SUMMARY:After the Rain - Sycamore Canyon Asphalt Hike (Again) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Once again (again!) because of this week’s rain\, we will avoid mud as much as possible and protect out local trails with an asphalt / gravel route. We’ll meet near the bathrooms in the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, then hike down Sycamore Canyon to the Danielson Multi-Use Area\, then returning on Sycamore Canyon back to the cars. \nThis out and back hike will be about 6 miles with about 700 feet of elevation loss and gain\, including the nasty climb out near the end. \nOur usual conditions and restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus One’s” on this hike\nNo dogs on this or any other Weekday Trailblazers hike\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\n\nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. No dogs. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers.

SUMMARY:China Flat & Simi Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins from the top of King James Court\, a cul-de-sac off Lindero Canyon Road. Begin up the trail at the top of the road\, passing through a gate by a sign that reads “China Flat Trail Head.” It will pass through the branch of Suicide Trail and another branch of China Flat Trail. Stay to the left as Simi Peak Trail heads west\, gradually ascending through more oak savanna on China Flat. The Santa Monica Mountains stand tall on the far side of the valley\, stretching to the east and west about as far as can be seen.\nThis hike is about 5 1/2 miles out and back with approximately 1200’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: Take the 101 Freeway to exit 39 in Westlake Village and head north on Lindero Canyon Road. Drive 3.7 miles and turn left up King James Court (which is 0.9 miles past Kanan Road). Go a tenth of a mile up to the trailhead at the end of the road and park. \nPLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY\nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. At Lynn turn right\, then left at Reino\, which turns into Potrero Road. Take Potrero to Pinehill and turn right and park (Do not park on Potereo as you need a permit). SUMMARY:Oak Creek Canyon to Robles West In/Out ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Oak Creek Canyon Trail is a rather special trail in Los Robles Open Space that is designed for the blind as well as the sighted. The all-access trail is shaded by a canopy of oaks\, while the loop trail spends more time in the chaparral.\nWe will start at Oak Creek Canyon and proceed to a connector trail a short distance until we meet a junction with Los Robles Trail West (AKA “Space Mountain”). “Space Mountain” gets its name from the switchbacks. You’ll travel through a couple of very nice oak groves\, and get some great views throughout in the Robles Open Space. Then\, we will turn around right before a steep downhill section with sharp switchbacks (prior to where the trail crosses a private road) and head back to our cars. \nThis hike will be about 5-6 miles In/Out with approximately 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: From the 101 freeway\, drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go a half mile to the parking lot. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Talepop CCW Loop - A Gentler Hike 4.2 miles ±500 feet
DESCRIPTION:When I pre-hiked the route on Sunday morning\, I encountered a fairly squishy trail\, but with clear weather prior to Thursday\, it should be fine. As in the past\, I saw four or five deer\, lots of ravens\, some vultures\, and lots of deer and coyote prints. I did see a couple of prints that looked suspiciously ursine\, but no face-to-muzzle encounters 🙂 \nWe’ll start at Juan Bautista De Anza Park\, at the corner of Lost Hills and Las Virgenes. We’ll hike up the Talepop Trail\, along the ridgeline between Liberty and Malibu Canyons\, down to the North Meadowlands Trail\, then gently back up the Las Virgenes Fire Road\, back to the park. The total distance is 4.2 miles\, with an elevation gain and loss of about 500 feet. \nWhile relatively short\, this is a gorgeous hike\, with sightlines into Malibu Creek State Park\, into the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area\, and across to the area that is south of the new wildlife bridge. \nDIRECTIONS\nExit 101 at Lost Hills Road\, and drive south one mile. Just before getting to Las Virgenes Road\, turn right into the De Anza Park parking lot. There are restrooms adjacent to the parking lot. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Evening Hike
DESCRIPTION:The rain is expected to stop in the morning. Will keep an eye on the weather. Otherwise rain will cancel it. \nPLEASE NOTE THE PARKING/MEETUP LOCATION ABOVE (IT’S NOT WENDY & POTRERO). Do not park on Potrero Road as it is for residents only. Take a right at the stop sign on Potrero Road and park on Pinehill Avenue or Greenwood Street. \nDue to the rains we will be going down Sycamore Canyon as an out and back. \nHike will be 6 miles\, and about 1150 ft. up. Pace will be fast\, although others who want to come and are slower will be met on the way back. As in the past we will head down the paved Sycamore Canyon Road and drop into the canyon. We will turn back before the campground as the road usually gets muddy right before the turnoff. We’ll take a quick break and back up the Sycamore Canyon Road to our cars. \nDIRECTIONS: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy. At Lynn turn right\, then left at Reino\, which turns into Potrero Road. Take Potrero to Pinehill and turn right and park (Do not park on Potereo as you need a permit). Walk back along Potrero to its intersection with Big Sycamore Canyon Road that is more or less across from 4153 Potrero Road. We will start hike there. There are no restrooms at the trailhead\, but there is one on our hike. \nNo dogs are allowed. \nEssentials : \nBring water\, and your cellphone\, a headlamp or flashlight. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \n** Anyone 18 yrs. or younger must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SUMMARY:Lang Ranch / Albertson Motorway - China Flat Pond
