SUMMARY:Upper Stunt High Trail To Saddle Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Upper Stunt High Trail\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about 5 miles round-trip with 1100 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go just past the 1.94 mile marker at the entrance to the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve\, park and meet in the asphalt pullout on the right. \nFrom the PCH – turn up Malibu Canyon Road and drive 6.5 miles to Mulholland Highway. Turn right and continue 4 miles to Stunt Road. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to the Top of the World ~ 8 mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled singletrack- climbing\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nGive yourself extra time to get to the trailhead- the roads are winding and slow. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. SUMMARY:Gentler (~5 miles) : Upper Sycamore Canyon w/ Creek Crossings & Wildflowers
DESCRIPTION:For those of you who missed this hike last week\, here’s another chance. \nThere may be more than one hike posted for Thursday – please only sign up for one! And if you can’t make it\, please cancel as early as possible so waitlisted folks can get notice and attend. \nSee the photos for vignettes of the wildflowers along this route! \nAs of Sunday morning\, there were about a half-dozen creek crossings on this route\, all of which had rocks spanning the creek\, and neither my daughter nor I got our feet wet. As Katie mentioned\, poison oak is present along parts of the trail\, so wear pants and long sleeves\, or beware! \nThis hike will start at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, proceed down the asphalt to the bridge\, then up the Upper Sycamore Canyon trail (including a half dozen creek crossings to its junction with Danielson Fire Road. Optionally\, we’ll make our way towards the waterfall (one more creek crossing). Once back to the big oaks\, we’ll proceed up the dirt fire road enjoying amazing wildflowers\, crossing the meadow diagonally to Satwiwa\, and back to the cars. \nTotal distance is 5 miles or so with roughly 700 or so feet gain. \nBoots on at 8:45\, ready to hike for a 9:00 a.m. departure! \nPlease do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nWe’ll select between lunch at 3 Amigos or Country Harvest while on the hike 🙂 \nDirections: From the east\, exit 101 at Lynn\, and drive southwest 5.5 miles to the turn-off just beyond the “National / State Parks” sign. Turn left\, under the gateway\, and drive to the end\, near the restrooms. \nFrom the west (Camarillo and beyond)\, exit 101 at Wendy\, drive south to Lynn Road. Turn right onto Lynn\, drive southwest (crossing Reino) to the turn-off just beyond the “National / State Parks” sign. Turn left\, under the gateway\, and drive to the end\, near the restrooms. \nFrom Port Hueneme\, Point Mugu\, and Oxnard\, drive up Potrero Road\, which turns into Lynn at the top of the canyon. SUMMARY:Ray Miller trail up to the fire road
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday because the first one if full. We will go up the Ray Miller trail to the fire road and back\, about 6 miles. We may see poppies and other flowers. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although it has been foggy lately. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, bring sunscreen\, hopefully there will be some clouds. SUMMARY:Zuma Loop\, Ocean and Canyon View Trails ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked the trail this morning. The name “Zuma” is derived from the Chumash language and means “abundance.” There is an absolute abundance of beautiful and spectacular wildflowers engulfing the entire area and it appears that there was no impact from the Woolsey fire other than a few remnants of burnt trees. \nWe will start to hike the Zuma Loop trail and continue on to Ocean View trail. Then\, we descend down the Canyon View trail to the parking lot.\nThis hike is five miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximate 1000-1200 feet. \nDirections:\nFrom Santa Monica\, Thousand Oaks\, and the San Fernando Valley\, drive west on Pacific Coast Highway somewhat less than a mile past Kanan\, and turn right (north) on Bonsall Drive. DESCRIPTION:Let’s go see what’s in bloom in one of our favorite hiking spots\, Newton Canyon to Buzzard’s Roost! \nThis area was burned over in the Woolsey fire\, but spring brings wildflowers\, freely flowing water\, and a few waterfalls\, including the Upper Newton Canyon falls. We’ve seen lupines\, poppies\, lilies\, and a real rarity – Indian Chief\, related to Indian Paintbrush\, but much rarer here in So Cal. Hopefully the Phlox and Phaecelia are already starting to poke their heads out\, and Shooting Stars are starting to appear\, so let’s go see what else is blooming. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise over and up to the peak of the Zuma Ridge Trail at Buzzard’s Roost. On the ridge\, we’ll have a great view of Zuma Beach and the Pacific. On our way there\, we’ll cross a free-flowing creek\, pass under a scorched oak canopy\, and come out to a beautiful view of Upper Newton Falls spilling down a cliff to the valley floor. \nThis is an out and back hike at a total of 8 miles\, with 1600′ total elevation gain\, most of it leading to the turnaround point with the ocean view at Buzzards Roost. Even the beginning and end of the hike are mostly exposed after the fire. The middle portion is completely exposed; prepare accordingly. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). This is also the hike that I broke my thumb on 6 months ago\, almost to the day\, and still recovering. \nNancy has also posted a Thursday hike\, so please only sign up for one\, and withdraw from the other so people on the waitlist can join. \nThis hike will be 6 miles\, with 1\,350 feet of climb and descent. SUMMARY:Gentler / Beginner: Kanan Dume to Latigo - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This is an easier hike for Thursday\, another has also been posted\, please only sign up for one hike. This hike is 5 miles and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \n\n\nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.2 miles and up 600 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. This hike can include a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. There will probably still be some wildflowers along this route. \nThis hike has a short but steep climb at the beginning\, where we will help and encourage beginning hikers (who still should be prepared for a 150′ climb). \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. A deep “V” into a shaded cleft\, with another 450′ of descent and climb will complete the elevation loss and gain. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Lynnmere Trail to Wildwood Park
DESCRIPTION:We will start early to beat the heat\, entering the north branch of Lynnmere Trail via Thistle Trail\, which connects the north and south branches of Lynnmere Trail. The Lynnmere Trail is high above Thousand Oaks\, providing pleasant scenery along the Conejo Canyons\, Wildwood Park\, Paradise Falls\, Boney Mountain\, the Pacific Ocean\, and glimpses of Mt. Baldy and points east. This route has plenty of ups and downs\, but bypasses the area of loose gravel and rocks that cause it to be slippery. \nThrough the Lynnmere Trail’s south branch\, we’ll reach the Wildwood Canyon Trail\, then continue on the Indian Creek Trail\, Moonridge Trail\, and Indian Teepee Trail. Then\, we will retrace our way back to our cars. \nThis is about a 5–6 mile hike with a total elevation gain/loss of about 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road. We then loop around counter-clockwise by way of the White Horse canyon trail\, across the ridge\, and back down into the Triunfo trail. The Western Plateau is now accessible by way of Hill Canyon Fire Road or from the end of Rancho Conejo Blvd.\, and is expanding with the development of new trails to be enjoyed by hikers \, bikers and horse folks. This area is a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. \nFrom the end of Rancho Rd. we will drop down into the Arroyo Conejo/Hill Canyon area and start gaining elevation via the Western Plateau Trail to our first stop at Elliott Peak\, which affords views of the inland peaks of the Topa Topas to the Ventura coastline views of the Channel islands and Camarillo. We will then make our way via the Lichen Trail to the power station where we will take a quick break to enjoy the views\, then head back to our cars. DESCRIPTION:Let’s head out to Hidden Valley Overlook via Rancho Sierra Vista. This double-lollipop out and back hike wanders through wildflowers\, grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climbs up a foothill of Boney Mountain for some fantastic views east into Hidden Valley and Lake Sherwood\, north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. If it’s a clear day we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nThere will likely be other WTB hikes on Thursday; please sign up for only one\, and take your name off the Attending list as soon as you know you won’t make it. \nThe hike will stay in SMMNRA and barely touch Point Mugu State Park. We will take first water break at the Suicide Trail junction and turn left for our out-and-back excursion to Simi Peak. We will take a short break at the flagpole and begin our return to the junction. We will then proceed left and begin our descent on the return section of the loop (Suicide Trail). SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak OAB (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. SUMMARY:Stunt Road To Saddle Peak - (Gentle/Intermediate hike)
DESCRIPTION:This hike will take us about 6.7 miles round-trip with 1600 feet of elevation gain on winding trails to dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of Saddle Peak\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga and Cold Creek Canyons. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We eventually reach the Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridge line walk high above the Pacific. SUMMARY:Oakbrook Vista and Sandstone Hills Trail ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This out-and-back\, about 5 miles hike with an elevation gain/loss of +/-1000’ provides a great overview of the Thousand Oaks area\, the ocean and the western Santa Monica Mountains. The first portion is a narrow trail that zigzags its way up and if you reach the top\, you’ll be enjoying 360 degree views toward Boney Mountain on the west\, Lang Ranch and Woodridge trails on the north and more. \nDirections: \nFrom 101: Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.2 miles to Lang Ranch Parkway\, then turn right. SUMMARY:Wildwood to Santa Rosa Trail through Box Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Time to check out the Santa Rosa Trail north facing slope for Spring Flowers & view some cool properties including the choo choo train collector yard accessible through Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks.\nWildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for Davy Crocket\, The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus.\nThis hike takes us from the main parking lot up the Santa Rosa Trail to Mount Clef Ridge\, providing sweeping views of the park\, the Santa Rosa Valley\, & maybe the Channel Islands if it’s clear.\nDescending into the valley\, we’ll pass the famed train yard\, as well as other quirky estates.\nWe will take the Box Canyon Trail and the Mesa Trail back before heading back to the parking lot.\nOur route will be approximately 6 1/2 miles and 1000 +’ of elevation gain. Much of the hike is exposed- dress appropriately\, and make sure you have water or beverage of choice. Bring your cellphone. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nWatch for cross traffic coming from the right when you turn into the parking lot- they don’t have to stop. No card: No hike.\n\nWe will go to our overlook on Boney for a beautiful 360 degree viewpoint. We will have a good time hiking through the area and get a great workout. This hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 7 mile trek with an elevation gain of 1\,200+ ft\, through the Conejo historic Danielson Ranch area. We will be taking the standard route (no Fossil Trail). We may or may not get back back before dark\, so please pack a head lamp or flashlight. We will get some killer views of the 1000 Oaks and Newbury Park areas as well as Point Mugu and even the Channel Islands and Pacific Ocean on a clear day. Looking forward to seeing you there! \nDIRECTIONS: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy all the way until it dead ends at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There is ample free parking on the dirt along Potrero Road. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 1000 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hike\, and we will finish in 2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I will mark the trail if necessary\, but I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. SUMMARY:BIKE VENTURA HARBOR TO HOBSON FOLLOWED BY CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:THE WEEKDAY TRAILBLAZERS BIKE LADY IS BACK!\nRIDE COAST FROM VENTURA HARBOR TO HOBSON\nTHEN PICNIC AND ROCK ‘N ROLL TO THE VANISE TERRY BAND \nBike ride meets and rolls from the Village at the Ventura Harbor at 9:00 AM for about 28 miles of mostly flat cycling along the coast with a mix of bike lanes and bike paths as our trails. \nRoute will take us around the Harbor\, past the Ventura Pier\, up the Omer Rains Bike Path then continue on PCH to Hobson Beach Park. We’ll have our snack/rest break at Hobson then return to the Harbor. \nBIKE ROUTE MAP : https://goo.gl/maps/CGnKu7R6ffBkYD2w8\nLink for planning purposes. Our route may be a bit different from Google’s and we may use more residential streets. Google underestimates elevation gain\, expect about 350 feet. Time estimate assumes faster speed and no break. Intermediate level pace and distance. Too fast and too far for beginners. \nTHE CONCERT\nMy friend Vanise Terry and her band will be rocking the Harbor from Noon to 3:00 PM. She has a great voice and personality. I think you will enjoy her. Vanise and her band perform at many local brew pubs\, clubs and tasting rooms. I anticipate the band will play some classic rock with perhaps some country and contemporary songs. Check out Vanise at http://vanisemusic.com/ Bring your own chair\, hat and a picnic lunch. You can also buy food at the Harbor. \nFYI\, there is also a Mental Wellness Fest at the harbor from 10-5. That event will be in the lawn area. If you want even more music\, there’s a blue grass band in that section at 3. You are welcome to check out the festival too. It will be a busy day at the harbor. \nDO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE IN YOUR CAR. \nWHAT TO BRING: \nFOR YOUR BIKE: Bike in good working order–chain lubed\, gears shift easily\, seat at right height\, tires pumped up and brakes checked\, extra air in MTB tires. Please have your bike ready BEFORE time to leave at 9:00 AM. Road bikes and hybrids best. E-bikes OK\, but ALL riders are expected to stay with the group\, NO using throttle to go out ahead or lagging behind then racing to catch up or pass. Flats happen. You MUST bring a spare tube\, patch kit\, tire levers. If you don’t have a frame pump or CO2 system\, get one before the ride. If your bike requires special tools\, you must bring them and know how to use them. Host will not be your bike mechanic. If you are staying for the concert\, please make sure you can lock your bike to your rack or put it in your vehicle. \nFOR YOU: Helmets are MANDATORY. Be sure to bring water/hydration and snacks. Bike gloves and padded shorts or leggings\, bright tops or jacket. Any personal items you may need\, ID and emergency contact info. Cell phone. SUMMARY:Challenger Park Trail ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Challenger park offers miles of trails connecting to Long Canyon\, Oak Canyon\, Trough Canyon\, Lone Oak Canyon\, and other adjoining open-space nature areas in the southern section of the Simi Valley. The scenery lining the trails includes extensive