DESCRIPTION:Sorry for the short notice but the forecast for thunderstorms has waffled back and forth. It finally looks like Sunday will be a day with zero T’storm chances. \nHike to the summit via the Ski Hut trail and descend via the Backbone trail to the Notch and then via the service road back down to Manker Flats or take the lift\, your coice \nBring snacks for the summit and trail. \nAdvanced Intermediate Hikers. You should have Mt. Baldy Summit experience via the Backbone Trail beforehand. \n \nStats: \nDistance: 11 miles \nElevation Gain: ~4\,000 ft. \nMax elevation : 10\,064 ft. \nRating: 7/10 Strenuous \nTrail: Looped some pavement\, fire roads\, but mostly single track and rocky trails \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks \nHiking Poles (Recommended) \nLayered clothing (can be windy & chilly at the summit) \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=91759&searchType=WEATHER) \nNOTE: \nThis is considered a high altitude hike and high altitude sickness\, AKA acute mountain sickness\, is a possibility. Good Physical health is important. The San Antonio Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl Trail is considered the most direct route to the summit of Mount Baldy (10\,064′). This climb is considered strenuous. \nAs you approach the Manker Flat parking area you will be on a 4 lane road with a wide center divider. Parking is on both sides and in the divider. After you pass the Manker Flats campground on the right\, look for Angeles Falls Road. There is access through the divider at this point\, so you can turn left and park hopefully closer to the trail head. There is a gate across Angeles Falls road and porta potties. This is the trail head. The road up to Baldy is VERY curvy with VERY tight turns. Anybody who does not like twisty roads with dropoffs should be a passenger! \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. DESCRIPTION:Distance: 9> \nRating: 7/10\, not for beginners \nPace: Intermediate/advanced (will be at my pace) \nThere won’t be a sweeper!! \nElevation 2620’ gain \nParking permit-adventure pass required \nRain Cancels \nAccording to historian John Robinson\, the name “Icehouse Canyon” dates from the 1860s when an ice plant in the lower canyon supplied ice to valley residents. The ice business is long gone but the name is still fitting as frigid air often blows through the canyon and can even chill the hiker on an early summer morning; in the winter it can be a deep freeze. \nTestimony to the canyon’s grandeur is the significant number of visitors it draws. On a fair-weather weekend\, expect to share the trail with swarms of hikers. Even on a weekday you probably won’t have the trail to yourself. \n \nDirections: Check your local map to plan a route to the 210 freeway traveling east from Pasadena past the 57 freeway. As you enter the town of Upland\, exit at Base Line\, turn left on Base Line and take the first right on Padua Ave. Make a right on Mt. Baldy Road into the mountains towards Baldy Village. A couple miles after Baldy Village you will enter the parking lot for Ice House Canyon. The entrance to the parking lot is just before the road hairpins to the left up to the Chairlifts. Make sure you do not keep going up to the lifts. There is a little road block right there where a wonderful lil’ lady by the name a Dee Hanson sells honey\, and “National Forest Service Adventure Pass” parking permits. You will want to grab one of these permits for $5.00. DESCRIPTION:Advanced Hikers Only\, with Previous Summit Experience! \nWe’ll be taking the Bear Canyon Trail that starts in Baldy Village and hiking to the summit and returning the same way. \nBe careful where you park! Do not park in the lot across from the Baldy Lodge & Saloon. You must find a place on the street that is not restricted. \nDistance: 12 miles \nElevation Gain: 6\,000ft \nElevation at the Summit: 10\,064ft. \nTotal Duration: 7-9.5 hours depending on your hiking speed. \nRating: 9/10 Strenuous \nTrail: Unmaintained trail but well traveled. \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks & Lunch \nHiking Poles (Recommended) \nLayered clothing (can be windy & chilly at the summit) \nTHE PLAN: \nThis is the original trail to the Mt. Baldy summit that was first used in the late 1880’s and 1890’s. At that time travelers would be brought by horseback to a stone lodge at the summit via this route for overnight alpine getaways. Today\, this