SUMMARY:Sudden Hike ~ Skyline Trail in Honor of Don T.
DESCRIPTION:For those who never had the pleasure of hiking with Don\, I can’t say enough about what a remarkable person he was and what a profound influence he had on so many lives – how much he put into grow the group\, make it uniquely his own and fill our weekends with memorable adventures\, all while making great friends in the process. You can find hiking groups everywhere but Don had a way of finding the best routes\, on and off the beaten path…and always included a personal touch in his write ups. Every year\, we try to do a birthday hike to remember and honor him. \nAny pace welcome to do the Skyline Trail out and back. The plan is to hike up to the Verdugo Motorway at a moderate pace\, take in the views and head back the way we came. There will be a couple points to stop along the way to take short breaks and regroup. It’s pretty straightforward but will mark the trail\, if needed. Bring layers. It gets cold when we stop for a snack break. \nSTATS \nDistance: 6.5 miles \nElevation Gain: 1700 feet. \nRating: Moderate 5/10\, not for beginners. \nTrail: Fire Road\, Non-maintained Fire Road and Single Track w/very little shade. \nDaylight Saving Time doesn’t end until the weekend so bring a headlamp. \nWe will meet at the Skyline trailhead and make our way to the Verdugo Motorway\, maybe go to one of the towers\, and head back the way we came. When returning to the cars\, please keep in mind this is a residential neighborhood. \nDirections: \nIf heading north on the 5 fwy\, take Olive exit to Olive Ave. Head northeast\, towards the mountains\, until you reach the Country Club arch. Drive through. Road becomes Country Club Dr. Follow it until road veers right to S. Via Montana. \nIf heading south on the 5 fwy\, take the Verdugo Ave exit. Make a left. Follow the road as it turns left and becomes Verdugo. Head northeast\, towards the mountains. Make a left on any of the ten streets to Olive Ave where you will turn right. Follow Olive until you reach the Country Club arch. Drive through. Road becomes Country Club Dr. Follow it until road veers right to S. Via Montana. Park on either side of street when the first house on the left comes into view. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Graveyard Canyon EXPLORATORY
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 7-10 miles\, off-trail \nElevation Gain: 1500-3000 feet \nRating: 6/10 ? \nNot for beginners. For intermediate and advanced hikers only. \nThis is a canyon off the East Fork of the San Gabriel River that caught my attention once as I drove by. Based on research online\, it seems to be a wide\, fairly open\, accessible canyon for a few miles\, with a stream running thought it this time of year. At the very top of the canyon is Rattlesnake Peak\, though we won’t be able to make it that far. \nAfter about 3.5 miles\, the canyon becomes much steeper but may still be passable for up to another 1.5 miles. If it looks doable\, those interested can continue on and see how far we can get. \nBe prepared for stream crossings\, some possible bushwhacking\, and possible rock scrambling higher up the canyon. There is NO trail here. \nAlso please watch out for RATTLESNAKES. If you want a scare\, check out this video from Graveyard Canyon\, which is cued up the the relevant time at 16:15: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB_icvz4_oE&t=975s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB_icvz4_oE&t=975s) \nWe’ll meet at the large dirt parking area with restrooms along the East Fork Rd\, exactly 2.5 miles from Highway 39. Because there are restrooms and signage here\, an ADVENTURE PASS parking permit may be required – I’m not sure what the rules are these days. \nNOTE: The listed end time for the event is just a guess. We may finish much earlier\, or possibly later\, depending on what conditions we encounter and how far we decide to go. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. Well behaved dogs are welcome on this one\, but need to be picked up after. \n*** \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. SUMMARY:Laurel Canyon - The Bushwhack is Back
