SUMMARY:Gardiner Basin - 5 day tour including Rae Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Gardiner Basin Loop Tour with Rae Lakes. I am posting this trip to gauge interest from the club\, please add your name to the waiting list if you want to join. Potential attendees will be screened and manually added based on experience and history with the group. \nThis trip passes through some of the most beautiful parts of the Sierras including Rae Lakes. The loop will take us from Onion Valley over Kearsarge pass and across the PCT to Charlotte Lake\, then over Gardiner Pass into Gardiner basin\, then turning eastward to cross into Sixty Lakes Basin\, rejoin the PCT north of Rae Lakes\, follow the PCT south through Rae Lakes and then back to Onion Valley. \nTHIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TRIP. The majority of the trip is an off-the-maintained-trail-system loop requiring navigational skills. It is also high altitude\, starting at Onion Valley (9200) and going up from there. We will cross 5 high passes (Kearsarge (11\,800)\, Gardiner (11\,200)\, Sixty Lakes Col (11\,700)\, Glen Pass (11\,900)\, and then Kearsarge again) over 5 days. Sixty Lakes Col is a class 2 scramble. Daily mileage is around 8 – 12 miles per day\, shorter while in the basin to allow side trips. Bear barrels are required. Previous backpacking experience in the Sierras a must\, preferably recently as altitude acclimatization is required. \nItinerary:\nSunday Sept 15th – drive to Onion Valley (approximately 7 hours drive from San Diego)\, camp at Grays Meadow Campground (car camp\, on road up to Onion Valley Trailhead) \nMonday Sept 16th – Enter wilderness via Onion Valley Trailhead\, over Kearsarge Pass to Charlotte Lake. From start at Onion Valley (9200′) over Kearsarge pass (11\,800) 8.3 miles\, elevation gain/loss 2745/1539 \nTuesday Sept 17th – Over Gardiner pass into Gardiner basin\, camp in the basin. From start at Charlotte Lake (10400′) over Gardiner pass (11\,262) and descend to Gardiner Creek (8900) 6.6 miles\, elevation gain/loss 1757/3122. Should have time to explore Gardiner Basin after setting camp. \nWednesday Sept 18th – From Gardiner creek (8900) follow the creek upstream to lake 11407\, then over Sixty Lakes Col (11\,732) and descend into Sixty Lakes Basin to camp there. 6.8 miles\, elevation gain/loss 2800/1270. Short mileage as the climb over the col may be challenging. \nThursday Sept 19th – From Sixty Lakes Basin (10630) over Arrowhead Gap (also noted as basin notch on some maps) to rejoin PCT north of Rae lakes at Arrowhead lake\, proceed south through Rae lakes and over Glen Pass (11991) to camp at Kearsarge Lakes. 10.7 miles\, \, elevation gain/loss 2672/2304 \nFriday Sept 20th – Back to Onion Valley Trailhead. 5.7 mi\, over Kearsarge pass (11818) and down to parking lot (9200). Any vehicles exceeding the allotted 10 will pay a parking fee upon park entry. Additional parking may be allowed by the park at site CA1 or in designated parking areas throughout the grounds within walking distance. \nPLEASE READ:\nFree parking will be first come\, first served. (All parking has been claimed as of July 17\, 2024.)\nAfter paying MeetUp attendance fee\, please open the following spreadsheet and add your information to claim a free parking spot. \nCar Park Sign-Up \nAgua Caliente is located in Anza-Borrego and has geothermally heated springs! The facilities host three naturally fed pools\, two are cooled and one is 102°. Children are not allowed into the hottest pool but may enjoy the two cooler ones. \nThe park has paved roads kids enjoy riding bikes on. There are hiking trails nearby. \nAgua Caliente County Park \nGroup Site CA1 has a large BBQ\, five individual BBQs\, a large pavillion with shaded picnic tables\, and a large group fire pit. \nThere are showers in the spa room that take quarters to operate. Please bring quarters if you plan to use. It’s not too bad as a trail now but it’s not maintained. Kumeyaay people have inhabited the region for over 10\,000 years.\nMorteros can be viewed in the granite boulders at the West end of the camp. \nHiking around Bow Willow:\nBow Willow to Rockhouse\nThe first settlers of this area established cow camps around the 1890s. A cattleman built a rockhouse in 1933 within large boulders nearby. A trough for livestock can be found East of the rockhouse.\nThe loop is 7.5 miles\nBow Willow to Tree Groves\nThere are many groves near Bow Willow including the largest groves in the park. The Torote Bowl has 15 large Small-Leaf Elephant Trees (Torote).\n1.2 miles to Torote (one way).\nThere are other groves nearby to create a loop of 4 miles. These groves house California Fan Palms\, evidence of a wetter past.\n“The ancient Colorado River used to flow nearby. The area was a lush savannah. Zebras\, cheetahs\, camels\, mastodons\, sabertoothed cats\, horses\, and ancient dogs roamed the savannah. As the mountains rose\, the climate changed\, most of the animals died out. DESCRIPTION:To be considered\, you and I must have trip history together.\nPlease add yourself to the wait-list to indicate interest.\nThis is a difficult\, dry\, explorative backpack over rocky\, prickly terrain.\nI am looking for qualified team members who are interested in seeking out locations of historical or cultural significance. Additional qualifications include a go-with-the-flow attitude\, patience\, and the ability to scramble steep sections with a pack on in the desert without a trail.\nApproximately 15 miles with 3\,500′ gain.\nDifficult.\nCarry all water. \nI have this adventure on the table to take place this desert season\, HOWEVER\, the dates may change due to heavy scheduling or unfavorable weather. If you are qualified and interested\, please remain flexible. SUMMARY:Overnight backpacking trip to Whale Peak in Anza Borrego
DESCRIPTION:This is an Intermediate level trip due to some off-trail scrambling up Smugglers Canyon and the fact that it is overnight dry camping (all water for the trip must be carried). \nAt 10:00 am (12/18)\, we will meet up at the Pictographs Trailhead (search “Anza Borrego Pictographs Trailhead” in Google Maps). \nThe backpacking route can be found on All Trails at https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/whale-peak-via-pictograph-smuggler-s-canyon-trail \nWe will camp on top of Whale Peak for a beautiful view of the sunset and sunrise before heading back to the cars (12/19). There will be no water source available from the time we leave the cars to the time we return to the cars so you must carry all the water you will need. (Recommended at least 4 liters of water.)

