SUMMARY:Serrano to Sycamore Canyon Loop Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: We start at the Big Sycamore Canyon Campground near sea level\, heading north on the pleasant Sycamore Canyon Trail for 1.5 miles before turning east into the densely wooded Serrano Canyon. The trail follows a seasonal stream with abundant crossings (if there is water which seems unlikely this late in August) and wildlife sightings as we wind through the narrow canyon surrounded by lush vegetation. After gaining elevation through the creek bed\, we emerge into stunning open grasslands set against the dramatic backdrop of Boney Mountain\, climbing approximately 800 feet over the first 4 miles. The trail traverses these rolling meadows\, passing an old aluminum shack where many hikers pause to enjoy the sweeping vistas. From here\, we connect to the Old Boney Trail for a scenic descent back toward Big Sycamore Canyon\, completing the loop on a wide fire road that offers different perspectives of the surrounding wilderness. The final stretch returns us through the campground to our starting point\, having experienced both intimate canyon beauty and expansive mountain views on this fun 9.2-mile adventure. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Sycamore Canyon Trailhead\, Point Mugu State Park\, Malibu\, CA (Sep 13).\nDistance: Approximately 9.2 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,177 feet.\nTime: Approximately 4.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: No dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. August 14-17\, 2025 \nJoin us for a fun and educational beach campout! \nMorro Bay State Park is located 13 miles west of San Luis Obispo\, on the Central Coast about 3.5 hours from Santa Clarita. The park features a lagoon and natural bay habitats\, and a natural history museum. Our CHC geologist\, Mary Bates will be along to teach about the geological features of the area. On the lagoon’s northeastern and eastern edges\, there are saltwater and brackish marshes that support thriving bird populations. Two of the Nine Sisters chain of volcanic peaks leading from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay\, Black Hill & Cerro Cabrillo\, are within park boundaries. Black Hill has a trail winding through dense stands of Monterey Pine trees and offers a panoramic view of the greater Morro Bay area at its summit. Cerro Cabrillo has even more trails to explore all along its base. It is near Montana de Oro\, which also has some beautiful trails. \nThe Community Hiking Club of SCV has reserved a limited number of pre-paid campsites which are available for sharing with other CHC campers. SUMMARY:Devil's Gateway
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: Pothole Trailhead in Angeles National Forest.\n· Distance: ~ 12\,5 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1\, 745\n· Time: Approximately 6-7 hours hiking including a couple of 15 minute breaks.\n· Conditioning: You’ll need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Are but not recommended\n· Hiking Poles – recommended\n· Restrooms – Trailhead.\n· Adventure Pass –Yes. \n\nMeet at trailhead at 07:45 AM leave at 08:00 AM\n\nDescription: A sign marks the trailhead. Plenty of room to park with restroom. The first 2 miles is a road walk where you can enjoy views of the lake and surrounding mountains. After we pass a ranch the road stops and the trail begins. Trail is only 18 inches wide and marked with ribbons at water crossings. Take your time crossing Aqua Blanca creek. Sometimes we will be next to the creek and other times we will be 100 ft or more above. Important to remember the trail is only 18 inches wide. We’ll stop for lunch at Devil’s Gateway then return the way we came. \nHike Leader Notes: This is a beautiful hike but the trail is brushy and narrow\, therefore ticks could be a concern. Poison Oak is an issue I suggest you were pants. Bring plenty of water. On my pre-hike I brought 2 liters of water and 1 liter of electrolyte\, ran out on the road back. Suggest you leave spare shoes and dry socks in your car. A recovery drink would be a good idea. Saw a few deer and bear tracks on the hike. Sometimes the trail is hard to find. Please remember I have hiked this part of the trail many times. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: This is not a speed hike. We’ll need to be careful crossing the many streams and staying on the trail. Do your best to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. Any guest that you wish to invite should join the Community Hiking Club (CHC) to participate. SUMMARY:Get off the beaten path with the local Lyons Ranch and Taylor Loop Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: This hike is the first in a new collection of hikes targeted to explore local (or reasonably local) trails that are not necessarily the “shining stars” of local hikes. These hikes may be on lesser trails\, or almost no trails at all – even game paths or seldom explored areas. These won’t be our prettiest hikes\, or our wettest hikes\, or even our funnest hikes – but you true hikers will find inspiration and natural beauty from these lesser known nearby gems. \nThese hikes won’t be for everyone. If you don’t like trails or paths in poor condition\, this isn’t the hike for you. If you don’t like pushing through thick brush\, this isn’t the hike for you. If you don’t like steep drop-offs on either side of you\, then this may not be the hike for you. If you’re afraid of running into a snake (including rattlesnakes)\, then this probably is not the right trail for you. This is also now tick-season\, so you’ll need to check for ticks when you return. \nThe hike is about 2-1/2 to 3 hours (with break time). The trail will begin with some light elevation gain\, then a good bit of easy\, nearly flat trail\, and then begin to climb. We’ll follow along what I call the “ridge route” – following the ridges with small climbs along the way. We’ll be up high enough for some great views\, with no other people\, follow the ridge line around\, then we’ll start back down the trail. On the way down\, we can divert a bit to see ancient fossils on the side of a hill. \nSound great so far? \nThe positives are that you’ll explore a seldom used area in the Open Space near Towsley Canyon. It’s quiet. We won’t see many (or any) other hikers on this trail. Highlights include beautiful scenery\, a nice view of much of Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass/Hwy 5 off in the distance. There should be grasses and wildflowers of various types\, and parts of the trail will be through thick brush and a negligible trail\, but I’ve hiked it twice now\, and its fine. \nBring your good hiking sole boots/shoes with good tread for this trail\, and hiking poles are HIGHLY recommended. Due to the likely presence of ticks and rattlesnakes\, I’m asking that you NOT bring your dog for its safety. The trail is narrow\, and steep in parts and not a good trail to bring your furry friend! If you have ankle gaiters\, I would recommend them. I’ll be wearing them\, but then I’ll be the first to run into any snakes! \nBecause the trail is not always well defined\, we’ll limit this hike to 15 people\, so if you sign up\, please attend\, or cancel with enough time that someone can sign up in your place. \nChallenges are steep elevation\, overgrown terrain\, and poor maintenance in a few areas. Due to growing grasses\, the trail will not be super visible in spots\, but I’ve done it now twice\, have GPS\, and know the way. \nThere is no water on this hike. There are very few trees – so don’t count on shade. This hike is truly for the adventurous hikers that don’t mind a workout\, and a good view\, and solitude in an area near the very popular Towsley Canyon loop. \nDETAILS:\n• Hike leader volunteer(s): Gary S\n• Meet: Towsley parking lot at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp\n• Distance: Approximately 5.1 miles.\n• Elevation gain: Approximately 1\,000 feet.\n• Time: Approximately 2.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\n• Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n• Dogs: Dogs are NOT recommended for this hike.\n• No Sweeps expected on this hike.\n• Restrooms: None.\n• Adventure Pass: Not Required \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a good pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. There is very little shade\, so wear sun protection and sunscreen. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, rattlesnakes\, etc. on this hike. \nESSENTIAL GEAR:\n• Hiking boots or shoes with good tread and trekking poles.\n• Clothing layers recommended.\n• Snacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets.\n• Hat and sunscreen. \nThe Ten Essentials of Hiking (link) \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3\, Intermediate (see chart below).\nPlease only sign up to attend hikes that are consistent with your ability. Based on your hiking during the last 90 days\, how would you score on the CHC Hike rating scale of one to five assuming a brisk pace?\nCHC HIKE RANKING SCALE: \n\nBeginner: 1-3 miles\, less than 500 feet elevation gain.\nBeginner/Intermediate: 1-7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain.\nIntermediate: 5-10 miles\, 1000-2000 feet elevation gain.\nIntermediate/Advanced: 7-12 miles\, up to 3000 feet elevation gain.\nAdvanced: 10-17 miles\, 3000 feet or more elevation gain.\n\nOn the hiking scale\, this is a 3/4 in a few spots\, and a 1-2 in a few other areas. Unless you are at least good for a 3 or 4 level hike\, you should pass on this one. \nTRAILHEAD LOCATION:\nTowsley Canyon Park\, 24335 The Old Rd\, Newhall\, CA 91321 (off street parking). SUMMARY:Coquina Mine Trail Loop - Marr Open Space/Simi Valley