DESCRIPTION:Due to the Sand Fire in 2016 and the Creek Fire the following year\, it was believed that the entire canyon we once spent a couple hours bushwhacking through was no longer dense with California bay laurel\, fallen trees as obstacles and dreaded poison oak. When we finally visited in 2018 we found the entrance completely bare. But as we ventured down\, we found the canyon even more overgrown and dense than before. The 1.3 mile canyon took us 2h 30min to complete. The four bad ass women I was with laughed and smiled the whole way and it is still one of my favorite hikes to this day. Be prepared for another slow decent…..and we might still need a rope 🙂 \nWater crossings could be knee deep and unavoidable so wear shoes you can get wet. \nBring a mask if you decide to carpool from 7-11. \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 8 miles \nElevation gain: 1400 ft \nTrail: Loop\, fire road\, creek crossing and plenty of bushwhacking \nRating: 7/10 \nNOT for beginners \nNo Sweep\, must be able to keep up with the group \nThe Plan \nThis is a hike we’ve done a few times now with some interesting experiences so far. It’s starts out near the Dillon Divide on a rather plain fire road\, the Mendenhall Ridge\, for a bit over 3 miles. Next we head down a little used\, maybe never used\, Laurel Canyon. While only a bit more than a mile this will be the adventurous part of our trek. On a previous visit this 1 mile portion took us almost 2 hours to navigate including one down climb that will require some teamwork and possibly a rope to get through. At the bottom of the canyon we’ll be in Pacoima Canyon which will loop us around and back to our cars. There could be a bit of water in Laurel Canyon and on our previous trip her there was a very shallow creek in Pacoima Canyon. A couple other items of note from previous hike was a plant that seemed to stick to us and thus earned the name “salad hike” and also the power lines above the fire road had some unusual effect on peoples hair. There will be some poison oak as well as a couple of down climbs that will require fellow hiker assistance with one possibly requiring a rope. Also\, I guess the Dutch Louie mine is somewhere down in the canyon that we’ve overlooked on previous visits. We’ll be looking for it this time. See below. \nOh\, and there is NO TRAIL down Laurel Canyon. \nThe Story \nPacoima Canyon drains the northwest corner of the San Gabriel mountains\, flowing west between two substantial ridges before slicing south through precipitous terrain to emerge into the San Fernando Valley. In its gentler upper reaches it is a broad and gradual canyon but with quite precipitous walls created by Mendenhall Ridge on the south and Santa Clara Divide ridge to the north. Both ridges can be accessed using dirt roads called\, unsurprisingly\, the Mendenhall Ridge Road and the Santa Clara Divide Road. These allow access to a series of steep lateral canyons some of which make for good off-trail adventures. In this hike we drop into Laurel Canyon where it crosses Mendenhall Ridge Road and descend into Pacoima Canyon. Laurel is an easy\, north-facing wooded canyon that is mostly brush-free and has just a few down climbing challenges. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/b/5/3/600_433806995.jpeg \nDutch Louie?? or a tired VHC Hiker after descending Laurel Canyon. \nHERMIT DIGS OWN GRAVE \nThen Goes Home to Die\, Leaving Pathetic Note to Coroner. \nLos Angeles Dispatch to New York Sun. \n“Dutch Louie\,” known throughout the Southwest as the hermit of the Pacoima\, a few days ago walked slowly from his hut\, which is 5 miles from Pacoima\, and selecting a spot on the hillside\, dug himself a narrow grave. \nThen he returned to his home\, dressed himself in his best clothing and lay down to die. All that he told in a letter he wrote to the coroner just before he lay down for the last time. \nThe note\, a pitiful chronicle of hope that never died\, asked the coroner to bury him without ceremony in the grave he had dug and to mark it only with a scant inscription\, “Dutch Louie.” \n“I don’t fear death\,” wrote the hermit. “It is the inevitable wages of life — and I have lived. For scores of years I have lived in the hope of finding the bonanza I had dreamed of and prayed for. I never found it\, but I was cheered to the end by the star of hope.” \nThe body was found by hunters. \nDirections \nMeet at 7-11 at 8:30 to carpool\, or at the trailhead at 9. There is limited parking at the trailhead so don’t leave too much space between cars. \nTake the 210 freeway and exit at Osborne. Exit and go north. Take a left at the first light\, Osborne. Make a left on Lexicon Ave for 7-11. It comes up fast so look for it as soon as you are on Osborne. The address for 7-11 is 11348 Sunburst St\, CA 91342. \nFor the actual trail head\, Osborne becomes Little Tujunga Canyon Road. The trail head is just past mile marker 13.01 (the numbers will be decreasing) where you will find gates on both side of the road. Be sure not to block the gates. Also\, this is just down the road from the Wildlife Waystation which is at mile marker 14.92. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. SUMMARY:Eaton Saddle to Switzer Falls -Car Shuttle
