The area has recovered after the Sand Fire\, almost 7 years ago\, especially the beautiful forested top half\, so it is definitely worth a re-visit.\nThis hike is all gain to the top (especially the heart thumping first mile) and downhill all the way back. We climb on single track through beautiful chaparral (toyan\, california bay\, yuccas and oaks). Eventually after a mile of oak forest and green ferns\, we emerge on the Santa Clara Truck trail at Wilson Saddle. Depending on weather\, we will snack here or at Antenna. There is also a restroom at the saddle and a picnic table. Most folks will want to go to the peak but if you just want to go back down the trail that is fine too as it is impossible to get lost. As it will be a clear crisp but gusty day the views on all sides should be excellent. \nDirections to Walker Ranch Trailhead from Hwy 14 North\n19388 Placerita Canyon Road (34.378100\, -118.442680):\nAfter the HWY 14 North splits from the 5\, take Exit #3 off the 14. Head EAST for 3.2 miles to the East Walker Ranch Gate lot. (It is 1.7 miles after the Nature Center\, on the right). \nNOTE!!!! PARKING AT WALKER RANCH gate itself is limited. However\, there are turnouts near the gate\, and a lot of roadside parking at the side of the road across from the gate. Read Parking Restriction signs/ park behind white line. Given group size\, please park close to one another\, maximizing space. Leave no valuables showing. WATCH FOR TRAFFIC IF CROSSING! \nMEET YOUR LEADER:\nAt the Walker Ranch Gate at 7:15AM for a 7:30AM SHARP departure up the trail. Allow extra time to sign in and park safely. \nLeader’s Note: Due to group size\, try to use a restroom before arriving. However\, just in case\, there is a porta-pottie at the start of the trail and also a vault toilet at the saddle (1/2 way point). \nBRING:\nSnack to eat at Wilson Saddle\, water (2 L) with some electrolytes\, a hat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and maybe your camera. Windbreaker\, gloves as it is cold windy tomorrow. \nWEAR: Hiking boots/ shoes with good tread; layered clothing and hiking poles if you have them. \nAdventure Pass: Not required \nDogs: OK\, but MUST be kept on a leash and well behaved. Please bring and use dog litter bags. \nHike Leader: Paul H.

SUMMARY:Chumash Trail in Simi to Rocky Peak
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY October 15\, 2021 – Chumash Trail (Simi Valley) to Rocky Peak \n**** RAIN FALLING AT TRAILHEAD CANCELS ALL HIKES **** \nDISTANCE: ~ 8.0 Miles\, Round trip\, Out and Back style \nGAIN: 1400′ Approx. \nDURATION OF HIKE: ~4 hours including a 20 minute break \nRATING: Moderate + \, for gain/ distance \nDescription: This weekend is forecast to be cool and therefore a great opportunity to visit the shadeless Rocky Peak area in the Santa Susana Mountains\, East of Simi Valley. Although relatively short\, the Chumash Trail has a fair amount of gain in the first 2.5 miles until we junction with Rocky Peak Road. Then its fairly flat for the next mile or so to get across to our destination. We did this hike in almost 1 year ago exactly and it has great views on all sides\, especially when cooler. We are doing it at this time of year as it can get very hot here in Summer. \nDirections to the trail head (34.293063\, -118.671186):\nTake the I-5 South to merge into the 405 South. Get off at the 118 freeway towards Simi. Take 118 12.7 miles to exit 29\, Yosemite Avenue. Turn right at end of ramp. Drive 0.4 miles North on Yosemite to Flanagan Drive and turn right. Continue 0.8 miles to the trailhead\, at the end of the road. \nMeet your leader at the trailhead (closest home address: 3191 Flanagan Dr\, Simi Valley\, CA 93063): (34.293063\, -118.671186)\nMeet at 8:00AM for a 8:15AM SHARP departure up the trail. \nNOTE: No bathrooms at trailhead. Best bet is McDonalds / gas station at the top of the Yosemite Ave off ramp when you exit 118 Hwy. \nBring: 2L water / 1L electrolytes\, a hat\, sunscreen\, a snack and hiking poles if you have them. Camera\, hiking shoes/ boots with tread. Just in case it is windy at our snack point near Rocky Peak\, I recommend an extra layer to avoid a chill. \nAdventure Pass: Not required \nDogs: OK\, if on a leash and well-behaved with other dogs / people carrying poles. \nLeader: Paul H

