SUMMARY:Liebre Mountain via PCT (Replaces Jackson Lake hike due to Bridge Fire)
DESCRIPTION:Liebre Mountain via PCT (Replaces Jackson Lake hike due to Bridge Fire) \nDESCRIPTION: The Bridge fire continues to expand so the road to Lake Jackson is closed as it leads into an evacuation zone (which of course we don’t want to enter). Relatively cooler weather should allow us to enjoy the PCT section up to Liebre Mountain. The forecast is mainly sunny. High 83F. Winds SW at 10 to 20 mph (which should help with air quality). \nThe trail is flattish and parallels the road for about one mile before it turns up the hill. There is not a lot of shade\, in the first part of this hike\, but we will be on the uphill section in the cooler early morning. As we climb a series of moderately graded PCT switchbacks we enjoy nice views of the Antelope Valley NE. After a few miles we take a short break at shady Horse Camp before continuing up through a more wooded area (oaks and pines)\, eventually reaching the ridge at ~5700′. Here there are oaks and sweeping views of the mountains/valleys W and N of us\, including Pyramid Lake and Castaic/ Santa Clarita to the South. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Pacific Crest Trail\, Co Hwy N2 at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Sep 14).\nDistance: Approximately 8.6 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,067 feet.\nTime: Approximately 4.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. \nESSENTIAL GEAR: Hiking boots and poles. SUMMARY:Dillon Divide to Dutch Louie's Tunnel
DESCRIPTION:Saturday October 5\, 2024: LOCAL – Pacoima Wash Canyon to Dutch Louie’s Tunnel \n***** RAIN OR SNOW FALLING AT TRAILHEAD CANCELS THIS HIKE ****** \nDISTANCE: 5 miles (out and back\, REVERSE style – that means uphill on the way back!) \nGAIN: ~ 850′ elevation gain\, all on the way back \nRATING: Moderate + (for the Gain on the way back up). You should be in good physical condition for the climb back up from the Wash. \nNOTE: Please visit the Dropbox link below to read our “Important Information” before answering “Yes” to the question below AND signing up for this hike. https://www.dropbox.com/s/e3wv87jx6mbttgg/Post%20COVID%20Rules%2007122021.docx?dl=0\nThank You \nDESCRIPTION: This is another rarely visited local gem close to SCV. THANK YOU GARIN! \nThe hike starts at Dillon Divide\, a trailhead/ turnout\, on Little Tujunga Canyon. We follow a dirt road for a short distance until a single track trail turns off left into Pacoima Canyon. It is a nice hike down hill into the canyon. Once in the canyon\, we follow trails and the creek bed: the creek bed is dry at this time of year. Bring poles to help with stepping stones. The trail will take us to Dutch Louie Tunnel which has water flowing out of it. You do not need to go into the tunnel but if you do\, your feet will get wet\, so plan accordingly (water shoes?). \n(History: A prospector carved the tunnel through the rock to divert the creek\, so he could mine for gold in a dry creek bed. The tunnel is a 100-150 feet long and it still has the creek running through it. Here is some fun stuff about the mine\, Dutch Louie\, and other historical and geological stuff about the area:\nhttps://www.secretmines.com/p/pacoima-canyon-mines.html ) \nMEET YOUR LEADER:\nAt Dillon Divide at 8.15AM for a 8:30AM start down the trail. \nBRING: Water\, electrolytes. Sunscreen\, hat\, lunch/ snacks\, hiking poles (helpful on the uphill portion)\, and a camera. Wear layered clothing in case it gets hot or cold (we will post forecast). Wear boots with lots of tread.\nGoing in the short wet Tunnel – Bring a small flashlight/headlight. !! You will get wet feet – wear waterproof hiking boots or have water shoes.\nNOTE: FOR EVERYONE’S SAFETY\, IF YOU WANT TO GO IN THE TUNNEL WITH OTHERS – BRING/ WEAR A CLOSE-FITTING MASK WHEN IN IT. \nCARPOOLS: We do not Organize these. However\, due to LIMITED PARKING at the Trailhead\, if you can carpool with friends you trust\, you can meet in NORTH SCV by STARBUCKS (address: 16548 Soledad Cyn Rd\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387)\, in the Sand Cyn / Soledad Cyn Rd\, VONS strip mall lot\, off 14 Hwy. Dillon Divide TH is 10.6 miles from this Starbucks ( ~ 22 mins). \nDIRECTIONS to Trailhead (34.34461\, -118.34959):\nFrom South:\nTake I-5 North to SR-14 North (Lancaster / Palmdale). Exit at Sand Canyon\, and turn right on to Sand Canyon (South/East). \n(Note: If you are coming from anywhere in SFV South or East of of 5/ 14 HWY split\, Google may route you along the 210 and up Little Tujunga Canyon Road\, as the shortest route. If you are familiar with this route\, take it). \nFrom North (A/V):\nTake SR-14 South. Exit at Sand Canyon – Exit 9. On the off ramp\, keep in left lane and go up left on to Soledad Canyon. Almost immediately\, at the light\, turn left over the highway and keep going straight on to Sand Canyon – watch out for the 4 way STOP after the In-n-Out burger! \nBoth directions:\nNext (it’s another 10.6 miles total from 14) … Continue on Sand Canyon\, passing all the mansions\, past Placerita Canyon Rd. on your right\, etc.\, keep going straight\, as you enter the Angeles National Forest and continue up!up!up! along Sand Canyon Road\, until you see a winged memorial at a bad corner (on the right side). Shortly after this\, you will go around a sharp left hand bend and crest the hill (on this saddler you are now 6.1 miles from the highway and have another 4.2 miles to go); Bear Divide Vista picnic/parking area is immediately on the right.\nContinue 4.1 miles down the other side and eventually up around some bad curves\, until you see Dillon Divide\, a white gate on the left ( 34.34461\, -118.34959). \nPARKING: BE AWARE OF FAST CARS\, AT TRAIL HEAD\, PLEASE PARK STRAIGHT IN\, close as possible together and do not block the white gate.\nLIMITED PARKING but there are several turnouts below and above the gate – SEE DIAGRAM IN PHOTO ALBUM. \nAdventure Pass: No. There are no bathrooms at trail head but plenty of bushes. \nDogs: OK\, if kept on a leash and well behaved around other dogs and people with poles. \nThis is another hike that may not be around for much longer. I suggest you were pants. \nLeaders: Dave Pulsifer