DESCRIPTION:The Stats \nWait-listed \nNot for beginners\, no sweeper \nDistance: 10 miles> \nElevation Gain: While mostly downhill\, there will still be at least 1500 ft. of uphill. \nRating: Moderate 7/10\, off trail\, bushwhacking\, poodle dog bush\, poison oak\, creek walking\, etc… \nDuration: 5-7 hours \nRain\, snow – cancels the hike \nThe Plan \nWe will meet at the Switzer Falls lower parking lot\, consolidate vehicles and then head 7:35 am sharp over to Mt.Wilson Road which will get us to the Eaton Saddle. From the Eaton Saddle we’ll hike to the Tom Sloan Saddle with a couple peaks we could check out including Mt. Lowe along the way. Then from the saddle we can head back to our cars at Switzers via Bear Canyon. \nCarpooling-see below for details \nThe Story \nBy the time Thaddeus Sabieski Constantine Lowe retired to Southern California in the late 1880’s he had achieved more than most. The New Hampshire native and father of ten children had built the largest balloon ever known for use in an attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean and had served his country as the founder and Chief Aeronaut of the Balloon Corps during the Civil War. Lowe designed and patented\, among dozens of other things\, a portable hydrogen gas generator\, an altimeter for use without a horizon\, a system of aerial signal flags for directing artillery fire on targets not seen by the ground crew\, an artificial ice and refrigeration apparatus\, founded a gas works in Pennsylvania for the illumination and heating of both commercial and residential structures\, and began dabbling in the banking industry. \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/e/9/8/event_91608792.jpeg \nBefore heading down Bear Canyon we’ll take a snack break at the surprisingly remote\, surprisingly large and well-maintained Bear Canyon Campground. The campground has lots of cleared space\, plenty of metal fire rings\, picnic tables\, and even some metal stoves. Although the camp felt pretty out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere\, it’s really only a bit more than three miles in from Switzer’s and just a little farther from the other side of the mountains in Altadena. From here\, Bear Canyon offers a good chance for solitude\, at least until we approach the Switzers area. There’s also some top-notch swimming holes down here. Nothing has the simultaneous waking-up and calming-down effect like a good splash in ice-cold mountain water. \nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/9/f/d/600_457419421.jpeg \nSwitzer is a relatively easy hike into one of the loveliest sections of the San Gabriel mountains. The hike meanders back and across the stream running down the spectacular Arroyo Seco Canyon. The stream is lined with oaks and alder\, with the water cascading over granite into mirror-like pools. The hike travels high above the 50 foot high Switzer falls\, then drops back to the stream\, where hikers can double back to stand at the base of the falls. The trail is good\, but there are some steep drop offs in a couple spots. It is well shaded. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/f/a/600_447538362.jpeg \nDirections: From the 210 Freeway\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy (SR 2) and go north. At 9.5 miles\, you will come to the Clear Creek Information Station and the junction with Angeles Forest Highway. Continue straight on SR 2 about ¼ mile and you will see the Switzer’s Picnic Area sign and a large entrance gate on your right. Turn right and drive go past the gate\,the road will go downhill 0.6 miles to the large paved parking area next to the creek. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/a/1/d/600_457419453.jpeg \nCarpooling/Caravaning:While I don’t recommend arriving in full cars due to the car shuttle\, solo drivers can consolidate at an area many hikers in this location use just north of the 210 on the 2 fwy. On Angeles Crest Hwy turn right on the second street north of the 210\, Milmada Drive and then take an immediate left on the street that parallels the Angeles Crest. Plan accordingly \nThese locations do require a National Forest Adventure Pass for parked vehicles. These passes can be purchased at most ranger stations (if open) in the area of our hike\, most sporting goods\, convenience stores and gas stations. The cost is $5/day or $30/yr. When buying an annual pass for $30 you can also buy an additional annual pass for $5. Splitting this fee with someone is the most economical way to get the passes. A National Parks Pass can also be used for parking as well and should have come with a rear view mirror hanger. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. POODLE DOG ALERT: This area will have the dreaded poodle dog bush which to some can have an effect worse than poison oak. Once identified it should be easily avoidable. \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). SUMMARY:Salkantay Trek High Elevation Conditioning Hike (Mt. Baldy from Manker Flats).