is considered a must do training hike for Mt. Whitney and other high peaks in the Sierra’s (no\, not for the horses… ) Why? In six miles you will ascend 6\,000ft\, which places this grade definitely in the ‘aggressive’ category. \nThe trail begins about 100 yards south of the NFS Baldy Visitor Center and behind the church. We will assemble in the church parking lot in view of Mt. Baldy road. \nTo reach the trail head we proceed up a road for about 1/2 mile passing by some extraordinary private homes nestled in this beautiful canyon with a year long stream. Its easy to see why this road was the first to be settled in Baldy area. Once we leave the cabins behind the real hike begins. \nFour Part Hike: \nPart 1 is the relatively easy to moderate initial climb out of the village. The first half of this section is shaded with oak and your typical Southern California vegetation as it follows the creek canyon. This section ends (mentally anyway) when you reach the lush open area of the Bear Flat camp site. Note: There is no water past this point. \nPart 2 is basically switch-backing up a steep east\, south-east mountain slope. The switchbacks are quite numerous\, and your goal should be to ascend this section before the morning sun gets to work as the trail is totally exposed here. It’s not a particularly pleasant hike at this point. \nPart 3 begins as you top the east facing slope and start working up the ridge-line that will take you much of the way towards the summit and into the alpine forest zone. The grade is steep here\, and as you progress\, quick rest stops are perfectly OK to let your leg muscles stop screaming. The views on this section are actually quite stunning\, with vistas of all the surrounding San Gabriel ranges. You will pass through two or three mountain saddles with relatively level ground and some shaded areas on the way\, but frankly\, its up and up and up for most of this hike. \nSection 4 takes you to the summit and here you will transition out of the alpine zone and into a mixed alpine high-altitude environment with lots of ground-up decomposing granite. You will cross a razor back ridge that presents no problems in the summer time and proceed on up to the final push to the summit. Don’t be fooled by what seems like your first glimpse of the summit\, you are actually viewing West Baldy. As you approach\, you will actually be traversing along the slope of West Baldy before beginning the final push to the Mt. Baldy Summit. Keep a sharp eye out for the trail marker and bear right to reach Mt. Baldy proper. You will soon see piles of stones built as wind shelters in the distance as you look towards the summit. DESCRIPTION:The Stats \nDistance: 14 miles Up and back Elevation Gain/Loss: 4800 ft. \nRating: Moderate to Strenuous 8/10 \nTrail: Single track\, some fire road at the end. Upper 2/3 of the trail is shaded. \nDuration: roughly 8 or 9 hours \nWe will stop for lunch at the Cosmic Cafe Pavilion (outdoor seating only) at the summit. Eat theirs or bring your own! \nhttp://www.mtwilson.edu/cafe.php \nTrail Description \nThe Mt. Wilson Trail is a former Gabrielino Indian trail that snaked through breath-taking Little Santa Anita Canyon to the top of Mt. Wilson. White settlers in the area used the trail in the mid to late 19th century for access to the harvesting of pine and spruce higher on the slope of the canyon. Those were the days when California grizzlies were common in the San Gabriels. \nThis trail is the site of an annual 8.6 mile race from the downtown plaza of Sierra Madre to Orchard Camp and back. This race was first run in 1908 all the way to Mt. Wilson. Its modern incarnation\, begun in 1967\, is of course much shorter. \nApart from a route from Chantry Flat through Big Santa Anita Canyon \, the Mt. Wilson Trail is the most popular route to the top of Mt. Wilson. \nThe trailhead is at 970 feet elevation. \nThe Mt. Wilson Trail ascends the western slope of Little Santa Anita Canyon. Be advised that this trail is one of the steeper ones in the San Gabriel mountains. About ½ mile from the start\, you will come to a noticeable point where the trail crosses a ridge. The ridge on your right side runs down to the creek. \nAt 1.2 miles\, you will reach First Water Junction\, where you go left up the trail. \nAt about 2.75 miles from the start\, you will reach Decker Springs where you will quickly drop into the creek and just as quickly