SUMMARY:Trail Canyon Falls Trail - Big Tujunja Canyon
DESCRIPTION:*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes. \nMeetup Time: 7:30 A.M. (We hit the trail promptly at 7:45) \nPARKING/CARPOOLING – There is parking on the side of Big Tujunga Cyn Road\, but this is a popular hike right now and parking is limited – so carpooling is highly recommended. DO NOT KEEP ANY VALUABLES IN SIGHT IN YOUR VEHICLE! – there have been car break-ins when people left valuables visible in their car! \nDISTANCE: Minimum 4.9 miles – out and back. \nGAIN: Minimum 1276 ft \nRATED: Intermediate hike\, with some exposed hill climbs. Several creek crossings\, but you do not need to get wet. \nHIKE DURATION: About 3 – 4 hours (including a 20-minute snack time at the creek!). \nDESCRIPTION:\nWe’ll park on the highway at the trailhead. The first 3/4 mile is a dirt road that has some old grandfathered properties that we’ll pass by. At that point\, we’ll follow the canyon bottom along a well running creek\, and cross over the creek several times (you can cross without getting your feet wet). We’ll then leave the wonderful and cool creek bottom area\, and climb up an exposed ridge for another mile or so\, then drop back down slightly to the top of a really nice waterfall. We’ll likely stop there for a break/snack before returning the way we came. The temperature is expected to be in the 80’s-90’s Saturday\, but we’ll update you as we get closer with an updated forecast. \nSome scrambling Involved – To go to the bottom of the Waterfall\, you’ll need to climb down a short section of nearly vertical wall. You can step down\, but you will need to hold onto installed ropes to guide you down\, but to climb back up\, you’ll need to step up that wall\, and use the installed ropes to pull yourself up. Its only about 20 feet\, and should be doable for everyone\, but be aware. \nCAUTIONS: \n\nIf you are afraid of heights\, the exposed hill climb up to the waterfall is steep and narrow.\nRattlesnakes – always a possibility this time of year.\nParking and thefts – we saw a vehicle that someone had broken a window to steal what was inside. Do NOT leave anything visible in your car!\n\nBRING: \n\nAssume it will be warm to hot\, but it’s always smart to layer.\nPoles will be useful for creek crossing and the hill climb to the waterfall.\nRecommend a minimum of 3 liters of Water\, Electrolytes\, Snack lunch; a hat; and Sunscreen.\n\nADVENTURE PASS: Not required. \n**MEET AT: (**Google GPS Coordinates: 34.303714068691164\, -118.25772643048175**) Park on the side of the highway where available. If you’re coming from the 210 freeway\, exit at Sunland Blvd\, go north. It turns into Foothill Blvd. Turn left at Vista Oro\, go north to Big Tujunga Canyon Road\, then turn right (north) approx 4.8 miles. Look for cars parked along the highway for the trailhead. Meet at the gate at the trailhead at 7:30 am. We start hiking promptly at 7:45 am. \nLearn more: AllTrails page for this hike. Trail Canyon Falls: 4096 Reviews\, Map – California | AllTrails \nBathrooms: There are no bathroom facilities at this location. \nDogs: OK\, if well behaved around other dogs/ people with hiking poles and on a leash. Creek crossing may present a challenge for some dogs. If you bring a dog\, you likely will not be able to repell down the canyon wall to get to the waterfall bottom\, or pull yourself up with you and your dog! \nLeaders: Gary S. and Paul H.

