SUMMARY:Chumash Trail in Simi to Rocky Peak
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY October 15\, 2021 – Chumash Trail (Simi Valley) to Rocky Peak \n**** RAIN FALLING AT TRAILHEAD CANCELS ALL HIKES **** \nDISTANCE: ~ 8.0 Miles\, Round trip\, Out and Back style \nGAIN: 1400′ Approx. \nDURATION OF HIKE: ~4 hours including a 20 minute break \nRATING: Moderate + \, for gain/ distance \nDescription: This weekend is forecast to be cool and therefore a great opportunity to visit the shadeless Rocky Peak area in the Santa Susana Mountains\, East of Simi Valley. Although relatively short\, the Chumash Trail has a fair amount of gain in the first 2.5 miles until we junction with Rocky Peak Road. Then its fairly flat for the next mile or so to get across to our destination. We did this hike in almost 1 year ago exactly and it has great views on all sides\, especially when cooler. We are doing it at this time of year as it can get very hot here in Summer. \nDirections to the trail head (34.293063\, -118.671186):\nTake the I-5 South to merge into the 405 South. Get off at the 118 freeway towards Simi. Take 118 12.7 miles to exit 29\, Yosemite Avenue. Turn right at end of ramp. Drive 0.4 miles North on Yosemite to Flanagan Drive and turn right. Continue 0.8 miles to the trailhead\, at the end of the road. \nMeet your leader at the trailhead (closest home address: 3191 Flanagan Dr\, Simi Valley\, CA 93063): (34.293063\, -118.671186)\nMeet at 8:00AM for a 8:15AM SHARP departure up the trail. \nNOTE: No bathrooms at trailhead. Best bet is McDonalds / gas station at the top of the Yosemite Ave off ramp when you exit 118 Hwy. \nBring: 2L water / 1L electrolytes\, a hat\, sunscreen\, a snack and hiking poles if you have them. Camera\, hiking shoes/ boots with tread. Just in case it is windy at our snack point near Rocky Peak\, I recommend an extra layer to avoid a chill. \nAdventure Pass: Not required \nDogs: OK\, if on a leash and well-behaved with other dogs / people carrying poles. \nLeader: Paul H

Note: Drive time from SCV is ~1 hour 15mins. \nDISTANCE: ~ 10.4 mile Round Trip total\, out and back style \nGAIN/ LOSS: ~ 1580′ total (1000′ in the first 2.7 miles) \nRATING: Moderate ++ (NOTE: this is NOT a beginners hike\, the rating is due to longer distance and 1000′ gain early in hike). You need to be hiking regularly to enjoy this hike. \nHIKE DURATION: ~ 4.5 hours hike + 0.5 hour snack time\nHike should end by ~ 1:00 PM\, back in SCV 2:45PM \nTRAIL HEAD: Meet your leader at the Ray Miller Trailhead (rear of parking lot) in La Jolla Canyon Parking lot (Google coordinates 34.0837567\, -119.0358925). Entrance to Parfking Lot is across from La Jolla beach: \nDESCRIPTION:\nWe start at sea level at the back of the La Jolla Canyon Group Camping Parking Area to head up the Ray Miller Backbone Trail. The trail winds back and forth across the hillside providing spectacular views of Pacific Coast Highway and the Pacific Ocean. We climb almost 1000′ in the first 2.7 miles then it levels off for 1.9 miles as we traverse the ridge\, joining the Overlook trail\, revealing great views into Sycamore Canyon and the Boney Mountain range off to the South East. The final 0.7 miles is a gradual descent along the Loop trail into the valley below\, turning into the La Jolla Valley walk-in campground. Here we take a break and grab a snack before our return to the trailhead along the same route. \nDIRECTIONS from Santa Clarita to the La Jolla Canyon trailhead:\nTake Newhall Ranch road West until you go over the 5 Freeway and becomes CA-126\, heading West toward Ventura.\nFollow CA-126 W\, 34.4 miles\, then use Exit 5 from CA-126 W to merge on to CA-118 East\, toward Saticoy. Continue until the road T’s . Turn right on to Santa Clara Ave\, which becomes Rice Ave and eventually merges into Route 1 (PCH)\, turning South along the coast.