ascend. From here\, it is about 1/3 of a mile to Orchard Camp\, a nice shady rest spot if you’re so inclined. \nFrom Orchard\, it is 1.9 miles to Manzanita Ridge where you will connect with the Winter Creek Trail coming from Chantry Flat. Go left (northwest) and continue to a major junction where the trail meets the Mt. Wilson Toll Road coming up from Altadena through Eaton Canyon. Here\, the southeast ridge of Mt. Harvard meets the road and Mt. Harvard is to your left. \nAt the trail/toll road junction\, turn right and proceed up the toll road. When you come to a structure (known as Martin’s Cabin) on the left side of the road\, look immediately to your right and you will encounter the resumption of the Mt. Wilson Trail. This point is about a mile distance from the Manzanita Ridge. Proceed up the trail\, now single track again\, .75 miles to the parking lot summit of Mt. Wilson. \nNo permits are needed for hiking this trail to Mt. Wilson. Neither is an Adventure Pass required to park at the trailhead because it is not located within the Angeles National Forest. \nDirectionsThe Mt. Wilson Trail trailhead is located within the city limits of Sierra Madre. From the 210 Freeway\, exit Baldwin Ave. and go north. When you come to a traffic light where you have to go either right or left\, go left to the next light and that is Baldwin Ave. Take a right and continue up Baldwin Ave. through the downtown area of Sierra Madre. Approximately ¾’s of a mile from the downtown plaza\, take a right on Mira Monte. Go down about ½ mile and you will come to a small park on your left. Park anywhere in this area long Mira Monte. (Note: it seems that Sierra Madre police are serious about curbing your vehicle’s wheels). To get to the trail\, walk up the paved road that heads north off of Mira Monte next to the park. SUMMARY:Gabrielino Trail ~ Sunday Stroll to Carmen's Waterfall
DESCRIPTION:We hiked the Gabrielino Trail a few years ago when Carmen noticed a waterfall just off trail. We went in search of the base of the falls last year and were not disappointed. It was quite a pleasant spot to take our lunch break. There should be even more water flowing after the recent rain. \nThis is a beautiful canyon and the fall colors should be putting on a show right about now. Hike will be at a moderate pace – not in any hurry and want to enjoy the scenery. Bring warm layers. The shaded canyon will be cool.*Note – Sunday is Halloween so double-check your plans before signing up. \nSTATS \nDistance: 10-11 miles \nRating: 5/10 \nElevation gain: >1500 feet \nThe Trail: Canyon trail\, out and back\, uneven footing\, possible bushwhacking \nParking Pass: Not Required \nThe Plan: \nWe will meet where Gould Mesa road meets the Angeles Crest Highway. The plan is to hike up the canyon five to six miles\, take an early lunch break at the waterfall\, then head back the way we came. The canyon is nicely shaded with big beautiful trees and some rock hopping across the Arroyo Seco. The last mile back to cars climbs 500 feet on a paved road. \nLarge swaths of the trail were destroyed by the 2009 Station Fire and subsequent El Niño storms. Sections that survived had suffered years of erosion and lack of use or maintenance. It was virtually impassable due to hundreds of downed trees\, rock slides\, heavy sloughing and failed support structures. In the years shortly after the fire\, a few people who ignored the closure order ended up lost and needing rescue. \nDirections: \nFrom the 210 Freeway take exit 20\, Angeles Crest Hwy (CA-2) towards the mountains. In about 2 miles and shortly past Bay Tree Rd (on the left) you will see parking on the right. SUMMARY:Mill Creek Summit to Mt. Pacifico and Return
DESCRIPTION:Hike to Mt. Pacifico via the PCT from the Mill Creek Summit Ranger Station at the crest of the Angeles Forest Hwy and return. The top of Mt. Pacifico has very nice picnic tables and is a frequent destination for campers. \nThere is LOTS of exposure on this hike\, so be prepared for lots of sun.Mt. Pacifico itself is beautiful and in the trees. \nA word of caution\, Mt. Pacifico lies just west of the western edge of the Bobcat fire closure. Ontario Peak\, with its 8\,693′ summit\, offers spectacular views of the entire area including the inland empire (on a clear day)\, the San Jacintos\, the San Bernardinos\, the Santa Ana Mountain range which lies directly south\, and the majority of the other major peaks in