SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked the trail this morning and it is absolutely stunning with wildflowers beside the awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. The trail follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1100’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). SUMMARY:INTERMEDIATE hike: Creek Crossings/Waterfall/Wildflowers on Upper Sycamore
DESCRIPTION:One of three hikes posted this Tuesday – please only sign up for one! And if you can’t make it\, please cancel as early as possible so waitlisted folks can get notice and attend. \nNote we will be crossing water (hopefully) up to a dozen times. I strongly recommend waterproof boots and trekking poles. Additionally\, poison oak is abundant in parts of the trail\, so wear pants and long sleeves\, or beware! \nSteve’s write-up from 4 years ago still works! (although I can’t attest to the amphibians facts…..) After the rains over the past couple of months\, there’s plenty of water flowing down the mountainside. Let’s go enjoy the sights and sounds of the water\, and the newly hatched frogs and other amphibians https://www.nps.gov/samo/learn/nature/amphibians.htm. \nThis hike will start at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, proceed down the asphalt to the bridge\, then up the Upper Sycamore Canyon trail (including a dozen shallow creek crossings – maybe fewer as it’s drying fast) to its junction with Danielson Fire Road. We’ll continue up to the waterfall (one more creek crossing)\, then continue up to the “Peace\, Love\, Joy” memorial at the top of the stream (another creek crossing) that feeds it. Once back down to the big oaks\, we’ll proceed up the dirt fire road enjoying amazing wildflowers\, crossing the meadow diagonally to Satwiwa\, and back to the cars. \nTotal distance is 7 miles or so with roughly 1300 or so feet gain. \nBoots on at 8:45\, ready to hike for a 9:00 a.m. departure!\nPlease do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nLunch at 3 Amigos. \nDirections: From the east\, exit 101 at Lynn\, and drive southwest 5.5 miles to the turn-off just beyond the “National / State Parks” sign. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. We will hike a little slower than the other hikes. If you want to go faster\, join one of the other hikes. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some fog. Bring sunscreen. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground and start off along the main Sycamore Canyon and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table. If you want to turn left at the picnic table and go up to where the Ray Miller trail meets the fire road you can do that and then turn around. We will follow the fire road down to the parking lot. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is a few miles south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit\, the 2022 Parking Permit is still good through 2023). SUMMARY:Kanan Dume to Castro Peak OAB (Fast Paced)

Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\n*Proof of vaccination required \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\n\nOur Out and Back hike will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 60-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 4 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific\, but the route eventually gives way to open hillsides and ridgelines\, and an open area over the Pacific. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 7 miles with 1550 feet of elevation gain. \nNo dogs allowed on the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Hunt for California Poppies and Trail Exploration ~ Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:A few years ago\, Weekday Trailblazer members helped build a trail that extends north from the Westlake Village YMCA up into the hills west of Lindero Canyon Road. We will hike both the Bowfield Trail and Wishbone Trail on this outing. \nThis route is about 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 1050’. \nI pre-hiked the route on Saturday and the poppies were abundant. There are a couple of short sections of the trail that are a bit overgrown so you might think about wearing long pants if you are sensitive to overgrowth. \nDIRECTIONS: Find the trailhead by exiting 101 at Lindero Canyon\, and go north to Thousand Oaks Boulevard. Turn left\, and immediately turn slightly right\, and uphill\, to the new park high above the Boulevard. At the top\, turn left\, and drive to the far left (west) end of the ball fields. \nThere are restrooms and water fountains near the trailhead and the ball fields. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista ~ Gentler hike
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday since the only hike posted is full. We will start near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountain and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. We will hike to the top of Rosewood trail where there is a picnic table. Since this is an out and back\, you can take your time or speed it up. Mugu State Park (Sycamore Canyon) have a lot of ruts to fill and brush to cut back. \nHow does free camping at the Danielson Ranch in Point Mugu State Park\, a barbecue dinner\, coffee & bagels in the mornings and the chance to win one of a few dozen thank-you drawing prizes – in exchange for some much needed work on our trails sound? \nYou can come and help for the weekend or for a day! For the 40th year\, trail users are gathering in April to work on the trails we love. In partnership with State Parks and the National Park Service\, we have trail crew leaders from the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council\, the Sierra Club Task Force and Concerned Off-Road Bicyclist Association to teach you the basics of trail work and then guide you as we work on several different trails in the park. Choices for the level of work you want to do range from easy to very difficult. We welcome all ages and this is a great opportunity for families and outdoor groups. When the weekend is over\, your trails are in better shape and we all benefit. \nWork days are Saturday and Sunday morning with optional camping on Friday and Saturday nights. DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park. Currently\, it’s spectacular with an abundance of mustard greens\, wildflowers and California poppies in addition to bountiful water in the waterfalls and creeks. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks with 27 miles of trails skittering through this area\, which includes Wildwood’s archetypal western look that served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe hike various trails with a long creek\, crossing streams and bridges\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs and waterfalls passing through desert\, meadow\, and woodland environments at various points along the way. \nWe’ll hike over 5-6 miles with approximately 1000’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista to Ranch Overlook - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:We haven’t done this hike in about 2 years and there are still a lot of wildflowers blooming in this big loop around Rancho Sierra Vista\, so hopefully we will enjoy some of them\, along with some pretty views of Boney Mountain. \nWe will meet at the trailhead parking area at the intersection of Wendy and Portrero Road. Please note this is different than the Parking Lot where we often meet. See directions below. \nThis will be a big loop throughout the upper mesa. We will take a brief break about 2/3 of the way through the hike at the only place where there is any shade and a few tables. It will be a little warmer than it has been on Thursday\, so bring plenty of water\, wide hat\, sturdy shoes or boots and hiking poles if you favor them. \nTotal distance is roughly 6 miles\, with about 1000′ of elevation gain. \nNote that this is a gentler hike but not a beginner hike. It is a convoluted trail so I will mark it\, but we will try to keep the group together. \nDirections: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy all the way until it dead ends at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There is ample free parking on the dirt along the road. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy ~ Gentler Hike for Thursday
DESCRIPTION:This is a gentler hike for Thursday\, we will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not foggy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. This is a gentler hike and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up and turn around just before going up to the monument.\nThe hike will start in SMNMRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park. It’s mostly single track and fire road. On this trail\, dogs are not invited. Please bring ample hydration.\nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1200 feet of elevation gain. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. SUMMARY:Upper Stunt High Trail To Saddle Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Upper Stunt High Trail\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about 5 miles round-trip with 1100 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to the Top of the World ~ 8 mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled singletrack- climbing\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nGive yourself extra time to get to the trailhead- the roads are winding and slow. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. SUMMARY:Gentler (~5 miles) : Upper Sycamore Canyon w/ Creek Crossings & Wildflowers
DESCRIPTION:For those of you who missed this hike last week\, here’s another chance. \nThere may be more than one hike posted for Thursday – please only sign up for one! And if you can’t make it\, please cancel as early as possible so waitlisted folks can get notice and attend. \nSee the photos for vignettes of the wildflowers along this route! \nAs of Sunday morning\, there were about a half-dozen creek crossings on this route\, all of which had rocks spanning the creek\, and neither my daughter nor I got our feet wet. As Katie mentioned\, poison oak is present along parts of the trail\, so wear pants and long sleeves\, or beware! \nThis hike will start at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, proceed down the asphalt to the bridge\, then up the Upper Sycamore Canyon trail (including a half dozen creek crossings to its junction with Danielson Fire Road. Optionally\, we’ll make our way towards the waterfall (one more creek crossing). Once back to the big oaks\, we’ll proceed up the dirt fire road enjoying amazing wildflowers\, crossing the meadow diagonally to Satwiwa\, and back to the cars. \nTotal distance is 5 miles or so with roughly 700 or so feet gain. \nBoots on at 8:45\, ready to hike for a 9:00 a.m. departure! \nPlease do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nWe’ll select between lunch at 3 Amigos or Country Harvest while on the hike 🙂 \nDirections: From the east\, exit 101 at Lynn\, and drive southwest 5.5 miles to the turn-off just beyond the “National / State Parks” sign. DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked the trail this morning. The name “Zuma” is derived from the Chumash language and means “abundance.” There is an absolute abundance of beautiful and spectacular wildflowers engulfing the entire area and it appears that there was no impact from the Woolsey fire other than a few remnants of burnt trees. \nWe will start to hike the Zuma Loop trail and continue on to Ocean View trail. Then\, we descend down the Canyon View trail to the parking lot.\nThis hike is five miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximate 1000-1200 feet. \nDirections:\nFrom Santa Monica\, Thousand Oaks\, and the San Fernando Valley\, drive west on Pacific Coast Highway somewhat less than a mile past Kanan\, and turn right (north) on Bonsall Drive. Continue north into the dirt lot at the end. \nFrom Oxnard and points north and west\, turn left on Bonsall to the end. SUMMARY:8 Mile Intermediate Hike ~ Newton Canyon to Buzzards Roost - Wildflowers?
