SUMMARY:Piedra Blanca Trailhead to Pine Mountain Lodge Campground - All Day Event
DESCRIPTION:Distance : 12.2 miles out and back \nElevation Gain : about 2\,800 ft. \nDifficulty: Strenuous due to distance \nTotal Hike Time : 6 hours \nThe iconic rock formations of the Piedra Blanca stretch approximately one mile east to west. As we pass through these massive sandstone giants you will see many hidden rock caves. The entire valley is blanketed in manzanita\, sage\, and other native chaparral\, along with a few lone stands of pine trees. We will follow the Sespe Creek and it’s tributaries all the way up the valley. We will pass through the white rocks from which this area gets its name. After that we will pass through Piedra Blanca Campground and finally take a well deserved break at Pine Mountain Lodge Campground before we turn around and head back down the mountain. During this hike we will traverse 7 different water crossings. \nHiking boots and walking sticks recommended. \nDress warmly in layers. Overnight temps have been below freezing but daytime temps have been in the the mid 80’s. \nBring a lunch and plenty of water. This is a long strenuous hike and proper nutrition and hydration will be essential. \nSunscreen and sunglasses also recommended. This is a very exposed trail.

SUMMARY:NEW Lollipop: PCT- Spruce Draw - to Lake Hughes Truck Trail - PCT
DESCRIPTION:NEW Lollipop: PCT to Spruce Draw then hiking the Leona Divide Fire Rd west to the intersection of Lake Hughes Truck Trail; We will take a snack break at the Intersection then return counter-clock wise hiking east on the PCT back to our cars on San Francisquito Cyn Rd. \nDISTANCE / GAIN:\n~ 8.5 miles Round Trip / 1732′ gain. \nRATING: Moderate +\nYou need to be in good physical condition to complete these\, due to some reasonably significant gain over a short distance (mainly near the start). \nHike duration: ~ 4 hours total. \nMeet: At the trailhead at 8:15 AM for a 8:30 AM start up the trail. \nDescription: \nThis is a great local hike on a well maintained portion of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) single track\, only 25 minutes from the SCV! This hike area is popular due to its remote nature and rapid access to some great views of surrounding areas including the Mohave desert\, Lancaster\, Martindale Ridge and the distant Tehachapi Mtns. \nWe start near Green Valley Ranger station using the PCT heading North. We will cross the fire road leading up to Grass Mtn\, stop briefly if it is clear to enjoy the views of the Mojave desert and Tehachapi.\nWe will stay on the PCT and continue North. This is a beautiful shady portion of the PCT that takes us to remote Spruce Draw canyon then on to the Fire Rd returning back via the PCT. \nNote: The return leg on the PCT has some loose rocks and minor washouts from the recent rains so please wear boots with good treads. \nDirections to the trail head (34.634482\, -118.390112):\nThe trailhead is where the PCT crosses San Francisquito Canyon Road\, using these numbers in Google\, or WAZE. \nLeader’s note: No restrooms at trailhead\, plenty of bushes. There is a bathroom in the gas station on corner of San Francisquito Cyn Rd. and Spunky Cyn Rd. in Green Valley. \nDirections from Copper Hill Dr\, in SCV to trail head:\nFind the light that is the intersection of San Francisquito Canyon Road and Copper Hill Dr. Reset your odometer here – the trailhead is 17.7 miles (about 25 mins.) from this light. When you arrive in Green Valley\, at Stop sign\, go straight through intersection on San Francisquito Cyn Rd. The Ranger station is on the left\, 2 minutes later. The trailhead\, where the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) crosses San Francisquito\, is 0.2 miles beyond that – look for PCT signs and parked cars. Park on the gravel shoulder\, on either side\, near where the PCT crosses the road – this is our “trail head”. \nHike Starting Place/ Time: (34.634482\, -118.390112) \nAdventure pass: Not required. \nBRING: Hiking poles are helpful for the hills. Bring a snack and at least 2L water and 1L Gatorade/ Salt sticks; camera\, cap and sunscreen. Dress in layers as it can be windy and chilly in the shady areas. Bring plastic bags for the possibility of muddy boots and change of shoes. \nLeader: Nancy Harrison

