Reservoir. If you continue on your own to Simi Peak\, you’ll add view of the Conejo Valley\, San Fernando Valley\, Oxnard Plains\, Pacific Ocean\, and the Channel Islands. \nThis hike is exposed almost the entire way\, and the sun has a way of sneaking up on you even on a temperate day. Bring plenty of water and portable shade. \nFree on-street parking is available at the trailhead. \nDirections:\nTake the 101 toward Thousand Oaks. Highlights of the hike an Indian cave\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take the fire road to Lynmere Trail. We will take a short break at the halfway point on Lynmere Trails. On the way back we may go by the Indian Cave. We’ll pass through various trails with On bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for relief from the heat for approximately 7+ miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Hopefully it will be cooler at the beach and we are starting at 8:30. The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nIf you find that you can’t go\, change your RSVP to “Not Going” to allow someone else to take your spot.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. DESCRIPTION:Note 8:30am start time! \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 6.0 miles with 1\,000 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours\, but this is not a beginner hike. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group\, not too fast and not too slow! \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet near the tennis courts to the left. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions.\nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers.\nThere are no “Plus One’s” on this hike. SUMMARY:Upper Stunt High Trail To Saddle Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The “Featured photo” was taken at the Saddle Peak after the Pacific Palisades fire. I also added a photo previously taken at the same location. Let’s go to see how the fire changed the area. \nThis hike begins at Upper Stunt High Trail\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about 5 miles round-trip with 1O00-1100 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go just past the 1.94 mile marker at the entrance to the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve\, park and meet in the asphalt pullout on the right. \nFrom the PCH – turn up Malibu Canyon Road and drive 6.5 miles to Mulholland Highway. Turn right and continue 4 miles to Stunt Road. Go just past the 1.94 mile marker at the entrance to the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve\, park and meet in the asphalt pullout on the right. \nPlease review the guidelines to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace(>2.5MPH).\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Powerline Trail to Conejo Peak - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will hike the Powerline Trail to Conejo Peak\, including a brief stop at the “teardrop” loop below the final climb to the peak. Great views of the Pacific\, Channel Islands\, Oxnard Plain\, Conejo Valley\, and (if clear) snow-covered Mt. Baldy and peaks east and north. \nThis area was completely burned over by the 2013 Springs Fire\, and the peak area saw a small wildfire in 2020\, but has recovered well. The Edison road is rocky\, and has some washouts from this year’s rains. There is one short but steep section of the Edison road just before the teardrop loop and our even steeper “goat trail” climb to the peak. \nWith the climb to the peak this hike is 6.2 miles\, with an elevation gain of 1\,350 feet. Trekking poles are recommended\, as our descent will be fairly steep over loose gravel. \nIf you elect to skip the peak\, the hike is just over 5 miles\, with an elevation gain of 850 feet. \nWe’ll start at Dos Vientos Community Park\, cross Via Ricardo\, walk over the hill above the Camarillo quarry (watch for the “Unstable Ground – Gravitational Anomalies” sign)\, and then up the Powerline Trail. We’ll zig-zag up to the “teardrop”\, and continue the climb like the mountain goats we are\, and then traverse the rocky meadow at the top to the peak\, where we will gather around the (now missing) flagpole for a photo\, and inspect the set of new lead-acid batteries someone has deposited there. We’ll carefully descend through the rocky cleft back to the Powerline Trail where we’ll rejoin our compatriots\, and descend to the cars. \nDirections \nGoogle and Apple Maps direction are reliable. \nFrom the east\, exit 101 at Borchard\, and drive southwest 3.5 miles to Dos Vientos Community Park\, the second right-hand turn after the hilly pass from Newbury Park into Dos Vientos. Park in our usual spot for hiking is Dos Vientos.. \nFrom the west\, exit 101 at Wendy\, and drive south 0.9 miles to Borchard. Turn right onto Borchard\, and drive 2.3 miles to the park\, then follow directions\, above. \nFrom Port Hueneme\, Point Mugu\, and Oxnard\, drive up Potrero Road\, which turns into Lynn at the top of the canyon. Turn left onto Via Las Brisas\, then drive north for 1.4 miles. Turn right onto Borchard\, then immediately left into the park. \nBoots on at 8:45\, ready to hike for a 9:00 a.m. departure! \nPlease do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis challenging hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. Park along the right side of the road and we will meet in front of the marked China Flats Trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Kanan Dume to Latigo ~
