SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) from Tapia ~ 8:00 start!
DESCRIPTION:We will start this hike into MCSP from Tapia Park. The Tapia Park entrance is just before the Piuma intersection. Note: a day use fee (machine at entrance) is required if you don’t have a State Park Pass. After you enter Tapia\, follow the signs to Salvation Army Camp & Conference Center. It’s about 0.4 mile to the Salvation Army Camp entrance. Park on the right side of the road (lined pull-in parking stalls). \nOur hike starts on the Tapia Spur trail\, which winds through a lovely chaparral “forest” and drops down onto the road by the park’s group campground. We’ll follow the campground road to the main trailhead (Crags/High Road). Crags Road runs along and above Malibu Creek. The water level has dropped enough to allow a dry crossing of the creek to Mott’s Road\, which leads to the Chaparrel trail. The Chaparrel trail climbs up and over the ridge behind the MCSP Visitor’s Center. From there we’ll cross the “big” bridge to Crags Road which will take us to the shaded east end of Century Lake. Next we will use the Cage trail to access the Overlook trail loop with panoramic views of MCSP’s “central valley”. We’ll return to the Tapia Spur trail along the shaded northern side of Malibu Creek. \nThis out-and-back hike clocks in at around 6.5 miles\, with an elevation gain/loss of about 950‘. I have timed this hike at 3 hours to allow a leisurely pace in anticipation of warmer weather. \nDirections: From the 101 Freeway take Las Virgenes Rd.\, south for 4.8 miles to the Tapia Park entrance (south of main MCSP entrance). \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly Hike (Not a Beginner's Hike)
DESCRIPTION:Note 8:00 am start time! Beat the heat with an earlier start! \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, going behind Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 6.0 miles with 1\,000 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours\, but this is not a beginner hike. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group\, not too fast and not too slow! \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet near the tennis courts to the left. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Kanan Dume to Latigo ~ Gentler Friendly - Not Beginner
DESCRIPTION:We will start on Kanan at Newton Canyon and hike to Latigo Canyon Rd. It is a little steep at the beginning but then turns into a nice hike. This hike is about 6 miles with about 1000’ gain and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone trail. \nPlease only sign up for one hike. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road\, there is a bit of a climb at first and then it levels out\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. Along the hike\, you can take a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Overlooking Sycamore Canyon - an Intermediate\, Cooler Hike
DESCRIPTION:Just off the ocean\, Sycamore Canyon is a wide\, seemingly flat stroll among grasses\, wildflower\, and sycamore trees\, surrounded by mountains on both sides. \nRather than letting that lull you into a false sense of complacency\, we’ll take a left turn just after we start\, and hike up the southern fork of Overlook Trail to its intersection with the top of the Ray Miller Trail\, then back down to Sycamore Canyon\, and maybe up the canyon a little further for a total of 7.5 miles and 1\,200 feet of elevation gain and loss\, more or less. Hiker’s choice! \nWe’re almost certain to spy (and hear) wild parakeets along our route. Far from the petite parakeets we’re familiar with\, these birds closely resemble their parrot cousins. There are several stories floating around about their origin\, including that they were released from the old LA Zoo\, but we certainly know where they are now. \nDirections: \nGet yourself onto PCH\, near the Port Hueneme end of Malibu. You can take Kanan Rd and turn right on PCH\, or Las Posas Rd and turn left on PCH\, whichever works best for you. \nThe trailhead is located 5 miles south/east of Point Mugu off of Pacific Coast Highway (between Point Mugu and Neptune’s Net)\, in the Sycamore Canyon campground (across from Sycamore Canyon Beach). The address listed is approximate\, just to get you in the general area – turn onto Sycamore Canyon Rd. away from the ocean and head to the day use parking lot. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit)\, so you may want to carpool. Free parking may be available on PCH\, 1/4 mile from the campground – allow a few extra minutes if you park on PCH. \nSee you there! \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike hosts are volunteers and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Group event\, you are releasing the Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. You take personal responsibility for keeping up with the group\, or finding your way back to the trailhead and your own transportation in case you lose sight of the other hikers. \nYour personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. \nSorry\, no dogs\, or Plus Ones on this event. We’ll be hiking on State Park land (where dogs are not allowed). By now\, your friends should already have registered for The Weekday Trailblazers\, and can sign up on their own.