From the trailhead\, we catch our first glimpse of the lookout tower\, 2400′ above. \nNext comes a 1340′ “butt kicker”\, as we start from the trailhead up the steepest part of the hike (for ~ 2 miles with some service road switchbacks ). We eventually reach the saddle and can pause to enjoy a panoramic view across the Piru creek area and the Sespe Wilderness to the West\, And marvel at the Angular Angular unconformitys to the west. \nAfter catching our breath\, it’s another ~ 2 miles and 1060′ to the peak via winding through some massive Conglomerate Rocks and a a series of shallow switchbacks on the East side of the mountain\, and more on the West side\, gradually approaching the peak. Eventually the tower comes into view and after rounding a bend\, we break out at the summit and an incredible view of Pyramid Lake below. \nBring something to eat because we will have snacky time at the tower and by the time you get there you will be ready for some food for your face as you enjoy the 360 degree view. From here\, if it is clear\, we can see just about every major peak around the Northern LA area\, even Mt Baldy! \nMeet your leader:\nAt 7:45AM in front of the white gate near Frenchman’s Flat Campground\n( 34.616492\, -118.743782 ); we head up the old highway at 8:00AM sharp. \nDirections from SCV:\nGo north on the I-5\, past Castaic and exit at Templin Hwy\, Exit # 183. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp\, go under the freeway to a T junction\, then turn right. Follow this bumpy 2 lane road (Old Hwy 99) for 5 miles until it ends at a white forest service gate where there is parking (this is Frenchman’s Flat Camping area). Display your Adventure Pass in your windshield. There are bathrooms at this trailhead. \nBring:\nA snack/lunch\, water (3 liters is recommended)\, including 1L electrolytes if it is a hot day\, sunscreen\, hat\, hiking poles if you have them. \n!!! Wear layered clothing and pack a windbreaker as it may turn windy / cold at the top. Check weather forecast. Good boots with tread are a given. \nAdventure Pass: YES. Required for parking in the Angeles National Forest. 1/car for those who drive. These can be obtained at any BIG 5 Sporting Goods store; $5 for a day pass\, $30 for a year pass. \nBathrooms: Pit Toilets at the trail head and at the visitor center up on top of the mountain. \nDogs: OK \, if on leash and well behaved. Please keep the distance\, lack of shade\, and your dog’s stamina in mind. \nLeader(s): Paul H and Gary S

SUMMARY:Santa Susana Stage Road - Beginer hike but the Devils in the details
DESCRIPTION:Details\nThis is a beginner hike with a tad bit of challenge due to gains and a tad bit of scrambling and bush whacking. \n*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes.\nMeetup Time: 7:15 A.M. (We hit the trail at 7:30) \nDISTANCE: 5 miles – out and back \nGAIN: 863 ft \nRATED: Beginner + for a little bit of rock scrambling and slight bush whacking. \nHIKE DURATION: About 2 ½ to 3 hours (including a 20-minute snacky time!) \nDESCRIPTION: The Santa Susana Pass is a narrow gap in the Santa Susana Mountains that separates the San Fernando Valley from Simi Valley. In the mid-19th century\, the Santa Susana Pass became an important transportation route for wagons and stagecoaches traveling between Los Angeles and points north. \nThe stagecoaches and wagons would have to make a sketchy journey down the Devils slide\, an angular rock formation located within the pass. This was so treacherous horses were usually blindfolded and chains were used to augment brakes on the steep descent. Passengers debarked and walked\, as opposed to risking gravity and angular momentum. The deep ruts made by the wagons on the ‘Devil’s Slide’ section are still visible. \nWe will be hiking up the Devils Slide to a overlook where you can see the angle of the Devils Slide and an some breathtaking views of the pass and …uh…the industrial buildings and power lines in the distance. There are a couple of shady Oaks we can park under for Snacky time\, then we will be making our way back down to the to the Devils slide and once back to the bottom a little loop back to the trail head. \nBRING: Strong shoes\, (most of this trail is in the open with little or no shade) Poles will be useful for some the technical areas.; snack; a hat; !!sunscreen!!\, bug spray / bug net (in case). 3 liters of liquids (2L water/ 1-liter electrolytes\, i.e.\, Gatorade). \nADVENTURE PASS: No \n**MEET AT: (**Google GPS Coordinates: 34°14’58.8″N 118°37’10.9″W) The Andora Ave Trail head is in a neighborhood\, so please be quiet and respectful of the locals. Meet at the picnic tables at the trail head. \nBathrooms: Pitt Toilet at the Trail head. \nDogs: OK\, if well behaved around other dogs/ people with hiking poles and on a leash. \nLeaders: Paul H\, and Gary S.