oak woodlands\, chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The terrain varies greatly with rolling green hills and steep mountainous hills and canyons. \nI hiked this trail Saturday morning to check out the trail and there are still a few wildflowers left and the colorful bushes are lovely. \nhttps://www.alltrails.com/explore/recording/challenger-park-6-3-23-5463b51 \nIt is 5.2 miles with about a 900 ft elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom Highway 23\, take the Olsen Road exit and go northeast for 1.9 miles to Wood Ranch Parkway. (Olsen becomes Madera Road). Turn right on Wood Ranch Parkway and go 1.9 miles to the junction with Long Canyon Road. Turn left onto Long Canyon Road and go 1.7 miles. Challenger Park will be on the right. \nFrom Simi Valley: From Highway118\, take the First St. exit and go south (turn right if you’re coming from the west\, left if from the east) for 2.8 miles. Turn left into the parking lot signed for Challenger Park (just past the intersection with Stonebrook. \nAs you enter the park road\, a horse arena is on the left. \nBE CAREFUL OF HIGH SPEED BUMPS! Starting at Trippet Ranch\, we’ll ramble through a shady oak grove favored by mule deer and into stretches of grassland. \nBeyond the ranch\, the trail begins to rise along the ridgeline between Topanga and Santa Ynez Canyons. Giant slabs of sandstone mark the route to their former home beneath the Pacific Ocean.\nWhen the rising is done\, we’ll rest on Parker Mesa Overlook\, with the entire LA Basin stretched below us\, the majestic San Gabriel Mountains to our north\, Catalina Island to the south\, and the sweeping crescent of the Santa Monica coastline to the east. \nThis is about a 6.7 mile out and back hike\, with 1200’ feet of elevation gain. We will add an extension midway up of roughly 0.7 mile to make it (sort of) an even 8 miles. Traffic on Topanga Canyon Blvd can make the drive longer than you expect\, so give yourself enough time. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, exit at Topanga Canyon Boulevard (CA 27)\, drive south over the crest of the mountains and proceed three miles to Entrada Road (not Entrado!) and turn left. We start at the trailhead at the back parking lot of Triunfo Park and go up to the Los Robles Trail. We then loop around counter-clockwise by way of the White Horse Canyon Trail\, across the ridge\, and back down into the Triunfo Trail. SUMMARY:Lynnmere Loop from Camino Magenta - a Gentler (not Beginner) Hike
DESCRIPTION:Instead of our usual starting point at the Conejo Playfields\, this shorter\, gentler hike will start at the top of Camino Magenta\, in the beautiful unincorporated Lynn Ranch neighborhood surrounded by Thousand Oaks. \nWe’ll do a loop around the gated Lynnmere community and wind up back at our starting point about 5 miles and about 850′ later. Along the way\, we’ll see the nifty 60’s Teledyne Scientific & Imaging building\, Amgen and the Biotech corridor in the distance to the west\, and Montclef / Wildwood below us as we loop around the north side. There are two street crossings\, both at gated entrances\, so we won’t have to worry too much about auto traffic. \nIn some climbs / descents\, the trail has some loose rock – please wear appropriate hiking shoes or boots. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road\, and travel northeast 1.2 miles to Camino Manzanas\, the fourth left-hand turn. Take Camino Manzanas 0.3 miles to Camino Magenta\, and turn right. Park in any legal spot between the intersection and the trailhead at the top of the hill. SUMMARY:Fossil and Old Boney Trails - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us on this sweet (maybe not so sweet!) hike that wanders through grasslands and chaparral\, down into a canyon\, then up to eye-stretching views. We will follow Sycamore Canyon fire road until it intersects with the Fossil Trail. We will then take the Fossil Trail to the Old Boney Trail. The Fossil Trail features a hunk of fist-sized marine fossils smack dab in the middle of our path- we’ll actually walk on prehistory. \nIf it’s a clear day\, we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island\, as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. When we reach the Old Boney Trail\, we will make a left and continue on Old Boney until it intersects with the Danielson Fire Road. We will then take the Danielson Fire Road back to the cars. \nThis hike will be approximately 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1700 feet. Bring poles if you favor them. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road. Take Lynn Road southwest 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. SUMMARY:Palo Comado to the Edge of China Flat - Gentler Friendly but not Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Palo Comado (“Burnt Stick” in Spanish) tells you a lot about the environs – frequently burned over by wildfires\, this was directly in the line of the Woolsey Fire but much of the vegetation has re-grown. \nThis is one of many routes from the Conejo Valley to China Flat. Except for one turn near the trailhead\, this gentle 900′ climb\, punctuated by a 100′ climb and descent just at the start\, is uninterrupted until we get up to the top\, where we’ll rest at the bench\, turn around\, and head back. \nThis is about 6 mile hike with about 1\,000′ of elevation gain. \nUPDATE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes.
