SUMMARY:Sunday hike
DESCRIPTION:The Keyhole 7 memorial bench was installed in April 2016 as a tribute to our friends we lost in Zion in September 2015. It survived the fire that swept through the area in May earlier this year. Let’s pay it a visit in remembrance of those we lost. \nWe will be taking the Garapito Trail to Eagle Rock and come back via the fire road but you could come either way if you know the area. We’ll be taking a break at Eagle Rock so bring snacks or lunch. \nSTATS \nDistance: 9 miles \nRating: 5/10 \nElevation gain: 1750 \nDon’s write up \nEagle Rock\, located in Topanga SP\, is the primary attraction of this hike. It juts impressively out from the hillside\, with dramatic shear cliffs on three sides. There is easy access to the top of Eagle Rock from the trail. The usual route to Eagle Rock is via Topanga SP\, but that would be too short for our group as we’re a bit more adventurous. This hike starts from the Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park at the south end of Reseda Blvd. This will be a combination of trails and fire roads. We start off with .05 miles of fire roads and then take the Bent Arrow Trail to the Garapito Trail the remaining 3 miles to Eagle Rock where we’ll take a short break before returning on fire roads to our cars on Reseda. The Garapito Trail is where we get our bonus ab workout due to the necessity to avoid so many low branches. As usual bring ample supplies of liquid refreshment\, snacks\, sunscreen and dress accordingly depending on the weather conditions. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed in state parks. \nDirections: Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park is located on the southern end of Reseda Blvd. in Tarzana\, 3.2 miles south of the Ventura Fwy. The park and parking are at the end of Reseda Blvd. There is a white line across the road to mark where the fee parking starts and an “Iron Ranger” to pay the fee. Park before the line for free. Be aware as there is a “photo-enforced” stop sign in the area. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. SUMMARY:Sudden-Cross Town Trail to Teepee
DESCRIPTION:Hiking to the teepee in honor of our Keyhole friends. Join me if you can\, I know its sudden and weather is still warm but hoping it will be cooler at 6:30pm. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the sunset and look at the city lights. \nThere are sections of the trail that are very steep and slippery so poles would be helpful. Bring a headlamp as well. I will mark the trail for those who can’t make the start time or who want to go up at their own pace. This is a residential neighborhood so please be mindful of noise. \nStats \nDistance: <4 Miles \nElevation Gain: ~1300 ft. \nDuration: 3+ hours \nTrail: Fire road and single track\, some areas are very steep and slippery. \nRating: 5-6/10 \nWrite-up is Don’s: \nThe Story \nBoth the ascent and descent are fire roads/breaks or single uneven trails. The views are enjoyable at night. There are also a few interesting landmarks up there\, such as a TeePee. \nDirections: \nFrom the 210 Freeway exit Angeles Crest Hwy (2) North as if you were going to Mt. Wilson. Shortly after the first curve will be Harter Lane. Turn Left here and go as far as you can on Harter. \n*********************************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. SUMMARY:Mission Peak from Neon Way Conditioning Hike
DESCRIPTION:Description:The hike ascends to Mission Point\, aka Mission Peak\, via the Mario A DeCampos Trail. The peak is the second highest summit in the Santa Susana mountain range behind Oat Mountain. This trail meanders up a beautiful ridge through walnut and oak groves and open grassland\, providing broad views of the San Fernando Valley and its surrounding mountains. Just before reaching Mission Peak the trail takes a series of switchbacks\, which Don T calls the “Stacked Rock Switchbacks” and pass the trees locally known as “Three Trees.” This is an out and back hike and while there are a few more steep areas most of the elevation gain is spread throughout the hike. The trail is a nice fire road with no steep drop offs. It can be windy at times or at certain areas of the trail. During late afternoon hikes\, the hills cast a shadow on the trail. So\, no need to wear a headgear or put on sunscreen for the hike. \nDuration: 2 hours \nPace will be slow \nFor Safety:Carry water. Wear proper footwear\, bring snacks\, sunscreen\, a hat and be aware of weather conditions. Dogs must be friendly\, leashed and picked up after. Bring water for your dog! Know your limits and if you’re having problems or decide not to finish a hike please let someone know. Be alert for ticks\, rattlesnakes\, hyrax\, skink and poison oak.The purpose of this meetup is to have a regular place where people can unwind and safely hike in the company of friends after work. Considering that the start time is at 7:00 p.m.