SUMMARY:BKS - Lets hike the biggest thing in the neighborhood - Mt Lukens
DESCRIPTION:This is Part two of the new BKS (Butt Kicking Series) of hikes! *(Hikes with close to 3000′ Gain and or 10 or more miles.) \n*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes. \nMeetup Time: 7:15 A.M. ( We hit the trail at 7:30) \nDISTANCE: 9.9 miles – Loop \nGAIN: 2\,795 ft \nRATED: Strenuous mainly for the almost 10-mile Distance and the 2\,795 ‘ gain. Not a hike for Beginners! \nHIKE DURATION: About 5 1/2 to 6 hours (including a 20-minute snacky time!) \nDESCRIPTION: Mount Lukens is a mountain located in the San Gabriel Mountains\, just north of the city of Glendale\, California. It is the highest point in the city of Los Angeles\, with an elevation of 5\,074 feet (1\,547 meters) above sea level. At the end of the day\, it’s just one of many peaks in the San Gabriel Mountains\, trying to get attention by being all “look at me\, I’m so tall and imposing…. Climb me!”. \nThe plan is to hike the counterclockwise loop up to the summit of this behemoth. The trail will share some of its ancient secrets as we pass through the lower slopes that consist of Precambrian-age schist and gneiss\, which are some of the oldest rocks in the region. As we gain altitude above the lower slopes\, we will be passing through younger (only 100 million years) Cretaceous granite with metamorphic outcroppings of shist\, gneiss\, and amphibolite scattered around for extra intrusive spice. \nOnce we reach the summit if we are lucky enough for a clear day\, we should be available to see from one end of the San Fernando Valley to the Pacific\, and perhaps even Catalina. As we sit at the summit and admire the curvature of the horizon\, we will break for snacky time! So\, bring something good to eat and recharge your body. From this point it’s all downhill to the parking lot where we started ( more or less). \nBRING: Strong shoes\, dress in layers might be chilly in the morning\, (most of this trail is in the open with little or no shade) Poles will be useful for some the technical areas.; snack lunch; a hat; !!sunscreen!!\, bug spray / bug net (in case). 3 liters of liquids (2L water/ 1-liter electrolytes\, i.e.\, Gatorade). \nADVENTURE PASS: YES. Required for parking in the Angeles National Forest. 1/car for those who drive. These can be obtained at any BIG 5 Sporting Goods store; $5 for a day pass\, $30 for a year pass. \n**MEET AT: (**Google GPS Coordinates: 34.249481462242734\, -118.25364621694166) We will be in the parking lot in front of the bathrooms. \nBathrooms: Indeed\, there will be bathroom at the meetup location. \nDogs: OK\, if well behaved around other dogs/ people with hiking poles and on a leash. \nLeaders: Paul H\, and Gary S.

