SUMMARY:Mt. Baden-Powell O/B via Vincent Gap – Saturday\, Sept 19
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: Picture this: you’re standing at the trailhead\, full of enthusiasm and optimism. The sun is shining\, the birds are chirping\, and you’re ready to conquer this mountain like any other hike . However\, Mount Baden-Powell has a dark side that will make you question your life choices. Winding its way up the north face of one of the tallest mountains in the San Gabriels\, this iconic trek features 35 to 40 never-ending switchbacks that exist purely to mock your physical preparation and repeatedly whack your spirit. It’s basically a vertical game of “Whack-a-Mole\,” but your thighs and lungs are the moles. \nYou will earn every single foot of this climb as you ascend through stands of Jeffrey\, Ponderosa\, and Lodgepole pines\, eventually reaching the timberline where you’ll pass Wally Waldon—a 1\,500-year-old Limber Pine who is a local celebrity and has been judging hikers since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. If you survive the switchbacks and the altitude\, the summit rewards you with stunning vistas\, breathtaking views of the San Gabriels\, and a sense of accomplishment that almost makes you forget you have to walk all the way back down. \nHike Organizer(s): Paul H \n\nMeet: Vincent Gulch Divide / Vincent Gap trailhead parking lot at 6:45 AM. We start moving at 7:00 AM sharp on Saturday\, Sept 19 . If you are late\, you will be left behind to contemplate your poor time management skills.\nDistance: Approximately 7.8 to 8.0 miles (out-and-back).\nElevation Gain: Approximately 2\,800 feet of climb.\nHighest Elevation: 9\,407 feet.\nTime: Approximately 4.0–5.0 hours depending on how long we spend weeping or eating sandwiches at the summit.\nConditioning: Moderate/ Strenuous You must be in generally good physical shape. If your main form of exercise over the last 90 days has been scrolling social media\, this hike will break you.\nDogs: OK\, but only if they are on a leash and well-behaved around other dogs and people waving trekking poles.\nRestrooms: YES! There are pit toilets at the Vincent Gap trailhead . Use them to say a quick prayer before we begin.\nThe parking fee details and rules include: It costs $5 per day (Standard Passes Are Not Accepted: Because this lot is concession-run\, traditional federal and state passes—including the National Parks / America the Beautiful Pass and the California Adventure Pass—are no longer accepted inside the paved lot.) If you want to bypass the fee\, you can join the rest of the rebels and park in the dirt pullouts across the road.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES (Read these or suffer the consequences): \n\n⚠️ CRITICAL ROAD CLOSURE INFO: Highway 2 is closed at Red Box / Islip Saddle Do NOT blindly trust Google Maps or Apple Maps if they tell you to drive up the Angeles Crest Highway from La Cañada. You must take the route through Newhall via CA-14 North and Pearblossom Highway\, coming in from the northeast side through Wrightwood. Plan for extra driving time!\nWeather: Rain\, high winds\, or extreme heat cancels this event. Check the weather before leaving. Remember\, it gets chilly above 9\,000 feet\, so packing a jacket is a smart move even if it’s warm at home.\n\nESSENTIAL GEAR: \n\nWater & Electrolytes: Bring at least 3+ Liters of water and some Gatorade/electrolytes [13\, 19]. There is no potable water at the trailhead or on the mountain.\nTrekking Poles: Highly recommended to preserve your knees and help you balance on the switchbacks.\nLayers: A hat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses\, and an extra layer (jacket/windbreaker) for the windy\, exposed summit.\nFood: High-energy snacks and a solid lunch for our “snacky time” at the summit.\nFootwear: Sturdy hiking shoes or trail runners with excellent tread are non-negotiable. No slick-soled tennis shoes or sandals unless you want to slide down the mountain on your face.\n\nTHIS HIKE RATING: Level 4\, Strenuous\nPlease only sign up if you have hiked similar distances and gains in the last 90 days.\nSCVH HIKE RATING SCALE: \n\nBeginner: 1–3 miles\, less than 500 feet elevation gain.\nBeginner/Intermediate: 1–7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain.\nIntermediate: 5–10 miles\, 1\,000–2\,000 feet elevation gain.\nStrenuous: 5-12 miles\, 2\,000-3\,500 feet elevation gain (This Hike!).\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY — PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Santa Clarita Valley Hikers (SCVHikers) and its volunteer organizers from any liability or responsibility in connection with your participation in this activity. Hiking is inherently risky. By signing up\, you are taking full responsibility for your own safety and well-being.\nSCVHikers and its organizers are not trained\, certified\, or compensated guides\, and the club does not confirm the qualifications of any member to lead or participate in its events. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions and judgment.\nBy signing up for any SCVHikers event\, you are releasing SCVHikers and its organizers from all liability for possible injury or death\, as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup Terms of Service (available at the bottom of the Meetup website). Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. If you sign up for this hike\, you are confirming that the hike is within your current abilities.\nAt the trailhead\, we will ask every participant to read and sign the SCVHikers Release of Liability and Express Assumption of Risk before the hike begins. If you are unwilling to sign\, you will not be able to join the group that day. Signing up on Meetup does not substitute for the trailhead sign-in.\nThe outing begins and ends at the trailhead. SCVHikers does not organize\, advertise\, or coordinate carpools. Transportation to and from the trailhead is your own responsibility\, and all risks of that travel are yours alone.\nThis event may be cancelled or modified due to weather\, trail conditions\, or other safety considerations.

