SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) - Reagan Ranch to MASH
DESCRIPTION:This hike is a shorter/gentler Tuesday hike (5 1/2 mile\, 500′ gain) due to the hot weather forecast. We will enter MCSP on the Yearling Trail which crosses the grasslands of the former Reagan Ranch and meets up with the scenic Lookout Trail. The Lookout Trail climbs through a chaparral “forest” to panoramic views of Century Lake and MCSP’s central valley. The Lookout Trail drops down to Crags Road at the site of the Planet of the Apes village. We’ll take a brief detour to Century Dam and the very scenic and shady woodland at the east end of Century Lake. \nFrom Century Lake we will follow Crags Road west and cross Malibu Creek on our way to the MASH site. The mile or so from the bridge crossing to MASH is some of the nicest riparian habitat in the park. The trail crews have done a great job of restoring the trail which was badly damaged in last season’s storms. \nWe will complete our western tour of MCSP by returning to the Yearling Trail via the Cage Trail. \nKathy and I scouted this hike on Saturday and completed it in exactly 2 hours (without stopping). We’ll plan to be back at the cars by 11:00. SUMMARY:Through Conejo Canyon bridge to Wildwood Central Park - Intermediate Gentler
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for the overflow on Tuesday. We will be a little shorter and possibly a little slower. If you change hikes\, don’t forget to take yourself off the waitlist or the regular list on the Malibu Creek hike. \nLet’s go to Wildwood Park through Hill Canyon. The parking lot at the trailhead is closed\, but there is another paved lot just before the trailhead on your right. After crossing the bridge from the parking lot\, we will start the hike following Hill Canyon trail to the newly opened “Conejo Canyon Bridge” which connects trails on either side of the creek\, Conejo Canyons and Wildwood Park. Jaesoon recently did this hike\, and it was a nice change. Our elevation gain will be the trail up to Lizard Rock. From there we will turn around and come back. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe will pass through various trails with bridges and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 800’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.5 miles to the parking lot on your right. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Los Robles trailhead\, walking down to Las Padres and up and around
DESCRIPTION:NOTE:\nThere is quite a bit of shade on this hike. This will be a gentler hike for Thursday. We will go slower and with less elevation gain and less miles. Some hikers may want to add a mile by going to the Greenmeadow parking lot at the end of the hike and taking the trail back to Moorpark\, but you can also return to the Moorpark parking lot before that turn off. Another hike will be posted\, please only sign up for one hike. \nWe will start in the parking lot at the end of Moorpark and walk down the street to the Las Padres trail. From there we will loop around and come back to the Moorpark trailhead via the Los Robles trail. This should be around 4.5 miles with maybe 800 feet elevation gain. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful hike. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. SUMMARY:Wildwood to Santa Rosa Trail to Box Canyon Loop-Gentler Friendly/Not Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Let’s hike a loop through Wildwood we haven’t done in a long time. \nWildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for Davy Crocket\, The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nThis hike takes us from the main parking lot up the Santa Rosa Trail to Mount Clef Ridge\, providing sweeping views of the park\, the Santa Rosa Valley\, & maybe the Channel Islands if it’s clear. \nDescending into the valley\, we’ll pass the famed train yard\, as well as other quirky estates. \nWe will take the Box Canyon Trail and the Mesa Trail back before heading back to the parking lot. \nOur route will be approximately 6 miles and 1000 +’ of elevation gain. Much of the hike is exposed and the Box Canyon climb toward the end is work – so dress appropriately\, and make sure you have plenty of water or beverage of choice. Bring your poles if you like them. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nWatch for cross traffic coming from the right when you turn into the parking lot- they don’t have to stop. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ You Choose ~ 6 or 8 mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Due to the ongoing heat and humidity this is a choose your own hike. You have the option of 6 or 8 miles. It’s a straight forward out and back hike so you decide when to turn back. \nEncinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 6-8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1000’- 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:While the heat is once again with us\, we will take this at a gentler pace and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views west to Port Hueneme\, Oxnard and the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not hazy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. SUMMARY:China Flat & Simi Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins from the top of King James Court\, a cul-de-sac off Lindero Canyon Road. Begin up the trail at the top of the road\, passing through a gate by a sign that reads “China Flat Trail Head.” It will pass through the branch of Suicide Trail and another branch of China Flat Trail. Stay to the left as Simi Peak Trail heads west\, gradually ascending through more oak savanna on China Flat. As you ascend\, look over your shoulder and you should be able to spot the San Gabriel Mountains to the east of the Simi Hills. On clear winter days\, the snowy top of Mount Baldy will be hard to miss. The summit of Simi Peak has views in every direction. The Santa Monica Mountains stand tall on the far side of the valley\, stretching to the east and west about as far as can be seen.\nThis hike is about 5 1/2 miles out and back with approximately 1200’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: Take the 101 Freeway to exit 39 in Westlake Village and head north on Lindero Canyon Road. Drive 3.7 miles and turn left up King James Court (which is 0.9 miles past Kanan Road). DESCRIPTION:NOTE THE 9:00 start time!! \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail headed west\, crossing over Zuma Ridge Motorway toward Trancas Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross a stream (haha)\, pass under an oak canopy (a little\, anyway)\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and you’ll see Upper Newton Falls spilling (ah\, those were the days) through them like a ribbon. \nThis is an out and back hike for a total of 8 miles\, with 1475′ total elevation gain. A little shade\, a lot of sun\, all single track – prepare accordingly. The wounded and friends can turn around earlier…. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We should get back before dark\, but just in case\, please bring a headlamp or flashlight. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take the trail down by the teepee to Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, pick up Lizard Rock Trail\, and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We’ll take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, and either catch Mesa Trail or Moonridge Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for approximately 5 miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. We will take a break somewhere in our travels. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). DESCRIPTION:This double-loop circumnavigation of the Lang Ranch Open Space will start at the the Albertson Fire Road (aka Motorway) trailhead (our traditional launch point for China Flats). From there we will meet up with the Long Ridge trail which connects with the Meadow View trail and climbs up and over the ridge to the Sunrise/Autumn Ridge loop. On the Autumn Ridge return we will pick up the Alapay trail which takes us back to the Albertson Motorway to complete the double loop. \nTotal mileage for our Lang Ranch adventure is about 6 miles with 1\,000 foot elevation gain/loss. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet at the Community Center under the solar panels in the parking lot. \nThis hike will be in addition to David’s hike\, but we will be a little slower with less elevation gain. \nLet’s try this hike in the counter-Clockwise direction\, just for a change. This hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 900 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a much slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). SUMMARY:Intermediate Hike ~ Palo Comado / Cheseboro Loop via Ranch Center trail
DESCRIPTION:We haven’t done this hike for almost a year! \nWe’ll do a loop around the northeastern regions of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and the Las Virgenes Open Space. This area traverses many ecosystems\, including riparian\, chaparral\, and the rockscape from Galaxy Quest. The area is generally dry\, but very nice! \nThe trailhead is where Sunnycrest turns into Doubletree\, about a mile east of Kanan Road (34°10’56.67″N\, 118°45’6.44″W) \nWe’ll be hiking about 7 miles with 1100’ gain over the course of 2 1/2 hours and will traverse parts of Ranch Center\, Cheseboro\, Sheep Corral and Palo Comado canyons. We’ll see Sulphur Springs\, the Baleen Wall and Shepherd’s Flat. The hike includes fire roads\, single-tracks\, and an exhilarating wakeup call near the beginning\, where we travel up and down 400′ over the course of the 1.1 mile Ranch Center section of the trail. \nBring sunscreen\, plenty of water\, and wear sturdy shoes and a sun hat. DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. Currently\, it’s very beautiful with an abundance of wildflowers and California poppies in addition to powerful waterfalls. \nIt will start at Moonridge Trail and pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Time to return to a favorite trail once again! Let’s bag a couple peaks in our beautiful Western Plateau. We will do Elliott first\, then hike to our second peak where the power station is for our break. \nThis hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 6 mile +/- loop with 1600+/- ft of elevation gain. The Western Plateau is now accessible by way of Hill Canyon Fire Road or from the end of Rancho Conejo Blvd.\, and is expanding with the development of new trails to be enjoyed by hikers \, bikers and horse folks. This area is a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. \nFrom the end of Rancho Rd. we will drop down into the Arroyo Conejo/Hill Canyon area and start gaining elevation via the Western Plateau Trail to our first stop at Elliott Peak\, which affords views of the inland peaks of the Topa Topas to the Ventura coastline views of the Channel islands and Camarillo. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start our hike near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. Rosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. DESCRIPTION:Restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\n\nWhat we’ll do: \nHike Oakbrook Vista trail to the crest of the ridge. Go left on the Sandstone Hills until it intersects power line roads. This will be a 5+ miles round trip\, and 1300 ft elevation). Trails are wide and easy. There will be no sweep. This is an in- and-out-hike on same trail. \nDirections:\nFrom the East\, West & South – take the 101 toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.1 miles and turn right on the Lang Ranch Parkway. Continue 0.3 mile along Lang Ranch Parkway. You’ll need to turn around and park across the street from the entrance to the Oakbrook Vista Trailhead (do not park on the same side of the road as the trailhead). \nFrom the North – take the 23 south toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at the Avenida De Los Arboles exit and turn left (east) on Avenida De Los Arboles. Drive 1.5 miles and turn right on Westlake Boulevard. Drive 0.2 miles and turn left on the Lang Ranch Parkway. Park by the trailhead or across the street from the entrance to the Oakbrook Vista Trailhead. \n3222 Lang Ranch Pkwy\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91362 \nParking:\nFree on-street parking is available along both sides of Lang Ranch Parkway. SUMMARY:Western Plateau Hawk Canyon - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Conejo Canyons trailhead next to the Thousand Oaks Recycling Center on Conejo Center Drive\, near the end of Rancho Conejo. We’ll walk down the fire road to Hawk Canyon and then we will take Hawk Canyon to Five Points. From Five Points\, we will take the Western Plateau trail up to intersection with the Plateau Rim trail. We will take the Plateau Rim trail \, the Peninsula Loop trail and the Western Plateau trail back to the car. \nThe total distance of this lollipop hike is about 5 miles with approximately 800′ gain. Some of the sections are rocky; trekking poles may be advisable. \nOn this hike\, you’ll see the Conejo Airfield (honest!)\, Mt. Rex’s backside\, at least two wrecked cars\, lots of fennel\, and maybe a rattlesnake and a tarantula or two. Plus\, impressive views of the Santa Susannah Mountains (if it’s clear)\, two or three rocky canyons\, and the new biotech developments nearby. \nUPDATE: Please review the revised guidelines to participate in our hikes.