SUMMARY:Substitute Hike for the Heat - Fish Canyon Water Hike to Piano Box Canyon
DESCRIPTION:******* RAIN FALLING AT TRAILHEAD CANCELS ALL HIKES ******* \nSaturday\, May 13\, 2023 – Time to get your feet wet with 36 Stream Crossings! That’s right kids\, we are hiking Fish Canyon to Piano Box Canyon (and maybe beyond a bit up into the Narrows). \nFish Canyon is a BKS Substitute hike for the previously scheduled Mt Lukens hike because of the forecast 90+ degree weather this Saturday. \nThis substitute hike will give you a great opportunity to stay COOL while hiking Saturday – and you will have to entertain yourself with about 36 separate creek crossing over the fairly fast flowing\, fairly high flow rate creek! We just pre-hiked it\, and its easy enough and plenty safe enough to cross. It is not possible to cross the creek without walking through it – so you WILL get wet – AT LEAST UP TO YOUR KNEES! Shorts or pants that you can roll up during the crossings are advised\, as are water-friendly footwear that you can cross through the creek with and still hike with. Be advised there is a considerable amount of poison oak/poison ivy along the trail\, so take that into account regarding long pants. \nMany of you have previously been up Fish Canyon\, but a LOT has changed after this winter’s rain and storm activity. You won’t recognize parts of the canyon compared to how it was. LOTS of the old asphalt road and the dirt trails are highly eroded\, or GONE! The trail is in poor shape in many places\, and because of the heavy erosion\, the normally good trail is quite rocky and slower to hike. We’ll have to walk up the road in the water in some cases\, and bushwhack a bit to find portions of the trail since parts have been destroyed. For anyone who hasn’t been up there since this winter\, you will be in for a surprise and many NEW landscapes and topography. \nDistance: ~ 8ish Miles total (Min 4 miles in and back out) \nGain: ~ 500′ (mostly the road back to the car from the trailhead) \nHiking Time: ~ 4+ hours \nRating: Moderate (mainly for an uphill stretch of highway at the end along the road\, returning to the cars from the gate where we park. \nNote – You should to be in good general condition to enjoy this hike. \nNormal Hike Description:\nThis is a beautiful area containing 37 types of endangered species. It is prime yellow-legged frog and Arroyo Toad Habitat. Bring your camera. Not only is the area beautiful\, but you might see some of the endangered species along the way. Please stay on the trails here\, and watch where you step during the stream crossings. \nThe hike starts on an abandoned asphalt road\, moves onto a dirt road at the north end of Castaic Lake and follows Fish Canyon. The only major hill is the asphalt road coming back up to the cars\, the trail is fairly level the rest of the way. The trail through Fish Canyon is interspersed with portions of what is left of the old cement road from the 1930s up into the Canyon. \nThen we split off the main trail for the trail to Piano Box Canyon\, a beautiful single track wooded trail. We will snack and rest in Piano box and have ample time to enjoy the canyon walls of reddish/orange rock before returning. \nMeet your leader at the Trail Head (Trailhead address below) – or put this # into Google Maps (34.6022\, -118.6707):\n37773 Templin Highway\, Angeles National Forest\, Castaic\, CA 91384 \nDirections to Trail head (about 30 mins) from SCV / SFV areas:\nTake the I-5 Freeway North from Santa Clarita. About 6 miles north of Lake Hughes/Castaic\, exit at Templin Highway EAST. Turn right at bottom of FWY off ramp.\nFollow Templin Hwy East (a curvy road) straight (i.e. do not turn off it). Drive about 10 mins max\, all the way until it ends at a closed white gate/ concrete barrier. You can park along the road beside it\, leave nothing showing in your vehicle. \nMeeting Time:\nMeet at the white gate at the trail head at 7:00AM for an 7:15AM SHARP departure down to the trailhead and Fish Canyon.