\, the tailend of the hike will be past dusk. So\, bring a headlamp to avoid any mishap while we go down the trail. \nDirections:From the 405 Fwy get on the 118 Fwy going west and exit Balboa Blvd and turn right going north\, 2 miles to Sesnon Blvd. turn left 1 mile to Neon Way\, turn right\, it will dead end into a cul-de-sac. From the Santa Clarita area you can exit the 5 Fwy at Balboa and turn right on Sesnon following the above directions from there. \nThis location IS NOT in O’Melveny Park which you will pass heading to our meeting spot. This is a residential neighborhood so please be courteous when parking. There’s not a lot of parking on the cul-de-sac\, but plenty in the area so leave yourselves a little bit of time to get to our meeting spot. \nMapquest (private residence) (http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Granada+Hills&state=CA&address=12863+Neon+Way) \n******************************************************************* \nThe Fine Print \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. SUMMARY:Clouds Rest via Tenaya Lake (Valencia Hiking Crew)
DESCRIPTION:Advanced Intermediate Hikers. You should be able: (1) to comfortably hike from an elevation of 8\,100 ft. and summit at 10\,000 ft.\, and (2) handle heights. \nPlan: To sleep in the car the day before the hike. The trailhead is inside the Yosemite NP. Toll is required to enter the park. \nDistance: About 15 miles round tripTrailhead Elevation: 8\,150 feet (2\,450 meters)Clouds Rest Elevation: 9\,926 feet (3\,025 meters)Elevation Gain: 1\,775 feet (540 meters) \nDifficulty: Strenuous\, but not in the Half Dome category (speaking of strenuous\, bring binoculars and you can watch hikers making their way up the Half Dome cables from here). An 8 out of 10. The most difficult part\, unless you’re afraid of heights\, will be a thousand-foot-gaining series of switchbacks about a mile and a half into the hike. \nScenery Summary: This hike is all about the destination\, from which you’ll have striking views in every direction\, including\, perhaps most gripping of all\, straight down. Turn a complete circle and you’ll be able to see any number of Yosemite landmarks\, including Tenaya Lake\, Half Dome\, Mt. Hoffman\, Sentinel Dome\, North Dome\, and bits of Cathedral Rocks and El Capitan\, plus Merced Lake and dozens of peaks you probably won’t be able to name. \nParking: A lot at the trailhead holds a dozen or so cars. It will be full. Look for spots along the shoulders of the road; you shouldn’t have to wander too far to find an opening. One temptingly empty area just across the road from the parking lot is signed as a no-parking zone just to see if you’re paying attention. \nhttps://www.google.com/maps/@37.8258536\,-119.470636\,3a\,75y\,105.79h\,86.78t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sI4VezhIVXq603ghI5kOmTw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en \nNearest Bathrooms: Pit toilet at the trailhead. You can find bathrooms with plumbing at the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center\, 5 miles (8 km) east. \nAcrophobics Beware: The top of Clouds Rest is a narrow ridge with a long\, sheer dropoff on the north side (the side you can see from the Tioga Road). The dropoff to the south is less extreme\, but it wouldn’t require special talent to wind up just as thoroughly and symmetrically dead by falling off that side. It’s best to visit Clouds Rest sober and during dry weather. \nThat said\, the route over the ridge is more manageable and less dangerous than Half Dome’s cable route. If you’re slow and careful\, you shouldn’t feel like you’re a freak gust of wind or a momentary lapse of concentration away from the bottom of Tenaya Canyon. And the very top of the peak opens up again to around fifty feet wide\, which will feel like the Great Plains after the underpants-imperiling knife edge you’ve just crossed to get there. \n******************************************************************* \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Remembering Friends\, Hike and Brunch
DESCRIPTION:We thought it would be nice to get together for an early morning hike with brunch after to remember our beloved friends we lost 6 years ago. \nOption 1 6am: Hike the 9 miles Los Pinetos loop \nOption 2 8am: 3.5 miles Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch \nOption 3 ~ 10am: brunch – no potluck – bring your own food \nLength: 9 or 3.5 mile options \nElevation Gain: 2000 ft/250ft \nRating: 7/10 or 2/10 \nTrail: single track\, fire road\, fire break \nThe Plan: \nThe first two miles takes you from the Placerita Nature Center parking lot to the Los Pinetos Trailhead via the Canyon trail with only a 250 foot elevation gain. Mile 3 of our trek is the HARDEST with an elevation gain of 700 feet. The 4th mile takes us just about to the top\, but only has an elevation gain of a bit more than 400 feet. Mile 4 is my favorite part because it’s somewhat forest like with most of the trail covered by trees with the only drawback being there can be an abundance of gnats in this area for some reason. After a brief sidetrip to catch a view of the valley and a bit more uphill at the top we will take a brief break at the Wilson Canyon Saddle where there is a bathroom. Next we will take the Firebreak Ridge Trail and finally the Manzanita Mountain Trail back to the Nature Center. The Firebreak Ridge Trail was\, as the name implies\, a fire break and has some very steep areas. \nMeet at the picnic tables across the bridge \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. Parking is free and the map above is accurate. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. SUMMARY:Revised Placerita Hike and Picnic Remembering Keyhole 7
DESCRIPTION:We thought it would be nice to get together for a morning hike with brunch after to remember our beloved friends we lost 6 years ago. Los Pinetos is closed but we can still take the Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch and come back to brunch. If you can’t make the Saturday hike\, hopefully we’ll see you for this one. \nOPTION 1 9am: 3.5 miles Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch \nWe will pass many native plants\, some of which I can now identify and share\, thanks to Helen on our last trip in the area. \nOPTION 2 ~ 10:30am: brunch – no potluck – bring your own food \nPlacerita Web Site (http://www.placerita.org/index.html) \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. Parking is free and the map above is accurate. \n9 am Option 1: \nSTATS \nLength: 3.5 miles \nElevation Gain: 300 ft. \nRating: 2/10 \nTrail: single track\, Creek bed. \nDuration: 2 hours \nWrite up is Don’s: \nTHE PLAN \nThe hike takes you from the Placerita Nature Center parking lot to Walker Ranch via the Canyon trail with only 250 foot elevation gain. \nOutside the Nature Center in Placerita Canyon you will spot a large sign labeled “Main Trailhead\,” pointing you in the direction of a half dozen park trails. Walk past the sign and across Placerita Creek to the start of Canyon Trail on the south bank. Turn left and begin hiking up this level path alongside the creek. \nThe trail primarily sticks with the south side of the creek\, following the canyon east up a gradual grade to Walker Ranch. If you are in the mood to linger beneath the sycamores\, there are three benches along Canyon Trail where you can stop and relax. There are also posts every half-mile to let you know where you stand between Walker Ranch and the Nature Center. \nThree-quarters of a mile from the start\, you will pass through a dramatic kink in the canyon where the canyon walls become steep and pinch together. The canyon widens again as you continue up the trail. \nJust after the 1.5-mile marker\, you will pass a small pool on the right side of the trail. This is a miniature oil seep where “white oil” naturally bubbles to the surface. \nCanyon Trail slips through a grove of live oaks to arrive at Walker Ranch\, which has been converted into a group campground. Passing picnic tables and fire rings\, you will spot an impressive stone fireplace left over from one of the cottages built by Frank Walker and his family on this site a century ago. THIS IS OUR DESTINATION! \nAfter a quick snack break and regrouping\, we will return the same way we came. \n \n10:30 am Option 2: \nMeet at the picnic tables across the bridge. Bring your own food and drinks. \nPlacerita Canyon Nature Center is open to the public. It has beautiful shady trees with tables below to picnic on. From placerita.org: \nPlacerita is an east-west running canyon featuring cool\, shaded oak groves\, a willow and sycamore-lined seasonal stream and numerous other interesting plant and animal communities. \nThe historic “Oak of the Golden Dream” is the site of California’s original gold discovery in 1842. \nNEW! Click here for an in-depth look at the Oak of the Golden Dream story (video.) \nAnother landmark is the Walker Cabin \, built by Frank Walker in 1920 for his family. \nA network of self-guiding nature\, history and hiking trails radiates out into the park from the Center\, with longer hikes leading to a seasonal waterfall and to the top of the Santa Clarita Divide. Picnicking is available near the Nature Center. \nThe park encompasses oak woodland\, chaparral\, and riparian plant communties on the north side of the San Gabriel Mountains southeast of the City of Santa Clarita. The park not only serves to conserve a slice of the wild environment but also endeavors to educate the public on the value of undisturbed flora and fauna through wild animal presentations\, nature hikes\, and self-guided educational trails. \nPlease feel free to contact the Nature Center at (661) 259-7721 if you have any questions. http://www.placerita.org/ \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Tongva - The 4072nd highest peak in California.