\nStay on PCH\, passing Point Mugu Naval base on the right\, beside the ocean. After passing the big Point Mugu Rock\, La Jolla Canyon parking entrance is 1.4 miles further\, on the left. Be alert\, 1/4 mile sooner and watch traffic as you turn in. \nPARKING: There are 2 options – park in the La Jolla Canyon Parking lot and pay a $12/ day fee with a credit card to a machine in the lot. Alternatively\, you may be able to find free parking out on the PCH\, on either side of the entrance (!! obey signs and park behind arrows/ inside whiteline\, or risk a hefty ticket!!). \nBRING: Hiking boots with good tread\, Poles if you have them\, lunch/ snacks\, at least 2 – 3 liters of water plus some electrolytes\, SUN SCREEN/ lip balm. \nBATHROOMS/ ADVENTURE PASS: There are bathrooms at the campground / trailhead. DESCRIPTION:Sunday October 02\, 2022 : Los Pinetos Trial to Wilson Saddle\, or on to Los Pinetos Peak (the Antennas)\, Both are Out and Back \n** IF RAIN IS FALLING AT TRAILHEAD THIS HIKE WILL BE CANCELED ** \nHike: Meet at 7:15 AM to head up trail at 7:30 AM (details below) \nDISTANCE:\n7 miles Total\, Out and Back style (i.e. the same way) to saddlel\n9 miles Total\, Out and Back style (i.e. the same way) to Los Pinetos Peak (the Antennas) \nGAIN: 1800′ \nRATING: Moderate + (need some hiking experience) \nDURATION (Approx.): ~ 3.5 hours hiking \nDESCRIPTION:\nThis hike is a good standby hike. The area has recovered after the Sand Fire\, almost 7 years ago\, especially the beautiful forested top half\, so it is definitely worth a re-visit.\nThis hike is all gain to the top (especially the heart thumping first mile) and downhill all the way back. We climb on single track through beautiful chaparral (toyan\, california bay\, yuccas and oaks). Eventually after a mile of oak forest and green ferns\, we emerge on the Santa Clara Truck trail at Wilson Saddle. Depending on weather\, we will snack here or at Antenna. There is also a restroom at the saddle and a picnic table. Most folks will want to go to the peak but if you just want to go back down the trail that is fine too as it is impossible to get lost. As it will be a clear crisp but gusty day the views on all sides should be excellent. \nDirections to Walker Ranch Trailhead from Hwy 14 North\n19388 Placerita Canyon Road (34.378100\, -118.442680):\nAfter the HWY 14 North splits from the 5\, take Exit #3 off the 14. Head EAST for 3.2 miles to the East Walker Ranch Gate lot. (It is 1.7 miles after the Nature Center\, on the right). \nNOTE!!!! PARKING AT WALKER RANCH gate itself is limited. However\, there are turnouts near the gate\, and a lot of roadside parking at the side of the road across from the gate. Read Parking Restriction signs/ park behind white line. Given group size\, please park close to one another\, maximizing space. Leave no valuables showing. WATCH FOR TRAFFIC IF CROSSING! \nMEET YOUR LEADER:\nAt the Walker Ranch Gate at 7:15AM for a 7:30AM SHARP departure up the trail. Allow extra time to sign in and park safely. \nLeader’s Note: Due to group size\, try to use a restroom before arriving. However\, just in case\, there is a porta-pottie at the start of the trail and also a vault toilet at the saddle (1/2 way point). \nBRING:\nSnack to eat at Wilson Saddle\, water (2 L) with some electrolytes\, a hat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and maybe your camera. SUMMARY:Short/ Long Local Hikes: Weldon Cyn to East Cyn; or add on Mission Peak
DESCRIPTION:Shorter or Longer Local Hikes: Weldon Canyon to the junction with East Canyon\, or go longer out to Mission Peak and back. \nDistance/ Gain:\nBoth hikes are Out and Back (O/B) style; length depends on whether you do the second part (an extra ~3.7 miles round trip). \nNOTE: If you just want to do the “Shorter” hike\, once we hit East Canyon\, you will check out with the leaders and then head back the same way you arrived\, back down to Weldon Canyon. It is straightforward but you will also be able to follow the arrows (we will have left) to the trail head. \n\n\n“Shorter”: Weldon to the East Canyon junction ~ 5.5 mile Round trip total with 900′ gain. Views of SFV\, SCV and Oat Mountain\, returning to Weldon trail head. Fair warning – this hike starts steeply but does get much easier later. This hike should finish by 11.15 AM \n\n\n“Longer”: Same as above but ~ 9.2 mile Round Trip hike with 1600′ gain. At the East Canyon junction you continue to the top of East canyon\, where you turn South on the Sunshine Canyon Motorway for an out and back to Mission Peak. 3.7 extra miles. Views of SFV\, the Van Norman Reservoir\, Balboa Blvd\, the West side of San Gabriels and East side of the Santa Susana Mountains off to the West. Return the same way to Weldon trail head. This hike should finish by 12.30 PM \n\n\nRating:\nHike #1 – Easy+ / Moderate\nHike #2 – Moderate + (mainly for distance).