the area\, such as Baldy\, the three T’s\, Cucamonga\, etc… The hike begins in Icehouse Canyon\, the hikers’ gateway to the eastern high country and the Cucamonga Wilderness. Its broad\, V shaped portal leads east from San Antonio Canyon\, 10 miles north of Mt. Baldy Village\, and climbs 2600′ to Icehouse Saddle\, a prominent gap on the great Telegraph Ontario Ridge. The saddle is a major trail junction\, with routes leading in four directions. From the saddle we’ll follow the trail up past Kelly’s Camp\, climbing a further 500′ to the summit to enjoy the view and lunch. As always know your limits\, bring ample quantities of water\, a hat and sunscreen\, good hiking shoes. Walking sticks would be helpful in certain areas. \nThe Norman Ollestad Story \nOn February 19\, 1979\, 11-year-old Norman Ollestad was traveling from Santa Monica airport into Big Bear to retrieve a skiing trophy he had won the day before. Along for the ride were his father\, his father’s girlfriend\, Sandra\, and the pilot of the small\, chartered Cessna. \nAbout fifteen minutes into the flight\, they were caught up in a blizzard and the plane crashed into Ontario Peak mountain and Norman’s father and the pilot were instantly killed. Norman and Sandra survived\, but she had a broken arm and a severe head injury. Cut off from radar\, and in the middle of a near white-out\, little Norman had to lead them down to safety with Sandra\, sometimes\, literally on his back. The dangerous trek down the steep mountain lasted 9 hours\, and when it was over\, Sandra too\, was dead. Frostbitten and barely able to walk\, Norman was the only survivor of the tragedy. \nNorman wrote of his experience in Crazy for the Storm (http://www.crazyforthestorm.com/index.php). \nDirections: Check your local map to plan a route to the 210 freeway traveling east from Pasadena past the 57 freeway. SUMMARY:Las Llajas Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:It looks like we can once again make a nice 10 mile loop up Las Llajas Canyon. We’ll pass by some of the first oil wells drilled in California in the early 1900’s and take a break at the 1920’s excavator left behind from the Coquina Mine. \nSTATS \nDistance: 10+ mi \nElevation Gain: 2\,200 ft \nRating: 7/10 \nTrail: Fire-road\, trail\, loop \nPace: Moderate \nFees/pass: none \nTHE STORY \nIn the early 1900s this land was owned by the Simi Valley Oil Company and later purchased by Howard Marr in the 1920s. It became known as Marrland. In 1929 Howard Marr leased a portion of his land to the Tapo Alto Shell and Fertilizer Company to mine for limestone. \nHeavy equipment was brought in to strip the hilltop of an unusually pure form of calcium carbonate from a fossilized reef called Coquina Limestone (shell or oyster limestone). The State Department of Agriculture found it to be 98% pure. At one time\, this entire area was underwater and you can see evidence of this in the thousands of shells embedded in the rock near the mine. \nMining operations ceased in 1935. The road used to bring in equipment had been largely washed away and much of the mining equipment was left behind. The main attraction is the P&H Company power shovel. It’s a Model 206\, considered to be a small power shovel but it put P&H on the map. The company would ultimately meet its downfall due to asbestos in the brake linings. Asbestos was touted as a miracle mineral for much of the 20th century. At P&H’s manufacturing plants\, brake linings regularly had to be grinded down in order to fit casings on cranes and other machinery. The process released large amounts of asbestos dust into the air\, polluting the work environment and putting workers’ health at risk. \nSome interesting history about the name: Las Llajas was first used in 1931 and is likely a misspelling of the spanish words las llagas which translates to the wounds\, referring to the stigmata of a Roman Catholic saint. From 1914-1920 a cult called Pisgah Grande lived in this canyon and created a secluded colony with 30 buildings. It had over 300 members. If you look in the right places\, you can still find old bricks stamped with Pisgah markings where buildings used to rest. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:The scenic route to Mt. Baden-Powell from Dawson Saddle and Return