DESCRIPTION:This is a 6- 7 mile out and back hike with about 1150’ of elevation gain from Lang Ranch Parkway in Westlake Village on the Albertsons Motorway. Our route on the Albertson Fire Road\, which goes from the trailhead eastward all the way to Upper Las Virgenes Canyon\, and is a favorite route for hikers and mountain bikers alike. The trail is mostly a gently climbing\, well-travelled fireroad\, with a section of broad singletrack. When we get to China Flat\, we will make a right onto Palo Comado trail and go approximately 1/2 mile to see how much water is in the China Flat pond. After taking a short break at the pond\, we will return to the cars. \nStatistics: 6-7 miles with about 1150’ of climbing. \nThe Albertson Fire Road is an especially scenic route in both directions\, rising up above the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offering westward views of the Pacific and offshore islands. \nThis hike is exposed almost the entire way\, and the sun has a way of sneaking up on you even on a temperate day. Bring plenty of water and portable shade. \nFree on-street parking is available at the trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the East\, West & South – take the 101 toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.1 miles and turn right on the Lang Ranch Parkway. Continue 0.8 miles and park where the Lang Ranch Parkway makes a sharp left. \nFrom the North – take the 23 south toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at the Avenida De Los Arboles exit and turn left (east) on Avenida De Los Arboles. Drive 1.5 miles and turn right on Westlake Boulevard. Drive 0.2 miles and turn left on the Lang Ranch Parkway. Continue 0.8 miles and park where the Lang Ranch Parkway makes a sharp left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Alt Intermediate Hike: Autumn Ridge to Woodridge Loop
DESCRIPTION:This double-loop route is a bisecting circumnavigation of the Lang Ranch Open Space. From the Autumn Ridge trailhead (end of North Westlake Blvd) we’ll pick up the Sunrise Trail which climbs up and and along ridge overlooking Wood Ranch. After crossing the Long Canyon junction we’ll rollercoaster down and up and down the Meadow Vista Trail with sweeping views of the Woodridge Open Space (and our old friend the Albertson Motorway). We’ll jump on Albertson Motorway to Long Ridge Trail which returns us\, via Alapay and Autumn Ridge trails\, to our starting point. \nTotal mileage for our double-loop adventure is just over 6 miles with 1\,400 foot elevation gain/loss. This route is exposed and steep at points (mainly the start to Sunrise trail) so bring plenty of water\, wear sturdy shoes and trekking poles if you use them. \nTo get to the trailhead\, exit 101 at Westlake Boulevard\, and drive north until it dead-ends at the transition between Oak Valley Lane and Autumn Ridge Drive. This is about a half-mile north of Lang Ranch Parkway (Chumash Museum)\, but offers an alternative entry into this area. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s see if we can find any wildflowers out in Dos Vientos yet? \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet by the tennis courts to the left.\nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Walk around the Ponds at Ventura Harbor
DESCRIPTION:NOTE THE LATE START TIME OF 10:00 AM \nThe ponds at the Ventura Harbor are a bird lover’s paradise. There will be no elevation gain and not much mileage\, but the abundance of birds will make up for the lack of exercise. \nThere are many places to eat later in the harbor\, but I like Andria’s Seafood. We can meet in the parking lot of Andria’s at 1449 Spinnaker Drive. Follow the same directions as for Island Packers\, but much closer to Harbor Blvd. \nThe entrance to the ponds is at Spinnaker Dr. and Angler Ct.\, across from the parking lot. \nFeel free to bring anyone you want\, as there is no limit.

SUMMARY:Parker Mesa Overlook with optional extension - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:School traffic and traffic on Topanga Canyon Blvd can make the drive longer than you expect\, so please allow enough travel time! \nTopanga State Park is 36 square miles of natural wonder ensconced within Los Angeles’ city limits. Starting at Trippet Ranch\, we’ll ramble through a shady oak grove favored by mule deer and into stretches of grassland. \nBeyond the ranch\, the trail begins to rise along the ridgeline between Topanga and Santa Ynez Canyons. Giant slabs of sandstone mark the route to their former home beneath the Pacific Ocean.\nWhen the rising is done\, we’ll rest on Parker Mesa Overlook\, with the entire LA Basin stretched below us\, the majestic San Gabriel Mountains to our north\, Catalina Island to the south\, and the sweeping crescent of the Santa Monica coastline to the east. \nThis is about a 6.7 mile out and back hike\, with 1200’ feet of elevation gain. We will add an optional extension midway up of roughly 0.7 mile to make it (sort of) an even 8 miles. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, exit at Topanga Canyon Boulevard (CA 27)\, drive south over the crest of the mountains and proceed three miles to Entrada Road (not Entrado!) and turn left. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park’s main parking lot (about one mile) \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway\, travel north on Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, pass the post office at the center of “town\,” then turn right on Entrada Road. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park’s main parking lot (about one mile). \nParking is $10.00/$9.00 for seniors (exact change\, although I think they take cc) in Park. There is some street parking (free) outside of the park on the road. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Palo Comado to the Edge of China Flat - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:This will be a second Thursday hike and we will go a little slower than the other hike. \nPalo Comado (“Burnt Stick” in Spanish) tells you a lot about the environs – frequently burned over by wildfires\, this was directly in the line of the Woolsey Fire but much of the vegetation has re-grown. \nThis is one of many routes from the Conejo Valley to China Flat. Except for one turn near the trailhead\, this gentle 900′ climb\, punctuated by a 100′ climb and descent just at the start\, is uninterrupted until we get up to the top\, where we’ll rest at the bench\, turn around\, and head back. For those who are slower\, we will turn around at the 2 1/2 mile marker. \nThis is about 5-6 mile hike with about 900-1\,000′ of elevation gain. \nUPDATE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike \nNo dogs allowed. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Upper Stunt High Trail To Saddle Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Upper Stunt High Trail\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about 5 miles round-trip with 1100 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go just past the 1.94 mile marker at the entrance to the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve\, park and meet in the asphalt pullout on the right. \nFrom the PCH – turn up Malibu Canyon Road and drive 6.5 miles to Mulholland Highway. Turn right and continue 4 miles to Stunt Road. Go just past the 1.94 mile marker at the entrance to the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve\, park and meet in the asphalt pullout on the right. \nPlease review the guidelines (https://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.
