SUMMARY:Meysan Lake via Whitney Portal [ADVANCED]
DESCRIPTION:***RSVPs will open APRIL 1\, 2024. Add yourself to the waitlist and I will manually add at that time.*** \nMeysan Lake Trail starting from Whitney Portal\nhttps://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/inyo/recreation/hiking/recarea/?recid=20804&actid=50 \nWARNING:\nThis is a CHALLENGING and STRENUOUS trail that is rocky and extremely steep. Ultralight backpacking strongly recommended. Please be trained\, in shape\, and acclimated to this high elevation before attending. Mosquitoes will likely be bad\, and it will be pretty exposed. In fact\, there is no tree cover at all at the campsite up at Meysan Lake. \nTrail Stats: \n\nMileage: 10-11 miles round trip\nStarting elevation: 8\,000 feet\nEnding elevation: 11\,600 feet\nElevation gain: 3\,600+ (there is a little bit of loss and gain at the end)\nWater source: Meysan Lake and potential for various streams crossing trail.\nBear Canisters: not required\, but recommended (https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd937100.pdf)\n\nItinerary: \n\nFriday\, June 28: camp at Whitney Portal campground or if you can’t get a site\, stay in Lone Pine or disperse camp in Alabama Hills.\nSaturday\, June 29: meet at Whitney Portal Store at 8am\, try to hit trail by 9am. Hike 5 to 5.5 miles over about 4\,000 feet of elevation gain to Meysan Lake. Set up camp and enjoy the views of Mt. Mallory and Mt. Irvine While you rest or explore around the lake.\nSunday\, June 30: pack up and hike down to the portal. Grab food or souvenirs at the Store if open. If not\, go get food down in Lone Pine.\n\nBe sure to bring:\n– Sun protection (clothing and sunscreen. If you have one of those reflective umbrellas i might recommend that too).\n– Microspikes: there may still be snow or ice on the trail (we can check on this when we get closer to the trip whether or not we will need these).\n– Extra stakes and rope for your tent. It will be mostly rocks at the campsite so it may be difficult to secure it. NO HAMMOCKS.\n– InReach or some other way finding device. Apparently the top of the trail gets confusing and it may be easy to get off track. Download trail ahead of time before the trip to track however you like to track.\n– A wag bag (rocky granite terrain may not allow for typical Leave No Trace waste burial). \nLinks to learn more about the trail:\nInyo National Forest Fact Sheet: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd530479.pdf\nAllTrails:\n[https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/meysan-trail?sh=fzrxlq ](Meysan Trail on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/meysan-trail?sh=fzrxlq) \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! This is a moderate to intermediate hike. Make sure you are in good enough physical shape for the distance\, elevation changes\, and terrain. The hike leaders in this group aren’t professional hike leaders. SUMMARY:BACKPACKING 101 (CUYAMACA): Sweetwater to Granite Springs
DESCRIPTION:This is a Beginner’s Backpacking trip.\nRSVP Opens: Saturday\, June 8\, 2024 8:00 AM\nSpace is very limited. \nAbout Me:\nI am not a professional guide or backpacking instructor.\nIn 2017 I asked a Facebook backpacking group in Virginia about learning how to backpack. Shortly after\, I met up with a stranger who showed me the ropes. I’ve been learning from those more experienced than I am\, and that’s still the way it is today. It’s finally time to return the favor!\nI joined San Diego Backpackers in 2020. I’ll be hosting a series of Backpacking 101 trips that progress in mileage. Other than that\, I specialize in leading out-of-state adventures and river trips. 🌼 \nPlease read the following in its entirety. \nSweetwater to Granite Springs in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park\nDifficulty: Moderate (Used often for beginning backpacking)\nTrail Description: Well maintained with a steady incline to camp\nLength: Approximately 8 miles total and 1\,100′ gain/loss\nCamp Description: Primitive sites with a pit toilet.\nWater: Seasonal spring with a pump\, recommended to carry all water.\nSunset: ~8:00PM\nHighs/Lows: 80s/50s \nPark requires fees. I will go ahead of time for recon\, park fee information (I believe it’s $5 per person)\, and information regarding the permits to use Granite Springs (first come\, first served). More information to come.\nPark Brochure\nAll Trails \n🌼 We’ll meet in the day picnic parking inside the Green Valley Campground at 10:00AM to check in and pay fees. (Time may change based on availability. Please be flexible.) After we square away park fees\, we’ll move our vehicles to the parking lot at the Harvey Moore Trailhead. \n🌼 There are no campfires allowed. To use a stove to prepare meals or drinks\, please obtain the required California Campfire Permit. Campfire permits are necessary to use a barbecue\, lantern\, or stove outside a developed recreation area.\nGet your free permit here. \nDuring our trip we will cover the following skills and more:\n(Some skills will be theory.)