DESCRIPTION:Let’s go see what’s in bloom in one of our favorite hiking spots\, Newton Canyon to Buzzard’s Roost! \nThis area was burned over in the Woolsey fire\, but spring brings wildflowers\, freely flowing water\, and a few waterfalls\, including the Upper Newton Canyon falls. We’ve seen lupines\, poppies\, lilies\, and a real rarity – Indian Chief\, related to Indian Paintbrush\, but much rarer here in So Cal. Hopefully the Phlox and Phaecelia are already starting to poke their heads out\, and Shooting Stars are starting to appear\, so let’s go see what else is blooming. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise over and up to the peak of the Zuma Ridge Trail at Buzzard’s Roost. On the ridge\, we’ll have a great view of Zuma Beach and the Pacific. On our way there\, we’ll cross a free-flowing creek\, pass under a scorched oak canopy\, and come out to a beautiful view of Upper Newton Falls spilling down a cliff to the valley floor. \nThis is an out and back hike at a total of 8 miles\, with 1600′ total elevation gain\, most of it leading to the turnaround point with the ocean view at Buzzards Roost. Even the beginning and end of the hike are mostly exposed after the fire. The middle portion is completely exposed; prepare accordingly. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). According to Scott\, the wildflowers are great in Las Llajas Canyon right now. This is also the hike that I broke my thumb on 6 months ago\, almost to the day\, and still recovering. \nNancy has also posted a Thursday hike\, so please only sign up for one\, and withdraw from the other so people on the waitlist can join. \nThis hike will be 6 miles\, with 1\,350 feet of climb and descent. SUMMARY:Gentler / Beginner: Kanan Dume to Latigo - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This is an easier hike for Thursday\, another has also been posted\, please only sign up for one hike. This hike is 5 miles and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \n\n\nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.2 miles and up 600 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. This hike can include a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. There will probably still be some wildflowers along this route. \nThis hike has a short but steep climb at the beginning\, where we will help and encourage beginning hikers (who still should be prepared for a 150′ climb). \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. A deep “V” into a shaded cleft\, with another 450′ of descent and climb will complete the elevation loss and gain. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Lynnmere Trail to Wildwood Park
DESCRIPTION:We will start early to beat the heat\, entering the north branch of Lynnmere Trail via Thistle Trail\, which connects the north and south branches of Lynnmere Trail. The Lynnmere Trail is high above Thousand Oaks\, providing pleasant scenery along the Conejo Canyons\, Wildwood Park\, Paradise Falls\, Boney Mountain\, the Pacific Ocean\, and glimpses of Mt. Baldy and points east. This route has plenty of ups and downs\, but bypasses the area of loose gravel and rocks that cause it to be slippery. \nThrough the Lynnmere Trail’s south branch\, we’ll reach the Wildwood Canyon Trail\, then continue on the Indian Creek Trail\, Moonridge Trail\, and Indian Teepee Trail. Then\, we will retrace our way back to our cars. \nThis is about a 5–6 mile hike with a total elevation gain/loss of about 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road. DESCRIPTION:Time to re-explore the Los Robles trail system. This will be about a 7 mile lollipop hike with approximately 1400 feet of elevation gain. We start at the trailhead at the back parking lot of Triunfo Park and go up to the Los Robles trail. We then loop around counter-clockwise by way of the White Horse canyon trail\, across the ridge\, and back down into the Triunfo trail. We will enjoy views of Ladyface Mountain\, Lake Sherwood\, Las Virgenes Reservoir as well as neighboring cities. \nIf another hike is posted for this date\, please sign up for only one. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. We are requiring proof of vaccination to join a hike. (A photo on your phone is fine.) No card: No hike.