SUMMARY:Mentryville: Pico Canyon Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: It’s great to be planning hikes again after some time away to let a nagging foot injury heal. I’m starting with an old favorite that won’t be too hard for someone who hasn’t hiked in the better part of three months. It’s exciting to be hiking again! \nWe’ll start from Mentryville (a historic SCV site) located at the base of Pico Canyon’s chaparral-dominated slopes\, Mentryville was an 1880’s oil boom town built around its oil well\, Pico No. 4. Named for Charles Mentry\, historic buildings still stand including a grand thirteen-room mansion\, a one-room schoolhouse\, and a barn. Mentryville and Pico No. 4 are registered as California State Historical Landmarks. \nThe beginning of the hike is on an asphalt road which yields to a fire road and untimely a single-track trail. Pico Canyon Trail is another one of the local gems where in a just a short hike you’re miles from the hustle and bustle of modern life and into the wide-open spaces of the back country enjoying nature with great views. We’ll be getting started early to avoid the midday heat! \nDETAILS: \n\nMeet: Mentryville Parking lot where Pico Canyon Road ends at 7:00am\, departure at 7:15 am sharp (June 14).\nDistance: Approximately 6.8 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,272 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including one snack break (brisk pace).\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition (this is not a beginner hike).\nDogs: Must be on leash.\nRestrooms – Yes at the park.\nAdventure Pass: Not required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Get off the beaten path with the local Lyons Ranch and Taylor Loop Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: This hike is the first in a new collection of hikes targeted to explore local (or reasonably local) trails that are not necessarily the “shining stars” of local hikes. These hikes may be on lesser trails\, or almost no trails at all – even game paths or seldom explored areas. These won’t be our prettiest hikes\, or our wettest hikes\, or even our funnest hikes – but you true hikers will find inspiration and natural beauty from these lesser known nearby gems. \nThese hikes won’t be for everyone. If you don’t like trails or paths in poor condition\, this isn’t the hike for you. If you don’t like pushing through thick brush\, this isn’t the hike for you. If you don’t like steep drop-offs on either side of you\, then this may not be the hike for you. If you’re afraid of running into a snake (including rattlesnakes)\, then this probably is not the right trail for you. This is also now tick-season\, so you’ll need to check for ticks when you return. \nThe hike is about 2-1/2 to 3 hours (with break time). The trail will begin with some light elevation gain\, then a good bit of easy\, nearly flat trail\, and then begin to climb. We’ll follow along what I call the “ridge route” – following the ridges with small climbs along the way. We’ll be up high enough for some great views\, with no other people\, follow the ridge line around\, then we’ll start back down the trail. On the way down\, we can divert a bit to see ancient fossils on the side of a hill. \nSound great so far? \nThe positives are that you’ll explore a seldom used area in the Open Space near Towsley Canyon. It’s quiet. We won’t see many (or any) other hikers on this trail. Highlights include beautiful scenery\, a nice view of much of Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass/Hwy 5 off in the distance. There should be grasses and wildflowers of various types\, and parts of the trail will be through thick brush and a negligible trail\, but I’ve hiked it twice now\, and its fine. \nBring your good hiking sole boots/shoes with good tread for this trail\, and hiking poles are HIGHLY recommended. Due to the likely presence of ticks and rattlesnakes\, I’m asking that you NOT bring your dog for its safety. The trail is narrow\, and steep in parts and not a good trail to bring your furry friend! If you have ankle gaiters\, I would recommend them. I’ll be wearing them\, but then I’ll be the first to run into any snakes! \nBecause the trail is not always well defined\, we’ll limit this hike to 15 people\, so if you sign up\, please attend\, or cancel with enough time that someone can sign up in your place. \nChallenges are steep elevation\, overgrown terrain\, and poor maintenance in a few areas. Due to growing grasses\, the trail will not be super visible in spots\, but I’ve done it now twice\, have GPS\, and know the way. \nThere is no water on this hike. There are very few trees – so don’t count on shade. This hike is truly for the adventurous hikers that don’t mind a workout\, and a good view\, and solitude in an area near the very popular Towsley Canyon loop. \nDETAILS:\n• Hike leader volunteer(s): Gary S\n• Meet: Towsley parking lot at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp\n• Distance: Approximately 5.1 miles.