SUMMARY:The Heart of Topanga State Park - Eagle Rock and Musch Loops
DESCRIPTION:In just under 7 miles\, this “super-duper-double-looper” will explore the heart of Topanga State Park (TSP) and touch all of TSP’s major trailheads. Starting at Trippet Ranch\, we will head up TSP’s Nature Trail which crosses Eagle Springs Fire Road near the junction of the East Topanga Fire Road (jumping off point to Parker Mesa). The Nature Trail skirts Santa Ynez canyon with peek-a-boo views of Santa Monica Bay before passing the Santa Ynez Canyon (“Waterfall”) trailhead on the way back to the Eagle Springs Fire Road. We will continue up the fire road past Eagle Junction to Hub Junction\, the highest point of the hike at 2000′. \nHub Junction marks the start of the second half of our TSP tour. We will head west and rollercoaster along the ridge\, past the Garapito trailhead\, to Eagle Rock. After a brief photo stop at Eagle Rock we continue down to Eagle Junction where we pick up the Musch Trail and our final leg of the double loop. Despite the lack of flowers at this time of the year\, Musch promises to be the highlight of this hike. We will transition in and out of chaparral\, oak woodland\, riparian woodland and grassland meadows. The last trailhead we will cross\, before making it back to the parking lot\, is the infamous Dead Horse Trail. So\, by my count\, our 7 mile\, 1200′ adventure will take us on or across 8 trails/trailheads. A super-duper-looper indeed! \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, exit at Topanga Canyon Boulevard (CA 27)\, drive south over the crest of the mountains and proceed three miles to Entrada Road (not Entrado!) and turn left. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park’s main parking lot (about one mile) \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway\, travel north on Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, pass the post office at the center of “town\,” then turn right on Entrada Road. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park’s main parking lot (about one mile). \nParking is $10.00/$9.00 for seniors (exact change\, although I think they take cc) in Park. There is some street parking (free) outside of the park on the road. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \nBy now you should know the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Please review them before you sign up for the hike. And just in case\, here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs on this hike\nBring ample hydration\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by an adult

SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Let’s try Ray Miller Trail after last week’s rain. The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Lynnmere Loop from Camino Magenta - a Gentler (not Beginner) Hike
DESCRIPTION:Instead of our usual starting point at the Conejo Playfields\, this shorter\, gentler hike will start at the top of Camino Magenta\, in the beautiful unincorporated Lynn Ranch neighborhood surrounded by Thousand Oaks. \nWe’ll do a clockwise loop around the gated Lynnmere community and wind up back at our starting point about 5 miles and about 1.200′ later. Along the way\, we’ll see the nifty 60’s Teledyne Scientific & Imaging building\, Amgen and the Biotech corridor in the distance to the west\, and Montclef / Wildwood below us as we loop around the north side. There are two street crossings\, both at gated entrances\, so we won’t have to worry too much about auto traffic. \nIn some climbs / descents\, the trail has some loose rock – please wear appropriate hiking shoes or boots. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road\, and travel northeast 1.2 miles to Camino Manzanas\, the fourth left-hand turn. Take Camino Manzanas 0.3 miles to Camino Magenta\, and turn right. Park in any legal spot between the intersection and the trailhead at the top of the hill. Please be nice; avoid turning around in residents’ driveways if at all possible. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. We are requiring proof of vaccination to join a hike. Restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian

SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ 8 mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station & Rattle Snake Road. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Upper Sycamore Canyon with Creek Crossings - A Gentler Hike
DESCRIPTION:There may be more than one hike posted for Thursday – please only sign up for one! And if you can’t make it\, please cancel as early as possible so waitlisted folks can get notice and attend. \nAs of New Year’s Day\, there were about a half-dozen creek crossings on this route\, all of which had rocks spanning the creek. However\, my feet stayed dry throughout the hike. Poison oak (ever present) is mostly off the side of the trail. The Toyon berries are still bright red on the trees\, and the Ceanothus is just starting to bud. The sycamore leaves are beautiful in the morning sun. \nThis hike will start at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, proceed down the asphalt to the bridge\, then up the Upper Sycamore Canyon trail (including a half dozen creek crossings to its junction with Danielson Fire Road. Optionally\, we’ll make our way towards the waterfall (one more creek crossing). Once back to the big oaks\, we’ll proceed up the dirt fire road\, crossing the meadow diagonally to Satwiwa\, up and over the hill and back to the cars. \nTotal distance is 5 miles or so with roughly 700 or so feet gain. \nBoots on at 8:45\, ready to hike for a 9:00 a.m. departure! \nPlease do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nWe’ll select between lunch at 3 Amigos or Country Harvest while on the hike 🙂 \nDirections: Google/Apple will misdirect you. Read and follow these\, if you haven’t been here before. \n\nFrom the east\, exit 101 at Lynn\, and drive southwest 5.5 miles to the turn-off just beyond the “National / State Parks” sign. Turn left\, under the gateway\, and drive to the end\, near the restrooms.