SUMMARY:ARIZONA: Havasupai (~50 Miles RT+)
DESCRIPTION:Bucket list trip! \nIt’s finally time to cross off Havasupai! This is not a beginner trip. We will be moving at an advanced pace. To attend this event\, you and I must have previous trip history together\, no exceptions. Feel free to contact me! \nPlease add yourself to the wait-list to indicate interest. \nThese dates are tentative pending permits\, but this is the time-frame I’m targeting. Flexibility is required. It will be warmer\, but we will maximize the opportunity to swim and enjoy the water. We will utilize cooler hours for most foot-travel. \nYou must be able to manage yourself and your transportation. This trip has minimal guidance involving anything off-trail. It may be possible to plan ridesharing by communicating with other attendees. \nThe trip leader will not be traveling back to California after this event and is unable to facilitate rideshares. \nAs this trip is out of state\, communication is critical. If you are attending but have not connected with the group in Flagstaff prior to trail start\, you will be left behind. There is sporadic phone service or no service\, therefore if something comes up\, you must communicate with the group as early as possible. \n\nTotal roundtrip distance: ~50 miles+ \nMore information to come. \nDISCLAIMER: Anything to do with any part of this trip (including hiking\, swimming\, and kayaking) are done at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! Make sure you are in good enough physical shape for the distance\, elevation changes\, and terrain. There is significant (>2000’) climbing most days – this is not a flat walk. This trip will be conducted at a relaxed pace with no more than 12 miles each day. SUMMARY:Anza Borrego Not So Epic (3rd day optional)
DESCRIPTION:This is Jerry Schad’s Indian Canyon / Borrego Palm Canyon Traverse.\nBack in 2021 I made this a loop and it may have been a little bit too epic 🙂\n(https://www.meetup.com/sandiegobackpackers/events/269364126/?eventOrigin=group_calendar) \nThis trip starts from third crossing. First night camp is Bennis Bowl. If you want to do a nice beginner trip you can join us for the first night. Or you can do the fun part and hike up Indian Canyon and down Borrego Palm Canyon. This is a car shuttle. \n“This is a grand tour of one of Anza-Borrego’s most remote\, rugged\, and beautiful areas. In the midsection of this trip\, you’ll pass through a pristine wilderness where the tracks of a mountain lion are far more common than the impressions of a lug-soled boot.”\nJerry Schad – Afoot and Afield: San Diego Country: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide \nDifficulty: Strenuous Backpacking Trip\nType of hike: Difficult Class 3. Rugged cross country hiking. Streams\, boulders\, dry falls\, brush\, loose rock\, etc. \nThis hike is a bit of a bushwhack. Long pants and long sleeves highly recommended! I will bring shears to trim cats claw 🙂 \nWeather \nDay 1 (Saturday)\nMeet at the corner of Montezuma Valley Road and Palm Canyon Dr.\n33.25645\, -116.39856\nShuttle to the closure of Coyote Canyon Rd.\n33.36880\, -116.42124\nDistance: 5.6mi\nElevation Gain/Loss: 1100’/0′\nHike up Coyote Canyon from the road closure\, to Sheep Canyon\, to Indian Canyon. There is water in Coyote Canyon and Indian Canyon.\nGAIA Route \nDay 2 (Sunday)\nDistance: 7.2mi\nElevation Gain/Loss: 3200’/3400′\nHike up ridge from Indian Canyon to Palm Mesa (sadly no palm trees there). Descend down north fork of Borrego Palm Canyon to the middle fork. There is water in the middle fork and lovely bathtub to soak in.\nWe may decide to camp a couple miles earlier at the merge of the north and middle fork depending on how people are feeling.\nThis is a difficult hike. If you’re not up to it there should be no problem to turn back and go back to the first camp. Please do not overexert yourself.\nGAIA Route \nDay 3 (Monday)\nDistance: 4.7mi\nElevation Gain/Loss: 0’/1450′\nDescend the rest of Borrego Palm Canyon to the cars.\nGAIA Route \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. SUMMARY:Rockhouse Canyon Anza Borrego
