SUMMARY:Boney Peak (Tri Peak Optional)
DESCRIPTION:Stats: \nDistance: 9-10 miles\, 5-7 hours \nElevation Gain: 2700 ft. \nRating: Moderate 8/10 \nNot for beginners\, no sweeper! \nTrail: Looped\, will be on mostly rocky and regular trails with a very short stretch of pavement. WARNING: There will be some short stretches of steep uphill climbs where some might feel more comfortable on their hands and knees. Consider bringing gloves. \n \nThis loop hike will take us along some nearby beautiful and isolated trails in the Boney Mountain State Wilderness Area of Point Mugu State Park to the spectacular rock formations of Tripeaks and then just a quarter mile further to the Boney Overlook. After lunch at Boney \, we’ll head back down via the Upper Cabin Trail after pausing briefly at Boney\, past the old cabin site (Danielson Memorial) and back to the cars. \n \nThe Western Ridge trail gets quite a bit of use but is not officially maintained so it is very narrow in places. Overall it is quite steep\, climbing 1200 feet in 1.2 miles\, and it has some short and very steep sections. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants are strongly recommended to help protect against scratches from the chaparral. A few scratches\, however\, are worth the outstanding views we’ll have to the west and south. The trail back isn’t quite as steep\, but it is loose and rutted in many places and therefore presents other slip and fall hazards. \nTripeaks: A jumble of sandstone formations with huge boulders\, caves and a nifty crevice to traverse. We could spend hours exploring just this little area\, but we’ll only have enough time to look at a few main features \n \nBoney: Commands sweeping views of Ventura County\, Westlake\, Malibu\, Point Mugu State Park and the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day the Channel Islands are visible to the west. Despite its modest elevation\, Boney Peak rises dramatically from Sycamore Canyon near Camarillo. Much of its north and western face is marked by a 1\,500 foot precipice lined with jagged formations and rocky crags. \nBring lunch. \nDirections: From the Los Angeles area take the 101 freeway north to Newbury Park in Ventura County. Exit at Wendy Drive. Turn left onto Wendy and continue to Lynn Road. Turn right onto Lynn and continue to Via Goleta. Turn left onto Via Goleta (see 1st pic) and continue to the end \n4126 1/2 W. Potrero Rd\, Newbury Park CA 91320 is for Satwiwa Culture Center for accurate directions \n \n****************************************** \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). SUMMARY:The Mt. Lukens Loop
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 9.5 MilesElevation Gain: 2800 ft.Trail: Single track\, fire road\, uneven downhills.Rating: 8/10\, due to trail conditionPace: Intermediate to advanced \nNot for beginners-there won’t be a sweeper!! \nThe Plan StoryNot many small- or medium-sized cities can boast three mountain ranges within its border\, but Glendale does. Stretching east and north from the San Fernando Valley\, the city takes in substantial parts of the San Rafael Hills and the Verdugo Mountains\, plus a small slice of the San Gabriel Mountains at the city’s northern extremity. \nAt this northernmost spot in Glendale\, overlooking the foothill communities of La Crescenta and Tujunga\, lies Deukmejian Wilderness Park\, named after the former California Governor George Deukmejian. The park’s 700 acres of chaparral-covered slopes are drained by two ravines with steep gradients: Cooks Canyon and Dunsmore Canyon. During the mid-20th Century\, the area alongside the Dunsmore Canyon stream was used by the Le Mesnager family as a vineyard\, An old stone barn at the trailhead is reminiscent of that time. \nMt. Lukens is the tallest peak within the Los Angeles city limits\, and it has spectacular views of the Los Angeles basin and surrounding mountains from the summit. \nThis trip makes a loop from Deukmejian Wilderness Park in Glendale\, ascending via the Crescenta View Trail to the Haines Canyon Motorway to Mount Lukens. Our return route will continue on the Haines Canyon Motorway to the Rim of the Valley Trail\, returning to Deukmejian Wilderness Park via Cook’s Canyon a nicely shaded area with a small creek. The views on both legs of the hike are great. If visibility is good\, expect to see Catalina Island\, Santa Barbara Island\, the entire Santa Monica range\, and more. \nThe downhill portion of the Rim of the Valley trail in particular has some areas of loose rocks and soil as well as a few Yucca maize portions. Walking sticks could be helpful to some in these areas. \n \nDogs: Welcome on this one as long as they have good trail manners and are picked up after. \nDirections: From the 210 Freeway exit Pennsylvania Ave (17A) and go north to Foothill Blvd. Turn left on Foothill Blvd. and go to New York Ave. Turn right on New York Ave. and go to the end\, Markridge Rd. Turn left on Markridge and go about 200 yards to the park entrance on your right. Follow the entry road up to the parking area. Parking is free and there are restrooms and a water fountain near the trail head. \nNo Carpooling recommended for the time being********************************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. SUMMARY:Tree of Life - La Tuna Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:The old trail to the Tree of Life is still in great condition\, hope you can join hike up to the tree. This is NOT for beginners. \nSTATS \nDistance: <8> \nElevation Gain: <2000 \nNot for beginners! \nTrail: Steep uphill section (about 2 miles)\, single track\, fire road \nTHE PLAN \nWe will meet at the parking lot just off the 210 fwy at 8:15 am (There is a plant nursery right across the street\, Southland Nursery). Located on the north slope of the Verdugo Mountains\, 1\,100-acre Tuna Canyon Park provides trail access into the steep upper reaches of the mountains. Here we’ll consolidate vehicles and head a little further down La Tuna to the Grotto Trailhead where we’ll start our hike. We then head up to the Verdugo Mtwy. After our snack break at the Tree of Life we will go back to our cars down the fire road. \nBring layers \nDirections: Exit on La Tuna Canyon Rd\, off the 210 FwyGPS: 7415 La Tuna Canyon Rd (google indicates city of Sun Valley) this is the nursery off the fwy and across from the parking where we are meeting. \n******************************************************************************************************************************************************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. SUMMARY:Corral\, Puerco Cyn & Lunch at Malibu Seafood
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a (hopefully) sunny December day hike by the beach – or just come for lunch at Malibu Seafood around 1:30 – BYOB! \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 8 miles \nElevation Gain: 2000 ft. \nRating: 6/10 \nTrail: Single Track\, Fire Road\, rock scrambling and some overgrown Billie Goat trails \nDuration: 4-6 hours \nThe Plan \nWe’ll start on the Corral Canyon Trail and quickly head over to Puerco Canyon where we’ll be exploring some abandoned buildings along the way as we head uphill in the direction of the Backbone Trail. We’ll eventually come to a point overlooking Pepperdine University. It’s at this point we’ll be going on some lessor used and overgrown trails. Anyone able to bring garden clippers and help clean up the trail a bit would be great. Once we get back to a trail we’ll be looping around back to another portion of the Puerco Motorway. Eventually we will head back to the Coral Canyon trails completing our loop. \nDirections: Malibu Seafood is located on Pacific Coast Hwy about 1.8 miles west of Malibu Canyon Rd. The map in the link above is accurate. Free parking is located along PCH\, pay parking is located at the Coral Canyon Trail Head parking lot just east of the Malibu Seafood parking lot. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:New Year's Day Hike and BBQ at Corriganville
DESCRIPTION:New Year\, New Hike – We’ve never done this route out of Corriganville to the not so secret swing cave so the stats are a guess. If you can’t join us for the main event\, feel free to walk around the ranch (approx 1-1.5 mi) and join us for a post hike BBQ. It’s mostly flat and has some interesting history. A New Year’s Day hike has become a bit of a tradition – catching up with old friends and meeting new ones is always a great way to start the year. \nTHE STATS \nDistance: 6-7 miles\, not for beginners \nElevation Gain: >1\,500 ft \nRating: Moderate 5/10 \nTrail: single track\, slightly overgrown\, optional scrambling \nBRING \nThere are plenty of picnic tables to spread out on but might want to bring something soft or warm to sit on \nA snack for the trail and something to eat or throw on the BBQ when we return to the ranch for lunch \nReusable serviceware and cup to reduce the impact on the environment \nChoice of beverage – sharing optional \n10 essentials and whatever else makes you comfortable – a JACKET is highly recommended \nTHE PLAN \nWe’ll start our adventure at Corriganville Park and head immediately uphill to the tunnel under the freeway. Once we connect with the Hummingbird Trail\, we’ll make our way to the Swing Cave for some play time and a snack break. A bit more uphill will take us to the Rocky Peak Fireroad then back down the Hummingbird Trail to the cars. We’ll get the grills started for anything you’d like to eat. No potluck this time but feel free to share a beverage with the group. \nTHE STORY \nI had a few paragraphs on the history of Corriganville but it didn’t save so you can look up some interesting stories here (no one reads this far down anyway 😆): \nhttps://www.conejovalleyguide.com/welcome/the-corriganville-movie-ranch-site-in-simi-valley-is-a-ventura-county-historical-landmark#:~:text=In%201949%2C%20the%20ranch%20opened\,rock%20walls%20of%20the%20barn. \nhttps://www.rsrpd.org/simi_valley/historical_landmarks/history_of_corriganville_park.php \nhttps://obscurehollywood.net/corriganville.html \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom the valley\, take the 118 and exit Keuhner. Drive south and turn left on Smith Rd. Go through the gate into the parking lot and park as close to the end as possible. We’ll meet by the last gate at the end of the lot. You can also exit at Rocky Peak. Go south to Santa Susana Pass Rd. Make a right and follow it as it winds around to Keuhner. Make a right onto Smith Rd. \n**************************************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. SUMMARY:Eaton Saddle to Switzer Falls -Car Shuttle