SUMMARY:Short/ Long Local Conditioning Hike: East Cyn or go on to Mission Peak O/B
DESCRIPTION:July 1\, 2023 – Shorter or Longer Local Conditioning Hike: East Canyon to its end or go on a bit longer to Mission Peak (both are Out and Back) \nDISTANCE/ GAIN:\nBoth hikes are Out and Back (O/B) style; length depends on whether you do the second part (an extra ~3 miles round trip). \nNOTE: If you just want to do the “Shorter” hike\, you will go to the end of East Canyon and check out with the leader and then head back the same way you arrived\, back down East Canyon to the parking lot. It is straightforward but you will also be able to follow the arrows (we will have left) at any turns as you go back to the trail head. \n\n“Shorter”: East Canyon to the top ~ 6 mile Round trip total with 1320′ gain. Views of SFV\, SCV and Oat Mountain\, returning to East canyon trail head. Fair warning – this hike starts steeply but does get much easier later. This hike should finish by ~10.30 AM\n“Longer”: Same as above but with an add-on. ~ 9 miles Round Trip hike with 1635′ gain. At the top of East Canyon we turn South on the Sunshine Canyon Motorway for an out and back to Mission Peak (~3 extra miles total). Views of SFV\, the Van Norman Reservoir\, Balboa Blvd\, the West side of San Gabriels and East side of the Santa Susana Mountains off to the West.\n\nRATING:\nHike #1 – Moderate –\nHike #2 – Moderate + (mainly for distance).\nBoth hikes are not for beginners – you need to be in good physical condition to complete them (due to some decent gain near the start\, over a short distance). \nDESCRIPTION:\nLooks like it may be cooler than earlier in the week (check forecast)\, so it is a good time to visit the rolling hills\, views and quiet oak woodlands of the 480-acre Michael D. Antonovich Open Space.\nThis area straddles the ridgeline of the Santa Susana Mountains and there may be some mist at start. It features mixed woodlands of big cone Douglas-fir\, big leaf maple\, coast live oak\, California black walnut\, native ash\, and valley oak. Chances are high we will meet almost no one else for most of the hike. \nMEET: Your leader at the East Canyon Trail Head at 7:00AM for a 7:15AM SHARP departure up the canyon. \nDIRECTIONS: To East canyon Trail Head ( 34.35065\, -118.54585):\nExit the I-5 freeway if going North\, at Calgrove Blvd. Turn West and follow Calgrove around a curve and through one signal. You are now on the Old Road. Pass Towsley Cyn on the right; keep going along the road South for 0.8 miles\, Look for cars and trailhead on the right. Park on the Road (if you do not want to pay for parking). \nBRING: 2 liters water\, snack/lunch\, hiking poles. Good shoes with tead. If the day is cool\, bring an extra layer\, especially if going to Mission Peak\, as it usually is windy. \nADVENTURE PASS: Not required \nDOGS: Ok\, if on a leash and well-behaved with other dogs / people. \nLEADER(s): Paul H and Gary S.

SUMMARY:Pacoima Wash Canyon from Dillon Divide to Dutch Louie's Tunnel and Dagger Flat
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 8\, 2023: LOCAL – Pacoima Wash Canyon to Dutch Louie’s Tunnel and Dagger Flat \n***** RAIN OR SNOW FALLING AT TRAILHEAD CANCELS THIS HIKE ****** \nDISTANCE: 6 miles (out and back\, REVERSE style – that means uphill on the way back!) \nGAIN: ~ 850′ elevation gain\, all on the way back \nRATING: Moderate + (for the Gain on the way back up). You should be in good physical condition for the climb back up from the Wash. \nDESCRIPTION: This is another rarely visited local gem close to SCV. THANK YOU GARIN! \nThe hike starts at Dillon Divide\, a trailhead/ turnout\, on Little Tujunga Canyon. We follow a dirt road for a short distance until a single-track trail turns off left into Pacoima Canyon. It is a nice hike downhill into the canyon. Once in the canyon\, we follow trails and the creek bed: we cross the creek several times. Bring poles to help with stepping stones. The trail will take us to Dutch Louie Tunnel which has water flowing out of it. You do not need to got into the tunnel but if you do\, your feet will get wet\, so plan accordingly (water shoes?). \n(History: A prospector carved the tunnel through the rock to divert the creek\, so he could mine for gold in a dry creek bed. The tunnel is a 100-150 feet long and it still has the creek running through it. Here is some fun stuff about the mine\, Dutch Louie\, and other historical and geological stuff about the area:\nhttps://www.secretmines.com/p/pacoima-canyon-mines.html ) \nAfter the tunnel\, we will continue a little further up steam to the picturesque Dagger Flat area to snack before heading back the same way up out of the canyon. \nMEET YOUR LEADER:\nAt Dillon Divide at 7.00AM for a 7:15AM start down the trail. \nBRING: Plenty of water (3 liters recommended)\, electrolytes (e.g. Gatorade). Sunscreen\, hat\, lunch/ snacks\, hiking poles (helpful on the uphill portion and stream crossings)\, and a camera. Wear layered clothing in case it gets hot or cold (we will post forecast). Wear boots with lots of tread.