SUMMARY:Vasquez Rocks Extended Loop via PCT
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a scenic hike through Vasquez Rocks Natural Area and Nature Center in Agua Dulce. This moderate loop combines the park’s dramatic rock formations\, high-desert scenery\, and a section of the legendary Pacific Crest Trail.\nDistance: Approximately 3.3–3.4 miles\nElevation Gain: Approximately 500–600 feet\nDifficulty: Moderate\nEstimated Hiking Time: 1.5–2 hours\, depending on group pace and stops\nTrail Type: Loop\nTerrain: Dirt trail\, sandy areas\, uneven and rocky sections\, and moderate climbs/descents\nShade: Very limited\nThe hike winds through one of Southern California’s most distinctive landscapes\, surrounded by massive\, sharply angled rock formations created by millions of years of geologic activity. Vasquez Rocks is also the ancestral Tataviam village of Mapipinga and has a rich cultural history.\nOur route incorporates a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) before continuing through the network of trails within Vasquez Rocks. Expect rolling climbs and descents\, sweeping views of the Soledad Basin\, desert vegetation\, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy and photograph the famous rock formations. LA County describes the comparable PCT/Apwinga loop as a moderate 3.4-mile hike with approximately 600 feet of elevation gain.\nWhat to Expect\nThis is a moderate hike appropriate for hikers who are comfortable walking several miles over uneven terrain and handling moderate elevation changes. The trail is highly exposed\, so sun and heat can significantly increase the difficulty. There is very little natural shade along the route.\nBring: Plenty of water\, sturdy hiking shoes\, sun protection\, hat\, sunglasses\, snacks\, and any personal medications you may need.\nWildlife: This is rattlesnake habitat. Stay alert\, watch where you step or place your hands\, and give all wildlife plenty of space. Dogs should remain leashed.\nHighlights \n\nIconic Vasquez Rocks formations\nHiking a section of the Pacific Crest Trail\nPanoramic high-desert and Soledad Basin views\nFascinating geology and cultural history\nNative desert plants and seasonal wildflowers\nExcellent photography opportunities\nA fun moderate loop without committing to an all-day hike\n\nTrailhead: Vasquez Rocks Natural Area\, 10700 Escondido Canyon Road\, Agua Dulce\, CA. The park has an interpretive center\, picnic areas\, trails and restrooms/facilities; drinking water at the Interpretive Center is available during its business hours. \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 2\, Beginner/Intermediate (see chart below).\nPlease only sign up to attend hikes that are consistent with your ability. Based on your hiking during the last 90 days\, how would you score on the THC Hike rating scale of one to five assuming a moderate pace (~2.5 mph)?\nTHC HIKE RANKING SCALE: \n\nBeginner: 1-3 miles\, less than 500 feet elevation gain.\nBeginner/Intermediate: 1-7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain.\nIntermediate: 5-10 miles\, 1\,000-2\,000 feet elevation gain.\nIntermediate/Advanced: 7-12 miles\, up to 3\,000 feet elevation gain.\nAdvanced: 10-17 miles\, 3\,000 feet or more elevation gain.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing The Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. While safety is a priority for everyone in the group\, hiking can be inherently risky. By participating in any posted event\, you are assuming responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Hiking Club (THC) Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders\, and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in our events. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any The Hiking Club Meetup events\, you are releasing The Hiking Club Meetup Group and Hike Leaders from all liability in case of possible injuries or death as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. If you sign up for this hike\, you are verifying that this hike is within your abilities.