DESCRIPTION:The Stats \nNot for beginners \nDistance: 10 miles> \nElevation Gain: While mostly downhill\, there will still be at least 1500 ft. of uphill. \nRating: Moderate 7/10\, off trail\, bushwhacking\, poodle dog bush\, poison oak\, creek walking\, etc… \nDuration: 5-7 hours \nNO SWEEPER!! wait-listed \nRain\, snow – cancels the hike \nThe Plan \nWe will meet at the Switzer Falls lower parking lot\, consolidate vehicles and then head 8:30 am sharp over to Mt.Wilson Road which will get us to the Eaton Saddle. From the Eaton Saddle we’ll hike to the Tom Sloan Saddle with a couple peaks we could check out including Mt. Lowe along the way. Then from the saddle we can head back to our cars at Switzers via Bear Canyon. \nCarpooling \nSee below for details \n \nThe Story \nBy the time Thaddeus Sabieski Constantine Lowe retired to Southern California in the late 1880’s he had achieved more than most. The New Hampshire native and father of ten children had built the largest balloon ever known for use in an attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean and had served his country as the founder and Chief Aeronaut of the Balloon Corps during the Civil War. Lowe designed and patented\, among dozens of other things\, a portable hydrogen gas generator\, an altimeter for use without a horizon\, a system of aerial signal flags for directing artillery fire on targets not seen by the ground crew\, an artificial ice and refrigeration apparatus\, founded a gas works in Pennsylvania for the illumination and heating of both commercial and residential structures\, and began dabbling in the banking industry. \n \nBefore heading down Bear Canyon we’ll take a snack break at the surprisingly remote\, surprisingly large and well-maintained Bear Canyon Campground. The campground has lots of cleared space\, plenty of metal fire rings\, picnic tables\, and even some metal stoves. Although the camp felt pretty out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere\, it’s really only a bit more than three miles in from Switzer’s and just a little farther from the other side of the mountains in Altadena. From here\, Bear Canyon offers a good chance for solitude\, at least until we approach the Switzers area. There’s also some top-notch swimming holes down here. Nothing has the simultaneous waking-up and calming-down effect like a good splash in ice-cold mountain water. \n \nSwitzer is a relatively easy hike into one of the loveliest sections of the San Gabriel mountains. The hike meanders back and across the stream running down the spectacular Arroyo Seco Canyon. The stream is lined with oaks and alder\, with the water cascading over granite into mirror-like pools. The hike travels high above the 50 foot high Switzer falls\, then drops back to the stream\, where hikers can double back to stand at the base of the falls. The trail is good\, but there are some steep drop offs in a couple spots. It is well shaded. \n \nDirections: From the 210 Freeway\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy (SR 2) and go north. At 9.5 miles\, you will come to the Clear Creek Information Station and the junction with Angeles Forest Highway. Continue straight on SR 2 about ¼ mile and you will see the Switzer’s Picnic Area sign and a large entrance gate on your right. Turn right and drive go past the gate\,the road will go downhill 0.6 miles to the large paved parking area next to the creek. \n \nCarpooling/Caravaning:While I don’t recommend arriving in full cars due to the car shuttle\, solo drivers can consolidate at an area many hikers in this location use just north of the 210 on the 2 fwy. On Angeles Crest Hwy turn right on the second street north of the 210\, Milmada Drive and then take an immediate left on the street that parallels the Angeles Crest. Plan to leave this location at 7:50am \nThese locations do require a National Forest Adventure Pass for parked vehicles. These passes can be purchased at most ranger stations (if open) in the area of our hike\, most sporting goods\, convenience stores and gas stations. The cost is $5/day or $30/yr. When buying an annual pass for $30 you can also buy an additional annual pass for $5. Splitting this fee with someone is the most economical way to get the passes. A National Parks Pass can also be used for parking as well and should have come with a rear view mirror hanger. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. POODLE DOG ALERT: This area will have the dreaded poodle dog bush which to some can have an effect worse than poison oak. Once identified it should be easily avoidable. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:The Grand Canyon (not that one)
DESCRIPTION:Not for beginners-limited number of hikers. Rain cancels hike. \nImportant: Parking is limited and carpooling will help. Also\, the parking area fills up early so please arrive on time. This location does require a National Forest Adventure Pass for parked vehicles. \n \nThe Stats \nDistance: <12 miles round trip \nRating: 8/10 \nElevation gain: 2500 ft. \nTrail: Lollipop route\, single track\, asphalt\, fire roads and no trail in the GC. \nDuration: 6-7 hours \n \nThe Plan \nBelow the slopes of Mount Lowe\, the “Grand Canyon” is modest by the standards of the San Gabriels and certainly bears no resemblance to the famous ditch of the same name. The uphill leg of this adventure follows the path visitors once took on the Mount Lowe RR to get to the Alpine Tavern where our entry into the Grand Canyon begins. The off-trail hike down the length of the Grand involves the descent of several steep but short earthen slopes (most safely accomplished by sliding on one’s rear end)\, but is otherwise a quite straightforward off-trail hike. It involves a pleasant wooded canyon where there are several human artifacts of interest. At its terminus the Grand discharges into Millard Canyon where we’ll pick up a trail back up to the Sunset Ridge trail and our cars. \n \nThe Story \nThe portion of the Mt. Lowe Railway beyond Echo Mountain was the Alpine Division\, which took visitors up to the Alpine Tavern for food and accommodations. The Alpine Division\, according to the Pacific Electric Railway’s Employee’s Timetable\, was 3.57 miles in length\, and her longest