\nGoing in the short wet Tunnel – Bring a small flashlight/headlight. !! You will get wet feet – wear waterproof hiking boots or have water shoes.\nNOTE: FOR EVERYONE’S SAFETY\, IF YOU WANT TO GO IN THE TUNNEL WITH OTHERS – BRING/ WEAR A CLOSE-FITTING MASK WHEN IN IT. \nCARPOOLS: We do not Organize these. However\, due to LIMITED PARKING at the Trailhead\, if you can carpool with friends you trust\, you can meet in NORTH SCV by STARBUCKS (address: 16548 Soledad Cyn Rd\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387)\, in the Sand Cyn / Soledad Cyn Rd\, VONS strip mall lot\, off 14 Hwy. Dillon Divide TH is 10.6 miles from this Starbucks ( ~ 22 mins). \nDIRECTIONS to Trail head (34.34461\, -118.34959):\nFrom South:\nTake I-5 North to SR-14 North (Lancaster / Palmdale). Exit at Sand Canyon\, and turn right on to Sand Canyon (South/East). \n(Note: If you are coming from anywhere in SFV South or East of of 5/ 14 HWY split\, Google may route you along the 210 and up Little Tujunga Canyon Road\, as the shortest route. If you are familiar with this route\, take it). \nFrom North (A/V):\nTake SR-14 South. Exit at Sand Canyon – Exit 9. On the off ramp\, keep in left lane and go up left on to Soledad Canyon. Almost immediately\, at the light\, turn left over the highway and keep going straight on to Sand Canyon – watch out for the 4 way STOP after the In-n-Out burger! \nBoth directions:\nNext (it’s another 10.6 miles total from 14) … Continue on Sand Canyon\, passing all the mansions\, past Placerita Canyon Rd. on your right\, etc.\, keep going straight\, as you enter the Angeles National Forest and continue up!up!up! along Sand Canyon Road\, until you see a winged memorial at a bad corner (on the right side). Shortly after this\, you will go around a sharp left hand bend and crest the hill (on this saddler you are now 6.1 miles from the highway and have another 4.2 miles to go); Bear Divide Vista picnic/parking area is immediately on the right.\nContinue 4.1 miles down the other side and eventually up around some bad curves\, until you see Dillon Divide\, a white gate on the left ( 34.34461\, -118.34959). \nPARKING: BE AWARE OF FAST CARS\, AT TRAIL HEAD\, PLEASE PARK STRAIGHT IN\, close as possible together\, and do not block the white gate. \nLIMITED PARKING but there are several turnouts below and above the gate – SEE DIAGRAM IN PHOTO ALBUM. \nAdventure Pass: No. There are no bathrooms at trail head but plenty of bushes. \nDogs: OK\, if kept on a leash and well behaved around other dogs and people with poles. \nLeaders: Paul Huskey and Gary S

SUMMARY:BKS - Switchback Hike - Mount Baden Powell O/B
DESCRIPTION:BKS ( Butt Kicker Series) Saturday July 15th\, 2023 – Vincent Gulch Divide to Mount Baden-Powell O/B \n******************************************************\n** Special Note on directions to the trailhead ** \nHighway 2 is still closed at Red Box.\nMake sure to take the route through Newhall via the northeast on CA-14 North and Pearblossom Hwy. See the map in the attached photos for details.\n******************************************************* \nHike: Meet at Vincent Gulch Divide trailhead at 7:15 A.M. Details below. \n***** Rain or extreme heat cancels all hikes***** \nDistance/ Gain: 7.8 miles total; 2\,800′ gain\, Out and Back style ( 40 X 2 Switchbacks!) \nRating: Moderate ++/ Strenuous (remember we will be at a higher altitude where the air is thinner) \nDescription: Picture this: you’re standing at the trailhead\, full of enthusiasm and optimism. The sun is shining\, the birds are chirping\, and you’re ready to conquer this mountain like any other BKS hike\, however Mount Baden Powell has a dark side that will make you question your life choices. \nGet ready for the never-ending switchbacks. Just when you think you’ve conquered one\, another pops up\, mocking your efforts and testing your endurance. It’s like a game of “Whack-a-Mole\,” but instead of moles\, it’s your spirit that gets repeatedly whacked by 40 switchbacks. \nBe prepared for fellow hikers on the trail that will be either wildly enthusiastic or completely delirious. There’s no in-between. Some will cheer you on with phrases like\, “You’re almost there!” and “You got this!” while others will mumble something incomprehensible that you can one can only assume is a secret hiker’s mantra. \nOnce we reach the summit we will be rewarded for our perseverance with stunning vistas and breathtaking views. All the sweat\, sore muscles\, and moments of doubt instantly become worth it\, not to mention a snack or a sandwich. \nAfter a well-deserved snacky time\, we will get our group photo and head on back down past Wally Waldon a local celebrity. This is a Limber Pine ( Pinus Flexilis) that is 1500 years old and believed to be the oldest living thing in the entire San Gabriel Mountains. \nMeeting your leader at the trailhead: We will meet at Vincent Gulch Divide at 7:15 