DESCRIPTION:Our route takes us up the Dawson saddle and connects with the PCT just east of Throop Peak. From there we proceed east on a steady grade on the PCT passing Mt. Burham and then up and onto Mt. Baden Powell. At the top we will plan on having a snack\, signing the register and taking some great photographs of the scenery and the Boy Scout summit monument. \nDistance: 9.5 miles Duration: 5-6 Hours. \nLunch and or drinks at Newcomb’s Ranch Cafe after is an option. \nElevation Gain: 2\,600 ft. \nElevation at Mt. Baden Powell: 9\,380 ft. \nRating: Moderate 6/10 Out and Back \nAbout the hike:Some years ago the Boy Scouts built a beautiful feeder route to the Pacific Crest Trail from Dawson Saddle on Hwy 2. The neat thing is\, the trail head at the highway is at 7\,900 feet\, the highest elevation for the entire Angeles Crest Hwy 2. \nWhat does this mean for us? Simply put\, with a moderate amount of effort you can experience the prettiest portion of the PCT in Southern California and summit Mt. Baden Powell through the back door\, all without the 4 mile vertical slug fest coming up from Vincent Gap. This entire route generates incredible vistas as you traverse the spine of the back range of the San Gabriels. On one side is the the Mojave Desert while Los Angeles spreads out beneath on the other. The views on this hike just keep getting better and better until they culminate on the summit of Baden-Powell with 360 degree views that go on to infinity\, simply an amazing place. DESCRIPTION:Want to walk off some of that Thanksgiving feast and not deal with the shopping mall crowds? Then let’s do our annual after Thanksgiving Day Don’s Rocky IV Not the Movie. This is about a five hour hike\, so we should be back to our cars by 2:00pm or thereabouts. \n \nDistance: 9 miles Dual Rating: Baldy Lovers: 3/10 Baldy Haters: 6/10 \nElevation gain: 1400 feet The Trail: A figure 8 loop through 4 rocky parks. \nThe Plan: I’ve improved a previous route as we’ll be taking the Old Stagecoach Road to Rocky Peak to Corriganville Park via the Wildlife Corridor to Chatsworth Park to our cars. \nBring lunch as there are ample picnic tables in Corriganville. \nThe Old Santa Susana Stagecoach Road is a route taken by early travelers between the San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley near Chatsworth\, California via the Santa Susana Pass. The main route climbs through what is now Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park\, with a branch in Chatsworth Park South. It was an important artery linking the Los Angeles Basin and inland Ventura county\, and was part of the main route for travel by stagecoach between Los Angeles and San Francisco from 1861 until the opening of rail traffic between the cities in 1876. The Old Santa Susana Stage Road is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nDogs are welcome\, if friendly and must be leashed\, washed\, fed and picked up after. SUMMARY:Mt. Hillyer from Chilao Flat Visitor Center
DESCRIPTION:This is a short\, but very sweet hike with lots of eye candy including fall colors\, impressive boulder outcroppings and interesting historical significance. I am open to extending the distance in any direction to add more mileage (as an out and back)\, but due to trailhead closures still in effect\, we cannot make this a true shuttle hike to and from Three Points or Devils Canyon Trailhead which are both still closed\, per Angeles Forest Order. \nChilao Visitor Center to Silver Moccasin Trail (.5 mile)Silver Moccasin Trail to Horse Flats Campground (1 mile)Horse Flats Campground to Mt. Hillyer via Mt. Hillyer Trail (2.5 miles)Return the same route. \nDISTANCE: ~6 milesELEVATION GAIN: ~1\,100′PARKING: If parking anyplace other than the Visitor Center\, a National Forest Adventure Pass is required to be displayed on vehicles parked while visitors are hiking. \nDirections: From I-210 in La Canada\, take the Angeles Crest Highway (route 2) northeast for 26 miles to the turnout for the Chilao Flat Visitor Center (not to be confused with the turnout for the Chilao Campground\, which comes earlier if you’re coming from L.A.) Turn left and park at the Visitor Center\, as the parking at the Silver Moccasin trailhead is very limited. \nHISTORY: Named for Mary Hillyer (ca.1865-1933)\, described by Robinson as “a competent and much beloved clerk” who worked during the 1920’s in the office of William V. Mendenhall\, the Angeles National Forest Supervisor (1929-57). Nevertheless\, it has often been argued that this summit might have been more appropriately titled after one of