DESCRIPTION:This hike serves as a conditioning hike for people who are doing the Salkantay Trek a couple of weeks later. Those doing the trek are encouraged to do this hike to avoid having any problem when trekking the Andean mountains of Peru. But those not doing the trek are also welcome to join us. \nThe plan is to meet at the trailhead before 6:30 a.m. and begin the hike at 7:00 a.m. \nStats: \nDistance: 9 miles \nElevation Gain: ~4\,000 ft. \nMax elevation : 10\,064 ft. \nRating: 8/10 Strenuous \nPace: Sauntering. Slow pace to get high elevation exposure as long as possible. \nTrail: Looped some pavement\, fire roads\, but mostly single track and rocky trails \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks \nHiking Poles (Optional) \nLayered clothing (possibly windy & chilly at the summit) \nMoney for ski lift (optional) and grub from The Notch \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=91759&searchType=WEATHER) \nNOTE: \nThis is considered a high altitude hike and high altitude sickness\, AKA acute mountain sickness\, is a possibility. Good Physical health is important. The San Antonio Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl Trail is considered the most direct route to the summit of Mount Baldy (10\,064′). This climb is considered strenuous. \nAs you start up the fire road you will soon enjoy views of the San Antonio Falls. Continuing on you will pick-up a use trail that climbs northwest along San Antonio Canyon through Jeffrey and Lodgepole Pines eventually reaching the San Antonio Ski Hut. From here you stand at the base of the Baldy Bowl with its dramatic ridgeline which ascends as much as 1600 feet over the Ski Hut. Most people will then cross the bowl and follow the switchbacks up through the trees. Once you reach the top of the bowl continue on up to the summit where you will enjoy fine views of the San Gabriel Mountains including Mount Baden-Powell\, Iron Mountain\, Pine Mountain\, Dawson Peak\, Ontario Peak\, and many others. Looking south you will look down on the San Gabriel Valley and on exceptional days the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. \nMount San Antonio\, also known as Old Baldy or Mount Baldy\, at 10\,068 ft\, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains\, and the highest point in Los Angeles County. The peak\, which marks a boundary between San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County is called Baldy because of the absence of trees around the summit. Mt. Baldy is visible from much of Southern California and much of Southern California can be seen from it’s summit on a clear day. It is one of the most photographed objects of the Southern California landscape It’s snow covered peak has appeared on post cards and tourist literature for many years. There are four popular routes to the summit. All are considered moderate hikes of 8.5 to 13 miles round trip and anywhere from 3\,600 feet to 6\,000 feet of elevation gain. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \n******************************************************************* \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). SUMMARY:Bear Divide to Placerita Car Shuttle
DESCRIPTION:Arrive at the Placerita Nature Center and be prepared to depart at 8:30 am sharp for a shuttle to the Bear Divide Trailhead. \nThe trail immediately heads uphill and continues to do so for 2.2 miles. This is about the only elevation gain of the hike. Much of this is through a lovely shaded woodland. We emerge out of this forested area to the top of a ridge where Fire Camp #9 is. This camp was originally built for military use during the cold war. It now houses the people who fight the wildfires for us. We can take a short break and regroup at the water tank. From the camp you can look north and see the Canyon Country part of Valencia or look south and see the northeast part of the San Fernando valley. There are restrooms at the camp. \nFrom Camp #9 we head west along a fire road until we reach Wilson Saddle which many of you are familiar with. VHC has gone to this point several times. We will stop here for a longer break and snack/brunch. \nThe descent back to Walker Ranch will be from Wilson Saddle along Los Pinetos trail. From here we’ll head back to the cars at the nature center. \nSTATS \nDistance: ~ 9.5 miles \nGain: 1300 ft \nRating: 5/10\, no sweep \nTrail: single track\, some fire toad \nParking pass: NO \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. Parking is free. Map above is accurate. We will leave some cars here where we will end our hike. Car shuttle to start at Bear Divide Trailhead. \n**************************\n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. SUMMARY:Strawberry Scramble Loop via Colby Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Scramble lovers only. We’re taking the mountaineers route with about a mile of exposed climbing on the rocks. Limiting to those I’m comfortable climbing with since it will be a full hike and a long day. \nSTATS \nDistance: ~12 miles \nElevation: >3200 \nLevel: 8/10 \nDuration: 6+ hours\, bring snacks and/or lunch \nNOT FOR BEGINNERS! \nNO SWEEP!! \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/5/d/9/600_448438841.jpeg \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/d/9/7/600_456640343.jpeg \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/d/9/e/600_456640350.jpeg \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/d/b/4/600_456640372.jpeg \nThe Plan \nWe’ll head up to Strawberry Peak through the scenic Colby Canyon and up the mountaineers route. This is an exposed scramble and not recommended for those not comfortable with this type of terrain. From the peak\, we’ll head down to the Strawberry Peak Trail and loop back around to Colby Canyon. The truck trail is overgrown in spots\, with yucca obstacle courses and also a few poodle dog fields. Other than a couple spots with easily navigate able washouts it’s in pretty good shape though. There will be some short and steep rocky portions throughout the day. Mt Lawlor will also be an option if we the time and inclination. \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Story \nStrawberry Peak – 6164 ft. \nStrawberry Peak is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California. Just a short drive up Angeles Crest Highway (SR2) from the city of La Cañada. Being so close to the Los Angeles metropolitan area and offering such outstanding hiking opportunities\, Strawberry is understandably very popular. The summit offers wonderful views of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean (although often obscured by smog). And to the north the High Desert and Tehachapi mountains are visible. \nNamed by “some wags at Switzer’s Camp”\, according to Hiram Reid (1886). It is told that they fancied a resemblance to a strawberry standing with its blossom end up. “We named it Strawberry because there weren’t any strawberries on it.” Reid icily noted that “the joke took” and that burlesque name has been commonly used by the old settlers; but the peak name is waiting some worthy occasion for a worthy name . Like many other playful peak names\, few expected the name would last\, but it has-perhaps because Americans have always loved to toy with place names. \nThe first known ascents were by parties led by Ezekiel Simmer from Switzer’s. A trail was built along the Arroyo\, and then up Colby Canyon to the saddle west of the summit\, and then up the Class 3 rock to the top. This was one of the most popular destinations during the first “Great Hiking Era” (1895-1935). It was also climbed and poetically recorded by Saunders (1923). One of this peak’s most curious moments was when a giant gas balloon\, the America crashed on the summit after being caught in a storm. The six men aboard\, including Captain. A. E. Medlin\, spent a freezing night on the mountain but clamored down Colby Canyon to safety the next morning (1909). It was front page news and some sought to rename the peak after Medlin but nothing came of it. \nCalled “Strawberry Peak #1” on original HPS List–there once was a #2 in the San Bernardino N.F. \nDirections: From the 210 Freeway north of Pasadena\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy (SR 2). Just past the Switzer Falls parking\, you’ll see a turn out on the left at mile marker 34.50. You can park here. If parking is full\, there are a coupe other turnouts if you keep driving up the road. \nCarpooling/Caravaning: A good area to consolidate vehicles is at an area many hikers use just north of the 210 on the 2 fwy. On Angeles Crest Hwy turn right on the second street north of the 210\, Milmada Drive and then take an immediate left on the street that parallels the Angeles Crest. I will leave this location at 7:45. \n**************************\n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Scramble Loop to Camelback from Haines Canyon
DESCRIPTION:I like finding hikes close to home that aren’t always on other people’s radar. This is the best description of the hike to “Mount Camelback” I’ve found: \nOfficially\, as far as I’ve seen on any map\, there is no such place. The Sunland US Topo map does not list this mountain. Really it’s more part of a ridge than a peak but from certain angles\, it does look like the back of a camel due to its pronounced humps. It has been known by this name by the locals for many decades. Camelback can be aproached most directly from the Haines Debris Basin\, though it is far from a quaint afternoon hike in the hills. \nTHE PLAN \nTHERE IS A VERY STEEP SCRAMBLE RIDGE. Please read the write up and stats before signing up. \nWe will start at Haines Cyn and follow a trail along the foothills that will allow us a bit of a warm up before the fun begins. Three miles in\, we will meet up with the Kill ‘Em Quick trail. Here we will gain over 1000’ of elevation in just one mile. There are about 30 switchbacks that will lead us to a ridge. Be prepared for rock scrambling. The plan is to connect to Camelback – a point we reached last year that has amazing views of the valley and surrounding areas. This is where we’ll take our lunch break before heading down a couple miles of steep trail back to our cars. \nThere will be a couple places to stop\, catch our breath\, take in the views and regroup. \nImportant notes: \nEXPLORATORY \nBUSHWHACKING \nBRING POLES \nMORE WATER THAN YOU THINK YOU’LL NEED \nEXTRA TIME TO FIND PARKING – SEE FARZAN RULE \nVERY\, VERY STEEP \nSTATS \nDistance: 8 Miles \nElevation Gain: 2500 ft \nDuration: 5 hours \nTrail: Fire road and single track\, w/areas of deteriorating trails and steep\, uneven downhills\, possible bushwhacking \nRating: 7/10\, due to trail condition and gain \nParking pass: Not needed \nNot for beginners – no