\nBoth hikes are not for beginners – you need to be in good physical condition to complete them\, due to some decent gain near the start\, over a short distance. \nDescription: Visit the rolling hills\, views and quiet oak woodlands of the 480-acre Michael D. Antonovich Open Space. The area straddles the ridgeline of the Santa Susana Mountains and features mixed woodlands of big cone Douglas-fir\, big leaf maple\, coast live oak\, California black walnut\, native ash\, and valley oak. Chances are high we will meet almost no one else for most of the hike. \nMeet your leader: At the Weldon Canyon Trail Head at 7:45 AM for a 8:00 AM SHARP departure up the canyon. Park off the road near the brown Weldon Canyon sign. \nDirections to Weldon Canyon Trail Head (22925 Coltrane Avenue\, Newhall (34.34103\, -118.52595):\nExit the I-5 freeway if going North\, at Calgrove Blvd. Turn West and follow Calgrove around a curve and through one signal. You are now on the Old Road. Pass Towsley Cyn on the right; keep going along the road South and under the 5 FWY until you see a bridge on right that goes over the 5 FWY (Weldon Canyon Rd. to Coltrane Avenue). Follow it\, as if going to the Oak Tree Gun Club\, but stop near the brown Weldon Cyn sign on the left. \nBring: Lots of water\, snack/lunch\, hiking poles and a camera. Good shoes with tread are a must going up Weldon. SUMMARY:Sawmill the hard way - Cerro Noroeste to Grouse and Sawmill
DESCRIPTION:Meetup Time : 8:30 A.M. \nDISTANCE: 7 miles – out and back style.\nGAIN: 1700′ \nRATED: Not for beginners. This one is Moderate / Moderate +++ mainly for thin air (low oxygen) impact and long steeper stretches. \nHIKE DURATION: About 4 1/2 hours (including a 20-minute snack break) \nDESCRIPTION:\nThis 7-mile hike from the 8100 ft. trail head takes you to 2 summits (first Grouse 8573ft and then Sawmill Mountain 8818 ft). The trail is mostly in the forest but a lot of up hill. We will have a 20-minute Snack and recovery break at Grouse\, then on to Sawmill for the Peek photo \, then back to the trail head ( Down and up both ways). Moderate hikers should be easily able to complete all two summits.\nBear in mind\, this entire “out and back” trail is very well marked/ easy to follow\, so you can safely turn around at ANY stage\, depending on your ability/ stamina. Also\, we will have signposted the route with our popular orange chalk arrows to help you 🙂 \nBRING:\nStrong shoes\, dress in layers (expecting 75 F at start). Poles are useful\, if you have them; snack lunch; a hat; !!sunscreen!!\, bug spray / bug net (in case). 3 liters of liquids (2L water/ 1 liter electrolytes\, i.e. Gatorade)\, and your camera. \nADVENTURE PASS:\nNot required. See bathroom note below. \nMEET : (Google Coordinates 34.82860\, -119.20190)\nYour leader at the West Tumamait Trailhead 8:30 AM \, located along Cerro Noroeste Road near the summit of Cerro Noroeste. The group will head out at 8:40 Sharp. Trailhead parking is along the shoulder of the road\, allow 1 ½ hours to get to trailhead from Santa Clarita. \nDIRECTIONS: From Santa Clarita Valley: Take I-5 North ~ 40 miles to the Frazier Park off ramp. Exit\, turn left under highway. Go West on the Frazier Park Road for about 12 miles passing Lockhart Valley Road (on the left) until you see signs for Mt. Pinos (Do not go to Mt Pinos). Slight right onto Forest Rte 9N05 (this will route you through Pine Mountain Club). Continue onto Forest Hwy 95/Mil Potrero Hwy for about 5 ½ miles. Turn left onto Cerro Noroeste Rd/Forest Rte 9N25 and follow the road up 6.9 miles till you see the West Tumamait Trailhead on the right. The parking is limited by the trail head\, however if we use Angle parking we should be able to maximize the limited space. \nNOTE: There are no operational Porta Potty toilets at trailhead. We recommend a quick stop as you exit the 5 Fwy at the Truck stop / gas station on the left\, before heading toward Frazier Park.