SUMMARY:Crystal Lake to Throop Peak
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: This is a scouting hike on a trail that’s new to me\, so spots are limited. RSVPs will be waitlisted\, and I’ll confirm attendees after a quick look at recent hiking history. \nThis is a big-day summit hike into the high country of the San Gabriels\, and one of the most rewarding peaks we can reach within a couple hours of Santa Clarita. The route climbs steadily from Crystal Lake to the 9\,138-foot summit of Throop Peak\, where on a clear day the view stretches from the Mojave to the Pacific—Mt. Baldy\, Mt. Baden-Powell\, and Catalina Island all in one sweep. You earn it: the trail gains roughly 3\,400 feet over exposed ridgeline\, most of it in the first half. \nFrom the Windy Gap Trailhead at the upper end of the Crystal Lake Recreation Area\, the trail climbs about 2.1 miles through pine forest to Windy Gap\, crossing two roads along the way (both clearly signed—stay on the Windy Gap Trail). At Windy Gap you join the Pacific Crest Trail heading toward Vincent Gap. From here the PCT climbs gently along a beautiful ridge with big views of the high peaks\, past the Hawkins Ridge Trail junction and an unmarked spur to Mt. Hawkins\, to an easy-to-miss use trail that leads up to Throop Peak. (If you reach the PCT sign for the Dawson Saddle Trail\, you’ve gone too far—turn back.) After summiting\, return the same way. This is high\, dry\, and exposed terrain with very little reliable shade and no dependable water—come prepared to be self-sufficient for the day. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike organizer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Windy Gap Trailhead parking\, upper lot of the Crystal Lake Recreation Area\, Azusa\, CA 91702\, at 6:45\, departure at 7:00 sharp (Aug 29).\nDistance: Approximately 11.8 miles (out-and-back).\nElevation gain: Approximately 3\,398 feet.\nSummit elevation: Approximately 9\,138 feet (Throop Peak).\nTime: Approximately 7–8 hours hiking\, depending on pace and time on the summit.\nConditioning: You need to be in strong physical condition. This is a sustained\, high-altitude climb with continuous elevation gain\, long exposed stretches\, and thin air above 8\,000 feet. Prior experience at altitude and on hikes of this length is strongly recommended.\nDogs: Not Allowed.\nRestrooms: Available at the trailhead parking area. None along the trail.\nAdventure Pass: Required. A National Forest Adventure Pass (or equivalent Interagency/federal pass) must be displayed in your vehicle to park at Crystal Lake.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: There is little shade and no reliable water on the route—carry everything you’ll drink. The turn-offs for the peaks are easy to miss; stay on your downloaded map. Altitude affects people differently\, even the fit—pace yourself and turn around if you feel unwell. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter wildlife\, or face unexpected conditions on this hike. Finally\, this event may be cancelled due to inclement weather. \nESSENTIAL GEAR: Sturdy trail shoes or boots with good tread for rocky\, uneven footing. Trekking poles recommended for the sustained climb and descent. Hat\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, and sun-protective clothing—this trail is mostly exposed. A warm layer and windbreaker for the summit\, where it’s cooler and windier than below. Snacks and a packed lunch. Refillable water bottles or reservoir with at least 3 liters; there is no reliable water on the trail. \nThe Ten Essentials of Hiking (link) \nTHIS HIKE RATING: Level 5\, Advanced (see chart below).\nPlease only sign up to attend hikes that are consistent with your ability. Based on your hiking during the last 90 days\, how would you score on the Santa Clarita Valley Hikers (SCVHikers) hike rating scale of one to five\, assuming a moderate pace (~2.5 mph)? \nSCVH HIKE RATING SCALE: \n\nBeginner: 1–3 miles\, less than 500 feet elevation gain.\nBeginner/Intermediate: 1–7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain.\nIntermediate: 5–10 miles\, 1000–2000 feet elevation gain.\nIntermediate/Advanced: 7–12 miles\, up to 3000 feet elevation gain.\nAdvanced: 10–17 miles\, 3000 feet or more elevation gain.\n\nTRAILHEAD LOCATION:\nWindy Gap Trailhead\, Crystal Lake Recreation Area (upper parking lot)\, Azusa\, CA 91702 — approx. coordinates 34.3267\, -117.8323. If your GPS struggles\, navigate to the Crystal Lake Visitor Center (9877 N Crystal Lake Rd\, Azusa\, CA 91702) and follow signs to the Windy Gap trailhead parking. \nDriving Directions (link) \nNAVIGATION: We highly recommend the AllTrails app be installed on your cell phones and/or you print a copy of the trail map so you can personally navigate the trail if you need to. Cell service is unreliable up here—download your AllTrails maps for offline access before you leave home. The route follows the well-signed Windy Gap Trail and the PCT\, but the summit use trails to Throop Peak are unmarked and easy to miss. Stay on the AllTrails route. \nGPS Trail Map (link) \nUSFS Angeles NF – Road Status & Alerts (link) \nIf You Need Help on the Trail\nIn AllTrails\, swipe up on the Navigate drawer and tap “GPS details” to see your coordinates. Screenshot them\, then call 911 and read off the numbers. As a backup\, the What3Words app names any location with three words that are easy to read aloud to a dispatcher. Your GPS works even without cell service—you just need signal to make the call.