sweep!! We’ll be keeping a moderate pace and regrouping as needed. \nTHE STORY \nA couple of local residents made some cool videos of their crazy adventures. One of them was an exploration of an abandoned detention center and the trail the juvenile detainees maintained as part of their training program: \n“The Kill ‘Em Quick Trail was built by juvenile offenders detained at nearby Camp Routh\, a LA County probation department fire camp\, abandoned in 2009. Camp Routh had a program that trained some of the detainees to fight forest fires. As part of the training requirements\, these detainees had to make it up the ridge in under 30 mins wearing their forest fire gear\, some carrying chainsaws. \n“In one of the abandoned buildings\, there’s an old whiteboard with the Kill ‘Em Quick climber rankings\, a competitive list of times between detainees\, staff and the fire department.” One of the probation officers set the record with a time of just 15 minutes. \nA couple quotes that will let you know what you’re in for: “Is this even a trail?” “This trail won’t last if people don’t use it.” “This trail is gnarly.” Sounds like a VHC hike to me. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom the 210 fwy take the Lowell Ave exit to Honolulu Ave. Go west. It veers right and turns into Tujunga Cyn Blvd. In just over a mile and a half turn right on Haines Cyn Ave. Make a right on Day St and a left to join Haines Cyn again. Though we will be meeting at the very end of Haines\, there isn’t much parking there so grab any available parking spot you see when you’re on Haines or turn left on Apperson St to look for a spot. \nWe will meet at the gate at the end of Haines. Please keep in mind this is a residential neighborhood – keep any noise to a minimum. \n*** Allow yourself a few extra minutes to find parking and walk to the trailhead. \n**************************\n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Jackson Lake Loop (Courtesy of Paul Taylor)
DESCRIPTION:This is a beautiful loop hike through the pines just north of the Angeles Crest Hwy\, East of Vincent Gap\, and West of the Big Pines Hwy Junction. The hike begins at the Jackson Lake picnic area and quickly ascends as it heads southwesterly towards the PCT\, then east paralleling the old paved Grassy Hollow bypass to the Jackson Flat campground. It then continues easterly to cross Big Pines Hwy and down the very beautiful Cedar Canyon\, site of old campground getaways and a few stone cabins. Then up out of the canyon and back to Jackson Lake. \nThe Numbers:\nDistance: 11.2 mi\nElevation Gain: 2238 ft\nRating: 6-7/10\nTrail: Single track with some fire road.\nParking: Park in the Jackson Lake parking area. ADVENTURE PASS IS REQUIRED. PLEASE CARPOOL!!! \n*** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \n*** \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 8+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \n*** \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). SUMMARY:Dragon's Back Scramble to Cathedral\, Arlington and La Cumbre
DESCRIPTION:Scramble lovers only! This one has been on my list for a while. Full disclosure – I have not done this route before. There are different options on the scramble up so we will look for the one that best suits the group. Limiting to those I’m comfortable climbing with since it will be a long day on the rocks. There will be almost 2000′ of gain in the second mile so be sure to read the write up to know what you’re signing up for. \nNOT FOR BEGINNERS! \nNO SWEEP!! \nSTATS \nDistance: ~9 miles \nElevation: >3400 \nLevel: 9/10 \nTrail: SCRAMBLING!! Single track\, bushwhacking\, route finding \nDuration: 7+ hours\, bring snacks and/or lunch \nParking pass/fee: NO \nCome prepared!! Bring: \nPLENTY OF WATER – bring more than you think you’ll need \nELECTROLYTES \nSNACKS/LUNCH \nSUN PROTECTION – this is an exposed ridge \nGLOVES \nPOLES \nTHE PLAN \nThis is known as one of the toughest hikes around but worth the spectacular views. It is an exposed scramble and not recommended for those not comfortable with this type of terrain. Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Electrolytes are also a good idea. Gloves\, poles and long sleeves/pants may also be helpful. \nWe’ll follow the paved road through the lower part of Mission Canyon. It will wind through chaparral and over boulders. Once we reach a small rock outcropping\, we’ll have a view of Seven Falls – something to look forward to on another day. The trail heads steeply up the ridge through interesting sandstone formations to the summit of Arlington Peak. From here\, our next peak is visible. We’ll take a use trail off the north side of Arlington along a ridge to reach Cathedral Peak. There will be class 3 scrambling but this area should have good handholds. Lunch break will likely be somewhere along the way. \nThe trail to La Cumbre Peak is overgrown and may be difficult to follow. From the summit of Cathedral\, we will drop down across rocky ledges towards the saddle between Cathedral and La Cumbre. We’ll look for another use trail to take to the summit of La Cumbre where we’ll take a short break and regroup before heading back down. \nDirections: From downtown Santa Barbara\, take State St to Mission Blvd and turn right. Follow Mission Blvd to the Santa Barbara Mission. Drive up Mission Canyon Rd and turn right. After several