its early residents. This area was once deep in the forest and is rich in lore. The main Gabrieleño cross-mountain trail passed by this peak\, however Indian names for this area are long forgotten. It was criscrossed by bandidos during the wide-open years when Los Angeles was busy earning the title of “Murder Capitol of America”. About this time\, the first known dweller near “Hillyer” was the romantic and self-described “caballero” Tiburcio Vasquez (1835-75) who made the eastern slopes of this peak his mountain headquarters. Deeply resenting the results of the Mexican American War\, he considered himself a guerrilla freedom-fighter who wouldn’t admit defeat. He boasted no jail could hold him (probably because he had a girl in every hamlet and they usually came to his rescue) but eventually he was convicted and hung for being a notorious horse thief. Vasquez Rocks\, and Vasquez Canyon are also named for him. “Horse Flats” below the summit of “Hillyer” is so named because Vasquez often pastured his herds there. \nJose Gonzales\, one of his vaqueros\, was very handy with a knife. But when he dispatched a bear with one\, his amazed pals nicknamed him “Chillia”which refers to “chili pepper”\, and could translate as “hot\, stuff”. \nIn close proximity to Mt. Hillyer\, the first American pioneer to settle the forest was Lewis Newcomb (ca.1860-1950). He settled here in 1890\, and began a solitary life as one of the most well-known and knowledgeable of local mountain men. He homesteaded a quarter-section\, and because of his intimate knowledge of these mountains was appointed as one of the first Forest Ranger’s in the newly created San Gabriel Timberland Reserve (1898). He was involved in the construction of many structures both for friends and for the Forest Service. He built the nation’s first Ranger Station at West Fork (1900) as well as the one at Pine (now Charlton) Flat (1902) where he served for many years. He is responsible for both blazing many mountain trails such as the one down “Shortcut Canyon” and over the east slope of Mount Wilson to Santa Anita Canyon. In 1910 he built his third log home that is still cited on maps as “Louie’s cabin”. His name also survives in the Newcomb Ranch Inn\, and in Newcomb Pass near Mount Wilson. He left the mountain in 1940 because he felt that the new Angeles Crest Highway (which reached here in 1938)\, had “ruined the place”. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Boney Peak (Tri Peak Optional)
DESCRIPTION:Stats: \nDistance: 9-10 miles\, 5-7 hours \nElevation Gain: 2700 ft. \nRating: Moderate 8/10 \nNot for beginners\, no sweeper! \nTrail: Looped\, will be on mostly rocky and regular trails with a very short stretch of pavement. WARNING: There will be some short stretches of steep uphill climbs where some might feel more comfortable on their hands and knees. Consider bringing gloves. \n \nThis loop hike will take us along some nearby beautiful and isolated trails in the Boney Mountain State Wilderness Area of Point Mugu State Park to the spectacular rock formations of Tripeaks and then just a quarter mile further to the Boney Overlook. After lunch at Boney \, we’ll head back down via the Upper Cabin Trail after pausing briefly at Boney\, past the old cabin site (Danielson Memorial) and back to the cars. \n \nThe Western Ridge trail gets quite a bit of use but is not officially maintained so it is very narrow in places. Overall it is quite steep\, climbing 1200 feet in 1.2 miles\, and it has some short and very steep sections. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants are strongly recommended to help protect against scratches from the chaparral. A few scratches\, however\, are worth the outstanding views we’ll have to the west and south. The trail back isn’t quite as steep\, but it is loose and rutted in many places and therefore presents other slip and fall hazards. \nTripeaks: A jumble of sandstone formations with huge boulders\, caves and a nifty crevice to traverse. We could spend hours exploring just this little area\, but we’ll only have enough time to look at a few main features \n \nBoney: Commands sweeping views of Ventura County\, Westlake\, Malibu\, Point Mugu State Park and the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day the Channel Islands are visible to the west. Despite its modest elevation\, Boney Peak rises dramatically from Sycamore Canyon near Camarillo. Much of its north