\nWe rely on donations to continue sponsoring hikes like this. Please contribute via cash or Venmo at each hike. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY — PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Santa Clarita Valley Hikers (SCVHikers) and its volunteer organizers from any liability or responsibility in connection with your participation in this activity. SUMMARY:Mount Pinos Campground via McGill Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: When it’s hot we go early\, we get altitude and head to the mountains! Hiking Mount Pinos will take you away from the summer heat of SCV\, dropping ~20 degrees where you can enjoy alpine views while listening to the breeze gently caressing huge pines. Starting near the Frazier Park sledding location where there is ample parking\, we’ll follow Cuddy Valley Road to the McGill Trailhead. This is an out-and-back\, so if you do not want to do the full hike\, you can safely turn around whenever you like and head back. \nDETAILS:\n1. Hike organizer(s): Michele.\n2. Meet: Cuddy Valley Road trailhead parking area\, Frazier Park\, at 6:45 am\, departure at 7:00 am sharp (Aug 22).\n3. Distance: Approximately 10.38 miles (out-and-back).\n4. Elevation gain: Approximately 1\,923 feet.\n5. Time: Approximately 5 hours hiking\, including a snack break.\n6. Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n7. Dogs: Not allowed.\n8. Restrooms: None at the trailhead or along the trail.\n9. Adventure Pass: Required.\n10. Turnaround: This is an out-and-back — turn around at any point if you need a shorter outing. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: There are no expected stream crossings\, technical exposures\, or significant route-finding challenges on this trail. The elevation (8\,800+ feet at the summit) means cooler temps but also thinner air — pace yourself\, especially early. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter wildlife\, or face unexpected conditions on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather. \nESSENTIAL GEAR: Hiking boots and trekking poles. Clothing layers — temperatures at elevation can be 15–20°F cooler than SCV and conditions can change quickly. Hat and sunscreen. Snacks and a packed lunch. Refillable water bottle with 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets. Bug spray. \nThe Ten Essentials of Hiking (link) \nTHIS HIKE RATING: Level 3\, Intermediate (see chart below).\nPlease only sign up to attend hikes that are consistent with your ability. Based on your hiking during the last 90 days\, how would you score on the Santa Clarita Valley Hikers (SCVHikers) hike rating scale of one to five\, assuming a moderate pace (~2.5 mph)? \nSCVH HIKE RATING SCALE:\n1. Beginner: 1–3 miles\, less than 500 feet elevation gain.\n2. Beginner/Intermediate: 1–7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain.\n3. Intermediate: 5–10 miles\, 1000–2000 feet elevation gain.\n4. Intermediate/Advanced: 7–12 miles\, up to 3000 feet elevation gain.\n5. Advanced: 10–17 miles\, 3000 feet or more elevation gain. \nTRAILHEAD LOCATION:\nCuddy Valley Road Trailhead\, Mt Pinos Rd\, Frazier Park\, CA\n(Between Cuddy Valley Rd. and Forest Route 9N05) \nDriving Directions (link) \nNAVIGATION: We highly recommend the AllTrails app be installed on your cell phones and/or you print a copy of the trail map so you can personally navigate the trail if you need to. SUMMARY:Los Pinetos To May Peak or Camp Nine
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nThis adventurous out-and-back trek whisks you from Placerita Canyon’s peaceful oak groves into the wild heart of the Angeles National Forest\, with Camp Nine—a remote wildland firefighting station perched on Bear Divide—as your prize. Or stop at May Peak for a shorter intermediate hike if you like (see details below). \nYou’ll ease into things with a friendly stroll along the Canyon Trail before Los Pinetos Trail decides to get serious. Mile three is where this hike flexes its muscles with a heart pumping 700-foot climb that’ll have you questioning your life choices—at least until the trail mercifully ducks under a canopy of shady oaks as you approach Wilson Saddle. \nFrom the saddle\, fire road 3N17 leads you onward to Camp Nine\, where you’ve earned every bite of that summit sandwich before turning around and heading home. This roughly 12-mile round-tripper delivers big rewards: sweeping mountain panoramas\, dramatic landscape shifts from sunbaked chaparral to cool forest corridors\, and a peek at the backcountry infrastructure that keeps these mountains from going up in smoke. Just know what you’re signing up for—over 1\,100 feet of elevation gain in four miles\, rocky and occasionally cranky trail conditions\, and exposed stretches that laugh at your sunscreen. \nDETAILS:\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R. \n\nMeet: 19798 Placerita Canyon Rd\, at 6:45 am\, departure at 7:00 am sharp (Mar 14).\nDistance: Approximately 9.6/11.7 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,333/2\,470 feet.