Dianne will meet you here\, and you will caravan to the trail head. \nMeeting Time:\nWe will meet at 7:45AM and leave for the trail head no later than 8:00AM SHARP. The trail head is 4 miles along Forest Road 3N17. Please do not be late as the gate will be locked after we leave the meeting spot. \nBring:\nBoots\, plenty of WATER\, electrolytes\, and snacks\, a sack lunch. TP (there are no bathrooms)\, strong garden GLOVES (suede leather type recommended). If it is hot\, consider bringing sunscreen\, a cooling towel\, sun hat\, bandana. Bring a mask if you cannot maintain social distancing. (A mask will also keep dust off of your face while working) \nDo Not Bring:\nDogs\, as they get bored. Also\, it would not be safe to bring young children (due to sharp tools and trail is narrow). Leave your garden tools at home\, as we could damage them or lose them\, and Dianne will have all of the appropriate tools for trail work. \nThank you for helping bring back this trail\, so we can all enjoy it. \nLeader: Dianne

SUMMARY:Fire Lookout Tower (4\,631') on TOP of Slide Mountain\, Los Padres National Forest
DESCRIPTION:*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes \nSlide Mountain Fire Lookout Tower (4\,631′)\, overlooking Pyramid Lake \nDistance: ~ 12 miles total\, RT – Out and back style \nGain: ~2400′ \nHiking Time: 5.5 hours \nRATING: Strenuous (mainly for the overall Longer Distance and the 1340′ Gain over 2 mile section). Definitely not one for Beginners! You need to be hiking regularly to enjoy this one. \nDescription: Our day starts and ends with a ~ 1.5 mile flat hike (3 of the 12 mile total) along the now abandoned Route 99 (Golden State Highway)\, the predecessor to the 5 Hwy. We follow Piru Creek\, a Native California Fishery and Wild and Scenic River\, until we reach the actual trailhead (a white gate on the left) . From the trailhead\, we catch our first glimpse of the lookout tower\, 2400′ above. \nNext comes a 1340′ “butt kicker”\, as we start from the trailhead up the steepest part of the hike (for ~ 2 miles with some service road switchbacks ). We eventually reach the saddle and can pause to enjoy a panoramic view across the Piru creek area and the Sespe Wilderness to the West. \nAfter catching our breath\, it’s another ~ 2 miles and 1060′ to the peak via a series of shallow switchbacks on the East side of the mountain\, and more on the West side\, gradually approaching the peak. Eventually the tower comes into view and after rounding a bend\, we break out at the summit and an incredible view of Pyramid Lake below.\nThen its time to enjoy a snack/ lunch and the 360 degree view. From here\, if it is clear\, we can see just about every major peak around the Northern LA area. \nWe will be in for a treat as our very own Paul will be at the Tower to greet us and explain what the tower is all about – as he is the Fire Lookout Voulnteer for this day! \nMeet your leader:\nAt 7:45AM in front of the white gate near Frenchman’s Flat Campground\n( 34.616492\, -118.743782 ); we head up the old highway at 8:00AM sharp. \nDirections from SCV:\nGo north on the I-5\, past Castaic and exit at Templin Hwy\, Exit # 183. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp\, go under the freeway to a T junction\, then turn right. Follow this bumpy 2 lane road (Old Hwy 99) for 5 miles until it ends at a white forest service gate where there is parking (this is Frenchman’s Flat Camping area). Display your Adventure Pass in your windshield. There are bathrooms at this trailhead. \nBring:\nA snack/lunch\, water (3 liters is recommended)\, including 1L electrolytes if it is a hot day\, sunscreen\, hat\, hiking poles if you have them. \n!!! Wear layered clothing and pack a windbreaker as it may turn windy / cold at the top. Check weather forecast. Good boots with tread are a given. \nAdventure Pass: YES. Required for parking in the Angeles National Forest. 1/car for those who drive. These can be obtained at any BIG 5 Sporting Goods store; $5 for a day pass\, $30 for a year pass. \nDogs: OK \, if on leash and well behaved. Please keep the distance\, lack of shade\, and your dog’s stamina in mind. \nLeader(s): Chris Stratford