\n• Elevation gain: Approximately 1\,000 feet.\n• Time: Approximately 2.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\n• Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n• Dogs: Dogs are NOT recommended for this hike.\n• No Sweeps expected on this hike.\n• Restrooms: None.\n• Adventure Pass: Not Required \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a good pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. There is very little shade\, so wear sun protection and sunscreen. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, rattlesnakes\, etc. on this hike. \nESSENTIAL GEAR:\n• Hiking boots or shoes with good tread and trekking poles.\n• Clothing layers recommended.\n• Snacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets.\n• Hat and sunscreen. \nThe Ten Essentials of Hiking (link) \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3\, Intermediate (see chart below).\nPlease only sign up to attend hikes that are consistent with your ability. SUMMARY:Coquina Mine Trail Loop - Marr Open Space/Simi Valley
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: This is a 6.3-mile trail loop near Simi Valley\, California. Generally considered a moderately challenging route\, it takes an average of 3 hours to complete. Most of the elevation gain occurs between miles 2-3\, some segments are very steep. This is partly on a fire road and trail. Our destination is an historic strip-mining operation that started in 1929 and ceased in 1935. Limestone was mined here for an extremely pure form of Calcium Carbonate (Calcite CaCO3). You’ll find abandoned mining equipment with large boulders of both Limestone and a lot of Fossils as we climb the last hill to the mine. The trail will end at the mining site with the largest mining equipment abandoned there. We’ll return on a loop path (see map below) to return to the trailhead. \nDETAILS:\n• Hike leader volunteer(s): Michele E\n• Meet: Las Llajas Trailhead at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp\n• Distance: Approximately 6.1 miles.\n• Elevation gain: Approximately 1\,053 feet.\n• Time: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\n• Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n• Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.\n• Restrooms: None.\n• Adventure Pass: Not Required \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. The trail loses no time descending the hillsides as we pass through a forest of pine\, alder\, and cedar with great views of Devil’s Canyon and the surrounding mountains. Our trail crosses many small creeks. All the creeks come together so we can enjoy the sound of water dancing over boulders and cascades. We turn around at a backpacker campsite. \nHike Leader Notes: This is a very beautiful hike but the trail is brushy and has many fallen trees. To pass by the fallen trees you will need to climb over\, around\, or crawl under them. With the water comes bugs\, be sure to bring a bug net. Because of the brushy trail ticks could be a concern. On my pre-hike I did a tick check ever hour and found none. SUMMARY:Elsmere Canyon with Extra Credit to Whitney Canyon Falls.
DESCRIPTION:Saturday February 22 2025 – Elsmere – (Visiting the Jack Plant Area\, Eagle Pass\, New Elsmere.\nThen its choose your own adventure: \nOption 1. (6.5 Miles)\nIf interested in getting a little extra cardio you can follow us\,up and over to Whitney Canyon to check out the water falls. That means a bit of uphill. \nOption 2. (5.5 Miles )\nIf you do no wish to do the Extra cardio\, you can sign out and follow the Creek Side Trail back to the Parking lot where we started. \n***** RAIN OR SNOW FALLING AT TRAILHEAD CANCELS THIS HIKE ****** \nDistance: ~ 5.2 miles\, elongated loop hike\, or 6.5 for the extra Credit to Whitney Canyon. \nGain: ~ 1500 ft spread over the hike\, steepest bit at start\, and for the Extra Credit to Whitney Canyon. \nRating: Moderate (due to a section with some reasonable gain over a short distance\, early on). This hike is a next step for Beginners in pretty good condition who want some added Gain and to explore a new local area/ challenge. \nDescription:\nThe beautiful Elsmere Canyon area in Santa Clarita Valley can be explored in several ways. This latest route looks like a “9”. The area has greened back from the Tick Fire\, and ‘cos many of the oaks survived\, the area is still very picturesque. The fire also revealed many old discarded artifacts of oil and gas exploration in the area. \nHike:\nWe start by climbing the steepest part of the hike to the Jack Plant area\, where there is evidence of Elsmere oil production from about 100 years ago. Here is a super write up with lots of old / new photos – look out for some of these items.