\nTime: Approximately 6.0 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Replacement Hike: Mentryville – Pico Canyon Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nSaturday\, February 21\, 2026\nSince our planned hike to Paradise Falls was cancelled due to trail closures\, we’re pivoting to a fantastic local alternative: \nMentryville: Pico Canyon Trail\nWe’ll start from Mentryville\, a historic Santa Clarita Valley site located at the base of Pico Canyon’s chaparral-covered slopes. Mentryville was an 1880s oil boom town built around its oil well\, Pico No. 4. Named for Charles Mentry\, several historic buildings still stand today\, including a grand thirteen-room mansion\, a one-room schoolhouse\, and a barn. Both Mentryville and Pico No. 4 are registered California State Historical Landmarks.\nThe hike begins on an asphalt road\, transitions to a fire road\, and eventually narrows to single-track trail. Pico Canyon Trail is one of our local gems — in just a short distance\, you’ll feel miles away from the hustle and bustle and immersed in wide-open backcountry with beautiful canyon views. \nDETAILS: \n\nMeet: Mentryville Parking lot where Pico Canyon Road ends at 8:15am\, departure at 8:30 am sharp (Feb 21).\nDistance: Approximately 6.8 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,272 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including one snack break (brisk pace).\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition (this is not a beginner hike).\nDogs: Must be on leash.\nRestrooms – Yes at the park.\nAdventure Pass: Not required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Waterfalls\, Wildwood & Well-Placed Bathrooms: The Paradise Falls Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Paradise Falls is Thousand Oaks’s version of Towsley Canyon—with similar canyon scenery\, a rewarding waterfall destination\, and the bonus of actual restroom facilities. Located in Wildwood Park\, we will explore the scenic route to the falls before climbing up to Wildwood Mesa for sweeping canyon views and a great look toward Mount Clef Ridge. Along the way\, we’ll cover between 5.3 and 6.5 miles\, gaining roughly 900–1\,000 feet of elevation depending on conditions and route choice. Expect some rugged\, uneven sections\, possible encounters with mountain bikers\, and more company near the falls—especially on weekends. Bridges typically span the creek outside of rainy season\, and while the water isn’t suitable for splashing around\, the well-placed facilities nearby make this a comfortable and scenic canyon adventure. \nThis is a moderate hike with some elevation. Please make sure to bring water and snacks\, sunblock\, and good shoes.

SUMMARY:Pratt Trail To Nordhoff Ridge or Peak
DESCRIPTION:Ready to earn those mountain views? The Pratt Trail is Ojai’s classic “no pain\, no gain” adventure—a 9.7-mile out-and-back beast that’ll have you climbing 3\,103 feet through Los Padres National Forest. When we’re at Nordhoff Ridge\, those who want to can hike the extra .75 miles/388 feet gain to the peak (details below). Plan on 5-6 hours of quality time with switchbacks! \nStarting just north of downtown Ojai\, you’ll begin easy enough\, paralleling a creek and enjoying some shade. But don’t get too comfortable. The first hour or two will lull you into thinking “this isn’t that hard\,” then reality kicks in with a steady climb. Rockslides have left their mark in spots so\, be sure to wear actual hiking shoes\, not your cute flats! \nWhat makes it worth the sweat? Jaw-dropping views of the Topatopa Mountains and Ojai Valley that just keep getting better with elevation. You’ll pass through diverse terrain—chaparral\, wildflower meadows\, maybe even spot some wildlife. Water flows in cooler months\, and there’s a eucalyptus grove to break things up. \nDogs are welcome (can be off leash in areas)\, and the trail is open year-round. SUMMARY:Mt. McDill Loop (Lincoln Crest → McDill → Sierra Pelona Motorway)
DESCRIPTION:Hike Leader: Gary S. (Looking for Sweep volunteers) \nThis hike is part of my ongoing search for lesser-traveled local routes. It’s not flashy\, but it delivers: wide-open mountain scenery\, big views\, a solid conditioning workout\, and a good chance of wildlife and February wildflowers. And no people! When Paul and I pre-hiked it in late summer\, we didn’t see a single other person. \nThis is a moderate\, steady-paced conditioning hike\, not a race. We’ll move efficiently but comfortably\, take time to enjoy the views\, and keep the group together. A sweep will be present\, and so if you do lag behind a bit\, we’ll understand! If you’re a speedster\, and wish to hike at breakneck speed\, please do NOT sign up for this hike. We’ll take a more moderate pace that everyone is comfortable with. \nThe route starts at Lincoln Crest near the highest point (the crest) of Bouquet Canyon Road. We begin at ~3\,560 ft\, climbing a gated service road before transitioning to the original McDill single-track. After steady climbing through chaparral and mahogany\, we reach the Sierra Pellona Motorway (dirt road) and continue to Mt. McDill (5\,135 ft)\, where we’ll take a break\, hopefully find more deer\, enjoy the views\, and possibly sign the summit register. \nViews include Grass Mountain\, Mojave and Tehachapi peaks\, Leona Valley\, Lancaster\, Agua Dulce/Acton\, and glimpses of Mt. Pacifico\, Mt. Gleason\, and Baden-Powell. \nThe return includes a steep\, eroded\, and slippery downhill section on a non-maintained trail. Trekking poles and boots with good tread are strongly recommended. We’ll take this section slowly and carefully. \nThis is not a well-known trail\, but how often do you find a good local hike nearby that you haven’t hiked