hundred yards\, near the fire station\, turn left. Continue up Mission Canyon. At the fork in the road\, take the left fork up Tunnel Rd and continue several miles to the end. Parking is available on the right side of the road. \nCarpool/Caravan: please post a comment or arrange a private carpool\, if you’d like. Park and rides along the 101 fwy are options for meeting locations. I will likely be coming from the Goleta area so won’t be available to meet but you can message me if you need help arranging a ride. \n**************************\n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. DESCRIPTION:STATS: 11.4 miles with 2800’ elevation gain/loss. Total time expected to be about 5 hours. \nPACE: Slow to Moderate to Fast – go your own pace. I hike at an intermediate pace\, but will wait for slower hikers at various trail junctions\, if needed. The Sam Merrill Trail switchbacks up the east wall of Las Flores Canyon about 2.5 miles to the intersection of the Echo Mountain Trail – the beginning of the loop – where we will turn left and follow the old rail bed of the Mount Lowe Railway to the former site of “Ye Alpine Tavern” for a brief stop and restroom break. From there we will follow the fire road to the pavilion at Inspiration Point where we can enjoy the view while having a snack break. \nFrom Inspiration Point we will back-track a short distance to the Middle Sam Merrill Trail and head about 2 miles down to Echo Mountain\, then continue back down the Lower Sam Merrill trail to the Cobb Estate at the top of Lake Avenue where we started. \nDIRECTIONS: Take the 210 Freeway towards Pasadena\, take the Lake Avenue exit\, go North until Lake ends and meets with Loma Alta Drive. SUMMARY:Mt. Baldy via the Ski-Hut Trail - Return via the Notch
DESCRIPTION:Hike to the summit via the Ski Hut trail and descend via the Backbone trail to the Notch and then via the service road back down to Manker Flats or take the lift\, your choice \nBring snacks for the summit and trail. \nAdvanced Intermediate Hikers. You should have Mt. Baldy Summit experience via the Backbone Trail beforehand. \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/f/2/4/600_449604356.jpeg \nStats: \nDistance: 11 miles \nElevation Gain: ~4\,000 ft. \nMax elevation : 10\,064 ft. \nRating: 7/10 Strenuous \nTrail: Looped some pavement\, fire roads\, but mostly single track and rocky trails \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks \nHiking Poles (Recommended) \nLayered clothing (can be windy & chilly at the summit) \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=91759&searchType=WEATHER) \nNOTE: \nThis is considered a high altitude hike and high altitude sickness\, AKA acute mountain sickness\, is a possibility. Good Physical health is important. The San Antonio Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl Trail is considered the most direct route to the summit of Mount Baldy (10\,064′). This climb is considered strenuous. \nAs you approach the Manker Flat parking area you will be on a 4 lane road with a wide center divider. Parking is on both sides and in the divider. After you pass the Manker Flats campground on the right\, look for Angeles Falls Road. There is access through the divider at this point\, so you can turn left and park hopefully closer to the trail head. There is a gate across Angeles Falls road and porta potties. This is the trail head. The road up to Baldy is VERY curvy with VERY tight turns. Anybody who does not like twisty roads with dropoffs should be a passenger! \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. SUMMARY:Full Moon Hike to the Wishing Tree in the Verdugos with Bonus Full Lunar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:We haven’t done a full moon hike in a while and this is a good trail to do if you are a regular hiker but haven’t tried a night hike before. Turns out there’s a lot going on tonight: \nMay’s full Moon is the first supermoon of the year! A supermoon is most commonly defined as any full Moon that occurs when the Moon is at at least 90% of perigee (the point in the Moon’s orbit where it is closest to Earth). \nThis month’s full Moon coincides with a **total lunar eclipse**! \nThis eclipse begins on the night of Sunday\, May 15 \n* **Penumbral Eclipse Begins:** The Moon enters the outer edge of Earth’s shadow (called the “penumbra”) on May 15 at 6:31 P.M. PDT.\n* **Partial Eclipse Begins:** The Moon enters the darkest part of Earth’s shadow (the ”umbra”) at 7:27 P.M. PDT.\n* **Total Eclipse Begins:** Totality begins at 8:28 P.M PDT.\n* **MAXIMUM ECLIPSE:** The eclipse reaches its peak (called the “maximum”) at 9:11 P.M. PDT. This is the best time to view the total lunar eclipse! \nMay’s Moon names tend to speak to the arrival of spring and all that it entails! May’s Flower Moon name should be no surprise. The Cree names **Budding Moon** and **Leaf Budding Moon** celebrate the awakening of local flora\, which really begin to leaf out now in many areas. Similarly\, **Planting Moon** (Dakota\, Lakota) marks the time when seeds should be started for the farming season ahead. The activities of animals marked spring’s arrival\, too\, which is highlighted by the Cree names **Egg Laying Moon** and **Frog Moon**\, as well as the Oglala term **Moon of the Shedding Ponies**. All three names indicate that warmer weather is on the way! \nSunset is at 7:49 pm. Moonrise