\nhttps://www.elsmerecanyon.com/oil/jack/jack.htm \nThen\, using the Eagle Pass trail\, we cross SE along cliffs above Elsmere canyon with views into the canyon below\, passing an interesting “peek a boo” rock and views of Los Pinetos Peak high above\, to the East.\nAt the junction at the top of the Elsmere Canyon trail\, we turn South and descend into a more heavily wooded area that finally takes us up a steep service road into the expansive New Elsmere area. All of a sudden – WOW\, we are perched on a grassy overlook with the I-5 and SR-14 interchange below and the SFV laid out before us.\nHere we will have a snacky time\, and try to stay out of the wind. We will maybe spot several more discarded oil and gas artifacts (they tend to be in that area). \nChoose your own Adventure option 1:\nWe return as we entered the area\, this time descending steeply into the most wooded shady riparian area of Elsmere canyon\, with a beautiful seasonal stream (currently flowing). After a short 1 mile alongside the creek\, we are back where we started. \nChoose your own Adventure option 2:\nExtra Credit Cardio. Go with us up yet more uphill and over to Whitney Canyon to check out the waterfall\, then back to where we started. \nMeet your Leader:\nAt the trail head\, the “Park and Ride at the end of Newhall Avenue”\, just east of the SR-14 freeway. (Google calls it “Whitney Canyon Park”/ See Map); meet in the lower Parking Lot (more space). SUMMARY:Devils Chair Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: I really like this trail so am rescheduling the January hike which was unfortunately cancelled due to park fire risk closure. Devil’s Punchbowl is a point where 2 faults collide\, creating upwards jutting vertical walls as high as 300 feet. It is a spectacular setting\, with the high desert spreading out on one side\, and the pine-covered Angeles National Forest on the other. The hike takes you along the mostly shaded rim of the Punchbowl\, to the dramatic Devil’s Chair\, a breathtaking overlook with 360-degree views of the geologic formations. A rainbow of rock surrounds the Devil’s Chair with pink-streaked chalk white cliffs\, undulating tan crags\, chocolate brown slabs\, and green-gray ledges. This\, combined with the green of the mountains and the blue sky\, makes for a memorable visual. \nHikers with extra energy may want to also take the 1mile loop trail\, which drops down into the punchbowl amongst the stunning rock formations. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike Organizer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Devils Chair Trailhead at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Saturday\, Feb 01).\nDistance: Approximately 7.3 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,463 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nAdventure Pass: No.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Santa Paula Canyon to Punchbowls
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: Trail head to the left of St. Thomas Aquinas College entrance.\n· Distance: ~ 10 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1600′\n· Time: Approximately 5 hours hiking including a couple of 15 minute breaks.\n· Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Are OK.\n· Hiking Poles – recommended\n· Restrooms – None.\n· Adventure Pass –Depends were you park. \nHike leader Notes: With the events of the past few weeks lets do a hike in Ojai. Pre-hiked this trail on 01/16/25. Nice water flow but you can keep your feet dry if you try. Our trail starts just pass St. Thomas Aquinas College. There are a few creek crossings and a fair amount of bouldering. Nice views\, waterfall\, and swimming holes\, (to cold for me) Our hike will take us pass Big Cone campgrounds. Down a small section without a trail to the falls. Up a steep section to the top of the falls. Follow the trail pass Cross Camp to the Punch Bowl. There are some sections were the trail is hard to follow. I will go at a slower pace\, 2.5 MPH. Stay with me and we will be alright. The early start is because of the limited parking and how popular this trail is. Carpooling would be best. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. Any guest that you wish to invite should join the Community Hiking Club (CHC) to participate. Depending on water flow\, we may cross streams\, but there aren’t exposures\, bugs or other warnings. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, snakes\, etc. on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather at the start of the hike. \nESSENTIAL GEAR:\nHiking boots and poles.\nClothing layers recommended.\nSnacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets.\nHat and sunscreen. \nAdditional Hiking and Survival Gear Recommendations (link) \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3/4\, Intermediate (see chart below) – mainly for the bouldering and the steep uphill section. \nCHC HIKE RANKING SCALE:\n1. SUMMARY:Kagel Mountain via Dillion Divide