stretch of straight track just 225’. Yet another highlight on the Alpine Division was Circular Bridge\, about the halfway point to Alpine Tavern from Echo Mountain. This engineering fete was the brainchild of engineer David Macpherson\, where the track completes a full circle and doubles back on itself at a higher level. Those that remember riding on this route in its heyday say this was the scariest part of the ride. Cars would periodically stop for souvenir shots. Upon arriving at Crystal Springs and Alpine Tavern\, the terminus of the Alpine Division\, one could have a bite to eat and stay the night. Other amusements in the area included hiking or horseback riding to the summit of Mount Lowe\, billiards\, miniature golf\, tennis\, viewing the silver fox farm\, hiking up to Inspiration Point\, riding the famous One Man and a Mule Railway\, or just mingling with the visitors around the great fireplace. \n \n \nMt. Lowe Preservation Society (http://www.mountlowe.org/) \nThaddeus Lowe (http://www.thaddeuslowe.name/) \nDirections:To the Chaney Trail Gate: Exit the 210 fwy in Pasadena at Fair Oaks and go north to Loma Alta Dr. Turn left here and then turn right on Chaney Trail (flashing yellow light overhead). Take Chaney Trail to the top\, you’ll see a gate to your right. Park here\, but do not block the gate. continuing down the road past where the gate is will take you down to parking for Millard Campground. We are not meeting down there. \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:91001.1.99999) \n******************************************************************* \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. SUMMARY:Camp Idle Hour Via Echo Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Waitlisted-limited -Prioritizing to those who I have hiked with this trail before then I will add if I know you can complete the hike at groups pace (my pace) safely. \nThe StatsDistance: 14Rating: 8/10Elevation Gain: 4000Trail: Mostly trail\, with some fire road. \nNOT FOR BEGINNERS AND NO SWEEPERIntermediate and advanced hikers only \nCovid Vaccinated only due to shuttle \nThe Plan \nWe did this route for the frst time in early 2012 and it’s very worthy of spot in the permanent VHC rotation. I thought we can avoid the heat or warm weather if starting from Echo. The area near Idlehour reminds me of Big Santa Anita Canyon and we won’t have to worry about parking. We start at Echo Mountain trailhead on Lake Street\, go up to Echo\, then the Sam Merrill trail to Inspiration Point. From here we’ll pick up the Idlehour Trail which will eventually get us over to Henninger Flats. Bring Lunch!! \nThe Story \nWe start the day at the Cobb Estate which belonged to a wealthy lumber magnate\, and had several gold mines and water wells on its property before the buildings were completely razed in 1959. One year later\, the Marx Brothers bought the land and wanted to turn the area into a cemetery. Luckily\, students from the aptly named John Muir High School bought the land and donated it to the Forest Service. Now the land houses several miles of equestrian trails\, a small botanical garden\, and the entrance to the Echo Mountain Trail. \nThe entire history of Echo Mountain is much to lengthy to publish here. The Echo Mountain House was finished in November of 1894. This grand Victorian 70-room hotel\, perched 3\,000 feet above the valley equaled the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. It featured three wings\, a north and an east which were the main quartering wings\, and a center wing\, the dining room\, which reached back towards Castle Canyon and Echo Canyon\, for which the mountain takes its name. Its stairway lead directly up from the Incline landing. As many of us know who have been to Echo and those who will make this trek for their first time will find out the foundation of this building is still in place as well as portions of the stairway seen above. Inspiration Point (4714′) is one of five officially-named Inspiration Points in Los Angeles County alone! Interestingly\, this is one of those cases where the place in common usage differs from the place officially named by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. Most people think of Inspiration Point as the ~4540′ saddle just east of the official Inspiration Point. The official Board\, for good reasons\, probably couldn’t bring themselves to name a saddle (http://tchester.org/sgm/site/definitions.html) as a point. Inspiration Point and the area have a rich history. The storied Pacific Electric Railway built an open-air shelter there in 1924-1925\, with locating tubes showing the location of points of interest ranging from nearby sites to Catalina Island. The locating tubes are pieces of pipe that are oriented so that the view through the pipe is centered on the point of interest. \n \nLofty ridges\, dramatic canyons and a trail camp cradled in the peaceful woods are a few of the many attractions visited by Idlehour Trail\, which offers the hiker a grand tour of the Front Range of the San Gabriel Mountains. Naturalist John Muir called this country “rigidly inaccessible” after an 1877 exploration of Eaton Canyon. To get through the thorny chaparral\, Muir was compelled to creep for miles on all fours. Later a trail was built\, but it was no walk in the park. Early hikers stepped gingerly up and down Eaton Canyon via a narrow trail across the wall of the gorge high above the canyon bottom. These days\, the well-engineered Mt. Wilson Toll Road offers hikers a safe way around the precipitous lower canyon\, while the fine Idlehour Trail traverses the canyon’s more mellow upper