SUMMARY:Hike to Bridge to Nowhere
DESCRIPTION:This is one of the must-do hikes in Los Angeles: a moderate\, 9 miles (round trip) hike to one of the most interesting places of the San Gabriel Mountains. Bridge do Nowhere is a bridge located literally in the middle of nowhere in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. The bridge was built in 1936\, when they were building a road connecting the San Gabriel Valley and Wrightwood. However\, a massive flood in 1938 due to extremely heavy rain\, destroyed the road-in-construction\, so they decided to abandon the project\, leaving a perfectly finished bridge lost in the middle of nowhere. Now a company called Bungee America owns the land and does bungee jumping off the 100 foot bridge. \nA group of us is actually bungee jumping that day\, so this will be an even more exciting hike because we will get to see people bungee jump. It will be an all-around amazing experience: we will do a super fun hike to an amazing\, surreal location\, see a historical landmark of Los Angeles\, and to top it off\, get to see people bungee jumping! \nBy the way\, if you would like to sign up for bungee jumping\, go here: https://www.meetup.com/sober-treks/events/277116906 \nOne of the coolest things about this hike is that we will be doing A LOT of water crossings\, so expect to get wet. Also\, there are a lot of places we can actually swim\, which makes the day even more fun! We will be hiking for 4.5 miles\, 1\,000 feet elevation. It’s a moderate hike\, so you have to be in OK shape to do it. Like I said\, we’ll be crossing streams several times\, so your shoes will get wet (really wet)\, so make sure you wear shoes that can get wet. NO FLIP FLOPS OR SANDALS. It’s a rocky terrain\, so you need real shoes with ankle support and good tread . Running shoes or hiking shoes will be fine\, so long as you are OK with them getting soaked. \nWe will be meeting at the trailhead at 7:00 AM. Leigh is hiking with the bungee group\, while Eduardo will lead the hiking-only group. The hike to the bridge should take about 2 hours. We are planning on staying out there until around 1:00 PM\, so we should be back at our cars by 3:00 PM or so. DESCRIPTION:Length: 3.7 mi \nElevation gain: 600 ft \nRoute type: Loop \nVasquez Rocks Extended Loop via PCT is a 3.7 mile heavily moderately easy hike through\, well\, Vasquez Rocks Natural Area. \nVasquez Rocks Natural Area is a beautiful and unique park with rocks pointing out at 45 degrees\, creating an impressive\, almost surreal landscape. \nCheck it out:  \nCool\, huh? And although moderately easy\, the hike will take us through many different areas where we can climb up the rocks (by walking\, no rock climbing experience needed). \nThe hike normally takes just a couple hours\, but with detours\, exploring and playing around on the rocks\, it should take us 3 hours or so. \nTemps should be in the low 80’s that day\, so we can start at 10:00 AM and be fine. \nSee you all there! \nEduardo and Leigh.

There is one very steep trail at the final ascent to Mount Hollywood with a length of .2 miles. \nStarting at Parking Lot 2\, we take the Fern Canyon Trail to 5 points\, then ascend to the Helipad. From there we turn left down the Riverside Trail to the Greek Theater\, turning right past the bird sanctuary to Mt. Hollywood. Kinda steep in places\, but we’ll be taking it a relaxed pace so there be time to take photos and enjoy the scenery. The LOOP is 7 miles. \n \nDepending on the conditions\, we’ll take a side trip to Balance Rock. \n \nWATER – Bring 3 liters of water. \nBring a snack / lunch for our stop at the TOP. Bring a jacket\, hat\, comfortable hiking shoes or boots\, hiking poles (if needed)\, sunblock\, etc. \nCARPOOL – Feel free to meet up at Neptunes Net\, park on PCH\, and carpool to the lot. You can post a few days out and coordinate amongst yourselves. \nRESTROOMS – There is a restroom in the lot. A very cool and unique European experience! \n– Take a full day tour and sail on a real icebreaker \n– Go Ice fishing \n– Experience a snow sauna (that’s right!) and a snow Jacuzzi \n– Go on a Finnish sauna where you can go on a sauna\, come out and dip in frozen lake \n– Go Ice climbing \n– Ride a fatbike on the snow \n– Go Ice Karting. \nThese activities and locations are all absolutely amazing. However\, this trip will be even more amazing because we timed it in order to maximize our chances to see the Northern Lights. Displays of the Northern Lights do tend to intensify around the equinox months of March and September because the magnetic fields of the Earth and the Sun’s solar wind are more likely to be in sync. There are no guarantees\, but even stronger displays are therefore more likely around the spring equinox\, which be on March 19. March also tends to be the winter month with the clearest skies. New moon is March 24\, which means not only we will be getting the darkest skies of the month\, but also the ski will be very dark on the 19th.