SUMMARY:Arroyo Canyon Trail to Lynnmere Trail ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start by following the pleasant single-track on the left (not the road to the right\, which descends to a dead-end at the creek) from the Rancho Conejo Playfields in Newbury Park. The trail skirts the edge of a neighborhood and its steep-walled canyon\, which provides great scenic views along the Barranca and through riparian native plant communities\, Wildwood Park\, and the Pacific Ocean. There is a creek crossing with rocks and wood pallets to make “dry crossing” easy when we reach the bottom of the canyon. Then\, we will turn right at a T-junction and begin a steady climb out of the canyon to the Lynnmere Trail. The trail passes the backs of some houses\, dips into a woodland\, and emerges into a meadow where we get a panoramic view to the west. Here\, we will retrace our way back to the Arroyo Conejo Trail and back to the parking lot.\nThis hike is about 5 miles long with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections:\nFrom 101 Freeway\, drive 1/4 mile north on Ventu Park Rd. Turn right into the parking lot at the Rancho Conejo Playfields (at 950 N. Ventu Park Road) and the Arroyo Conejo trailhead is on the right. \nPlease Review The Guidelines to join our hikes: Here is some highlights for your safety and ours;
• Don’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.
• Plan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\n
DISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY
The hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.
Outdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. We go down to paved road to the bridge on Sycamore Canyon\, but then turn up the canyon alongside Upper Sycamore Creek. SUMMARY:Rancho Potrero Ridgeline - sorta Gentler (5 miles ±900')
DESCRIPTION:Note that this is a different start than the usual Rancho Sierra Vista Parking Lot!! Read carefully!! We have not done this hike for a while. \nWe will meet at the Rancho Potrero COSCA trailhead parking area just west of the Equestrian Center on Lynn / Potrero. Pay attention as this is different than the Parking Lot where we often meet. \nThis will be a loop through the COSCA trails west of RSV\, climbing to the ridgeline above Sycamore Canyon to the south and Lynn Road to the north. Lots of ups and downs until we briefly visit the Satwiwa Interpretive Center for water and bathroom break. From there\, the route back to the cars comprises less elevation gain and loss. \nCurrently\, the weather forecast for Thursday is foggy in the morning\, clearing about the time we’re done\, with a high (!) of 70°. As always\, bring plenty of water\, wide hat\, sturdy shoes or boots and hiking poles if you favor them. \nTotal distance is roughly 5 miles\, with about 900′ of elevation gain and loss. Other than the fog\, there is little shade during this hike. \nNote that this is a gentler hike but not a beginner hike. It is a convoluted trail with some steep sections\, so we will pause occasionally to try to keep the group together. We will go about 2.5mph. Tricky turns will be marked. \nDirections: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Lynn Road\, and drive 6.5 miles southwest. You will cross Ventu Park\, Wendy\, and Reino and pass the two entrances to the Equestrian Center before getting to the COSCA Rancho Potrero Trailhead lot on the left. If you get to the top of the canyon towards CSUCI\, you’ve gone too far! \nLunch Afterwards: Three Amigos on Reino Road in Newbury Park \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park is one of our most versatile local parks\, with 27 miles of trails traversing rocky volcanic cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Wildwood’s western look served as backdrop for TV classics such as The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train. \nWe will meet at Wildwood’s main parking lot. This looping hike will start at the Moonridge Trail\, cross onto the Stagecoach Bluff Trail towards Lizard Rock\, then down the Lizard Rock Trail to the water treatment plant where we pick up the Wildwood Canyon Trail\, crossing streams and tree canopies on the way to Paradise Falls. Upstream of the falls\, Indian Creek (Two Springs) Trail takes us back up to the main parking lot and completes our “Central Park” loop. This hike is approximately 5 miles with about a 800’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace**\,** or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Say Cheeseboro Canyon to Palo Comado Canyon ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/0/4/event_85459972.jpeg \nTucked along the 101 in Agoura is the northernmost section of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Echoing its not-so-distant past of ranching\, the rolling hills and shady canyons are popular with equestrians. Before the ranchers\, Chumash Indians and grizzly bears tromped out the slender trails in the native grasses that became today’s open fire roads. Rabbits\, bobcats\, owls\, hawks\, deer\, and coyotes still call the sycamores\, oaks\, streams\, and sulfur springs of the canyons home. Cheeseboro Canyon is home to the largest concentration of birds of prey outside of Alaska\, as well as the Valley Oak\, the largest oak trees in the US (possibly the world!). \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/2/c/event_85460012.jpeg \nOur 7 mile hike will carve a loop pattern out of the network of trails and connect Cheeseboro Canyon to adjacent Palo Comado Canyon before returning us to our cars. The trails are mostly wide\, sometimes shaded\, sometimes open to a glorious\, blanketing sky. Total elevation is 1350′\, broken up as we climb over from one canyon to the next. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/3/6/event_85460022.jpeg \nUPDATE: Please review the revised guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nFrom LA and east of Agoura- exit the 101 at Chesebro Rd and turn right at the top of the ramp (Palo Comado Rd). Turn right almost immediately onto Chesebro Rd and drive .7 mile to the park entrance\, on the right (right after the equestrian field). Go through the first parking lot to the second one. \nFrom Westlake Village and west of Agoura- exit the 101 at Chesebro Rd. Go through the stop sign at the end of the ramp\, and turn left at the next one (Palo Comado Rd). Cross the freeway\, and turn right onto Chesebro Rd. Drive .7 mile to the park entrance\, on the right (right after the equestrian field). SUMMARY:Powerline Trail to Conejo Peak - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will hike the Powerline Trail to Conejo Peak\, including a brief stop at the “teardrop” loop below the final climb to the peak. Great views of the Pacific\, Channel Islands\, Oxnard Plain\, Conejo Valley\, and (if clear) snow-covered Mt. Baldy and peaks east and north. \nThis area was completely burned over by the 2013 Springs Fire\, and the peak area saw a small wildfire in 2020\, but has recovered well. The Edison road is rocky\, and has some washouts from this year’s rains. There is one short but steep section of the Edison road just before the teardrop loop and our even steeper “goat trail” climb to the peak. \nWith the climb to the peak this hike is 6.2 miles\, with an elevation gain of 1\,350 feet. Trekking poles are recommended\, as our descent will be fairly steep over loose gravel. \nIf you elect to skip the peak\, the hike is just over 5 miles\, with an elevation gain of 850 feet. \nWe’ll start at Dos Vientos Community Park\, cross Via Ricardo\, walk over the hill above the Camarillo quarry (watch for the “Unstable Ground – Gravitational Anomalies” sign)\, and then up the Powerline Trail. We’ll zig-zag up to the “teardrop”\, and continue the climb like the mountain goats we are\, and then traverse the rocky meadow at the top to the peak\, where we will gather around the (now missing) flagpole for a photo\, and inspect the set of new lead-acid batteries someone has deposited there. We’ll carefully descend through the rocky cleft back to the Powerline Trail where we’ll rejoin our compatriots\, and descend to the cars. \nDirections \nGoogle and Apple Maps direction are reliable. \nFrom the east\, exit 101 at Borchard\, and drive southwest 3.5 miles to Dos Vientos Community Park\, the second right-hand turn after the hilly pass from Newbury Park into Dos Vientos. Park in our usual spot for hiking is Dos Vientos.. \nFrom the west\, exit 101 at Wendy\, and drive south 0.9 miles to Borchard. Turn right onto Borchard\, and drive 2.3 miles to the park\, then follow directions\, above. \nFrom Port Hueneme\, Point Mugu\, and Oxnard\, drive up Potrero Road\, which turns into Lynn at the top of the canyon. Turn left onto Via Las Brisas\, then drive north for 1.4 miles. Turn right onto Borchard\, then immediately left into the park. \nBoots on at 8:45\, ready to hike for a 9:00 a.m. departure! \nPlease do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. SUMMARY:Upper Stunt High Trail To Saddle Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The “Featured photo” was taken at the Saddle Peak after the Pacific Palisades fire. I also added a photo previously taken at the same location. Let’s go to see how the fire changed the area. \nThis hike begins at Upper Stunt High Trail\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about 5 miles round-trip with 1O00-1100 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go just past the 1.94 mile marker at the entrance to the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve\, park and meet in the asphalt pullout on the right. \nFrom the PCH – turn up Malibu Canyon Road and drive 6.5 miles to Mulholland Highway. Turn right and continue 4 miles to Stunt Road. Go just past the 1.94 mile marker at the entrance to the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve\, park and meet in the asphalt pullout on the right. \nPlease review the guidelines to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace(>2.5MPH).\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.