reaches. Camp Idle Hour\, a resort from 1915 to 1929\, was a favorite of hikers who loved its location in the shade of oak\, bay and spruce. These days Idlehour Trail Camp\, about midpoint of this ramble\, invites hikers to idle away an hour or so in the same tranquil setting that pleased an earlier generation. \n \nThe Henninger Flats area was originally purchased by Mr. Peter Stiel through the Federal Homestead Act. Mr. Stiel kept the ownership until he sold it to his friend William K. Henninger in August of 1893. Henninger had been squatting on the area since 1884. Upon his death in March of 1894\, the property was willed to his daughters\, Louisa Francisco and Susan Griljava. The property was then sold in February 1895\, by auction\, to Harry C. and Harriet M. Allen of Pasadena. Selling price was $2\,600. In October 1895\, the Allens sold the property for $5\,000 to four men (W. Morgan\, J. Vandevort\, J. Holmes and W. Staats). These four men then sold the property in December 1895 to the Mt. Wilson Toll Road Company for $76\,600. Although various people used or leased the area\, the Mt. Wilson Toll Road Company stayed with the owners until it was purchased by Los Angeles County in 1928. In 1945\, additional acreage was acquired from the Federal government by a land swap deal. This last deal brought the total acreage to approximately 232 acres as compared to the original 120 acres. \nDirections: This is a car shuttle so we will meet at Pinecrest Drive and Crescent in Altadena\, consolidate cars and then drive to the trailhead. \nTake the 210 fwy towards Altadena/Pasadena area. Exit on North Altadena Drive and go north for about three miles and turn right on Crescent Drive until the street intersects with Pinecrest Drive. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. SUMMARY:Condor Peak Exploratory Scramble
DESCRIPTION:Trying a new route and avoiding a car shuttle this time around. Limiting the number of attendees since it’s exploratory and going to be a long day/hike. \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 16 miles \nElevation Gain: >4000 \nRating : 9/10\, for the experienced only – not for beginner or slow hikers \nTrail: Uneven rocky terrain and single track\, bushwhacking and some creek crossing\, scrambling and a bit of fire road. VERY steep uphill. \nThe Plan \nWe will meet at the trailhead for Trail Canyon Falls to start our hike. NO car shuttle this time around. The trail follows Gold Creek and goes by some rustic cabins from the 1920’s\, it continues along the creek heading up this amazingly deep canyon. At about 1.5 miles from the beginning we’ll get our first view of the falls. Our first break will be at the 2 mile mark at the base of the waterfall. We’ll stop for some pictures then venture on above the falls. This is where a large portion of our gain comes in – 3000 feet in less than 3 miles and will include scrambling on rocks. Once we reach Condor\, we will have a lunch break and head back down the regular trail back towards the falls. There will likely be a small portion of bushwhacking and trail finding as we did have some difficulty locating an actual trail the last time we did this. \nThe Story \nCondor Peak (elev. 5540) stands high above Big Tujunga Canyon\, across from Mount Lukens\, and west of Josephine Peak. On a clear day it commands superb views of the western San Gabriel Mountains. If you come in the spring when the Ceanothus is in bloom\, you will be treated to a show of beautiful lilac-colored flowers. \nThe peak is named after the endangered California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus). A hundred years ago it was a nesting ground for the “monarchs of the air”\, and they could be seen wheeling gracefully overhead in search of something dead to eat. Sadly\, the condor’s numbers have declined dramatically. The last condor sighting in the area was before World War II. \nDirections: \nLeave any valuables at home and take all important items (keys\, phone\, wallet\, etc.) on the hike with you. Don’t leave anything of any importance in your car. \n210 West exit at Sunland Blvd. (#11) and turn right (N) towards Sunland – Tujunga \n210 East exit at Sunland Blvd (#11) and turn left (N) towards Sunland – Tujunga \nTake Sunland Blvd which becomes Foothill Blvd. about .8 miles to Oro Vista Ave and turn left. There’s a Jack In The Box and 7-11 on the left and a Shell station on the right at Oro Vista Ave. Stay on Oro Vista Ave and it curves to the right and becomes Big Tujunga Canyon Road which will take you to the trailhead. The turnout\, NF 3n-29\, is easy to spot\, but not marked very well. It’s about 4.7 miles in from the curve at the end of Oro Vista Ave. It’s just before mile marker 2.05. If you pass Ottie Road you went too far. Park on Big Tujunga or in the turnout but be sure to read the parking signs and don’t block the gate. \nFor those GPS people out there these coordinates are for where NF 3n-29 meets Big Tujunga: N34 18.224 W118 15.490. \nThis location does not require a National Forest Adventure Pass. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. SUMMARY:Cienega Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 11.4 miles \nElevation Gain: 2000 \nRating: 7/10 \nNot for beginners! No sweeper \nFor intermediate and advanced hikers only \nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/8/0/600_70743712.jpeg \nDon’s \nTrail: a bit of asphalt and then single track trail; out and back and a loop. \nMore about this route: From the parking area we head down an asphalt road which takes us to the first canyon. In this first canyon there is a trail in some portions and not so much in other parts. There will be a few spots of some minor boulder hopping and very short climbs. If there is any water it should be avoidable. At the end of this canyon is where we’ll encounter either overgrown trails or no trail at all as we start our ascent to the loop trail. This section is less than an 1/8 of a mile and brings us to the middle portion of the route. This area does not get much use which can make the trail overgrown and difficult to find in some areas. In this area we’ll also have a rather continuous climb as we head over to Piano Box. There will be a couple spots with unavoidable water\, but not very deep. This area is also like a roller coaster with ups and downs\, nothing crazy steep for long distances\, but yes there are steep spots. We’ll also get some great views to the north and Redrock Mountain and stop and look at some wind caves. This middle portion will drop us down into an area known as Piano Box which is also the entrance to Fish Canyon Narrows. The trail down to Piano Box is deteriorated in very short sections and will require extra care when traversing. We will take an elongated break here and hopefully there will be some water flowing so we can cool off a bit before returning the final few miles to the cars. \nIn summary: This is a great hike with many different aspects contained in one route and a great sense of accomplishment when complete. This is NOT a regular trail hike where you can return to your car if you get tired like at Griffith Park. Depending on the weather you can never have too much water on this hike. \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/1/a/8/600_70752712.jpeg \nThe area: Here\, amid the arid-looking mountains north of Castaic Lake\, Castaic Creek flows the better part of the year through a sinuous gorge flanked by picturesque sandstone outcrops. The creek is perfect for wading – shallow\, slow-moving\, and warmed by the sun. Fish Canyon Narrows: In the trenchlike confines of middle Fish Canyon\, aridity and moisture stand side by side\, separated by a matter of a few yards. Mountain mahogany\, manzanita and other drought-resistant shrubs cling to the walls\, while a shallow stream gurgles merrily past a line of oaks\, sycamores\, willows\, and cottonwoods. It is almost as if a little slice of the Pacific Northwest was transplanted to Southern California. \nThis is a dog friendly hike! \nPARKING PASS REQUIRED As with all National Forest Land a parking pass is required and can be purchased at Sport Chalet\, Big 5 and other places. $5/day or $30/yr. You could get a ticket here. \nDirections: Head north of the San Fernando Valley on the 5 freeway and go about 6 miles north of Lake Hughes/Castaic exiting at Templin Hwy. Go right to the end of Templin Hwy (about 4 miles) At the end of Templin HWY you will see a gate and a road going to a LADWP facility to your right. Park at this gate. The map above works\, but you do need to continue on the the end om Templin as described above. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Well behaved dogs are welcome on this one\, but need to be picked up after. \n************************************* \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. SUMMARY:Orienteering @ Santa Fe Dam w/LAOC
DESCRIPTION:Ready to give orienteering a shot? This location is mostly flat and very beginner friendly. The terrain is described as “Flat flood basin with subtle features and highly variable vegetation thickness.” \nCome up with a team name\, pick a course\, register and the race is on… Post a comment if you’d like to be matched with a group. GIVE IT A TRY – IT’S FUN! \nMeet at Starbucks or drive directly to the dam ($12 parking fee). \nCOVID Mitigation \nTo protect the safety of our volunteers and participants\, the following protocols will be in place at this event: \nAttendance by Pre-registration ONLY. No day of event registration. Sign up here:\nLAOC Website https://www.laorienteering.org/events-1/santa-fe-dam-2022 \nPrepayment encouraged. This will enable non-contact pick-up of materials. \nAssigned start times to ensure that large crowds do not gather \nA “Mask Required” zone will be instituted around the registration area to insure that those approaching volunteers are masked. \nThe recommended course is orange… or yellow. Courses: White (Basic)\, Yellow (Intermediate)\, Orange (Advanced)\, Brown (Expert)\, Green (Expert)\, Red (Expert). \nThis write up is Don’s: \nOrienteering is an organized sport for individuals\, navigating a course by hiking to find your way through the trees and fields. Map reading\, navigation and route choice are the key. Orienteering is a sport for everyone\, regardless of age or experience. At advanced levels it is very competitive. Others\, while learning\, often go in small groups . It is done at your pace\, whether you run or walk it . The satisfaction is in finding your own way. Sample ‘O’ maps will show you more about Orienteering than any words. We will be meeting for breakfast prior to heading over to the orienteering site in order to further explain and answer any additional questions about this event. \n10:00 am Course Opens \nAll who attended previous events have enjoyed them so doing this again was a no-brainer. There are numerous levels of courses made available to all participants. Each course gets longer and offers more control points to locate along the way. In a nutshell\, each team will receive an electronic e-chip which fits on your finger and will be assigned to one team member and is used to record the start\, finding of all control points and finish\, ultimately providing that teams statistics and time