SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. We will start at Moonridge Trail and pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5-6 miles with about a 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:Parker Mesa Overlook with extension - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:School traffic and traffic on Topanga Canyon Blvd can make the drive longer than you expect\, so please allow enough travel time! \nTopanga State Park is 36 square miles of natural wonder ensconced within Los Angeles’ city limits. Starting at Trippet Ranch\, we’ll ramble through a shady oak grove favored by mule deer and into stretches of grassland. \nBeyond the ranch\, the trail begins to rise along the ridgeline between Topanga and Santa Ynez Canyons. Giant slabs of sandstone mark the route to their former home beneath the Pacific Ocean.\nWhen the rising is done\, we’ll rest on Parker Mesa Overlook\, with the entire LA Basin stretched below us\, the majestic San Gabriel Mountains to our north\, Catalina Island to the south\, and the sweeping crescent of the Santa Monica coastline to the east. \nThis is about a 6.7 mile out and back hike\, with 1200’ feet of elevation gain. We will add an extension midway up of roughly 0.7 mile to make it (sort of) an even 8 miles. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, exit at Topanga Canyon Boulevard (CA 27)\, drive south over the crest of the mountains and proceed three miles to Entrada Road (not Entrado!) and turn left. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park’s main parking lot (about one mile) \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway\, travel north on Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, pass the post office at the center of “town\,” then turn right on Entrada Road. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Potrero Ridge from Mountain Creek Dr – Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:For this adventure\, we’ll hike a lollipop loop\, starting at the Potrero Ridge trailhead off Mountain Creek Drive in Newbury Park\, climb to the top of the ridge and follow it west to the heart of the Dos Vientos trail system. From there we’ll make a clockwise loop along several trails\, starting with Sierra Vista\, then return to the cars via Potrero Ridge. About half of this hike will cover trails from our normal Dos Vientos loop hike\, but the other half we be on different trails. If is it clear we will see views of Oxnard and perhaps the islands. \nThe distance is 6 miles and the elevation gain is 1200 feet. \nThere is no cover on this hike as it climbs up and down the ridges of Dos Vientos\, so be sure to bring plenty of water and protection from the sun. \nUPDATE: Please review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start (early to beat the heat) our hike near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. Rosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. It provides views of Wood Ranch Reservoir\, Simi Valley\, northern Thousand Oaks\, and the Tierra Rejada Valley. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler\, Slower\, Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike is in addition to Laurie’s hike on the same day and same park\, but a totally different area. We will also go a bit slower and we will skip the Moonridge Trail and head strait to the Stagecoach Bluff Trail via the Mesa Trail. Hopefully\, we can meet up with Laurie’s hike for lunch. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. Currently\, it’s very beautiful with an abundance of wildflowers and California poppies in addition to powerful waterfalls. \nIt will start at the main parking lot for Wildwood and pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 800’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:Conejo Canyons/Western plateau Loop via Lichen Trail - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at the Hill Canyon Trail and continues to the Lichen Trail via the Western Plateau and Outlaw Trails. At the peak of the ridge that separates the Western Plateau from the Santa Rosa Valley\, you’ll have amazing views of a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. We will then hike to the power station via the Lichen Trail and take a short break to enjoy the view. Lastly\, we’ll head down the ridgeline to Hawk Canyon Trail and back to our cars. \nThis hike is about 6 miles with an approximate elevation of 1000’ gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Conejo Mountain's Majesty
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a hike from Dos Vientos Community Park to the very tippy-top of Conejo Mountain\, to the north. This 6-mile hike has a total elevation gain and loss of 1\,450 feet (at least\, according to GaiaGPS). \nWe will cross Dos Vientos Community Park to Via Ricardo\, then climb the Powerline Trail to the “teardrop”\, then scale the fairly steep goat trail to the meadow at the top of Conejo Mountain\, where we’ll make our way west to the rocky peak. As this implies\, the climb from the teardrop to the meadow is pretty steep\, so we’ll take our time there. \nHowever\, once at the top\, we’ll have a truly spectacular view of Boney Mountain\, the Oxnard Plain\, the Channel Islands\, and if it’s really clear\, all the way east to Mt. Baldy and the eastern San Gabriels. \nWe’ll descend the (steep\, but not quite so steep) route back down to the upper Powerline Trail\, and retrace our steps to the cars. \nOptional Brunch / Lunch afterwards at Country Harvest  Restaurant in Newbury Park \nDIRECTIONS\nExit 101 at Borchard\, and drive southwest past Wendy\, Reino\, and up and over the pass into the Dos Vientos subdivision. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy - 8:30 Start