DESCRIPTION:This hike should still be fairly cool and we can meet the other hiking group for lunch on Kanan. We will go a bit slower than the other hike. We will start on Kanan at Newton Canyon and hike to Latigo Canyon Rd. It is a little steep at the beginning but then turns into a nice hike. This hike is only 5 about miles with about 900’ gain and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone trail. \nPlease only sign up for one hike. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road\, there is a bit of a climb at first and then it levels out\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.5 miles and up 900 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. Along the hike\, you can take a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). SUMMARY:Say Cheeseboro Canyon to Palo Comado Canyon ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/0/4/event_85459972.jpeg \nTucked along the 101 in Agoura is the northernmost section of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Echoing its not-so-distant past of ranching\, the rolling hills and shady canyons are popular with equestrians. Before the ranchers\, Chumash Indians and grizzly bears tromped out the slender trails in the native grasses that became today’s open fire roads. Rabbits\, bobcats\, owls\, hawks\, deer\, and coyotes still call the sycamores\, oaks\, streams\, and sulfur springs of the canyons home. Cheeseboro Canyon is home to the largest concentration of birds of prey outside of Alaska\, as well as the Valley Oak\, the largest oak trees in the US (possibly the world!). \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/2/c/event_85460012.jpeg \nOur 7 mile hike will carve a loop pattern out of the network of trails and connect Cheeseboro Canyon to adjacent Palo Comado Canyon before returning us to our cars. The trails are mostly wide\, sometimes shaded\, sometimes open to a glorious\, blanketing sky. Total elevation is 1350′\, broken up as we climb over from one canyon to the next. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/3/6/event_85460022.jpeg \nUPDATE: Please review the revised guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nFrom LA and east of Agoura- exit the 101 at Chesebro Rd and turn right at the top of the ramp (Palo Comado Rd). Turn right almost immediately onto Chesebro Rd and drive .7 mile to the park entrance\, on the right (right after the equestrian field). Go through the first parking lot to the second one. \nFrom Westlake Village and west of Agoura- exit the 101 at Chesebro Rd. Go through the stop sign at the end of the ramp\, and turn left at the next one (Palo Comado Rd). Cross the freeway\, and turn right onto Chesebro Rd. Drive .7 mile to the park entrance\, on the right (right after the equestrian field). Go through the first parking lot to the second one. \n*The exit is Chesebro Rd\, the access road into the park is Cheeseboro Canyon Rd.

SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be Gentler Intermediate and Earlier of the Tuesday hikes!\nThe trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Rancho Potrero Ridgeline - sorta Gentler (5 miles ±900')
DESCRIPTION:Note that this is a different start than the usual Rancho Sierra Vista Parking Lot!! Read carefully!! We have not done this hike for a while. \nWe will meet at the Rancho Potrero COSCA trailhead parking area just west of the Equestrian Center on Lynn / Potrero. Pay attention as this is different than the Parking Lot where we often meet. \nThis will be a loop through the COSCA trails west of RSV\, climbing to the ridgeline above Sycamore Canyon to the south and Lynn Road to the north. Lots of ups and downs until we briefly visit the Satwiwa Interpretive Center for water and bathroom break. From there\, the route back to the cars comprises less elevation gain and loss. \nCurrently\, the weather forecast for Thursday is foggy in the morning\, clearing about the time we’re done\, with a high (!) of 70°. As always\, bring plenty of water\, wide hat\, sturdy shoes or boots and hiking poles if you favor them. \nTotal distance is roughly 5 miles\, with about 900′ of elevation gain and loss. Other than the fog\, there is little shade during this hike. \nNote that this is a gentler hike but not a beginner hike. It is a convoluted trail with some steep sections\, so we will pause occasionally to try to keep the group together. We will go about 2.5mph. Tricky turns will be marked. \nDirections: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Lynn Road\, and drive 6.5 miles southwest. You will cross Ventu Park\, Wendy\, and Reino and pass the two entrances to the Equestrian Center before getting to the COSCA Rancho Potrero Trailhead lot on the left. If you get to the top of the canyon towards CSUCI\, you’ve gone too far! \nLunch Afterwards: Three Amigos on Reino Road in Newbury Park \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Upper Sycamore Canyon Loop - Gentler Hike.
DESCRIPTION:We are starting at 9:00 (it will be cooler and there are lots of trees) and start at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot. We go down to paved road to the bridge on Sycamore Canyon\, but then turn up the canyon alongside Upper Sycamore Creek. Along the way\, we’ll be in the shade of Boney Mountain while we climb\, doing a handful of easy water crossings and (if we’re lucky this late in the season) finding a few wildflowers along the way. We’ll get to the Old Boney Trail\, and climb back up and out. \nThis hike is about 5 miles with an elevation loss and gain of approximately 750’. \nDirections: Take 101 Freeway to Lynn Road. Go south 5.5 miles to the wood and stone archway for Rancho Sierra Vista\, and drive all the way in to the restrooms (the innermost parking lot). Google / Apple Maps will lead you astray! \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.