to complete the course. The starts are staggered and you won’t receive the actual map until your team starts the course. If you have a compass feel free to bring it or they will have them available there for a small rental fee. Everything else will be provided on-site. The map provided will identify the location of up to 14 “control points”. Your team will try and locate all the control points in the correct order by orienting the map with your surrounding terrain. There is a sample orienteering map in the files section of our site. \nSTATS: \nDistance: 3-5+ miles\, depends upon your route finding abilities \nElevation Gain: unknown \nRating: 2-4/10\, fun\, fun\, fun. \nFees: \n$5 member youth\n$8 member adult (age 21+)\n$10 non-member youth\n$13 non-member adult\nOne Child\, 10 years and younger\, is FREE per paying adult. \nEquipment rental fees:\n$2 E-stick rental (mandatory for each entry unless you have your own\, or the event is Urban O)\n$2 compass rental (based on availability) \n$40 charge for a lost estick \nLAOC is a non-profit organization. Fees collected are used for permits\, insurance\, additional supplies\, labor\, and mapping to provide more orienteering opportunities! \nIMPORTANT INFORMATION\, PLEASE READ: \nAt Registration: Each individual or group going on a course needs to have an EP finger stick (also called an SI card\, e-card\, chip\, dibber\, etc.). Be sure your name\, course\, and e-punch number are entered so the organizers can determine who’s on a given course (and check that everyone returns safely). \nAt the Start Area: Request a start time from the Start official. Then\, while you’re waiting for your start time\, be sure to clear and check your finger stick before going out on your course. The CLEAR unit deletes any old data on the card that may cause confusing results\, and the CHECK unit confirms that the card has been cleared and is ready to be used. It takes about 6 seconds to clear the card\, and less than one second for a check. When you are told to start\, or when your start time has arrived\, be sure to punch the START unit before heading out on your course. This writes your start time to your finger stick. \nOn the Course: Visit each control in the proper order (if it’s a point-to-point course). Be sure to check that the control code on the unit matches the control code on your course. Insert your finger stick at each control unit\, and wait until you hear a beep and see a flash on the unit. It usually takes about a second. If there is no beep or flash\, the unit may be malfunctioning; if so\, punch the edge of your map with the pin punch attached to the control flag to prove that you visited the control.\nIf you punch a wrong control by mistake\, or punch controls out of order\, it does not matter as long as you eventually punch all of the controls in the proper order. Thus\, for example\, if you find and punch control #4 before control #3\, it is okay as long as you then find #3 and punch it\, and then revisit #4 and re-punch it before continuing on to #5. Also\, it does not cause any problems if you happen to punch a control that is not on your course. \nRemember to punch the final control on your course–that is\, the last control before the Finish\, often called the “Go” control. It is sometimes very close to the Finish\, and may be easy to overlook. \nAt the Finish: Punch the FINISH unit at the Finish line. This writes the finish time on your finger stick. \nAfter the Finish: Then go directly to the EP table and download your results. To do that\, place your finger stick in the download unit until it beeps (which can take several seconds). You will be told if you completed the course correctly and what your time was. You will receive a printout of your splits. You may keep your map and the splits printout. \nKeep In Mind…\nBe sure to check in at the EP table whether or not you finish your course\, or if you decide not to go out on a course after you have entered your name in the competitor list. If you do not check in\, you will be listed as a missing runner\, and we will have to initiate a search for you. \nDIRECTIONS\nWe will meet at Starbucks right down the street at 9 am for a caffeine fix and to develop some strategies and answer questions. We can also consolidate cars here to split the parking fee at the dam. Address: 15700 Arrow Hwy\, Irwindale 91706 \nThe actual orienteering is at Santa Fe Dam – look for orange and white O-signs. \nFrom the north (210 fwy)\, using 605 S\, exit Arrow Hwy. Go east (left). From the south (10\, 60\, etc)\, using 605 N\, get off at Live Oak Ave\, go east (right) and join onto Arrow Hwy. Continue on Arrow Hwy to Park Entrance on left opposite Azusa Canyon Rd and pay entrance fee of $12. To go to Starbucks\, just continue for a couple of blocks to the corner of Arrow and 4th St. It will be on the right. \n******************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member). \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. SUMMARY:ZUMA Creek