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: This is a 6.3-mile trail loop near Simi Valley\, California. Generally considered a moderately challenging route\, it takes an average of 3 hours to complete. Most of the elevation gain occurs between miles 2-3\, some segments are very steep. This is partly on a fire road and trail. Our destination is an historic strip-mining operation that started in 1929 and ceased in 1935. Limestone was mined here for an extremely pure form of Calcium Carbonate (Calcite CaCO3). You’ll find abandoned mining equipment with large boulders of both Limestone and a lot of Fossils as we climb the last hill to the mine. The trail will end at the mining site with the largest mining equipment abandoned there. We’ll return on a loop path (see map below) to return to the trailhead. \nDETAILS:\n• Hike leader volunteer(s): Michele E\n• Meet: Las Llajas Trailhead at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp\n• Distance: Approximately 6.1 miles.\n• Elevation gain: Approximately 1\,053 feet.\n• Time: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\n• Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n• Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.\n• Restrooms: None.\n• Adventure Pass: Not Required \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Devils Canyon
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: 200 yards before Chilao Visitor Center on Highway #2\n· Distance: ~ 6.75 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1\, 745\n· Time: Approximately 3-4 hours hiking including a couple of 15 minute breaks.\n· Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Are OK but watch for ticks.\n· Hiking Poles – recommended\n· Restrooms – Trailhead.\n· Adventure Pass –Yes. \nDescription: A prominent sign marks the trailhead. The trail loses no time descending the hillsides as we pass through a forest of pine\, alder\, and cedar with great views of Devil’s Canyon and the surrounding mountains. Our trail crosses many small creeks. All the creeks come together so we can enjoy the sound of water dancing over boulders and cascades. We turn around at a backpacker campsite. \nHike Leader Notes: This is a very beautiful hike but the trail is brushy and has many fallen trees. To pass by the fallen trees you will need to climb over\, around\, or crawl under them. With the water comes bugs\, be sure to bring a bug net. Because of the brushy trail ticks could be a concern. On my pre-hike I did a tick check ever hour and found none. The hike out is mostly uphill but the trail has a nice grade and shouldn’t be a problem. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. Any guest that you wish to invite should join the Community Hiking Club (CHC) to participate. Depending on water flow\, we may cross streams. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, snakes\, etc. on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather at the start of the hike. \nESSENTIAL GEAR:\nHiking boots and poles.\nClothing layers recommended.\nSnacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets.\nHat and sunscreen. \nAdditional Hiking and Survival Gear Recommendations (link) \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3/4\, Intermediate (see chart below) – mainly for the fallen trees and the uphill section. \nCHC HIKE RANKING SCALE:\n1. The trail loses no time descending the hillsides as we pass through a forest of pine alder and cedar with great views of Devil’s Canyon and the surrounding mountains. Our trail crosses many small creeks. All the creeks come together so we can enjoy the sound of water dancing over boulders and cascades. We turn around at a backpacker campsite. \nHike Leader Notes: This is a very beautiful hike but the trail is brushy and has many fallen trees. To pass by the fallen trees you will need to climb over around or crawl under them. With the water comes bugs be sure to bring a bug net. Depending on water flow we may cross streams. As always people may slip and fall encounter poison oak snakes etc. on this hike. SUMMARY:Elsmere Canyon with Extra Credit to Whitney Canyon Falls.