is at 7:41 pm. \nBring a flashlight and read the parking instructions below. \nTHE PLAN \nIt’s fun finding new trails and routes around the Verdugos. The Chandler Fire Road will take us winding in the hills above Burbank to the Wishing Tree. We’ll be mostly on fireroads on the way out to make it easy to navigate but the way in will include some single track and steep firebreaks. Once we arrive at our destination\, we will stop for a snack break and watch the setting sun. Bring warm layers since it tends to get windy here. Feel free to bring your own food. Drinks for yourself or to share are optional. No potluck this time around. \nThis trailhead is in a residential neighborhood so please be mindful of noise. \nSTATS (est.) \nDistance: 7 miles-ish \nElevation Gain: <2000 ft. \nRating: 5/10\, not for beginners \nTrail: Single Track\, Firebreak\, Fireroad\, Out and Back\, Very Steep Uphill Sections \nDirections: From the 5 fwy\, exit at Hollywood Way. Go north and make an immediate left on Glenoaks Blvd. You'll want the right lane because you'll make another immediate turn to go right on Hollywood Way. Follow it until it curves left into Lanark St. Make a right on Edmore Pl and find parking where it meets Olivia Terrace. Meet at the forest gate on your right. Olivia Terrace dead ends so\, if you go too far\, turn around and find parking around the bend. \n**************************\n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. SUMMARY:Fryman Canyon to Mulholland
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of the year again-early bird hikes! We will do the route we did last time. Sachika is the event host and it will be at her pace!\nNot for beginners. \nWrite up is Don’s \nTHE STATS \nDistance: 8> miles \nElevation Gain: 1600 cumulative \nRating: 5/10 \nTrail\, out & back on fire roads\, single track & streets \nWe will check out “The Rain Forest” and take a swing (if it’s there)! \nWe’ll be meeting on nearby side streets thus avoiding the usual parking fees. \nDog friendly! \nLocated in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains off of Laurel Canyon Boulevard\, 128-acre Wilacre park provides access to the Betty B. Dearing trail\, and the Cross Mountain Park trail system to Fryman Canyon Park\, Coldwater Canyon Park\, and Franklin Canyon Park. A large parking lot\, restrooms\, drinking fountains and a picnic area as well as its easy accessibility by car or MTA bus make Wilacre Park a popular destination for hikers and dog walkers\, especially on weekends. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, exit Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Travel south one mile and turn right onto Laurel Terrace Dr. The address above is a private residence and I’m only using it for the purpose of identifying our meeting place. Do not go to this house! There should be ample side street parking in the area and we’ll meet at Laurel Terrace Dr and the beginning of Viewcrest Rd. \n*** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Dawn Mine-From Chaney Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Stats \nDistance: 7> a guess \nRating: 7 a guess \nElevation gain: a guess) \nTrail: Looped single track \nPace: Not for beginners -will be at my pace \nThe Plan \nOur route starts at Chaney Trail trailhead and follows the fire road and Sunset Ridge Trail up to Dawn Station\, then descends to the mine\, after a break we will follow the canyon out -this is a loop \nDawn Mine has been closed 🙁 – (the actual mine) \nThe Story \nOver its 50-plus years\, Dawn Mine produced more stories than gold. Enough gold was recovered to keep various over-optimistic operators looking for the bonanza that never came. Some unknown prospectors discovered gold in Millard Canyon in 1895 and small claims were staked and worked for 7 years with marginal results. Minor Bradford Peck named the mine for Dawn Ehrenfeld\, little daughter of a friend from the Randsburg Mines. Michael Ryan bought the Dawn Mine in 1902. He bore tunnels into the canyon’s rock walls and was successful for several years. He built a narrow trail up the steep slope to the Mt. Lowe Railway. Two mules\, Jack and Jill\, carried the ore to Dawn Station to be transferred to railcars and taken down to the valley for milling. After Ryan’s death in 1929\, the mines set idle for several years. In 1933 Ryan’s widow leased the holdings to Hunger\, Comstock\, and Hilton\, who bored a new\, 1\,200-foot tunnel and built a small mill. They had good success at first\, but in spite of considerable more digging\, the gold petered out. In a few more years the venture was closed down. In the 1940s and early 1950s\, other miners gave it a try but with no positive results. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/2/a/600_462060298.jpeg \nDirections: Exit the 210 fwy in Pasadena at Fair Oaks and go north to Loma Alta Dr. Turn left here and then turn right on Chaney Trail (flashing yellow light overhead). Take Chaney Trail to the top\, you’ll see a gate to your right. continuing down the road past where the gate is will take you down to parking for Millard Campground\, we are not meeting down there. \nThe gate to Chaney opens at 6 am so be here on time\, the parking spaces at Chaney is very limited. \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:91001.1.99999) \n*** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer.