\nFrom the west (Camarillo and beyond)\, exit 101 at Wendy\, drive south to Lynn Road. Turn right onto Lynn\, drive southwest (crossing Reino) to the turn-off just beyond the “National / State Parks” sign. Turn left\, under the gateway\, and drive to the end\, near the restrooms.\nFrom Port Hueneme\, Point Mugu\, and Oxnard\, drive up Potrero Road\, which turns into Lynn at the top of the canyon. Turn right into the Rancho Sierra Vista parking area once past the horse corrals.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Reseda to Eagle Rock via the Garapito Trail
DESCRIPTION:We will head up and down in this jaunt to Eagle Rock\, following the Garapito trail into the canyon and then up the hill to our destination. We will return via the fireroad. Or we’ll do the whole thing in reverse. It willl be a game time decision. I have not personally done this trail since last year’s rains that took a toll on the trail\, but I have heard that it is repaired and in good shape! Yay! \nDistance < 8 miles\nElevation gain: ~1400 ft \nEagle Rock\, located in Topanga SP\, is the primary attraction of this hike. It juts impressively out from the hillside\, with dramatic shear cliffs on three sides. There is easy access to the top of Eagle Rock from the trail. Usually accessed via Trippet Ranch\, this hike starts from the Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park at the south end of Reseda Blvd. This will be a combination of trails and fire roads. We start off with fire road and then take the Garapito Trail to Eagle Rock where we’ll take a short break before returning on fire roads to our cars on Reseda. The Garapito Trail is where we get our bonus ab workout due to the necessity to avoid so many low branches (right\, Mike?). As usual bring ample supplies of liquid refreshment\, snacks\, sunscreen and dress accordingly depending on the weather conditions. \nDirections: Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park is located on the southern end of Reseda Blvd. in Tarzana\, 3.2 miles south of the Ventura Fwy. The park and parking are at the end of Reseda Blvd. ***NOTE::: There is a yellow or white line across the road to mark where the fee parking starts and an “Iron Ranger” to pay the fee. Park before the line for free. Be aware as there is a “photo-enforced” stop sign in the area. \nPark Map (http://www.lamountains.com/maps/marvinBraude.pdf) \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. We’ll take a quick break and back up the Sycamore Canyon Road to our cars. \nDIRECTIONS: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy. At Lynn turn right\, then left at Reino\, which turns into Potrero Road. Take Potrero to Pinehill and turn right and park (Do not park on Potereo as you need a permit). Walk back along Potrero to its intersection with Big Sycamore Canyon Road that is more or less across from 4153 Potrero Road. We will start hike there. There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Oak Creek Canyon to Robles West In/Out ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Oak Creek Canyon Trail is a rather special trail in Los Robles Open Space that is designed for the blind as well as the sighted. The all-access trail is shaded by a canopy of oaks\, while the loop trail spends more time in the chaparral.\nWe will start at Oak Creek Canyon and proceed to a connector trail a short distance until we meet a junction with Los Robles Trail West (AKA “Space Mountain”). “Space Mountain” gets its name from the switchbacks. Then\, we will turn around right before a steep downhill section with sharp switchbacks (prior to where the trail crosses a private road) and head back to our cars. \nThis hike will be about 5-6 miles In/Out with approximately 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: From the 101 freeway\, drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go a half mile to the parking lot. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Talepop CCW Loop - A Gentler Hike 4.2 miles ±500 feet
DESCRIPTION:When I pre-hiked the route on Sunday morning\, I encountered a fairly squishy trail\, but with clear weather prior to Thursday\, it should be fine. As in the past\, I saw four or five deer\, lots of ravens\, some vultures\, and lots of deer and coyote prints. I did see a couple of prints that looked suspiciously ursine\, but no face-to-muzzle encounters 🙂 \nWe’ll start at Juan Bautista De Anza Park\, at the corner of Lost Hills and Las Virgenes. We’ll hike up the Talepop Trail\, along the ridgeline between Liberty and Malibu Canyons\, down to the North Meadowlands Trail\, then gently back up the Las Virgenes Fire Road\, back to the park. The total distance is 4.2 miles\, with an elevation gain and loss of about 500 feet. \nWhile relatively short\, this is a gorgeous hike\, with sightlines into Malibu Creek State Park\, into the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area\, and across to the area that is south of the new wildlife bridge. \nDIRECTIONS\nExit 101 at Lost Hills Road\, and drive south one mile. Just before getting to Las Virgenes Road\, turn right into the De Anza Park parking lot. There are restrooms adjacent to the parking lot. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.