before? Check it out! \nStats: \n\nDistance: 6.5 miles\nElevation gain: ~1\,565 ft\nTime: 4 – 4.5 hours including snack time\nDifficulty: Solid **3.5 (**Intermediate: 5-10 miles\, 1000-2000 feet elevation gain with some challenging climbs and one tougher downhill section)\nExposure: Mostly exposed; expect wind and cooler temps\, wear layers\nAdventure Pass: Required\n\nWildlife note: On our pre-hike (on a very warm summer day)\, we saw multiple rattlesnakes\, horned lizards\, deer\, and other wildlife. Also plenty of interesting rocks and rock formations for fellow rockheads. \nMeet: 8:15 AM for a 8:30 AM sharp start\nTrailhead (Lincoln Crest area of Bouquet Canyon Road – near the highest point of Bouquet Cyn Road before it descends down towards Lake Elizabeth Road). Park along the road; leave nothing visible in your car. \n\nGPS: 34.58645\, -118.30547\nWhat3Words Map and Navigation (click this link)\n\nGetting There: \n\n~35 minutes north of Santa Clarita up Bouquet Canyon Rd\nFrom Antelope Valley: Lake Elizabeth Rd → south on Bouquet Canyon Road ~3.2 miles just past the Angeles Forest sign (at the peak)\n\nBring: Trekking poles\, lunch/snacks\, minimum 2L water (include electrolytes)\, layers\, hat\, sunscreen\, camera\, good hiking boots/shoes with good tread. This is a fully exposed hike\, so definitely watch the weather and wear layers if it’s cold and/or windy! \nFacilities: No bathrooms or nearby services \nDogs: Not recommended due to narrow trails\, the possibility of rattlesnakes and the steep\, eroded descent \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. SUMMARY:Vasquez Rocks Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:This 11.7-mile lollipop route including a section of the Pacific Crest Trail offers a compelling journey through one of Southern California’s most distinctive geological landscapes. The moderately challenging route takes an average of 6 hours to complete\, delivering hikers through lush desert canyons\, dramatic rock formations\, and seasonal creek crossings before culminating at the iconic Vasquez Rocks—those striking sandstone slabs tilted at impossible angles that you’ve undoubtedly seen in countless films and TV shows. \nThe trail’s highlight is its passage through Escondido Canyon\, where the PCT descends into a beautiful riparian corridor with possible water crossings during wet seasons Around the 2.7-mile mark\, you’ll encounter one of the hike’s most unusual features: a tall\, unlit tunnel that carries the trail beneath Highway 14. Just north of this tunnel\, hikers often find excellent spots for rest breaks\, and midway through the hike on the southern side\, there’s a small cave or overhang perfect for lunch. The route rewards you with panoramic views from ridgelines and the opportunity to spot wildlife ranging from crows to rattlesnakes\, with spring bringing spectacular wildflower displays\, particularly California poppies carpeting the south-facing slopes. \nThe Vasquez Rocks themselves were formed approximately 25 million years ago when the collision of the North American and Pacific tectonic plates uplifted sedimentary layers along the Elkhorn Fault. These coarse-grained sandstone formations accumulated from debris flows that eroded from the nearby San Gabriel and Sierra Pelona Mountains\, creating alluvial fan deposits that were later buried\, compressed\, and dramatically tilted by ongoing seismic activity. The park holds deep cultural significance as well—it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 due to its importance as a prehistoric site for the Shoshone and Tataviam people. Whether you’re a geology enthusiast\, history buff\, or simply seeking a scenic desert hike with that quintessential SoCal filming location at the finish\, this PCT section delivers a memorable outdoor experience accessible year-round. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Vasquez Rocks rear parking area at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Jan 31).\nDistance: Approximately 11.7 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,402 feet.\nTime: Approximately 6.0 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. There are no expected stream crossings\, exposures\, bugs or other warnings. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, snakes\, etc. on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather before or at the start of the hike. Check the weather report and plan accordingly. \nESSENTIAL GEAR: Hiking boots and poles. SUMMARY:Sisar Canyon Road to White Ledge Campground
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nThis scenic out-and-back trail in the Los Padres National Forest offers a perfect blend of accessibility and wilderness character. The well-maintained fire road climbs steadily through Sisar Canyon\, gaining about 2\,300 feet over roughly 5 miles to reach White Ledge Camp. The wide path makes for easy navigation while still providing that satisfying sense of getting into the backcountry. Along the way\, you’ll pass through diverse vegetation zones—from chaparral-covered slopes to shaded oak groves—with occasional glimpses of the surrounding ridges. The steady grade makes this an excellent conditioning hike\, though it can feel exposed and hot in summer months. \nWhite Ledge Camp itself is a backcountry campsite\, tucked into a peaceful canyon setting with a few shaded campsites and a seasonal creek (which is likely dry this time of year). The camp makes a great turnaround point for day hikers or serves as a quiet overnight spot for those wanting to extend the adventure. While the fire road surface might not offer the rugged single-track experience some prefer\, the trade-off is a reliable\, well-graded trail that’s perfect for building endurance or introducing friends to backcountry hiking. It’s a solid choice when you want good elevation gain without technical challenges\, and the relatively quiet nature of this trail compared to more popular Ventura County hikes is definitely a bonus. Parking is limited so car pool and get there early if you can. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: 12540 Ojai Rd\, Ojai at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Jan 17).\nDistance: Approximately 10.6 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,283 feet.\nTime: Approximately 5.0 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are no bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:SPECIAL HISTORICAL HIKE TO THE ST. FRANCIS DAM DISASTER NATIONAL MEMORIAL SITE
DESCRIPTION:Due to the inclement weather over the past few days\, the forest is currently closed. As a result\, we will need to postpone our hike.\nWe are tentatively planning to reschedule for January 10\, pending the Forest Service reopening the area and favorable weather conditions We’ll provide an update as we get closer and have more clarity. \nThank you for your understanding\, and stay safe. \nHistorical Hike above and through the ruins of the St. Francis Dam: \nThis hike will go up above the powerhouse\, where people will have a chance to stand on a metal bridge above the pennstocks\, and if water is propelling through the pennstocks\, they will feel a pretty good hearty shake coming from the pennstocks….sometimes they may even hear a rock bouncing through the pipes. \nThe hike will then begin\, up above the dam site\, giving hikers an aerial view. Once we cross the river\, we will be able to walk on the foundation of the dam and the area that was blown up after the dam failure. Then we will enjoy the tour of the actual dam site up close\, and see a natural BOG. Shoes should be the best gripping hiking boots that you have. Mileage is approx. 7.5 miles. Hiking sticks are highly recommended. You will be making your way up wooden stairs that were damaged by the flood. There is exposed metal and broken stairs left behind by nearly 200′ of water overhead. Hiking Poles will be extremely helpful. \nPlease listen to your leader who will point out areas that are not safe. She will point to eroded areas\, places on the bridge that we will cross that are not safe\, and potential hazards along the way. \n\nclothing to wear: old loose clothing\, hiking boots or shoes with gripping soles\, hat/hiking sticks are mandatory.\nPlease bring lunch. We will have a lunch break.\n\nDirections: Take the I-5 freeway north. Exit Newhall Ranch Road\, turn right. \nTurn right on Copperhill Road \nStay on Copperhill until you get to San Francisquito Road. Turn Left. Meet Dianne on the shoulder on the right side as soon as you turn on to San Francisquito Road. \nWhile driving once we leave the meeting spot\, Be careful on this road…it is a dangerous road where people speed and take chances\, and do dangerous passing of other cars.\nDon’t be a statistic \nFYI: Powerhouse 2 Address:\n32400 San Francisquito Road\nSanta Clarita\, CA 91390 \nIf you are late\, you might try to catch up with us here. \n1) Just beyond the powerhouse\, there will be a turnout with K-rails. This is the lower entrance to the dam site. This is where late comers MIGHT be able to catch up with us.Do NOT go past the stop sign. If you reach the stop sign\, you will have gone too far. \nDirections…..take McBean Parkway all the way north to Copper Hill Road. Turn right. Turn left at San Francisquito Road. Dianne will meet you at the right side of the road\, and we will carpool to the bottom of the dam site entrance. We will make one quick stop at the Power House 2 turnout. DO NOT PULL INTO THE PARKING LOT FOR POWER HOUSE \nAlternate directions: \nTake the I-5 freeway north. Exit Newhall Ranch Road/Copper Hill\, turn right. \nStay on Copperhill until you get to San Francisquito Road. Turn Left\nFind Dianne on the right side of the road in the pull out area. There should be other cars there. Be prompt.\nOnce we leave the meeting spot\, please be careful on this road…it is a dangerous road where people speed and take chances/ pass when it’s not safe\, and speed. Many deaths occur on this road.\nDon’t be a statistic\, be safe \nCELL SERVICE: There is NONE. Once you return to Copper Hill Road\, you will most likely have your service restored. \nNOTE:.Mulholland built 19 dams in the Los Angeles area\, and this is the only one that failed. GEOLOGY is why it failed. Geology was not even a science in 1920s….and when it was talked about\, people scoffed at the idea…..a rock is a rock……and yet the remaining 18 dams that Mulholland built in L.A. still stand.\nDon’t be a statistic\, be safe \nCELL SERVICE: There is NONE. Once you return to Copper Hill Road\, you will most likely have your service restored. \nPowerhouse 2 Address Just for your info. We will park near the powerhouse\, NOT INSIDE THEIR GATE:\n32400 San Francisquito Road\nSanta Clarita\, CA 91390 \nDianne Hellrigel\nQUESTIONS: zuliebear@aol.com