DESCRIPTION:Saturday February 22 2025 – Elsmere – (Visiting the Jack Plant Area\, Eagle Pass\, New Elsmere.\nThen its choose your own adventure: \nOption 1. (6.5 Miles)\nIf interested in getting a little extra cardio you can follow us\,up and over to Whitney Canyon to check out the water falls. That means a bit of uphill. \nOption 2. (5.5 Miles )\nIf you do no wish to do the Extra cardio\, you can sign out and follow the Creek Side Trail back to the Parking lot where we started. \n***** RAIN OR SNOW FALLING AT TRAILHEAD CANCELS THIS HIKE ****** \nDistance: ~ 5.2 miles\, elongated loop hike\, or 6.5 for the extra Credit to Whitney Canyon. \nGain: ~ 1500 ft spread over the hike\, steepest bit at start\, and for the Extra Credit to Whitney Canyon. \nRating: Moderate (due to a section with some reasonable gain over a short distance\, early on). This hike is a next step for Beginners in pretty good condition who want some added Gain and to explore a new local area/ challenge. \nDescription:\nThe beautiful Elsmere Canyon area in Santa Clarita Valley can be explored in several ways. This latest route looks like a “9”. The area has greened back from the Tick Fire\, and ‘cos many of the oaks survived\, the area is still very picturesque. The fire also revealed many old discarded artifacts of oil and gas exploration in the area. \nHike:\nWe start by climbing the steepest part of the hike to the Jack Plant area\, where there is evidence of Elsmere oil production from about 100 years ago. Here is a super write up with lots of old / new photos – look out for some of these items.\nhttps://www.elsmerecanyon.com/oil/jack/jack.htm \nThen\, using the Eagle Pass trail\, we cross SE along cliffs above Elsmere canyon with views into the canyon below\, passing an interesting “peek a boo” rock and views of Los Pinetos Peak high above\, to the East.\nAt the junction at the top of the Elsmere Canyon trail\, we turn South and descend into a more heavily wooded area that finally takes us up a steep service road into the expansive New Elsmere area. All of a sudden – WOW\, we are perched on a grassy overlook with the I-5 and SR-14 interchange below and the SFV laid out before us.\nHere we will have a snacky time\, and try to stay out of the wind. We will maybe spot several more discarded oil and gas artifacts (they tend to be in that area). \nChoose your own Adventure option 1:\nWe return as we entered the area\, this time descending steeply into the most wooded shady riparian area of Elsmere canyon\, with a beautiful seasonal stream (currently flowing). After a short 1 mile alongside the creek\, we are back where we started. \nChoose your own Adventure option 2:\nExtra Credit Cardio. Go with us up yet more uphill and over to Whitney Canyon to check out the waterfall\, then back to where we started. \nMeet your Leader:\nAt the trail head\, the “Park and Ride at the end of Newhall Avenue”\, just east of the SR-14 freeway. (Google calls it “Whitney Canyon Park”/ See Map); meet in the lower Parking Lot (more space). DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES SHOWING. \nMeet at 9:00AM for a 9:15AM SHARP departure. \nBring: A minimum of 2 liters water and some Gatorade\, snack/ sack lunch\, hiking poles (recommended)\, hat\, sunscreen and wear good boots with lots of tread. This hike is a next step for Beginners in pretty good condition who want some added Gain and to explore a new local area/ challenge. \nDescription:\nThe beautiful Elsmere Canyon area in Santa Clarita Valley can be explored in several ways. This latest route looks like a “9”. The area has greened back from the Tick Fire and ‘cos many of the oaks survived the area is still very picturesque. The fire also revealed many old discarded artifacts of oil and gas exploration in the area. \nHike:\nWe start by climbing the steepest part of the hike to the Jack Plant area where there is evidence of Elsmere oil production from about 100 years ago. Here is a super write up with lots of old / new photos – look out for some of these items.\nhttps://www.elsmerecanyon.com/oil/jack/jack.htm \nThen using the Eagle Pass trail we cross SE along cliffs above Elsmere canyon with views into the canyon below passing an interesting “peek a boo” rock and views of Los Pinetos Peak high above to the East.