DESCRIPTION:The Stats \nDistance 6.5 milesRating 6-7/10\, not for beginnersElevation gain: 2000 ft.Trail: Fire Roads and Trails w/ some steep uphills \nThe PlanDon’s writeup \nWarning: This route starts uphill 1950 feet in less than 2 miles so don’t say I didn’t warn you!! Depending on your abilities gloves could come in handy and you could be doing some portions on all fours. \nWe’ll start by the Brand Park Library\, after a brief portion of the Brand Park Mtrwy we’ll be taking a direct and steep route up to Tongva Peak. At the top we’ll enjoy the views returning via Brand Canyon on the Brand Canyon Mtrwy. \nThe Story \nAccording to peakery.com data\, Tongva Peak ranks as the 4072nd highest mountain in California and the 37798th highest mountain in the United States. \nThe Tongva lived in villages on vast tribal lands that stretched from Orange County to Ventura County and from Riverside County to the Pacific Ocean\, including the Channel Islands. The skilled seafarers and hunters were knowledgeable and astute stewards of their land and its resources\, according to the Gabrielino/Tongva Tribal Council based in San Gabriel. \nTheir culture began to crumble in the late 1700s when the Spaniards forced them to build the missions and farm the surrounding land for the mission padres. The priests established the road from Mission San Gabriel to the San Fernando Mission along a path the Tongva had used for thousands of years. Portions still exist as La Crescenta Avenue in La Crescenta\, Honolulu Avenue in Montrose and La Tuna Canyon Road in Tujunga. \nThe mission road crossed an arroyo near what is now Orange Grove Boulevard and Colorado Avenue and continued north along the Verdugo Mountains. \nThe Verdugo range stretches about 10 miles across the eastern San Fernando Valley from La Tuna Canyon to Glendale. Its trails are a magnet for mountain bikers and hikers\, who say that although the mountains are surrounded by a population of millions\, recreation seekers can often ride or hike for hours without seeing anyone. \nHome to mountain lions\, deer and bobcats\, the Verdugos remain largely unspoiled by development\, much as they were when the Tongva built encampments in the foothills. \nWhen the mission system collapsed in the 1840s\, the Tongva culture and language all but disappeared. During the last three decades\, however\, Tongva descendants have been working to gain federal recognition as members of a Native American tribe\, which would make them eligible for health benefits\, housing assistance\, scholarships and gaming rights. \nAbout 350 Tongva descendants live in the Los Angeles basin today\, according to the tribal council’s cultural affairs officer. \nUnofficially\, the peak has had several monikers over the years–Star Peak\, Flat Top and Mount Tom among them. \nDirections \nExit on Western Ave. from the 5 freeway and go North toward the mountains. At the end of Western you’ll see the entrance to Brand Park across the street and a few feet to your right. Enter here and go past the ballfields to the parking lots by the library. Parking is free. \n******************************************************************* \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. This climb is considered strenuous. \nAs you approach the Manker Flat parking area you will be on a 4 lane road with a wide center divider. Parking is on both sides and in the divider. After you pass the Manker Flats campground on the right\, look for Angeles Falls Road. There is access through the divider at this point\, so you can turn left and park hopefully closer to the trail head. There is a gate across Angeles Falls road and porta potties. This is the trail head. The road up to Baldy is VERY curvy with VERY tight turns. Anybody who does not like twisty roads with dropoffs should be a passenger! \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \n******************************************************************* \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing.
