SUMMARY:Arroyo Conejo Trail to Lynnmere Trail ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start by following the pleasant single-track on the left (not the road to the right\, which descends to a dead-end at the creek) from the Rancho Conejo Playfields in Newbury Park. The trail skirts the edge of a neighborhood and its steep-walled canyon\, which provides great scenic views along the Barranca and through riparian native plant communities\, Wildwood Park\, and the Pacific Ocean. There is a creek crossing with rocks and wood pallets to make “dry crossing” easy when we reach the bottom of the canyon. Then\, we will turn right at a T-junction and begin a steady climb out of the canyon to the Lynnmere Trail. The trail passes the backs of some houses\, dips into a woodland\, and emerges into a meadow where we get a panoramic view to the west. Here\, we will retrace our way back to the Arroyo Conejo Trail and back to the parking lot. \nThis hike is about 5 miles long with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom 101 Freeway\, drive 1/4 mile north on Ventu Park Rd. Turn right into the parking lot at the Rancho Conejo Playfields and the Arroyo Conejo trailhead is on the right. \nPLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list. \n\n\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level. \n\n\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes. \n\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Intermediate Hike ~ Palo Comado / Cheseboro Loop via Ranch Center trail
DESCRIPTION:This week we’ll do a loop around the northeastern regions of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and the Las Virgenes Open Space. This area traverses many ecosystems\, including riparian\, chaparral\, and the rockscape from Galaxy Quest. The area is generally dry\, but very nice! \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/3/0/c/event_255709932.jpeg \nThe trailhead is where Sunnycrest turns into Doubletree\, about a mile east of Kanan Road (34°10’56.67″N\, 118°45’6.44″W). The area under the trees is shady all day long; get there early to get a good spot. \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/5/a/c/event_255981932.jpeg \nWe’ll be hiking about 7 miles/1100’ gain over the course of 2 1/2 hours and will traverse parts of Ranch Center\, Cheseboro\, Sheep Corral and Palo Comado canyons. We’ll see Sulphur Springs\, the Baleen Wall and Shepherd’s Flat. The hike includes fire roads\, single-tracks\, and an exhilarating wakeup call near the beginning\, where we travel up and down 400′ over the course of the 1.1 mile Ranch Center section of the trail. \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/f/5/e/event_255717182.jpeg \nBring sunscreen\, plenty of water\, and wear sturdy shoes and a sun hat. SUMMARY:Backbone Quickie - Encinal to "The Tree"
DESCRIPTION:Barbara and Sharon showed me this hike a couple of weeks ago\, and it was delightful. If you’re deep on the waitlist for Cheryl’s hike\, you may want to consider joining this one. \nWe’ll start at the Encinal Backbone trailhead parking lot\, cross the road\, and then take The Backbone Trail southeast for a couple of miles until we get to the place we often turn around when coming from Kanan Road. There’s “The Tree” at the gravel road crossover there. Along the way\, we’ll see the plaque placed to commemorate the completion of the Backbone Trail in 2016. \nThis route has more than the usual amount of shade\, trees that somehow managed to survive the Woolsey Fire. There are two or three water crossings each way\, so prepare to get your feet wet with cold\, clear water. There are also a couple of climbs\, so this isn’t a Beginner hike. \nTotal distance: just under 5 miles\, with a 600’ climb and descent. \nBring sunscreen\, plenty of water\, and wear sturdy shoes and a sun hat. Please consider bringing the 10 essentials (). \nOur departure time is 8:30 am sharp. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\n\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Wildwood to Santa Rosa Trail through Box Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Let’s hike a loop through Wildwood. \nWildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for Davy Crocket\, The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nThis hike takes us from the main parking lot up the Santa Rosa Trail to Mount Clef Ridge\, providing sweeping views of the park\, the Santa Rosa Valley\, & maybe the Channel Islands if it’s clear. \nDescending into the valley\, we’ll pass the famed train yard\, as well as other quirky estates. \nWe will take the Box Canyon Trail and the Mesa Trail back before heading back to the parking lot. \nOur route will be approximately 6 1/2 miles and 1000 +’ of elevation gain. Much of the hike is exposed and the Box Canyon climb toward the end is work – so dress appropriately\, and make sure you have plenty of water or beverage of choice. Bring your cellphone and poles if you like them. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nWatch for cross traffic coming from the right when you turn into the parking lot- they don’t have to stop. Parking is ample and free. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. SUMMARY:Top of the Santa Monicas- Sandstone Peak!