and western face is marked by a 1\,500 foot precipice lined with jagged formations and rocky crags. \nBring lunch. \nDirections: From the Los Angeles area take the 101 freeway north to Newbury Park in Ventura County. Exit at Wendy Drive. Turn left onto Wendy and continue to Lynn Road. Turn right onto Lynn and continue to Via Goleta. Turn left onto Via Goleta (see 1st pic) and continue to the end \n4126 1/2 W. DESCRIPTION:Distance: 9.5 MilesElevation Gain: 2800 ft.Trail: Single track\, fire road\, uneven downhills.Rating: 8/10\, due to trail conditionPace: Intermediate to advanced \nNot for beginners-there won’t be a sweeper!! \nThe Plan StoryNot many small- or medium-sized cities can boast three mountain ranges within its border\, but Glendale does. Stretching east and north from the San Fernando Valley\, the city takes in substantial parts of the San Rafael Hills and the Verdugo Mountains\, plus a small slice of the San Gabriel Mountains at the city’s northern extremity. \nAt this northernmost spot in Glendale\, overlooking the foothill communities of La Crescenta and Tujunga\, lies Deukmejian Wilderness Park\, named after the former California Governor George Deukmejian. The park’s 700 acres of chaparral-covered slopes are drained by two ravines with steep gradients: Cooks Canyon and Dunsmore Canyon. During the mid-20th Century\, the area alongside the Dunsmore Canyon stream was used by the Le Mesnager family as a vineyard\, An old stone barn at the trailhead is reminiscent of that time. \nMt. Lukens is the tallest peak within the Los Angeles city limits\, and it has spectacular views of the Los Angeles basin and surrounding mountains from the summit. \nThis trip makes a loop from Deukmejian Wilderness Park in Glendale\, ascending via the Crescenta View Trail to the Haines Canyon Motorway to Mount Lukens. Our return route will continue on the Haines Canyon Motorway to the Rim of the Valley Trail\, returning to Deukmejian Wilderness Park via Cook’s Canyon a nicely shaded area with a small creek. The views on both legs of the hike are great. If visibility is good\, expect to see Catalina Island\, Santa Barbara Island\, the entire Santa Monica range\, and more. \nThe downhill portion of the Rim of the Valley trail in particular has some areas of loose rocks and soil as well as a few Yucca maize portions. Walking sticks could be helpful to some in these areas. \n \nDogs: Welcome on this one as long as they have good trail manners and are picked up after. \nDirections: From the 210 Freeway exit Pennsylvania Ave (17A) and go north to Foothill Blvd. Turn left on Foothill Blvd. and go to New York Ave. Turn right on New York Ave. and go to the end\, Markridge Rd. Turn left on Markridge and go about 200 yards to the park entrance on your right. Follow the entry road up to the parking area. Located on the north slope of the Verdugo Mountains\, 1\,100-acre Tuna Canyon Park provides trail access into the steep upper reaches of the mountains. Here we’ll consolidate vehicles and head a little further down La Tuna to the Grotto Trailhead where we’ll start our hike. We then head up to the Verdugo Mtwy. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a (hopefully) sunny December day hike by the beach – or just come for lunch at Malibu Seafood around 1:30 – BYOB! \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 8 miles \nElevation Gain: 2000 ft. \nRating: 6/10 \nTrail: Single Track\, Fire Road\, rock scrambling and some overgrown Billie Goat trails \nDuration: 4-6 hours \nThe Plan \nWe’ll start on the Corral Canyon Trail and quickly head over to Puerco Canyon where we’ll be exploring some abandoned buildings along the way as we head uphill in the direction of the Backbone Trail. We’ll eventually come to a point overlooking Pepperdine University. It’s at this point we’ll be going on some lessor used and overgrown trails. Anyone able to bring garden clippers and help clean up the trail a bit would be great. Once we get back to a trail we’ll be looping around back to another portion of the Puerco Motorway. Eventually we will head back to the Coral Canyon trails completing our loop. \nDirections: Malibu Seafood is located on Pacific Coast Hwy about 1.8 miles west of Malibu Canyon Rd. DESCRIPTION:New Year\, New Hike – We’ve never done this route out of Corriganville to the not so secret swing cave so the stats are a guess. If you can’t join us for the main event\, feel free to walk around the ranch (approx 1-1.5 mi) and join us for a post hike BBQ. It’s mostly flat and has some interesting history. SUMMARY:Eaton Saddle to Switzer Falls -Car Shuttle