DESCRIPTION:Overnight trip up Rockhouse Canyon\nDid this last year and found the spring! Hike up Rockhouse Canyon to a wonderful campsite among the cottonwoods. \nDescription from Afoot and Afield:\nRockhouse Canyon and the broad\, sloping alluvial basin drained by it-informally known as Rockhouse Valley -constitute one of Southern California’s truly forgotten places. Prior to the 20th century\, Cahuilla Indian villages thrived here. After the Cahuilla moved to the nearby Santa Rosa Indian Reservation around 1900\, a few hardy prospectors made forays into the area\, traveling along the ancient footpaths and\, in some cases\, living in the old rock houses built by the Cahuilla. Today\, there is\nstill no road beyond the lower reaches of Rockhouse Canyon. The closest inhabited place is several miles away. \nTrack from last year\nSpring location\nCheck out photos from November 2023\n2022 Trip \nMax and I plan on camping somewhere in Clark Valley on Friday night. Then on Saturday morning we can caravan to the trailhead. \nMileage: ~20 miles round trip and 3400ft elevation gain (assuming we are able to drive as far as last time) \nWeather: https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-116.3696721127042&lat=33.45765553887085#.Y1IWkOzMJyA \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. SUMMARY:Wind Caves - The Domelands (Anza Borrego Desert)
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate Backpacking Trip (only because it’s a Dry Camp)\nMilage: 7 – 14 miles (depending on route)\nSome Cross country hiking.\nAscent: +700-1000 ft\nHigh clearance vehicles recommended….but we have seen regular car make it. \nDry camp (no water)\nMaps/GPX files/Google map \nFrom last year trip. \nInstagram Video) \nThere are several places in Anza-Borrego State Park where exposed sandstone layering has been slowly eroded by the wind to create odd and whimsical-shaped formations. Near Split Mountain\, there are some formations that have a rather sinister look to them. The formations also seem to resemble buildings from the fictional town of Bedrock\, which was the hometown of America’s favorite prehistoric family\, The Flintstones. This place is known as the Wind Caves and can be visited by following a loop-trail hike. \nNot only does this hike take in the Wind Caves\, but it also offers outstanding views of the heavily eroded Carrizo Badlands to the west. These badlands look like a choppy sea with large waves frozen in place. Naturally\, there is classic desert vegetation growing profusely along the trail \nNO WATER ON THE TRAIL ( we must carry all of our water) \nTotal milage 12 + \nDay 1 \nMeet: We will meet at the Chevron Station @ 9:am \n1071 Imperial Hwy\,\nOcotillo\, CA 92259\n32.730716\, -115.994637 \n•We will caravan to the trailhead @9:15am \n• We will hike about 4.5 miles basecamp. \n• Hike to the wind caves 2. SUMMARY:ARIZONA: Superstition Wilderness Backpack
DESCRIPTION:Backpacking in the Arizona (Sonoran) desert at low/moderate elevation. The Superstition Wilderness is located east of Phoenix. Expect to see a lot of red rocks\, cactus\, etc. The wilderness has a well developed trail system and is quite popular (in winter). Itinerary is tentative\, flexible\, and may change depending on the water availability\, ranger advice\, and group preferences. This trip will be conducted at a relaxed pace with no more than 12 miles each day. Your trip leader walks slowly\, likes to stop and breathe and appreciate nature\, and take pictures. This is a trip in the desert – there will only be water at the camps\, be prepared for both heat and cold (snow is possible). The days will be short and the weather can be unpredictable. \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be prepared and self-sufficient. The hike leaders in this group aren’t professional hike leaders. SUMMARY:Wind Caves - The Domelands (Anza Borrego Desert) DAY HIKE
DESCRIPTION:TRAINING HIKE Day Hike this (SUNDAY 1/19/25)\nMilage: 7 – 8 miles LOOP\nSome Cross country hiking.\nAscent: +700-1000 ft\nHigh clearance vehicles recommended….but we have seen regular car make it. \nFrom last year trip. \nInstagram Video \nThere are several places in Anza-Borrego State Park where exposed sandstone layering has been slowly eroded by the wind to create odd and whimsical-shaped formations. Naturally\, there is classic desert vegetation growing profusely along the trail \nNO WATER ON THE TRAIL ( we must carry all water)\nBRING LUNCH/SNACK \nTotal milage 8 + \nAlltrails Map \nMeet: We will meet at the Domelands Trailhead Turnoff \n32°46’44.6″N 116°05’23.5″W \n•We will caravan to the trailhead @9:30am \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! This is an intermediate hike.