AM for a 7:30 AM departure up the trail. (34.3731391721299\, -117.75191038616146) \nAdventure Pass: YES \nBathrooms: YES! At the trailhead. \nBring: Lots of water (3+ L)\, Electrolytes like Gatorade\, a hat\, sunscreen\, a lunch/ snack and hiking poles. Watch the weather forecast\, but it is always a good idea to pack another layer (in case it gets cold up there above 9000′ ). Good shoes with tread are a must. \nDogs: OK\, if on a leash and well-behaved with other dogs / people carrying poles. If you bring your dog\, please drive yourself. We do not recommend bringing our K9 friends if the weather forecast says it will be HOT. \nCarpool: SCV Caravan / Friends Carpool Meeting Spot – in NORTH Santa Clarita Valley (SCV): We do not organize carpools however if you want to carpool\, we suggest you message hikers/ close friends who you already know well and trust from a COVID perspective. A convenient place to meet on the way is: Outside STARBUCKS (16548 Soledad Canyon Rd\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387)\, in the SAND CANYON/ Soledad Canyon Road junction VONs strip mall parking lot\, off 14 Hwy.\nTHIS IS NOT A CHC-ORGANIZED CARPOOL \nHike Lead: Paul H

SUMMARY:Escape the Heat this weekend - Mt. Pinos\, Sawmill Peak (and maybe Grouse Peak)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday July 22\, 2023 \nMeetup Time : 7:45 A.M. (8:00 am SHARP hiking start) \nIt is predicted to be 100 F + in SCV this weekend. Escape with us to the cooler mountains nearby where we can enjoy the mid/high 70’s at 8\,000′. \nHEAT ALERT: Due to the current heat wave\, I will provide a followup weather/temperature forecast by Thursday before event. \nDISTANCE: 7 miles or 10.5 miles total (see Description) – out and back style. \nGAIN: 1100′ or 1900′ total (see Description) \nRATED: Not for beginners. This one is Moderate / Moderate +\, mainly for thin air (low oxygen) impact and a few steeper stretches. \nHIKE DURATION: About 4-1/2 hours (including a 20 minute snack break) \nDESCRIPTION:\nThis 7 mile hike (3.5 miles each way) from the 8340 ft. trail head takes you to 2 summits (first Mount Pinos 8831 ft. and then Sawmill Mountain 8818 ft). Moderate hikers should be easily able to complete all three summits.\nExtra credit: 3 extra miles to the final Peak at Grouse 8\,573 ft and back.\nOnce we get to Sawmill\, depending on the group make up/temperature/weather\, etc. we will collectively decide\, but most probably we will continue on to Grouse\, yet another Peak. If we do\, it would be almost 10.5 and 1200′ gain total for the hike.\nBear in mind\, this entire “out and back” trail is very well marked/ easy to follow\, so you can safely turn around at ANY stage\, depending on your ability/ stamina. Also\, we will have signposted the route with our popular orange chalk arrows to help you 🙂 \nMount Pinos is the highest point in Ventura County and lies on the edge of the Chumash Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest. Mount Pinos\, created over 100 million years ago was known as Iwihinmu to the indigenous Chumash people. The slopes are a mix of sub-alpine\, white fir\, and Jeffrey Pine habitats. The views from Mount Pinos are beautiful\, especially if air is clear (San Joaquin Valley to the North\, Tehachapi to the East\, and the Carrizo Plain and Temblor Mountains to the Northwest).\nHopefully\, there should still be plenty of wildflower action at this cooler altitude. \nBRING:\nStrong shoes\, dress in layers (expecting 75 F at start). Poles are useful\, if you have them; snack lunch; a hat; !!sunscreen!!\, bug spray / bug net (in case). 3 liters of liquids (2L water/ 1 liter electrolytes\, i.e. Gatorade)\, and your camera. \nADVENTURE PASS:\nNot required in Summer. See bathroom note below. \nMEET : (Google Coordinates 34.8135\, -119.1263)\nYour leader at the Mt Pinos / Nordic Hut trailhead parking at 8:00 AM; we will depart up the trail to Mt Pinos at 8:00 AM SHARP.\nAllow 1-1/4 hours to get to trailhead from Santa Clarita. \nDIRECTIONS: From Santa Clarita Valley: Take I-5 North ~ 40 miles to the Frazier Park off ramp. Exit\, turn left under highway. Go West on the Frazier Park Road for about 12 miles passing Lockhart Valley Road (on the left) until you see signs for Mt. Pinos. Stay to the left at the main fork (do not go to Pine Mountain Club). Follow the road ahead\, twisting and turning 9 miles up the mountain to the Nordic Hut parking area\, at the end of the road. Park on the left side\, by the Mt Pinos trailhead\, and look for the group there. \nNOTE: There may (or may not) be operational Porta Potty toilets at trailhead or campground nearby. We recommend a quick stop as you exit the 5 Fwy at the Truck stop / gas station on the left\, before heading toward Frazier Park. \nDRIVING: If you wish to arrange a carpool with friends – Towsley Canyon/ Rivendale Park (Google coordinates 34.35815928\, -118.55535859) is a good meeting spot (24335 The Old Rd\, Newhall\, CA 91321 ) off I-5. \nLeader: Gary S