DESCRIPTION:The Stats \nNot for beginners \nDistance: 10 miles> \nElevation Gain: While mostly downhill\, there will still be at least 1500 ft. of uphill. \nRating: Moderate 7/10\, off trail\, bushwhacking\, poodle dog bush\, poison oak\, creek walking\, etc… \nDuration: 5-7 hours \nNO SWEEPER!! wait-listed \nRain\, snow – cancels the hike \nThe Plan \nWe will meet at the Switzer Falls lower parking lot\, consolidate vehicles and then head 8:30 am sharp over to Mt.Wilson Road which will get us to the Eaton Saddle. From the Eaton Saddle we’ll hike to the Tom Sloan Saddle with a couple peaks we could check out including Mt. Lowe along the way. Then from the saddle we can head back to our cars at Switzers via Bear Canyon. \nCarpooling \nSee below for details \n \nThe Story \nBy the time Thaddeus Sabieski Constantine Lowe retired to Southern California in the late 1880’s he had achieved more than most. The New Hampshire native and father of ten children had built the largest balloon ever known for use in an attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean and had served his country as the founder and Chief Aeronaut of the Balloon Corps during the Civil War. Lowe designed and patented\, among dozens of other things\, a portable hydrogen gas generator\, an altimeter for use without a horizon\, a system of aerial signal flags for directing artillery fire on targets not seen by the ground crew\, an artificial ice and refrigeration apparatus\, founded a gas works in Pennsylvania for the illumination and heating of both commercial and residential structures\, and began dabbling in the banking industry. \n \nBefore heading down Bear Canyon we’ll take a snack break at the surprisingly remote\, surprisingly large and well-maintained Bear Canyon Campground. The campground has lots of cleared space\, plenty of metal fire rings\, picnic tables\, and even some metal stoves. Although the camp felt pretty out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere\, it’s really only a bit more than three miles in from Switzer’s and just a little farther from the other side of the mountains in Altadena. From here\, Bear Canyon offers a good chance for solitude\, at least until we approach the Switzers area. There’s also some top-notch swimming holes down here. Nothing has the simultaneous waking-up and calming-down effect like a good splash in ice-cold mountain water. \n \nSwitzer is a relatively easy hike into one of the loveliest sections of the San Gabriel mountains. The hike meanders back and across the stream running down the spectacular Arroyo Seco Canyon. The stream is lined with oaks and alder\, with the water cascading over granite into mirror-like pools. The hike travels high above the 50 foot high Switzer falls\, then drops back to the stream\, where hikers can double back to stand at the base of the falls. The trail is good\, but there are some steep drop offs in a couple spots. It is well shaded. \n \nDirections: From the 210 Freeway\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy (SR 2) and go north. At 9.5 miles\, you will come to the Clear Creek Information Station and the junction with Angeles Forest Highway. Continue straight on SR 2 about ¼ mile and you will see the Switzer’s Picnic Area sign and a large entrance gate on your right. Turn right and drive go past the gate\,the road will go downhill 0.6 miles to the large paved parking area next to the creek. \n \nCarpooling/Caravaning:While I don’t recommend arriving in full cars due to the car shuttle\, solo drivers can consolidate at an area many hikers in this location use just north of the 210 on the 2 fwy. On Angeles Crest Hwy turn right on the second street north of the 210\, Milmada Drive and then take an immediate left on the street that parallels the Angeles Crest. Plan to leave this location at 7:50am \nThese locations do require a National Forest Adventure Pass for parked vehicles. These passes can be purchased at most ranger stations (if open) in the area of our hike\, most sporting goods\, convenience stores and gas stations. The cost is $5/day or $30/yr. When buying an annual pass for $30 you can also buy an additional annual pass for $5. Splitting this fee with someone is the most economical way to get the passes.