\n🌼 Leave No Trace principles\n🌼 Campsite selection\n🌼 Setting camp\n🌼 Filtering water\n🌼 Using the restroom\n🌼 Gear (preferences\, how to use\, etc.)\n🌼 Navigation\n🌼 Useful apps\n🌼 Personal locator beacons \nWhat should you bring?\nThe 10 Essentials\nGeneral Backpacking Check List\n🌼 Please be sure you are properly equipped for this trip and that all of your gear is in working order.\n🌼 If you are needing to borrow pieces of gear\, please let me know. Members of SDB have kindly offered to loan out some bits. There are also backpacking items available for rent at REI.\n🌼 Remember\, there may be no water available in camp. Please bring all of your water. This amount is totally dependent on you\, your physical fitness\, heat tolerance\, thirst levels\, perspiration levels\, desire for drinks in camp such as tea or breakfast coffee\, food prep needs\, etc. Please bring more than enough.\n🌼 Please bring adequate snacks and dinner. We’ll be breaking camp at 8:00AM\, please bring breakfast and snacks for the hike out.\n🌼 Option to host a Zoom Meeting prior to our trip to go over or review gear to be sure everyone is set. \nLastly\, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. Let’s go backpacking! \n\nBy participating in this event\, you acknowledge you are ultimately responsible for yourself and your safety while engaging in this activity and event. \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! This is a beginner backpacking event. SUMMARY:Gardiner Basin - 5 day tour including Rae Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Gardiner Basin Loop Tour with Rae Lakes. I am posting this trip to gauge interest from the club\, please add your name to the waiting list if you want to join. Potential attendees will be screened and manually added based on experience and history with the group. \nThis trip passes through some of the most beautiful parts of the Sierras including Rae Lakes. The loop will take us from Onion Valley over Kearsarge pass and across the PCT to Charlotte Lake\, then over Gardiner Pass into Gardiner basin\, then turning eastward to cross into Sixty Lakes Basin\, rejoin the PCT north of Rae Lakes\, follow the PCT south through Rae Lakes and then back to Onion Valley. \nTHIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TRIP. The majority of the trip is an off-the-maintained-trail-system loop requiring navigational skills. It is also high altitude\, starting at Onion Valley (9200) and going up from there. We will cross 5 high passes (Kearsarge (11\,800)\, Gardiner (11\,200)\, Sixty Lakes Col (11\,700)\, Glen Pass (11\,900)\, and then Kearsarge again) over 5 days. Sixty Lakes Col is a class 2 scramble. Daily mileage is around 8 – 12 miles per day\, shorter while in the basin to allow side trips. Bear barrels are required. Previous backpacking experience in the Sierras a must\, preferably recently as altitude acclimatization is required. \nItinerary:\nSunday Sept 15th – drive to Onion Valley (approximately 7 hours drive from San Diego)\, camp at Grays Meadow Campground (car camp\, on road up to Onion Valley Trailhead) \nMonday Sept 16th – Enter wilderness via Onion Valley Trailhead\, over Kearsarge Pass to Charlotte Lake. From start at Onion Valley (9200′) over Kearsarge pass (11\,800) 8.3 miles\, elevation gain/loss 2745/1539 \nTuesday Sept 17th – Over Gardiner pass into Gardiner basin\, camp in the basin. From start at Charlotte Lake (10400′) over Gardiner pass (11\,262) and descend to Gardiner Creek (8900) 6.6 miles\, elevation gain/loss 1757/3122. Should have time to explore Gardiner Basin after setting camp. \nWednesday Sept 18th – From Gardiner creek (8900) follow the creek upstream to lake 11407\, then over Sixty Lakes Col (11\,732) and descend into Sixty Lakes Basin to camp there. 6.8 miles\, elevation gain/loss 2800/1270. Short mileage as the climb over the col may be challenging. \nThursday Sept 19th – From Sixty Lakes Basin (10630) over Arrowhead Gap (also noted as basin notch on some maps) to rejoin PCT north of Rae lakes at Arrowhead lake\, proceed south through Rae lakes and over Glen Pass (11991) to camp at Kearsarge Lakes. 10.7 miles\, \, elevation gain/loss 2672/2304 \nFriday Sept 20th – Back to Onion Valley Trailhead. 5.7 mi\, over Kearsarge pass (11818) and down to parking lot (9200). Should get back in time to drive back to San Diego. \nRoute details via CalTopo https://caltopo.com/m/072PR . Carpooling from San Diego to the trailhead will be arranged once the attendees have been finalized. \nDisclaimer: You are responsible for yourself and your safety. The trip leader is not a professional guide. You are responsible for making good decisions. Be prepared for the terrain\, weather\, distance\, and elevation. As with any trip\, the unexpected can happen including inclement weather. A go with the flow attitude is always a good thing. \nBy signing up for these events\, you agree not to hold the organizers responsible for whatever happens to you on the trip. The hiking group does not certify the expertise of the organizers or trip leaders. We are NOT responsible for any possible losses or injuries.