\n\nWelcome Trailblazers! Time to return to a favorite trail once again! Let’s bag a couple peaks in our beautiful Western Plateau. We will do Elliott first\, then hike to our second peak where the power station is for our break. \nThis hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 6 mile +/- loop with 1600+/- ft of elevation gain. The Western Plateau is now accessible by way of Hill Canyon Fire Road or from the end of Rancho Conejo Blvd.\, and is expanding with the development of new trails to be enjoyed by hikers \, bikers and horse folks. This area is a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. \nFrom the end of Rancho Rd. we will drop down into the Arroyo Conejo/Hill Canyon area and start gaining elevation via the Western Plateau Trail to our first stop at Elliott Peak\, which affords views of the inland peaks of the Topa Topas to the Ventura coastline views of the Channel islands and Camarillo. We will then make our way via the Lichen Trail to the power station where we will take a quick break to enjoy the views\, then head back to our cars. If we have enough time\, light\, and interest\, we can hit Mount Rex from the backside. SUMMARY:RSV to Hidden Valley Overlook - Gentler (but not Beginner) Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s head out to Hidden Valley Overlook via Rancho Sierra Vista. This double-lollipop out and back hike wanders through wildflowers\, grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climbs up a foothill of Boney Mountain for some fantastic views east into Hidden Valley and Lake Sherwood\, north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. If it’s a clear day we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nThere will likely be other WTB hikes on Thursday; please sign up for only one\, and take your name off the Attending list as soon as you know you won’t make it. \nThe hike will stay in SMMNRA and barely touch Point Mugu State Park. It’s mostly single track with short stretches of fire road. \nThis out and back hike is just over 5 miles\, but with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Stats: ~6 miles with ~1500 ft. of gain.\nSuggestted equipment: Trekking Poles and Boots. Water – 1 to 2 liters.\nConditions: exposed\, rocky\, steep\, technical descents\, overgrowth\, Rattlesnakes.\nDescription: upside-down lollipop beginning with a steep ascent of 900 feet in 1.2 miles up the China Flat trail. We will take first water break at the Suicide Trail junction and turn left for our out-and-back excursion to Simi Peak. We will take a short break at the flagpole and begin our return to the junction. We will then proceed left and begin our descent on the return section of the loop (Suicide Trail). This hike is moderately strenuous\, and (due to terrain) not conducive to a fast average pace. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak OAB (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at Gold Canyon Trail to Wildwood Canyon Trail and passes through various trails with a long creek\, crossing streams and bridges\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, water falls\, cacti-filled desert environs\, riparian forest\, and wildflowers. SUMMARY:Stunt Road To Saddle Peak - (Gentle/Intermediate hike)
DESCRIPTION:This hike will take us about 6.7 miles round-trip with 1600 feet of elevation gain on winding trails to dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of Saddle Peak\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga and Cold Creek Canyons. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. The route passes through riparian forest\, open fields\, and interesting sandstone formations. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/3/a/c/event_261290092.jpeg \nOur hike begins on the Stunt High Trail\, a winding single-file track that provides a varying but moderate uphill ascent in a southwesterly direction for about 2.5 miles. Early in the hike\, there are beautiful wooded areas and a small stream\, and then increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridge line walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains as we proceed. There will be some very light rock-hopping. Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go one mile\, and park and meet in the dirt pullout on the right. \nFrom the PCH – turn up Malibu Canyon Road and drive 6.5 miles to Mulholland Highway. Turn right and continue 4 miles to Stunt Road. Turn right and drive one mile.