Note: Drive time from SCV is ~1 hour 15mins. \nDISTANCE: ~ 10.4 mile Round Trip total\, out and back style \nGAIN/ LOSS: ~ 1580′ total (1000′ in the first 2.7 miles) \nRATING: Moderate ++ (NOTE: this is NOT a beginners hike\, the rating is due to longer distance and 1000′ gain early in hike). You need to be hiking regularly to enjoy this hike. \nHIKE DURATION: ~ 4.5 hours hike + 0.5 hour snack time\nHike should end by ~ 1:00 PM\, back in SCV 2:45PM \nTRAIL HEAD: Meet your leader at the Ray Miller Trailhead (rear of parking lot) in La Jolla Canyon Parking lot (Google coordinates 34.0837567\, -119.0358925). Entrance to Parfking Lot is across from La Jolla beach: \nDESCRIPTION:\nWe start at sea level at the back of the La Jolla Canyon Group Camping Parking Area to head up the Ray Miller Backbone Trail. The trail winds back and forth across the hillside providing spectacular views of Pacific Coast Highway and the Pacific Ocean. SUMMARY:Local Beginners/ Easy Hike - Whitney Canyon to the Cascades
DESCRIPTION:Local Beginner’s / Easy Hike!! Whitney Canyon to the cascades \nDistance: ~ 4.5 miles total\, out and back. \nGain: Almost none \nRated: Easy\, suitable for beginners and families. \nTime: About 2.5 hours \nDescription: (GPS Co-ords: 34.364404\, -118.500829 )\nA beautiful mostly flat 4.5 mile hike\, along a river bed with shady oak trees along most of the route. This is such a pleasant and easy “out and back” hike that you do not have to leave the kids or dog at home either. \nYour hike starts along a dirt road\, but after about a half mile\, becomes a single track – all the way to the “Cascades” – the site of a nice little waterfall (not flowing at this time of year). Expect to see squirrels\, deer\, woodpeckers and other birds that like this riparian habitat. We’ve also once seen a black bear! \nBring: This hike is short but you might like to bring a small snack to eat at the waterfall or along the way\, water (~1 liter)\, sun protection/hat. \nDogs: Allowed\, if on a leash and well-behaved around other dogs and people. (The MRCA fine\, if your dog is caught off-leash is $265.) \nMeeting place: \nMeet at the Whitney Canyon trailhead (by the gate\, GPS Co-ords: 34.364404\, -118.500829 ) at 7:15 AM for an 7:30AM SHARP departure down the trail. We should be back by about 9:30AM before the day heats up. \nDirections: From Valencia\, take the I-5 Freeway south ; from San Fernando Valley\, take 1-5 freeway North. Get on the SR-14 North and be ready to take the first Exit – Newhall Avenue. Take a right at the fork on the off-ramp. and when you reach the stop sign\, turn right. This will lead you quickly into the Park and Ride that is adjacent to SR-14. Parking is FREE. Park in the dirt lot to the left of the asphalt Park and Ride. \nNOTE: Park in the dirt/gravel overflow lot below to the left of the park and ride. SUMMARY:Pacific Crest Trail to Martindale Ridge - Views of Sierra Pelona\, Mojave etc.