\nNote: No Adventure Pass needed and No bathrooms at trailhead. \nBring:\nLunch/ snack\, lots of water (2 – 3 liters)\, and a camera. \nWear:\nLayered clothing\, hat\, sunscreen\, shoes with good tread\, long pants in case there is poison oak or ticks about. \nThere are about 18 separate water crossings in each direction – so be prepared for about 36 total water crossings IN THE WATER. There is no option to cross the creeks without getting wet up to about your knees! \nDogs: NOT RECOMMENDED. The creek is moving fast with moderately heavy flow rates. There are a total of 36 creek crossings total and in many places there is no trail left\, or is highly eroded. What is left of the trail is very rocky and will be difficult for a dog to walk on. The trail is missing in quite a few places\, and there are sections with tall grasses that have very little visibility regarding snakes and/or ticks. Any dog brought must be kept on a leash and be well behaved around other dogs/ people with poles. \nLeader: Gary and Paul

SUMMARY:Trail Canyon Falls Trail - Big Tujunja Canyon
DESCRIPTION:*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes. \nMeetup Time: 7:30 A.M. (We hit the trail promptly at 7:45) \nPARKING/CARPOOLING – There is parking on the side of Big Tujunga Cyn Road\, but this is a popular hike right now and parking is limited – so carpooling is highly recommended. DO NOT KEEP ANY VALUABLES IN SIGHT IN YOUR VEHICLE! – there have been car break-ins when people left valuables visible in their car! \nDISTANCE: Minimum 4.9 miles – out and back. \nGAIN: Minimum 1276 ft \nRATED: Intermediate hike\, with some exposed hill climbs. Several creek crossings\, but you do not need to get wet. \nHIKE DURATION: About 3 – 4 hours (including a 20-minute snack time at the creek!). \nDESCRIPTION:\nWe’ll park on the highway at the trailhead. The first 3/4 mile is a dirt road that has some old grandfathered properties that we’ll pass by. At that point\, we’ll follow the canyon bottom along a well running creek\, and cross over the creek several times (you can cross without getting your feet wet). We’ll then leave the wonderful and cool creek bottom area\, and climb up an exposed ridge for another mile or so\, then drop back down slightly to the top of a really nice waterfall. We’ll likely stop there for a break/snack before returning the way we came. The temperature is expected to be in the 80’s-90’s Saturday\, but we’ll update you as we get closer with an updated forecast. \nSome scrambling Involved – To go to the bottom of the Waterfall\, you’ll need to climb down a short section of nearly vertical wall. You can step down\, but you will need to hold onto installed ropes to guide you down\, but to climb back up\, you’ll need to step up that wall\, and use the installed ropes to pull yourself up. Its only about 20 feet\, and should be doable for everyone\, but be aware. \nCAUTIONS: \n\nIf you are afraid of heights\, the exposed hill climb up to the waterfall is steep and narrow.\nRattlesnakes – always a possibility this time of year.\nParking and thefts – we saw a vehicle that someone had broken a window to steal what was inside. Do NOT leave anything visible in your car!\n\nBRING: \n\nAssume it will be warm to hot\, but it’s always smart to layer.\nPoles will be useful for creek crossing and the hill climb to the waterfall.\nRecommend a minimum of 3 liters of Water\, Electrolytes\, Snack lunch; a hat; and Sunscreen.\n\nADVENTURE PASS: Not required. \n**MEET AT: (**Google GPS Coordinates: 34.303714068691164\, -118.25772643048175**) Park on the side of the highway where available. If you’re coming from the 210 freeway\, exit at Sunland Blvd\, go north. It turns into Foothill Blvd. Turn left at Vista Oro\, go north to Big Tujunga Canyon Road\, then turn right (north) approx 4.8 miles. Look for cars parked along the highway for the trailhead. Meet at the gate at the trailhead at 7:30 am. We start hiking promptly at 7:45 am. \nLearn more: AllTrails page for this hike. The trail will take us to Dutch Louie Tunnel which has water flowing out of it. You do not need to got into