SUMMARY:Fish Canyon Narrows
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nExcellent write up of this hike at Hikespeak “Fish Canyon Narrows in the Sierra Polona Mountains” by Seth Snigelske. This is a beautiful area. Bring your camera. Not only is the area beautiful\, but you might see some of the endangered species along the way. Please stay on the trails here and watch where you step during the stream crossings. The hike starts on an abandoned asphalt road\, moves onto a dirt road at the north end of Castaic Lake and follows Fish Canyon. At the old Cienaga campground we split off the main trail for the trail to Piano Box Canyon\, a beautiful single track wooded trail. After Piano Box we will enter the narrows with red/orange cliffs. Our next 1.5 miles will be following a creek bed with 100′ cliffs on both sides. This section of the hike reminds me of Zion National Park. We will take a 15 minute snack and rest stop at the old Roger Camp before heading back to our cars. Be sure to enjoy and take pictures during our hike in the narrows. \nDETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: 37773 Templin Highway at 7:30 am\, departure at 7:45 am sharp (December 14).\n· Distance: ~ 11.5 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1050′\n· Time: Approximately 7 hours hiking including a 15 minute snack break.\n· Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Should skip this hike.\n· Hiking Poles – recommended (for water crossings) I wouldn’t hike the section between piano box and Rodger Camp without hiking poles.\n· Restrooms – None.\n· Adventure Pass – None Required. \nHike leader Notes: Pre-hiked this trail on 11/27/24. The fall colors are great with plenty of water. As we near the end of the year I like to toss our a tough hike. The section between the start and Piano Box is a 4 but the section between Piano Box and Roger Camp will wear you out. I have hiked this section 5 times and it wears me out each time. There is bear scat and Mt Lion tracks on this trail so lets stay together. Lots of poison oak (red this time of year). I will include photos from 11/27 hike. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. Any guest that you wish to invite should join the Community Hiking Club (CHC) to participate. Depending on water flow\, we may cross streams\, but there aren’t exposures\, bugs or other warnings. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, snakes\, etc. on this hike. SUMMARY:Kagel Mountain via Dillion Divide
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nThis will be the last hike of 2024! I hope something a little closer to home and a little shorter to mark the end of the year might make it easier to get a larger – maybe celebratory – group together to ring out 2024 might be fun. As usual you can expect beautiful views\, and you might like that this trail is largely a well-maintained fire road. At the peak we will visit a paragliding launch pad where we might see some paragliders in action (if we’re lucky). Please note the trailhead is at Dillion Divide on Little Tujunga Road. SUMMARY:East Canyon Trail to Jones Junction
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: We’re pivoting from the Chilao to Mt. Hillyer hike to a local favorite (East Canyon) in an abundance of caution due to local fires and to stay clear of emergency vehicles and traffic. This is an old club favorite. It’s an out-and-back trail that is popular for birding\, hiking\, biking and running\, but should not be too busy during our trek (I hope). Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash. AllTrails reports the trail is in good shape and has some excellent back country as well as summit views. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike Organizer(s): Michele E.\nMeet: Trailhead near small parking lot at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Jan 11).\nDistance: Approximately 5.8 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,328 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.0 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: Are down the road from the trailhead\nAdventure Pass: None Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Santa Paula Canyon to Punchbowls
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: Trail head to the left of St. Thomas Aquinas College entrance.\n· Distance: ~ 10 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1600′\n· Time: Approximately 5 hours hiking including a couple of 15 minute breaks.\n· Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Are OK.\n· Hiking Poles – recommended\n· Restrooms – None.\n· Adventure Pass –Depends were you park. \nHike leader Notes: With the events of the past few weeks lets do a hike in Ojai. Pre-hiked this trail on 01/16/25. Nice water flow but you can keep your feet dry if you try. Our trail starts just pass St. Thomas Aquinas College. There are a few creek crossings and a fair amount of bouldering. Nice views\, waterfall\, and swimming holes\, (to cold for me) Our hike will take us pass Big Cone campgrounds. Down a small section without a trail to the falls. Up a steep section to the top of the falls. Follow the trail pass Cross Camp to the Punch Bowl. There are some sections were the trail is hard to follow. I will go at a slower pace\, 2.5 MPH. Stay with me and we will be alright. The early start is because of the limited parking and how popular this trail is. Carpooling would be best. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather at the start of the hike. \nESSENTIAL GEAR:\nHiking boots and poles.\nClothing layers recommended.\nSnacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets.\nHat and sunscreen. \nAdditional Hiking and Survival Gear Recommendations (link) \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3/4\, Intermediate (see chart below) – mainly for the bouldering and the steep uphill section. \nCHC HIKE RANKING SCALE:\n1.