SUMMARY:Fall Colors Photo Hike in Fish Canyon
DESCRIPTION:******* RAIN FALLING AT TRAILHEAD CANCELS ALL HIKES ******* \nRain has been predicted for the week prior to this hike. If it is raining just prior to\, or the day of the hike\, we will have to cancel due to safety issues in the canyon. Please check back before the hike! \nSunday\, December 4\, 2022 – Fall Colors Photo Hike – Fish Canyon\nThe fall colors are gorgeous right now in Fish Canyon and they won’t last too long. You will see green\, yellow\, orange and red. \nThe recent rains caused massive floods in the canyon\, and you will see the damage to the road\, to the lower gate that was moved into the road\, and lots of debris. Water was about 8′ high in some spots. As an example of how ferocious the water was\, one of the bathrooms was undermined and traveled down the river about 50 feet\, until it fell into a hole\, and remained there. Amazingly enough\, the water crossings are dry now\, so no worries about getting wet.\nHiking poles are recommended due to the fact that there is more debris in and around the trail. \nWe will NOT be going to Piano Box on this trip. Instead\, we will continue past Cienega Campground UP towards Warm Springs\, about a mile or so past Cienega. \nBring: Poles\, Camera\, snack and anything else you might need along the trail. \nThank You \nDistance: ~ 8-10 Miles total (out and back style) \nGain: ~ 800′ \nHiking Time: ~ 5 hours \nRating: Moderate (mainly for an uphill at the end along the road\, returning to trailhead). \nNote – You need to be in good general condition to enjoy this hike. \nDescription:\nThis is a beautiful area containing 37 types of endangered species. It is prime yellow-legged frog and Arroyo Toad Habitat. Bring your camera. Not only is the area beautiful\, but you might see some of the endangered species along the way. Please stay on the trails here\, and watch where you step during the stream crossings. \nThe hike starts on an abandoned asphalt road\, moves onto a dirt road at the north end of Castaic Lake and follows Fish Canyon. The only major hill is the asphalt road coming back up to the cars\, the trail is fairly level the rest of the way. The trail through Fish Canyon is interspersed with portions of the old cement road from the 1930s. \nThen we split off the main trail for the trail to Piano Box Canyon\, a beautiful single track wooded trail. We will snack and rest in Piano box and have ample time to enjoy the canyon walls of reddish/orange rock before returning. \nMeet your leader at the Trail Head (Trailhead address below) or put this # into Google Maps (34.6022\, -118.6707):\n37773 Templin Highway\, Angeles National Forest\, Castaic\, CA 91384 \nDirections to Trail head (about 30 mins) from SCV / SFV areas:\nTake the I-5 Freeway North from Santa Clarita. About 6 miles north of Lake Hughes/Castaic\, exit at Templin Highway EAST. Turn right at bottom of FWY off ramp.\nFollow Templin Hwy East (a curvy road) straight (i.e. do not turn off it). Drive about 10 mins max\, all the way until it ends at a closed white gate/ concrete barrier. You can park along the road beside it\, leave nothing showing in your vehicle. \nMeeting Time:\nMeet at the white gate at the trail head at 8:00AM for an 8:15AM SHARP departure down the trail.\nNote: No Adventure Pass needed and No bathrooms at trailhead. \nBring:\nLunch/ snack\, lots of water (2 – 3 liters)\, and your camera. \nWear:\nLayered clothing\, hat\, sunscreen\, shoes with good tread\, long pants in case there is poison oak or ticks about. \nThere are 24 water crossings\, however\, unless there has been recent heavy rain\, we would not expect much water flowing in the creek. \nDogs: Ok\, but must be kept on a leash and well behaved around other dogs/ people with poles.\nNote: This is a SLOWER moving hike since we will all take the time to photograph the trees and flood damage. \nLeader: Dianne