The trail is great for hiking and normally takes 2-3 hours. You start off on the rough jeep trail down to a wash where you have the option to traverse through a slot canyon. Once to the mine area\, you can explore various rock formations and hike up to the tiptop for a fantastic view of the Salton Sea and the surrounding badlands. On the way back\, start out on the jeep track again and then venture the other way down the narrow canyon to meet back up with the original trail. This hike has a bit of everything! DESCRIPTION:TRAINING HIKE Day Hike this (SUNDAY 1/19/25)\nMilage: 7 – 8 miles LOOP\nSome Cross country hiking.\nAscent: +700-1000 ft\nHigh clearance vehicles recommended….but we have seen regular car make it. \nFrom last year trip. \nInstagram Video \nThere are several places in Anza-Borrego State Park where exposed sandstone layering has been slowly eroded by the wind to create odd and whimsical-shaped formations. Near Split Mountain\, there are some formations that have a rather sinister look to them. The formations also seem to resemble buildings from the fictional town of Bedrock\, which was the hometown of America’s favorite prehistoric family\, The Flintstones. This place is known as the Wind Caves and can be visited by following a loop-trail hike. \nNot only does this hike take in the Wind Caves\, but it also offers outstanding views of the heavily eroded Carrizo Badlands to the west. These badlands look like a choppy sea with large waves frozen in place. DESCRIPTION:Backpacking in the Arizona (Sonoran) desert at low/moderate elevation. The Superstition Wilderness is located east of Phoenix. Expect to see a lot of red rocks\, cactus\, etc. The wilderness has a well developed trail system and is quite popular (in winter). Water sources may be few and far between. \nItinerary (tentative) \nDay 1 (Sunday\, January 19th): Drive to Lost Dutchman State Park (https://azstateparks.com/lost-dutchman/) and meet/car camp there. \nDay 2: Backpack from First Water Trailhead to Charlebois Springs (reliable water); 8 miles\, +1225-1006 \nDay 3: Leave camp set up at Charlebois and day hike a loop around Bluff Spring Mountain with views of Miner’s Needle and Weaver’s Needle; 10 mi\, +1608 – 1692 \nDay 4: Backpack from Charlebois to Kane Spring; 11mi\, +2280 -1582 \nDay 5: Backpack from Kane to Charlebois; 6 mi\, +1090 – 1855 or to Second Water; 12 mi \nDay 6: Back to First Water Trailhead; 6-8 miles\, +1006 -1225\nDrive home in evening \nImportant notes:\nWeather may reschedule or cancel this trip. DESCRIPTION:Rsvp will open on January 1\, 2025 \nRyan campground\n2 sites are reserved (sites 15 & 16). 6 people and 2 cars per site.\nWill need to carpool.\nIf there are more people interested then more sites can be reserved. Need to bring your own water \nCampground is at 4\,300’ with unique rock formations. \nDays are short so tentative hikes include Ryan Mountain (3 miles) on Saturday and Lost Horse Mine Loop (6.5 miles) on Sunday. SUMMARY:Superstition Wilderness 3 Night Backpacking Trip
DESCRIPTION:Snow trip is canceled due to lack of snow so I decided to copy Rocky’s trip (ARIZONA: Superstition Wilderness Backpack) and explore somewhere new. \nDay 1 (Friday)\nDeanna and I are leaving San Diego at 8am and should arrive at First Water Trailhead at 4pm (Arizona time). We will hike to Charlebois Spring in the evening/night (8mi 1350ft). It will be a full moon!\nCharlebois is a reliable source of water.\nOthers are welcome to arrive earlier and grab us a good campsite 🙂\nGAIA Route \nDay 2-3 (Saturday and Sunday)\nThere are a couple good day hikes.\nWeaver’s Needle (13mi 2500ft)\nLoop around Music Mountain (12mi 3000ft)\nI’m thinking on Sunday afternoon we will move camp to La Barge Pool (5.5mi 550ft) \nDay 4 (Monday)\nClimb Battleship Mountain and hike back to cars (6.5mi 2000ft) \nWeather: https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-111.44290924072267&lat=33.48042216882928 \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk.