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nThis will be the last hike of 2024! I hope something a little closer to home and a little shorter to mark the end of the year might make it easier to get a larger – maybe celebratory – group together to ring out 2024 might be fun. As usual you can expect beautiful views\, and you might like that this trail is largely a well-maintained fire road. At the peak we will visit a paragliding launch pad where we might see some paragliders in action (if we’re lucky). Please note the trailhead is at Dillion Divide on Little Tujunga Road. For those who are interested\, let’s maybe grab brunch and/or a drink after the hike? \nDETAILS: \n\nHike Organizer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Kagel Mountain Trailhead at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Saturday\, Dec 28).\nDistance: Approximately 6.0 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,269 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.0 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: No.\nAdventure Pass: Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Fish Canyon Narrows
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nExcellent write up of this hike at Hikespeak “Fish Canyon Narrows in the Sierra Polona Mountains” by Seth Snigelske. This is a beautiful area. Bring your camera. Not only is the area beautiful\, but you might see some of the endangered species along the way. Please stay on the trails here and watch where you step during the stream crossings. The hike starts on an abandoned asphalt road\, moves onto a dirt road at the north end of Castaic Lake and follows Fish Canyon. At the old Cienaga campground we split off the main trail for the trail to Piano Box Canyon\, a beautiful single track wooded trail. After Piano Box we will enter the narrows with red/orange cliffs. Our next 1.5 miles will be following a creek bed with 100′ cliffs on both sides. This section of the hike reminds me of Zion National Park. We will take a 15 minute snack and rest stop at the old Roger Camp before heading back to our cars. Be sure to enjoy and take pictures during our hike in the narrows. \nDETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: 37773 Templin Highway at 7:30 am\, departure at 7:45 am sharp (December 14).\n· Distance: ~ 11.5 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1050′\n· Time: Approximately 7 hours hiking including a 15 minute snack break.\n· Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Should skip this hike.\n· Hiking Poles – recommended (for water crossings) I wouldn’t hike the section between piano box and Rodger Camp without hiking poles.\n· Restrooms – None.\n· Adventure Pass – None Required. \nHike leader Notes: Pre-hiked this trail on 11/27/24. The fall colors are great with plenty of water. As we near the end of the year I like to toss our a tough hike. The section between the start and Piano Box is a 4 but the section between Piano Box and Roger Camp will wear you out. I have hiked this section 5 times and it wears me out each time. There is bear scat and Mt Lion tracks on this trail so lets stay together. Lots of poison oak (red this time of year). I will include photos from 11/27 hike. \nAdditional Hiking and Survival Gear Recommendations (link) \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3/4\, Intermediate (see chart below) – mainly for the 3 mile section without trail in the narrows. \nCHC HIKE RANKING SCALE:\n1. SUMMARY:Cooper Canyon Via Cloudburst Summit
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: \nThis is a 7 mile out-and-back hike near Palmdale\, California. Generally considered a moderately challenging route. We will start on the Pacific Crest Trail and hike to Cooper Canyon Falls. As of a few weeks ago there was a lot of water flowing. If you are not comfortable climbing up and down to the base of the falls\, you can enjoy the view from the top. Hiking poles are recommended as we will be crossing over some water. \nOur return route is the Pacific Crest Trail and then transitioning to a trail that parallels the PCT to go back. There will be a bathroom at the end of this trail closer to where we parked. DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: This is probably the last beach hike I’ll plan for the year as cooler weather is likely on the way – yeah! The hike includes great views of the ocean\, mountains and lush grass valleys\, but is a workout. It is rated an intermediate/advanced hike due to the gain (1266 ft. in the first mile and 2181 ft. total)\, so poles and long pants (as some parts of the trail may be overgrown) are recommended for your comfort. Should be FUN! \nDETAILS: \n\nHike Organizer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Parking lot\, Chumash Trail at 8:00 am\, departure at 8:15 am sharp (Oct 19).\nDistance: Approximately 9.2 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,181 feet.\nTime: Approximately 4.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing.