SUMMARY:Kick off the 2023 with a Hike! East Cyn or go on to Mission Peak O/B
DESCRIPTION:January 1\, 2023 – Shorter or Longer Local Conditioning Hike: East Canyon to its end or go on a bit longer to Mission Peak (both are Out and Back) \nDISTANCE/ GAIN:\nBoth hikes are Out and Back (O/B) style; length depends on whether you do the second part (an extra ~3 miles round trip). \nNOTE: If you just want to do the “Shorter” hike\, you will go to the end of East Canyon and check out with the leader and then head back the same way you arrived\, back down East Canyon to the parking lot. It is straightforward but you will also be able to follow the arrows (we will have left) at any turns as you go back to the trail head. \n\n“Shorter”: East Canyon to the top ~ 6 mile Round trip total with 1320′ gain. Views of SFV\, SCV and Oat Mountain\, returning to East canyon trail head. Fair warning – this hike starts steeply but does get much easier later. This hike should finish by ~10.30 AM\n“Longer”: Same as above but with an add-on. ~ 9 miles Round Trip hike with 1635′ gain. At the top of East Canyon we turn South on the Sunshine Canyon Motorway for an out and back to Mission Peak (~3 extra miles total). Views of SFV\, the Van Norman Reservoir\, Balboa Blvd\, the West side of San Gabriels and East side of the Santa Susana Mountains off to the West.\n\nRATING:\nHike #1 – Moderate –\nHike #2 – Moderate + (mainly for distance).\nBoth hikes are not for beginners – you need to be in good physical condition to complete them (due to some decent gain near the start\, over a short distance). \nDESCRIPTION:\nLooks like it may be cooler than earlier in the week (check forecast)\, so it is a good time to visit the rolling hills\, views and quiet oak woodlands of the 480-acre Michael D. Antonovich Open Space.\nThis area straddles the ridgeline of the Santa Susana Mountains and there may be some mist at start. It features mixed woodlands of big cone Douglas-fir\, big leaf maple\, coast live oak\, California black walnut\, native ash\, and valley oak. Chances are high we will meet almost no one else for most of the hike. \nMEET: Your leader at the East Canyon Trail Head at 8:00AM for a 8:15AM SHARP departure up the canyon. \nDIRECTIONS: To East canyon Trail Head ( 34.35065\, -118.54585):\nExit the I-5 freeway if going North\, at Calgrove Blvd. Turn West and follow Calgrove around a curve and through one signal. You are now on the Old Road. Pass Towsley Cyn on the right; keep going along the road South for 0.8 miles\, Look for cars and trailhead on the right. Park on the Road (if you do not want to pay for parking). \nBRING: 2 liters water\, snack/lunch\, hiking poles. Good shoes with tead. If the day is cool\, bring an extra layer\, especially if going to Mission Peak\, as it usually is windy. \nADVENTURE PASS: Not required \nDOGS: Ok\, if on a leash and well-behaved with other dogs / people. \nLEADER(s): Paul Huskey

SUMMARY:Fire Lookout Tower - Slide Mountain

It is in a geologically beautiful area\, only open at this time of year.