DESCRIPTION:Hike part of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) South to Martindale Ridge and enjoy views of the Sierra Pelona/ Aqua Dulce/ Mojave/ Lancaster etc. \nDISTANCE: ~ 6.5 Miles\, Round trip\, Out and Back style \nGAIN: 1300′ Approx. \nDURATION OF HIKE: 3.0 hours including a 20 minute break \nRATING: Moderate + \, for gain \nDESCRIPTION:\nThis hike is another one of our local favorites\, close to suburbia but feels miles away. The hike is entirely on the well maintained Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)\, that goes from Mexico to Canada. We will start at 3320′ and enjoy mainly a gentle gain that PCT is known for\, climbing through luscious chaparral of manzanita\, mountain mahogany and oak. There will be a few short steeper sections.\nAlong the way\, we hope to enjoy views of the Bouquet Reservoir\, and Jupiter and Grass Mountains. We will visit Bear Spring and eventually emerge on Martindale Ridge at 4500′\, after 3.2 miles. From here\, if it is clear\, we take in views in all directions (i.e. Mojavi\, Lancaster and the Sierra Pelona area (Aqua Dulce/ Acton etc.) spread out below. After a quick snack\, we head back down the PCT for a total of 6.5 miles. \nMEET: At Trailhead at 7:30AM\, to start heading up the trail at 7:45AM SHARP. See directions below \nDIRECTIONS to trailhead: Address = 37862 Bouquet Canyon Road\, Santa Clarita\, CA. (Google : 34.583655\, -118.321585 is best)\nAbout 35 minutes up Bouquet Canyon from Santa Clarita. \nFrom the I-5 Freeway\, heading North (toward Castaic):\nExit at Newhall Ranch Road (Route 126). After heading up the off ramp\, turn East (right) along Newhall Ranch Road\, toward Valencia. Go 4.4 miles on the Newhall Ranch to the intersection with Bouquet Canyon. \nTurn left at the Bouquet Cyn./ Newhall Ranch light and drive 17 miles up Bouquet Canyon until you see Bouquet Reservoir on the left\, followed shortly by Spunky Canyon Road on the left also. Stay on Bouquet Canyon. Drive another 2.2 miles and park at a large turnout on the right (with Pacific Crest Trail markers on either side of the road). \nFrom Antelope Valley/ North of Santa Clarita:\nIf you are driving from Lancaster\, take Elizabeth Lake Road to Bouquet Canyon Road (just before Leona Valley). DESCRIPTION:Saturday August 6\, 2022 – Hike from the Chilao Visitors Center to Mt. Hillyer (6\,200′) and back by the Silver Mocassin Trail\nStart Hike: Meet at Chilao Visitor’s Center (Trailhead) at 7:45AM\, details below. \nDistance: 7.3 miles\, Round trip – Lollipop style loop hike\nGain: ~ 1\,234′ \nRating: Moderate + (i.e. not one for Beginners\, you need to be in good general condition to enjoy this hike). \nDescription:\nThis hike has some really nice views and being at a higher elevation it should be cooler. We start the hike at the Chilao Visitor Center parking lot\, a short distance from the trail head on part of the Silver Moccasin Trail surrounded by a pine and cedar forest. \nAt Horse Flats fork we turn left\, passing the Horse Flats campground before climbing on a well traveled trail up a gentle slope and a few switchbacks to reach the top of Mt. Hillyer. A century ago this was bandido country (the notorious Tiburcio Vasquez and his gang of horse thieves utilized Chilao and Horse Flats when they were not hanging out at Vasquez rocks\, near Acton). \nThe great boulders we will pass served as a fortress for the bandits and today these same boulders serve as a great location for rock climbers and make for some very cool photos. \nFrom the round top of Mt. Hillyer (6\,200′)\, we will be rewarded with nice views that the bandits probably used to their advantage. We will follow the ridge NE to the Rosenita Saddle trailhead. Here we turn right on a paved road and follow it for a bit\, turning off back towards the Horse Flats campground. At the back of the campsite we will hook-up with the Silver Moccasin Trail again heading back to the Chilao Visitor center. \nNote: The highway to the trailhead is twisty after passing Upper Tujunga on Hwy 2. If you are susceptible to carsickness\, plan accordingly. \nDirections to Chilao Visitor Center (34.326805\, -118.006125) :\nVia 14 FWY North:\nTake 14 FWY North to Exit 30 for Angeles Forest Hwy\, Stay on Angeles Forest HWY N4 for 16 miles to Upper Big Tujunga\, sharp turn to the left. Head 9 miles on Upper Big T all the way to the intersection with 2 Angeles Crest Hwy. Turn left (East) and follow 2 Hwy for 8 miles\, making a left turn into the Chilao Visitor Center (it’s just past the parking lot for Devils Canyon trail head). \nAlternative Route\, Via the 210 FWY:\nExit at Angeles Crest HWY 2 NORTH (Exit #20). Follow the 2 towards the mountains for ~ 27 miles\, making a left turn into the Chilao Visitor Center (it is just past the parking lot for Devils Canyon trail head). \nMeet your Leader: At the Chilao Visitor Center (34.326805\, -118.006125)\nPark in the Visitor’s Center parking lot at ~ 7:45AM. We will leave the lot to depart up the trail at 8:00AM SHARP. \nBring: Lots of liquids for hydrating (2L water + 1L Electrolytes like Gatorade)\, a hat\, sunscreen\, a snack and hiking poles if you have them. Good shoes with tread are a must. \nAdventure Pass: Yes\, 1/car. Available at Acton or any other Ranger Station\, the Little Tujunga Ranger station\, REI Nothridge\, Big 5 Sporting Goods ($5 a day/ $30 a year). \nDogs: OK\, if on a leash and well-behaved with other dogs / people carrying poles.