DESCRIPTION:While the heat is once again with us\, we will take this at a gentler pace and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views west to Port Hueneme\, Oxnard and the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not hazy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is poison oak at the Monument; if you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. SUMMARY:Conejo Fall Trail Work Day and Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Come and join your COSCA and COSF friends to fix up some of Conejo Valley’s most popular trails in Wildwood Park! \nWe’re still recovering from the many rainstorms we had last winter. You can help us restore them during the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency’s (COSCA) Fall Trail Work Day on Saturday October 21. We will be working on the Santa Rosa Trail and Stagecoach Bluff Trail. If we get enough volunteers we may be able to work on another trail too. We will return at noon for a Thank-You lunch and prize give-away courtesy of the Conejo Open Space Foundation (COSF) and COSCA. \nMeet at the INNER parking lot at Wildwood at 7:30 am to register and be ready to walk to the work area by 8. We will return at noon for a Thank You lunch. To speed up the sign-in process\, we would appreciate it if you could register online in advance at https://cosf.org/meetup/ Advance registration will also help us plan for the number of people to feed! \nThanks for registering in advance! \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. No experience needed – everyone works at a rate they’re comfortable with and takes lots of breaks. \nWear sturdy hiking boots with good lugs\, long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sunglasses\, sunblock and a hat\, and bring water and snacks. SUMMARY:Saturday Extra - Oakbrook Vista and Sandstone Hills Trail
DESCRIPTION:This gentler intermediate hike allows us a chance to get in a hike before our weekend events kick in.\nThis is an out-and-back 5.7 mile hike with a gain/loss of +/-1200’. It provides a great overview of the Thousand Oaks area\, the ocean and the western Santa Monica Mountains. We’ll take the narrow trail that zigzags its way up and then take the trail to the power pole at the top. You’ll be enjoying 360 degree views toward Simi Peak\, Lang Ranch and Woodridge trails. \nDirections: \nFrom 101: Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.2 miles to Lang Ranch Parkway\, then turn right. We will meet under the solar panels and NOT by the tennis courts. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\n\nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hike\, and we will finish in 2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I will mark the trail if necessary\, but I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). SUMMARY:Newton Canyon to Trancas Canyon
DESCRIPTION:From the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail headed west\, crossing over Zuma Ridge Motorway toward Trancas Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross a stream (haha)\, pass under an oak canopy (a little\, anyway)\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and you’ll see Upper Newton Falls spilling (ah\, those were the days) through them like a ribbon. \nThis is an out and back hike for a total of 8 miles\, with 1475′ total elevation gain. A little shade\, a lot of sun\, all single track – prepare accordingly. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. DESCRIPTION:Let’s reacquaint ourselves with the spectacular rock formations and beautiful scenery in Red Rock Canyon\, between Topanga and Calabasas. This hike is 5.25 miles and 1\,000′ total feet of gain\, loss\, gain\, loss\, gain\, and loss :-). [See the photos for more scenery]; A map of our route is in the Photos and on GaiaGPS. \nThe main route is on a fire road\, but we will take a side trail to a rock formation (above) at the top of a trail with somewhat loose rock\, so be sure the tread on your shoes is in good shape. Trekking poles may be helpful. \nDIRECTIONS\nExit 101 onto Las Virgenes\, and drive south to Mulholland. Turn left on Mulholland and pass the headquarters of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area at King Gillette Ranch\, and continue until the (somewhat obscure) right hand turn onto Stunt Road. SUMMARY:Gentler Friendly ~ Oak Creek Canyon\, Los Robles East In/Out
DESCRIPTION:This is meeting in the same area (Los Robles Open Space) as Laurie’s longer hike\, but in a different parking area (the end of Greeenmeadow Avenue). This hike is much shorter (5 miles) and slower\, for those of you who want a more leisurely pace. \nOak Creek Canyon Trail is a rather special trail in Los Robles Open Space that is designed for the blind as well as the sighted and is shaded by a canopy of oaks. \nWe will start at Oak Creek Canyon and proceed to a connector trail a short distance until we meet a junction with Los Robles Trail East. Along this trail\, you’ll travel through a couple of very nice oak groves\, and get some great views throughout the Los Robles Trail East. We will turn around when we hit 2 1/2 miles. \nThis hike will be a five-mile In/Out with about a 900’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: From the 101 freeway\, Exit Moorpark and drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go about a quarter mile to the parking lot.