SUMMARY:Serrano to Sycamore Canyon Loop Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: We start at the Big Sycamore Canyon Campground near sea level\, heading north on the pleasant Sycamore Canyon Trail for 1.5 miles before turning east into the densely wooded Serrano Canyon. The trail follows a seasonal stream with abundant crossings (if there is water which seems unlikely this late in August) and wildlife sightings as we wind through the narrow canyon surrounded by lush vegetation. After gaining elevation through the creek bed\, we emerge into stunning open grasslands set against the dramatic backdrop of Boney Mountain\, climbing approximately 800 feet over the first 4 miles. The trail traverses these rolling meadows\, passing an old aluminum shack where many hikers pause to enjoy the sweeping vistas. From here\, we connect to the Old Boney Trail for a scenic descent back toward Big Sycamore Canyon\, completing the loop on a wide fire road that offers different perspectives of the surrounding wilderness. The final stretch returns us through the campground to our starting point\, having experienced both intimate canyon beauty and expansive mountain views on this fun 9.2-mile adventure. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Sycamore Canyon Trailhead\, Point Mugu State Park\, Malibu\, CA (Sep 13).\nDistance: Approximately 9.2 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,177 feet.\nTime: Approximately 4.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: No dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Morro Bay Camping Trip\, Thurs Aug 14 - Sun Aug 17\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:CHC Camping Trip\nMorro Bay State Park Campground. August 14-17\, 2025 \nJoin us for a fun and educational beach campout! \nMorro Bay State Park is located 13 miles west of San Luis Obispo\, on the Central Coast about 3.5 hours from Santa Clarita. The park features a lagoon and natural bay habitats\, and a natural history museum. Our CHC geologist\, Mary Bates will be along to teach about the geological features of the area. On the lagoon’s northeastern and eastern edges\, there are saltwater and brackish marshes that support thriving bird populations. Two of the Nine Sisters chain of volcanic peaks leading from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay\, Black Hill & Cerro Cabrillo\, are within park boundaries. Black Hill has a trail winding through dense stands of Monterey Pine trees and offers a panoramic view of the greater Morro Bay area at its summit. Cerro Cabrillo has even more trails to explore all along its base. It is near Montana de Oro\, which also has some beautiful trails. \nThe Community Hiking Club of SCV has reserved a limited number of pre-paid campsites which are available for sharing with other CHC campers. The cost of the reserved campsites will be divided equally among the number of campers per site. Each camper will be advised of their portion prior to the trip and is responsible for paying the party who reserved the campsite upon arrival. \nEach campsite has a fire ring and picnic table with water spigots nearby. There are flush toilets and TOKEN-operated shower facilities in place. An RV sanitation station and water-fill station are also available. Firewood is for sale from the campground host and proceeds go to help the Central Coast State Parks Association. \nOnly 2 vehicles maximum per campsite\, so carpooling from SCV is highly recommended. No extra vehicles in campsites beyond the 2 vehicle limit. Trailers and motorcycles count as vehicles. Additional vehicles may be parked just outside the state park. Arrangements can be made with another camper to help bring you and your camping equipment into the campground with their vehicle should you arrive after the parking spots at the campsite have been filled. \n8 Persons maximum per campsite. \nDogs must be monitored and leashed within the campgrounds. \nTo Reserve a Spot: RSVP AND secure your spot with a $20 deposit. Venmo your deposit to @Heidi-Webber-5 with the comment “Morro Bay Camping.” The rest of the fees will be divided between attendees and collected at the campsite. First come\, first served. \nRefund Policy:\nIf you cancel\, your deposit is forfeited.\nIf CHC cancels a camping trip that requires a reservation fee at the time the site is reserved\, each camper that paid the $20 deposit to hold their spot on the trip will be refunded all of their $20 minus the shared cost of any cancellation fee\, if one is charged. \nAddress:\nMorro Bay Campground\nState Park Road\nMorro Bay\, CA 93442 \nDirections:\nMorro Bay State Park & Campground are located: \n\n13 miles west of San Luis Obispo on Highway 1\n32 miles south of the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument Visitor Center on Highway 1\n124 miles south of Monterey through Big Sur on Highway 1 (When road conditions permit)\nThe charming community of Morro Bay is located 1.5 miles to the north of the campground and offers gas stations\, grocery stores\, dining and more.\nThe coastal town of Cayucos is located 7.5 miles to the north of the campground and offers more dining choices.\nThe small town of Los Osos is located 5 miles to the south of the campground and offers even more gas stations\, grocery stores\, and dining options.\n\n\n\nGoogle Maps link:\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/Unrn7SVp9oPRmyWn6 \nMore information will go out the week of the trip.\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity.
