SUMMARY:Get your Water Shoes out! Fish Canyon to Piano Box Canyon
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nThis is a beautiful area containing 37 types of endangered species. It is prime yellow-legged frog and Arroyo Toad Habitat. Bring your camera. Not only is the area beautiful\, but you might see some of the endangered species along the way. Please stay on the trails here and watch where you step during the stream crossings. The hike starts on an abandoned asphalt road\, moves onto a dirt road at the north end of Castaic Lake and follows Fish Canyon. The only major hill is the asphalt road coming back up to the cars\, the trail is fairly level the rest of the way. The trail through Fish Canyon is interspersed with portions of the old cement road from the 1930s. Then we split off the main trail for the trail to Piano Box Canyon\, a beautiful single track wooded trail. We will snack and rest in Piano box and have ample time to enjoy the canyon walls of reddish/orange rock before returning. \nDETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Paul\, Gary.\n· Meet: 37773 Templin Highway at 8:30 am\, departure at 8:35 am sharp (July 5).\n· Distance: ~ 8 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 500′\n· Time: Approximately 4 hours hiking including a snack break.\n· Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Dogs are welcome but need to be on a leash. DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: This is a 6.2-mile out-and-back trail near La Canada Flintridge\, California. Generally considered a moderately challenging route. Approximately. the first 3/4 mile will be on a paved road. There is a decent amount of shade. This is a very popular area for birding\, hiking\, and mountain biking. There could be a lot of mountain bikers on this trail\, hikers do have the right of way\, but we will need to step aside to let them pass us. \nIf you are not a fan of lots of people\, mountain bikers and walking on a paved road\, then this is not the hike for you. If you do not mind and want to enjoy taking in some nature hanging with fellow hikers\, I will see you on the trail. 🙂 \nDETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Michele E\n· Meet: First Parking lot off of N. SUMMARY:Mt. Pinos to Sawmill Mt. and maybe Grouse.
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: We will take you away from the summer heat of SCV\, dropping ~20 degrees to enjoy alpine views while listening to the wind gently caress huge pines. \nStarting at the Nordic Hut lot / trailhead (8340′)\, first we summit Mt. Pinos (8847′) and then after descending some switchbacks\, we ascend again to summit Sawmill Mountain (8806′). We’ll decide as a group when we arrive at Sawmill whether to go on to Grouse Mountain (8673’) or enjoy a snack there before returning the same way. \nThe views from Mount Pinos / Sawmill Peak are beautiful\, including the patchwork quilt of agriculture in the San Joaquin Valley to the north\, the Tehachapi’s to the east\, and the Carrizo Plain and Temblor Mountains to the northwest. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Mt. Pinos Nordic Base at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Revised to July 26).\nDistance: Approximately 7 – 10 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,414 – 2\,060 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.5 – 5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.\nRestrooms: None.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing.
