It’s an out and back trail that not only delivers scenic panoramas but a great work out as well. \nHike leader volunteers: Tim R. \nMeet: Whitney Canyon Park (where Newhall Ave dead ends just past the 14 Freeway) at 8:00am\, departure at 8:15 am sharp. \nDistance: Approximately 9.6 miles. \nElevation gain: Approximately 2109 feet. \nTime: Approximately 5 hours hiking including one snack break (brisk pace). \nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition (this is not a beginner hike). \nDogs: Must be on leash. \nRestrooms – None at park. \nAdventure Pass: Not required. \nWARNINGS: \n\nNo stream crossings.\n\nESSENTIAL GEAR:\n· Hiking shoes/boots/poles.\n· Layers recommended. SUMMARY:Ridge Loop through Nightmare Gulch\, Red Rock Cyn (CANTIL/MOJAVE).
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 13\, 2024 – ALL DAY HIKE – Ridge Loop through Nightmare Gulch\, Red Rock Canyon\, Cantil CA – a FULL DAY DESERT ADVENTURE (Weather Permitting) \nHike leader volunteers: Paul H\, Gary S.\, Dianne H.\nHiking Distance: ~9 miles (Level 3/Intermediate difficulty)\nRating: Moderate ++/ Strenuous (experienced/qualified hikers only)\nGain/ Loss: ~ 1250′ / 1179′\, however we start at 2600′ shooting up to a 3000′ ridgeline\nTime: ~ Approx 4-5 hours hiking including one snack break\nConditioning: you need to be in generally good physical condition\nDogs and Kids: Not encouraged. Message Leader if you want to bring either.\nRestrooms: None\nAdventure Pass: Not Required \nDESCRIPTION: This is a geologically beautiful area\, only open part of the year. Our loop route is not on a fixed trail\, but does not include bouldering or difficult topography. The hike begins with a steep climb up and over three ridges. These afford some fabulous views of the entire area. After we climb down the 3rd ridge\, we’ll stop for a break at the East end of Nightmare Gulch. The rest of the hike takes us down through the Gulch – high walls and spectacular sandstone rock formations\, mainly flat\, but with lots of off-shoots\, so we need to stay together. At the exit from the Gulch\, we cross an open area of desert for a final uphill climb to the parking area. \nWEAR: Expect cold windy weather; hike will take us to 3\,000 ft. Dress in layers\, bring extra outerwear just in case. We recommend winter hat/ scarf\, GLOVES!!\, a WINDPROOF outer layer\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, hiking shoes/boots with thread and hiking poles. Also bring Snacks and 2 – 3 liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets; camera\, hat and sunscreen. You will see cars parked there. Located in the Red Rock Canyon State Recreation Area\, Cantil\, CA 93519. Be at the trailhead at 9:00AM\, so we can depart up the trail at 9:15AM SHARP. DESCRIPTION:***** RAIN OR SNOW FALLING AT TRAIL-HEAD CANCELS THIS HIKE ****** \nSummary: This is a moderately challenging 6-1/2 mile Level 3 (Intermediate) loop hike with 1620 feet of elevation climb. We’ll hike at a moderately brisk 2-1/2 mph pace\, taking about 3-1/2 hours to complete including a 20 minute snack break at the Coquina Mine Quarry site. All hikers should be able to keep up with the pace of the group\, or you may be asked to sign out if you cannot keep pace. \nSite Info: This hike is located in the hills of Simi Valley\, California\, north of the 118 Freeway. We’ll start up the Los Llajas trail from the trailhead\, and climb\, then switch trails to the Coquina Mine Trail. Explore an abandoned quarry site with heavy mining equipment. The geology of the area is a mix of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks\, including sandstone\, shale\, and limestone. The rocks at the Coquina Mine Trail have been subjected to various geologic processes over millions of years\, including erosion\, uplift\, and tectonic activity. These processes have created the unique geological features that are visible along the trail\, including exposed rock layers\, rock formations\, and geological structures and should make for interesting hike. \nHike leader volunteers: Gary S (Julie Assisting)\nDogs: OK\, if well behaved around other dogs/ people with hiking poles and on a leash.\nRestrooms – None\nAdventure Pass: Not required.\nBring: This is a fully exposed rocky trail\, so wear appropriate hiking shoes/boots.