DESCRIPTION:Don’s crazy routes are what VHC is known for. This was one of his favorites and he usually posted it this time of year around his birthday. I can’t think of a better way to remember and honor him than by finally doing the whole route again. Now that we have some water\, be prepared to get more than just your feet wet! Rock scrambling water lovers only 🙂 \nCar shuttle so be sure to arrive on time. \nWe’re honoring Don and the trails he loved by doing the hikes that he sought out and did so much research on to give everyone such a unique experience. It’s for these experiences that we followed Don\, no questions asked. These aren’t the typical ordinary paths that everyone else follows. These are signature Don T. hikes. They’re off the beaten path\, exploratory\, no name\, forgotten trails that few have dared to seek. Some of these trails are more traveled than others but they all have a touch of Don’s adventurous spirit that remains. We can’t ever replace Don but can remember him and his sense of adventure by following his footsteps\, just like we always did. This write-up is his: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 5.3 miles \nElevation Gain: 1400 feet \nLevel: 9 out of 10\, scenery factor: priceless \nThe Trail: Single track\, rock & boulder hopping\, scrambling\, trailblazing and some bushwhacking. PO avoidance. \nTime: 5-7 hours (How can only 5 miles take so long? You’ll find out.) \n \nThe Plan \nDon’t let the mileage fool ya this is a beautiful\, very RUGGED and STRENUOUS hike through Lower Zuma Canyon\, Upper Zuma Canyon\, and Newton Canyon. There is poison oak everywhere in this canyon so you’ll be determining how sensitive you are to it if you don’t already know. I’d definitely recommend a thorough post hike scrubbing with one of the many PO products on the market. This is a car shuttle (one-way) hike where we start the hike near PCH and end up about 4 miles north of PCH on Kanan Dume Rd. It involves some BUSHWHACKING and mostly CLIMBING OVER BOULDERS. Good balance and rock climbing skills are helpful. Also\, depending on water flow\, you can count on getting your feet wet. \nThe hike begins around open fields\, sycamore trees and laurel sumac bushes. The canyon then narrows and there are oaks and eucalyptus trees along a creek. A good portion of the hike is BOULDERING and some CLIMBING over huge sandstone boulders along Zuma Creek. We’ll stop for a lunch about about 2/3 of the way into our route where Edison Rd intersects Zuma creek. While the trail up to this point will have been a bit of a challenge this is really where the fun starts. Towards the end of the hike\, there’s a steep hill to climb (possibly crawl) up. \nTHIS HIKE TAKES A LOT OF ENERGY!!! (mostly due to climbing up and around the boulders). \nCheck the Weather (http://www.weather.com/weather/today/Malibu+CA+90265?lswe=90265&from=searchbox_localwx) \nBring Lunch. \nRain does not cancel. \n \nThe Area \nMy recommended Poison Oak remedy. Apply “Ivy Off” before the hike. Have a damp wash cloth with pre applied grease cutting dish soap on it in a zip lock. Wash exposed areas at the last water crossing before climbing out of the canyon. Shower with cold water and more dish soap ASAP. \nDirections \nWe’ll meet at the Backbone Trail Trail Head parking on Kanan Dume. \nFrom PCH: go north on Kanan Dume Rd. Kanan Dume is west of Pepperdine\, west of Latigo Canyon Rd\, and east of Trancas Canyon Rd. Go about 4.1 miles. It will be on the left just after the first tunnel. \nFrom the 101 (Ventura Freeway): go south on Kanan Dume Rd. Pass Mulholland and Latigo Canyon Rd. On Kanan you’ll go through two tunnels. The trail head will be on the right just before the third tunnel. \nFrom here we will drive to PCH\, turn right and take another right on Bansall Dr. Take Bansall to the end to start the hike. \n******************************************************* \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. SUMMARY:Sudden Hike ~ Skyline Trail in Honor of Don T.
DESCRIPTION:For those who never had the pleasure of hiking with Don\, I can’t say enough about what a remarkable person he was and what a profound influence he had on so many lives – how much he put into grow the group\, make it uniquely his own and fill our weekends with memorable adventures\, all while making great friends in the process. You can find hiking groups everywhere but Don had a way of finding the best routes\, on and off the beaten path…and always included a personal touch in his write ups. Every year\, we try to do a birthday hike to remember and honor him. \nAny pace welcome to do the Skyline Trail out and back. The plan is to hike up to the Verdugo Motorway at a moderate pace\, take in the views and head back the way we came. There will be a couple points to stop along the way to take short breaks and regroup. It’s pretty straightforward but will mark the trail\, if needed. Bring layers. It gets cold when we stop for a snack break. \nSTATS \nDistance: 6.5 miles \nElevation Gain: 1700 feet. \nRating: Moderate 5/10\, not for beginners. \nTrail: Fire Road\, Non-maintained Fire Road and Single Track w/very little shade. \nDaylight Saving Time doesn’t end until the weekend so bring a headlamp. \nWe will meet at the Skyline trailhead and make our way to the Verdugo Motorway\, maybe go to one of the towers\, and head back the way we came. When returning to the cars\, please keep in mind this is a residential neighborhood. \nDirections: \nIf heading north on the 5 fwy\, take Olive exit to Olive Ave. Head northeast\, towards the mountains\, until you reach the Country Club arch. Drive through. Road becomes Country Club Dr. Follow it until road veers right to S. Via Montana. \nIf heading south on the 5 fwy\, take the Verdugo Ave exit. Make a left. Follow the road as it turns left and becomes Verdugo. Head northeast\, towards the mountains. Make a left on any of the ten streets to Olive Ave where you will turn right. Follow Olive until you reach the Country Club arch. Drive through. Road becomes Country Club Dr. Follow it until road veers right to S. Via Montana. Park on either side of street when the first house on the left comes into view. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. A great hike will have all of these!