the tunnel but if you do\, your feet will get wet\, so plan accordingly (water shoes?). \n(History: A prospector carved the tunnel through the rock to divert the creek\, so he could mine for gold in a dry creek bed. The tunnel is a 100-150 feet long and it still has the creek running through it. Here is some fun stuff about the mine\, Dutch Louie\, and other historical and geological stuff about the area:\nhttps://www.secretmines.com/p/pacoima-canyon-mines.html ) \nAfter the tunnel\, we will continue a little further up steam to the picturesque Dagger Flat area to snack before heading back the same way up out of the canyon. \nMEET YOUR LEADER:\nAt Dillon Divide at 7.00AM for a 7:15AM start down the trail. \nBRING: Plenty of water (3 liters recommended)\, electrolytes (e.g. Gatorade). SUMMARY:BKS - Switchback Hike - Mount Baden Powell O/B
DESCRIPTION:BKS ( Butt Kicker Series) Saturday July 15th\, 2023 – Vincent Gulch Divide to Mount Baden-Powell O/B \n******************************************************\n** Special Note on directions to the trailhead ** \nHighway 2 is still closed at Red Box.\nMake sure to take the route through Newhall via the northeast on CA-14 North and Pearblossom Hwy. See the map in the attached photos for details.\n******************************************************* \nHike: Meet at Vincent Gulch Divide trailhead at 7:15 A.M. Details below. \n***** Rain or extreme heat cancels all hikes***** \nDistance/ Gain: 7.8 miles total; 2\,800′ gain\, Out and Back style ( 40 X 2 Switchbacks!) \nRating: Moderate ++/ Strenuous (remember we will be at a higher altitude where the air is thinner) \nDescription: Picture this: you’re standing at the trailhead\, full of enthusiasm and optimism. The sun is shining\, the birds are chirping\, and you’re ready to conquer this mountain like any other BKS hike\, however Mount Baden Powell has a dark side that will make you question your life choices. \nGet ready for the never-ending switchbacks. Just when you think you’ve conquered one\, another pops up\, mocking your efforts and testing your endurance. It’s like a game of “Whack-a-Mole\,” but instead of moles\, it’s your spirit that gets repeatedly whacked by 40 switchbacks. \nBe prepared for fellow hikers on the trail that will be either wildly enthusiastic or completely delirious. There’s no in-between. Some will cheer you on with phrases like\, “You’re almost there!” and “You got this!” while others will mumble something incomprehensible that you can one can only assume is a secret hiker’s mantra. \nOnce we reach the summit we will be rewarded for our perseverance with stunning vistas and breathtaking views. All the sweat\, sore muscles\, and moments of doubt instantly become worth it\, not to mention a snack or a sandwich. \nAfter a well-deserved snacky time\, we will get our group photo and head on back down past Wally Waldon a local celebrity. This is a Limber Pine ( Pinus Flexilis) that is 1500 years old and believed to be the oldest living thing in the entire San Gabriel Mountains. \nMeeting your leader at the trailhead: We will meet at Vincent Gulch Divide at 7:15 AM for a 7:30 AM departure up the trail. (34.3731391721299\, -117.75191038616146) \nAdventure Pass: YES \nBathrooms: YES! At the trailhead. \nBring: Lots of water (3+ L)\, Electrolytes like Gatorade\, a hat\, sunscreen\, a lunch/ snack and hiking poles. Watch the weather forecast\, but it is always a good idea to pack another layer (in case it gets cold up there above 9000′ ). Good shoes with tread are a must. \nDogs: OK\, if on a leash and well-behaved with other dogs / people carrying poles. If you bring your dog\, please drive yourself. We do not recommend bringing our K9 friends if the weather forecast says it will be HOT. \nCarpool: SCV Caravan / Friends Carpool Meeting Spot – in NORTH Santa Clarita Valley (SCV): We do not organize carpools however if you want to carpool\, we suggest you message hikers/ close friends who you already know well and trust from a COVID perspective. A convenient place to meet on the way is: Outside STARBUCKS (16548 Soledad Canyon Rd\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387)\, in the SAND CANYON/ Soledad Canyon Road junction VONs strip mall parking lot\, off 14 Hwy.\nTHIS IS NOT A CHC-ORGANIZED CARPOOL \nHike Lead: Paul H