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be looping around the Backbone and Mishe Mokwa Trails for 6.5 miles\, moving up approximately 1500′ as we go. \nEarly on\, we’ll pass Echo Cliffs\, where rock climbers ascend sheer cliffs\, a house sized boulder delicately balanced on a small rock beneath\, a giant split rock\, stunning giant sandstone formations\, and breathtaking views. \nSince rock scrambling will be required to get to the top of Sandstone Peak\, we will likely skip that section. \nDirections: \nDirections to the Sandstone Peak Trailhead:\nFrom Westlake Village\, exit on Westlake Blvd (CA-23 South) from the 101 Freeway\, and follow it south for several miles (approximately 7 miles) to stop sign for Mulholland West (Note: Westlake Blvd. will merge with Mulholland West before you reach the stop sign). At the stop sign\, turn right onto Mulholland (West) for about 0.4 miles. Turn right onto Little Sycamore Canyon\, which becomes Yerba Buena Road after 1.4 miles\, for 4 1/2 miles to Sandstone Peak trailhead. The Sandstone Peak lot is on the right side of the road. Look for large Sandstone Peak sign. The parking lot is above Yerba Buena Road and there is a bathroom in the parking lot. If you pass the Circle X Ranch\, you went too far. \nNote: This is a very slow driving route (narrow\, with sharp turns) and will take 20-30 minutes from the 101 to the parking lot. Give yourself plenty of time. Cell reception is marginal (at best) up there\, so we won’t be waiting on any “I’m late” calls. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nRead about The Weekday Trailblazers and our policies here:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/the-weekday-trailblazers/ \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \nThere are no “Plus One’s” on this hike. SUMMARY:Ray Miller trail up to the fire road
DESCRIPTION:It’s still going to be a bit warm\, and humid\, but if we start at 8:30 I think we will be okay. We will go up the Ray Miller trail to the fire road and back\, about 6 miles. This is an out and back so you can go at your own pace\, but there will probably be another hike posted that will no doubt be faster than my hike. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views unless it’s foggy. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although it is often foggy this time of year. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, bring sunscreen\, hopefully there will be some clouds. It may be mosquito season so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Kanan Dume Almost to Castro Peak OAB (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:Our Out And Back (OAB) hike will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 60-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 3 1/2 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific\, but the route eventually gives way to open hillsides and ridgelines\, and an open area over the Pacific. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 7 miles with 1550 feet of elevation gain. \nNo “Plus Ones” allowed. \nNo dogs allowed on the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. Free parking is available at the trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Fall on Autumn Ridge - A Seven Trail Walkabout
DESCRIPTION:Let’s celebrate the first full week of fall with a seven (7) trail tour in and around the Lang Ranch Open Space. From our Lang Ranch starting point (end of North Westlake Blvd) we will take the Autumn Ridge Trail to the Sunrise Trail and the Woodridge Connector which climbs up and over the ridge to Wood Ranch. From there we will use the Long Canyon Trail to climb to the first of our panoramic vistas at the top of Long Canyon. Then we rollercoaster down and up the Meadow Vista Trail to sweeping views of the Woodridge Open Space (and our old friend the Albertson Motorway). To complete our circuit we return via Rocky Incline Trail (aka ‘Hidden Canyon”) to Alapay Trail to Autumn Ridge. \nSounds like a lot but don’t worry\, our 7 trail adventure is just under 6 miles with 1\,100 foot elevation gain/loss. But\, keep in mind that the route is exposed and sometimes steep so bring plenty of water\, wear sturdy shoes and bring trekking poles if you use them. \nTo get to the trailhead\, exit 101 at Westlake Boulevard\, and drive north until it dead-ends at the transition between Oak Valley Lane and Autumn Ridge Drive. This is about a half-mile north of Lang Ranch Parkway (Chumash Museum)\, but offers an alternative entry into this area. SUMMARY:Talepop Flip-Flop
DESCRIPTION:We haven’t been on the Talepop Trail for quite some time\, so let’s go! \nWhen I pre-hiked the route on Sunday morning\, I saw four or five deer\, lots of crows\, some vultures\, and a tarantula\, but no snakes\, poison oak\, or thistles on the trail. \nWhy Flip-Flop? I did find a pair of abandoned flip-flops near the top of the ridgeline\, and stuck them\, very visibly\, in brush next to the trail. We’ll see if they’re still there on Thursday 🙂 \nWe’ll start at Juan Bautista De Anza Park\, at the corner of Lost Hills and Las Virgenes. We’ll hike down the Talepop Trail\, on the ridgeline between Liberty and Malibu Canyons\, across the North Meadowlands Trail\, then up the Las Virgenes Fire Road\, back to the park. The total distance is 4.2 miles\, with an elevation gain and loss of about 500 feet. \nWhile relatively short\, this is a gorgeous hike\, with sightlines into Malibu Creek State Park\, into the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area\, and across to the area that is south of the new wildlife bridge. \nBrunch / Lunch afterwards at Eastern Bagel / Sea Casa at Westlake Boulevard and Agoura Road (we’ll finish too early for the restaurants at Agoura & Las Virgenes). I’ve confirmed with both that they’ll be open by 9 am on Thursday. \nDIRECTIONS\nExit 101 at Lost Hills Road\, and drive south one mile. Just before getting to Las Virgenes Road\, turn right into the De Anza Park parking lot. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.