\nOur loop route is not on a fixed trail but it does not include bouldering or very difficult topography. The hike begins with a steep climb (luckily when the day is coolest) up and over the first of three ridges. These afford some fabulous views of the entire area. After we climb down the 3rd ridge\, we lunch at the East end of Nightmare Gulch (say 30 mins). \nThe rest of the hike takes us down through the Gulch – high walls and spectacular sandstone rock formations\, mainly flat but with lots of off shoots\, so you need to stay with us. At the exit from the Gulch\, we cross an open area of desert for a final uphill climb to the parking area. There will be some variety in hiker ability and speed and long stretches between waypoints\, so expect to not feel crowded. \nSCV Caravan / Friends Carpool Meeting Spot – in NORTH Santa Clarita Valley (SCV):\nWe do not organize carpools however\, if you want to carpool\, we suggest you message hikers/ close friends who you already know well and trust from a COVID perspective. A convenient place to meet on the way is:\nOutside STARBUCKS (16548 Soledad Canyon Rd\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387)\, in the SaAND CANYON/ Soledad Canyon Road junction VONs strip mall parking lot\, off the 14 Hwy.\nTHIS IS NOT A CHC ORGANIZED CARPOOL \n!!! 7:15AM SHARP CARAVAN departure to the trailhead (no exceptions). The total drive is ~ 85 miles one way\, ~ 90 minutes. \nMojave (alternate) Caravan Meeting place (For convenience of those who live in Lancaster\, Antelope Valley\, etc.): If you want to drive to the trailhead with “the gang”\, we will be stopping briefly for a potty break/ McMuffin at the McDonalds on the corner of 14 HWY at Mojave – Barstow Hwy at 8:00AM. We leave from McD’s at ~8:15AM\, it is only 26.5miles from the trailhead. \nMEET LEADER AT TRAILHEAD ( 35.377332\, -117.980609 ):\nMeet at the Red Rock North Parking Lot (dirt pad on East side of Hwy 14)\, ¾ mile north of where Red Rock Canyon S.P. / Abbot Road\, joins Hwy 14 . \n!!!!! Be at the trailhead at 9:00AM\, so we can depart up the trail at 9:15AM SHARP.\nWe hope to be back at the trailhead by 3:45PM to return to Santa Clarita before 5:30PM. \nWEAR: Expect cold windy weather; hike will take us to 3\,000 ft. Likely to be colder and windy regardless. Dress in layers – you can always remove something if you get too hot. You can always leave a “just in case” jacket in your car\, if the weather looks better than expected.\nWe recommend winter hat/ scarf\, GLOVES!!\, a WINDPROOF outer layer\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, hiking shoes/ boots with thread. \nFORECAST: Check it and we will also provide an updated forecast in Comments\, closer to hike day. \nBRING: Lunch / snack\, maybe a thermos of coffee\, lots of water (2+ liters)\, CAMERA\, hiking poles highly recommended for those ridges. \nLeaders’ Notes: No bathrooms at trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not required. \nDogs and Kids: Not encouraged. SUMMARY:Santa Barbara Beach Walk
DESCRIPTION:Our first stop\, meet me at 9:45AM just outside the Santa Barbara Museum Sea Center\n211 Stearn’s Wharf\, Santa Barbara \nDrive onto Stearn’s Wharf\, and the Sea Center is to your left. Public parking on Stearns Wharf is free for the first 90 minutes with ticket validation. Admission is $13/adult. ($11/senior) \nOur second stop\,meet me at NOON at the park benches by the stream at Arroyo Burro Beach next to the Boathouse 2981 Cliff Drive\, Santa Barbara For a pretty drive without freeway\, you may follow me 4.3 miles from Stearns Wharf\, left along Shoreline Drive to Cliff Drive\, to the beach. \nAfter a briefing about the geology and geography of what you’ll see\, (and a bathroom stop)\, we will walk uphill on a well-worn trail up onto the mesa\, along a cliff\, (awesome views) and down 241 steps onto the beach – a total of about 2.5 miles RT. \nExertion level is mild to moderate and not wheelchair accessible. \nENJOY THE TIDEPOOLS! \nEnjoying the beach may best be done with a willingness to walk barefoot into the water\, looking at tide pools\, picking up rocks\, and not freaking out about natural oil spots on the bottoms of your feet or shoes. This is a natural phenomenon in this part of our California coast. Vaseline helps remove oil from skin. Bring any trash out with you. Bring a bag to carry shoes back\, in case you wish to go barefoot on the beach. You will be finished by 2 or 3pm. \nTHEN you can go out to lunch and enjoy Santa Barbara at a leisurely pace. Sunset will be 5:26pm.