SUMMARY:Escape the Heat this weekend - Mt. Pinos\, Sawmill Peak (and maybe Grouse Peak)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday July 22\, 2023 \nMeetup Time : 7:45 A.M. (8:00 am SHARP hiking start) \nIt is predicted to be 100 F + in SCV this weekend. Escape with us to the cooler mountains nearby where we can enjoy the mid/high 70’s at 8\,000′. \nHEAT ALERT: Due to the current heat wave\, I will provide a followup weather/temperature forecast by Thursday before event. \nDISTANCE: 7 miles or 10.5 miles total (see Description) – out and back style. \nGAIN: 1100′ or 1900′ total (see Description) \nRATED: Not for beginners. This one is Moderate / Moderate +\, mainly for thin air (low oxygen) impact and a few steeper stretches. \nHIKE DURATION: About 4-1/2 hours (including a 20 minute snack break) \nDESCRIPTION:\nThis 7 mile hike (3.5 miles each way) from the 8340 ft. trail head takes you to 2 summits (first Mount Pinos 8831 ft. and then Sawmill Mountain 8818 ft). Moderate hikers should be easily able to complete all three summits.\nExtra credit: 3 extra miles to the final Peak at Grouse 8\,573 ft and back.\nOnce we get to Sawmill\, depending on the group make up/temperature/weather\, etc. we will collectively decide\, but most probably we will continue on to Grouse\, yet another Peak. If we do\, it would be almost 10.5 and 1200′ gain total for the hike.\nBear in mind\, this entire “out and back” trail is very well marked/ easy to follow\, so you can safely turn around at ANY stage\, depending on your ability/ stamina. Also\, we will have signposted the route with our popular orange chalk arrows to help you 🙂 \nMount Pinos is the highest point in Ventura County and lies on the edge of the Chumash Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest. Mount Pinos\, created over 100 million years ago was known as Iwihinmu to the indigenous Chumash people. The slopes are a mix of sub-alpine\, white fir\, and Jeffrey Pine habitats. The views from Mount Pinos are beautiful\, especially if air is clear (San Joaquin Valley to the North\, Tehachapi to the East\, and the Carrizo Plain and Temblor Mountains to the Northwest).\nHopefully\, there should still be plenty of wildflower action at this cooler altitude. \nBRING:\nStrong shoes\, dress in layers (expecting 75 F at start). Poles are useful\, if you have them; snack lunch; a hat; !!sunscreen!!\, bug spray / bug net (in case). 3 liters of liquids (2L water/ 1 liter electrolytes\, i.e. Gatorade)\, and your camera. \nADVENTURE PASS:\nNot required in Summer. See bathroom note below. \nMEET : (Google Coordinates 34.8135\, -119.1263)\nYour leader at the Mt Pinos / Nordic Hut trailhead parking at 8:00 AM; we will depart up the trail to Mt Pinos at 8:00 AM SHARP.\nAllow 1-1/4 hours to get to trailhead from Santa Clarita. \nDIRECTIONS: From Santa Clarita Valley: Take I-5 North ~ 40 miles to the Frazier Park off ramp. Exit\, turn left under highway. Go West on the Frazier Park Road for about 12 miles passing Lockhart Valley Road (on the left) until you see signs for Mt. Pinos. Stay to the left at the main fork (do not go to Pine Mountain Club). Follow the road ahead\, twisting and turning 9 miles up the mountain to the Nordic Hut parking area\, at the end of the road. Park on the left side\, by the Mt Pinos trailhead\, and look for the group there. \nNOTE: There may (or may not) be operational Porta Potty toilets at trailhead or campground nearby. We recommend a quick stop as you exit the 5 Fwy at the Truck stop / gas station on the left\, before heading toward Frazier Park. \nDRIVING: If you wish to arrange a carpool with friends – Towsley Canyon/ Rivendale Park (Google coordinates 34.35815928\, -118.55535859) is a good meeting spot (24335 The Old Rd\, Newhall\, CA 91321 ) off I-5. \nLeader: Gary S