\nAt the junction at the top of the Elsmere Canyon trail we turn South and descend into a more heavily wooded area that finally takes us up a steep service road into the expansive New Elsmere area. All of a sudden – WOW we are perched on a grassy overlook with the I-5 and SR-14 interchange below and the SFV laid out before us.\nHere we will have a snacky time and try to stay out of the wind. We will maybe spot several more discarded oil and gas artifacts (they tend to be in that area). \nChoose your own Adventure option 1:\nWe return as we entered the area this time descending steeply into the most wooded shady riparian area of Elsmere canyon with a beautiful seasonal stream (currently flowing). After a short 1 mile alongside the creek we are back where we started. \nChoose your own Adventure option 2:\nExtra Credit Cardio. Go with us up yet more uphill and over to Whitney Canyon to check out the waterfall then back to where we started. \nMeet your Leader:\nAt the trail head the “Park and Ride at the end of Newhall Avenue” just east of the SR-14 freeway. (Google calls it “Whitney Canyon Park”/ See Map); meet in the lower Parking Lot (more space). DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES SHOWING. \nMeet at 9:00AM for a 9:15AM SHARP departure. \nBring: A minimum of 2 liters water and some Gatorade snack/ sack lunch hiking poles (recommended) hat sunscreen and wear good boots with lots of tread. Bring an extra layer if morning is cold. Also snack spot can be windy. \nAdventure Pass: Not required. \nLeader’s NOTE: There are no bathrooms at this trail-head make plans accordingly. DESCRIPTION:DETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: Trail head to the left of St. Thomas Aquinas College entrance.\n· Distance: ~ 10 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1600′\n· Time: Approximately 5 hours hiking including a couple of 15 minute breaks.\n· Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Are OK.\n· Hiking Poles – recommended\n· Restrooms – None.\n· Adventure Pass –Depends were you park. \nHike leader Notes: With the events of the past few weeks lets do a hike in Ojai. Pre-hiked this trail on 01/16/25. Nice water flow but you can keep your feet dry if you try. Our trail starts just pass St. Thomas Aquinas College. There are a few creek crossings and a fair amount of bouldering. Nice views\, waterfall\, and swimming holes\, (to cold for me) Our hike will take us pass Big Cone campgrounds. Down a small section without a trail to the falls. Up a steep section to the top of the falls. Follow the trail pass Cross Camp to the Punch Bowl. There are some sections were the trail is hard to follow. I will go at a slower pace\, 2.5 MPH. Stay with me and we will be alright. The early start is because of the limited parking and how popular this trail is. Carpooling would be best. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. Any guest that you wish to invite should join the Community Hiking Club (CHC) to participate. Depending on water flow\, we may cross streams\, but there aren’t exposures\, bugs or other warnings. SUMMARY:Devils Chair Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: I really like this trail so am rescheduling the January hike which was unfortunately cancelled due to park fire risk closure. Devil’s Punchbowl is a point where 2 faults collide\, creating upwards jutting vertical walls as high as 300 feet. It is a spectacular setting\, with the high desert spreading out on one side\, and the pine-covered Angeles National Forest on the other. The hike takes you along the mostly shaded rim of the Punchbowl\, to the dramatic Devil’s Chair\, a breathtaking overlook with 360-degree views of the geologic formations. A rainbow of rock surrounds the Devil’s Chair with pink-streaked chalk white cliffs\, undulating tan crags\, chocolate brown slabs\, and green-gray ledges. This\, combined with the green of the mountains and the blue sky\, makes for a memorable visual. \nHikers with extra energy may want to also take the 1mile loop trail\, which drops down into the punchbowl amongst the stunning rock formations. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike Organizer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Devils Chair Trailhead at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Saturday\, Feb 01).\nDistance: Approximately 7.3 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,463 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nAdventure Pass: No.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing.
