SUMMARY:SPECIAL HISTORICAL HIKE TO THE ST. FRANCIS DAM DISASTER NATIONAL MEMORIAL SITE
DESCRIPTION:Due to the inclement weather over the past few days\, the forest is currently closed. As a result\, we will need to postpone our hike.\nWe are tentatively planning to reschedule for January 10\, pending the Forest Service reopening the area and favorable weather conditions We’ll provide an update as we get closer and have more clarity. \nThank you for your understanding\, and stay safe. \nHistorical Hike above and through the ruins of the St. Francis Dam: \nThis hike will go up above the powerhouse\, where people will have a chance to stand on a metal bridge above the pennstocks\, and if water is propelling through the pennstocks\, they will feel a pretty good hearty shake coming from the pennstocks….sometimes they may even hear a rock bouncing through the pipes. \nThe hike will then begin\, up above the dam site\, giving hikers an aerial view. Once we cross the river\, we will be able to walk on the foundation of the dam and the area that was blown up after the dam failure. Then we will enjoy the tour of the actual dam site up close\, and see a natural BOG. Shoes should be the best gripping hiking boots that you have. Mileage is approx. 7.5 miles. Hiking sticks are highly recommended. You will be making your way up wooden stairs that were damaged by the flood. There is exposed metal and broken stairs left behind by nearly 200′ of water overhead. Hiking Poles will be extremely helpful. \nPlease listen to your leader who will point out areas that are not safe. She will point to eroded areas\, places on the bridge that we will cross that are not safe\, and potential hazards along the way. \n\nclothing to wear: old loose clothing\, hiking boots or shoes with gripping soles\, hat/hiking sticks are mandatory.\nPlease bring lunch. We will have a lunch break.\n\nDirections: Take the I-5 freeway north. Exit Newhall Ranch Road\, turn right. \nTurn right on Copperhill Road \nStay on Copperhill until you get to San Francisquito Road. Turn Left. Meet Dianne on the shoulder on the right side as soon as you turn on to San Francisquito Road. \nWhile driving once we leave the meeting spot\, Be careful on this road…it is a dangerous road where people speed and take chances\, and do dangerous passing of other cars.\nDon’t be a statistic \nFYI: Powerhouse 2 Address:\n32400 San Francisquito Road\nSanta Clarita\, CA 91390 \nIf you are late\, you might try to catch up with us here. \n1) Just beyond the powerhouse\, there will be a turnout with K-rails. This is the lower entrance to the dam site. This is where late comers MIGHT be able to catch up with us.Do NOT go past the stop sign. If you reach the stop sign\, you will have gone too far. \nDirections…..take McBean Parkway all the way north to Copper Hill Road. Turn right. Turn left at San Francisquito Road. Dianne will meet you at the right side of the road\, and we will carpool to the bottom of the dam site entrance. We will make one quick stop at the Power House 2 turnout. DO NOT PULL INTO THE PARKING LOT FOR POWER HOUSE \nAlternate directions: \nTake the I-5 freeway north. Exit Newhall Ranch Road/Copper Hill\, turn right. \nStay on Copperhill until you get to San Francisquito Road. Turn Left\nFind Dianne on the right side of the road in the pull out area. There should be other cars there. Be prompt.\nOnce we leave the meeting spot\, please be careful on this road…it is a dangerous road where people speed and take chances/ pass when it’s not safe\, and speed. Many deaths occur on this road.\nDon’t be a statistic\, be safe \nCELL SERVICE: There is NONE. Once you return to Copper Hill Road\, you will most likely have your service restored. \nNOTE:.Mulholland built 19 dams in the Los Angeles area\, and this is the only one that failed. GEOLOGY is why it failed. SUMMARY:Sisar Canyon Road to White Ledge Campground
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nThis scenic out-and-back trail in the Los Padres National Forest offers a perfect blend of accessibility and wilderness character. The well-maintained fire road climbs steadily through Sisar Canyon\, gaining about 2\,300 feet over roughly 5 miles to reach White Ledge Camp. The wide path makes for easy navigation while still providing that satisfying sense of getting into the backcountry. Along the way\, you’ll pass through diverse vegetation zones—from chaparral-covered slopes to shaded oak groves—with occasional glimpses of the surrounding ridges. The steady grade makes this an excellent conditioning hike\, though it can feel exposed and hot in summer months. \nWhite Ledge Camp itself is a backcountry campsite\, tucked into a peaceful canyon setting with a few shaded campsites and a seasonal creek (which is likely dry this time of year). The camp makes a great turnaround point for day hikers or serves as a quiet overnight spot for those wanting to extend the adventure. While the fire road surface might not offer the rugged single-track experience some prefer\, the trade-off is a reliable\, well-graded trail that’s perfect for building endurance or introducing friends to backcountry hiking. It’s a solid choice when you want good elevation gain without technical challenges\, and the relatively quiet nature of this trail compared to more popular Ventura County hikes is definitely a bonus. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 24\, 2024 (rescheduled date due to weather) -Out and Back Hike – Red Cliff to Nightmare Gulch\, Red Rock Canyon\, Cantil CA – a FUN DESERT ADVENTURE (Weather Permitting) \nHike leader volunteers: Paul H\, and Gary S. \nHiking Distance: ~ 6 to 7 ish miles\n**Hike Ranking: (*Level 2/Beginner/Intermediate)(see chart below):*) \nTime: ~ Approx 4-5 hours hiking including one snack break\nConditioning: you need to be in generally good physical condition\, OK with possible mud and rocks as well a possible water puddles. \nDogs : Dogs allowed only in picnic area\, campground\, and primitive roads. Dogs not allowed on trails. \nRestrooms: At the Trail head\nAdventure Pass: There is a 6 dollar fee per car\, but last time I was the the Iron Ranger Ticket booth was out of order. \nDESCRIPTION: The Club has traditionally kicked off the year with a hike in this area. In the past\, this has typically been a 10-mile loop\, but this year we’re trying a new 7-mile out-and-back option that hikers of all experience levels can enjoy. \nOur route is not entirely on a designated trail and will include traveling up a recently active stream-bed. We’ll begin at the Red Cliffs Trailhead and make our way to Nightmare Gulch\, where we’ll experience spectacular sandstone formations. The terrain is mostly flat\, but with numerous offshoots\, so it will be important for the group to stay together.\nOn the way to and from the gulch\, we’ll cross an open desert area that has already been brought to life by recent rains and warm temperatures. With a bit of luck\, we’ll be greeted by early wildflowers\, colorful scenery\, and capped off with unique rock formations along the way. \nWEAR: Expect cold windy weather in the Desert; hike will start early and may be chilly to start. Dress in layers\, bring extra outerwear just in case. We recommend winter hat/ scarf\, GLOVES!!\, a WINDPROOF outer layer\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, hiking shoes/boots with thread and hiking poles. Also bring Snacks and 2 – 3 liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets; camera\, hat and sunscreen. SUMMARY:Vasquez Rocks Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:This 11.7-mile lollipop route including a section of the Pacific Crest Trail offers a compelling journey through one of Southern California’s most distinctive geological landscapes. The moderately challenging route takes an average of 6 hours to complete\, delivering hikers through lush desert canyons\, dramatic rock formations\, and seasonal creek crossings before culminating at the iconic Vasquez Rocks—those striking sandstone slabs tilted at impossible angles that you’ve undoubtedly seen in countless films and TV shows. \nThe trail’s highlight is its passage through Escondido Canyon\, where the PCT descends into a beautiful riparian corridor with possible water crossings during wet seasons Around the 2.7-mile mark\, you’ll encounter one of the hike’s most unusual features: a tall\, unlit tunnel that carries the trail beneath Highway 14. Just north of this tunnel\, hikers often find excellent spots for rest breaks\, and midway through the hike on the southern side\, there’s a small cave or overhang perfect for lunch. The route rewards you with panoramic views from ridgelines and the opportunity to spot wildlife ranging from crows to rattlesnakes\, with spring bringing spectacular wildflower displays\, particularly California poppies carpeting the south-facing slopes. \nThe Vasquez Rocks themselves were formed approximately 25 million years ago when the collision of the North American and Pacific tectonic plates uplifted sedimentary layers along the Elkhorn Fault. These coarse-grained sandstone formations accumulated from debris flows that eroded from the nearby San Gabriel and Sierra Pelona Mountains\, creating alluvial fan deposits that were later buried\, compressed\, and dramatically tilted by ongoing seismic activity. The park holds deep cultural significance as well—it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 due to its importance as a prehistoric site for the Shoshone and Tataviam people.
