SUMMARY:Towsley Canyon Loop Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: WEEKDAY HIKE! This hike has an amazing variety of sites and smells including strange geologic formations\, frothy streambeds\, tar pits\, and many different plant communities. The Tataviam people used the naturally occurring asphalt for healing purposes and to seal their basketry. At about the 0.9 mile you will encounter a slot-like canyon called the Narrows which contains layers of nearly vertical rock formations. After the passage through the narrows stay left\, then after another 200 yards stay left again and climb the switchbacks to the left that is called the Towsley Canyon Loop Trail. Topping out at 2\,450 feet\, the trail begins a steep winding descent and includes breathtaking views of lush hillsides and canyons as it heads into Wiley Canyon. Joining a dirt road turn left and head down the canyon. After almost a mile of hiking take the Canyon View Loop Trail to the left which traverses over a summit and takes you back down to Ed Davis Park by the ranger station. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Towsley Park Parking Lot at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (May 9).\nDistance: Approximately 6.2 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,466 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.\nRestrooms – None.\nAdventure Pass – None Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:LOCAL NEWHALL HIKE: Gates Trail\, Pine Street\, Romo Trail\, and Needham Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: NEW LOCAL AFTERNOON HIKE! \nBusy on Mother’s Day (Sunday)? Then join us SATURDAY for a quick local LATER AFTERNOON hike in the Needham Ranch/Gates King Open Space in the hills south of Lyons/Newhall Avenue. \nThis is a pretty easy hike distance and elevation wise – only 700 feet of elevation and 3.4 miles\, but it it STEEP climbing near the peak – so that will get your heart pumping a bit. \nThis is apparently a new local hike option\, so we’ll explore it for the first time as a group. Parts of it may be underwhelming\, and some parts near flat\, and we’ll be following the railroad tracks for a while before climbing\, but what else you got to do Saturday anyway? \nWe’ll end up on the peaks overlooking the San Fernando Valley\, just north of the 5/14 interchange. \nLet’s meet up at 2:45 pm\, and we’ll be on the trail by 2:55 – so don’t be late! Expect 2 hours of hiking\, plus a short break at the top for a snack. \nALL TRAILS WRITE UP:\nExperience this 3.4-mile out-and-back trail near Newhall\, California. Generally considered a moderately challenging route\, it takes an average of 1 h 42 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking\, horseback riding\, and mountain biking\, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are June through August. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas. \nALL TRAILS REVIEW SUMMARY:\nRecent reviews describe it as empty\, peaceful\, and not very exciting. The trail is noted to be steep but short\, offering a beautiful view of multiple counties in SoCal. Some parts of the trail may be lost or washed out\, but easy to find again. Conditions mentioned in the last month include blooming flowers\, greenery\, and cool temperatures in the afternoon. The trail is considered a hidden gem\, with few other hikers encountered. Hiking poles are recommended\, and it is a great trail for dogs. Typically in May\, the area is likely to be green and cool\, with blooming flowers\, making it a good time for hiking. \nTemperatures are expected to be in the low 80’s on Saturday. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader: Gary S.\nDistance: Approximately 3.4 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 698 feet.\nTime: Approximately 2-1/2 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are welcome but need to be on a leash.\nRestrooms – None.\nAdventure Pass – None Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We may not have a sweep\, so we ask that you all be prepared to hike at a brisk pace and stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. \nESSENTIAL GEAR:\nHiking boots and poles.\nClothing layers recommended.\nSnacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets.\nHat and sunscreen. \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 2\,\nBeginner/Intermediate: 1-7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain. As we traverse the trail\, we will encounter a diverse array of geological features\, showcasing the area’s complex tectonic history. The hike leads us through ancient sedimentary layers\, evidence of the region’s marine past millions of years ago\, while also exposing them to the effects of more recent faulting and uplift\, sculpting dramatic cliffs and canyons along the way. \nAt the pinnacle of the hike stands the Devils Chair\, a striking rock formation perched precariously on the edge of a sheer cliff. This geological marvel is a testament to the forces of erosion and weathering that have shaped the landscape over millennia. From this vantage point\, hikers can behold breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys\, offering a glimpse into the geological processes that continue to shape this dynamic and ever-changing terrain. \nMeet your leader at the Trail Head: Meet at the Parking Lot near the trail head at 8:00AM for an 8:15 AM SHARP departure. \n· What3Words Map and Navigation (///replant.appreciated.works)\n· GPS Location: (34.413873784621266\, -117.85865452742534):\n· Address: 28000 Devil’s Punchbowl Rd Valyermo\, CA 93563 \nBring: Lunch/ snack\, lots of water (2 – 3 liters)\, and a camera. \nWear: Layered clothing\, hat\, sunscreen\, shoes with good tread\, and long pants because there is a lot of Poodle Dog Bush along the trail. \nOther Notes: Most of the trail is a single-track out to the Devils Chair and if hiking along steep trails freaks you out this is not the trail for you. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. The trail through Fish Canyon is interspersed with portions of the old cement road from the 1930s.
