SUMMARY:A16: Preparing to Climb Mt. Whitney Presentation
DESCRIPTION:This is a casual presentation courtesy of the A16 Foundation\, there is no trip leader. A great opportunity to hang out\, meet other backpackers\, and get ready for Whitney! Enjoy! \nA16 Foundation: Preparing to Climb Mt. Whitney with Jack and Betsy Northam\nWednesday\, May 22\n6:30PM “Meet n’ Drink” (food truck on site)\n7:00PM Video Presentation\nHelix Brewing Co\n8101 Commercial St\nLa Mesa\, CA \nhttps://adventure16.com/pages/events-1 \n“In this 85 minute video you’ll get plenty of valuable information about planning for your round trip on this iconic mountain. Jack and Betsy are veteran Whitney day-hikers and unofficial mountain ambassadors. As of June 2023\, perhaps better known as ‘Crazy Jack’ has safely summited the mountain over 200 times in just the past 24 years. Sometimes from start to finish all the way down in the town of Lone Pine. Betsy stops to smell and photograph the flowers so she’s only tallied nearly 70 successful climbs. Only? Once from the East Face technical rock climbing approach. So needless to say they know the mountain like the backs of their hands. They also know first hand the challenges you’ll face in the Summer and Fall and how to overcome them. Sometimes that means turning around\, and trying another day. Learn when that needs to happen. This video is a must for anyone who either has their ‘Whitney Zone’ permit in hand or is hoping to snag one at the last minute. Enjoy\, Learn & Be Inspired!”

SUMMARY:BACKPACKING 101 (CUYAMACA): Green Valley Campground to Arroyo Seco Primitive
DESCRIPTION:This is a Beginner’s Backpacking trip.\nRSVP Opens: Saturday\, June 8\, 2024 8:00 AM\nSpace is very limited. Please do not sign up for this trip if you are already confident hiking with your backpacking kit or using your backpacking kit. This trip is designed for those who want to take the plunge into backpacking. \nAbout Me:\nI am not a professional guide or backpacking instructor.\nIn 2017 I asked a Facebook backpacking group in Virginia about learning how to backpack. Shortly after\, I met up with a stranger who showed me the ropes. I’ve been learning from those more experienced than I am\, and that’s still the way it is today. It’s finally time to return the favor!\nI joined San Diego Backpackers in 2020. I’ll be hosting a series of Backpacking 101 trips that progress in mileage. Other than that\, I specialize in leading out-of-state adventures and river trips. 🌼 \nPlease read the following in its entirety. \nGreen Valley Campground to Arroyo Seco Primitive Trail Camp in\nCuyamaca Rancho State Park\nDifficulty: Easy\nTrail Description: Fire road\nLength: Approximately 1.5 miles and 300′ gain/loss (3 miles total)\nCamp Description: Primitive sites with a pit toilet.\nWater: Carry all of your water\, there is no water available in camp.\nSunset: ~8:00PM\nHighs/Lows: 80s/50s \nPark requires fees. I will go ahead of time for recon\, park fee information (I believe it’s $5 per person)\, and information regarding the permits to use Arroyo Seco (first come\, first served). More information to come.\nPark Brochure \n🌼 We’ll meet in the day picnic parking at the Arroyo Seco Fire Road trailhead inside the Green Valley Campground at 4:00PM. (Time may change based on availability. Please be flexible.) After we square away park fees\, we’ll begin our trek down the fire road. \n🌼 There are no campfires allowed. To use a stove to prepare meals or drinks\, please obtain the required California Campfire Permit. Campfire permits are necessary to use a barbecue\, lantern\, or stove outside a developed recreation area.\nGet your free permit here. \nDuring our trip we will cover the following skills and more:\n(Some skills will be theory.)\n🌼 Leave No Trace principles\n🌼 Campsite selection\n🌼 Setting camp\n🌼 Filtering water\n🌼 Using the restroom\n🌼 Gear (preferences\, how to use\, etc.) \nWhat should you bring?\nThe 10 Essentials\nGeneral Backpacking Check List\n🌼 Please be sure you are properly equipped for this trip and that all of your gear is in working order.\n🌼 If you are needing to borrow pieces of gear\, please let me know. Members of SDB have kindly offered to loan out some bits. There are also backpacking items available for rent at REI.\n🌼 Remember\, there is no water available in camp. Please bring all of your water. SUMMARY:Meysan Lake via Whitney Portal [ADVANCED]
DESCRIPTION:***RSVPs will open APRIL 1\, 2024. Add yourself to the waitlist and I will manually add at that time.*** \nMeysan Lake Trail starting from Whitney Portal\nhttps://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/inyo/recreation/hiking/recarea/?recid=20804&actid=50 \nWARNING:\nThis is a CHALLENGING and STRENUOUS trail that is rocky and extremely steep. Ultralight backpacking strongly recommended. Please be trained\, in shape\, and acclimated to this high elevation before attending. Mosquitoes will likely be bad\, and it will be pretty exposed. In fact\, there is no tree cover at all at the campsite up at Meysan Lake. \nTrail Stats: \n\nMileage: 10-11 miles round trip\nStarting elevation: 8\,000 feet\nEnding elevation: 11\,600 feet\nElevation gain: 3\,600+ (there is a little bit of loss and gain at the end)\nWater source: Meysan Lake and potential for various streams crossing trail.\nBear Canisters: not required\, but recommended (https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd937100.pdf)\n\nItinerary: \n\nFriday\, June 28: camp at Whitney Portal campground or if you can’t get a site\, stay in Lone Pine or disperse camp in Alabama Hills.\nSaturday\, June 29: meet at Whitney Portal Store at 8am\, try to hit trail by 9am. Hike 5 to 5.5 miles over about 4\,000 feet of elevation gain to Meysan Lake. Set up camp and enjoy the views of Mt. Mallory and Mt. Irvine While you rest or explore around the lake.\nSunday\, June 30: pack up and hike down to the portal. Grab food or souvenirs at the Store if open. If not\, go get food down in Lone Pine.\n\nBe sure to bring:\n– Sun protection (clothing and sunscreen. If you have one of those reflective umbrellas i might recommend that too).\n– Microspikes: there may still be snow or ice on the trail (we can check on this when we get closer to the trip whether or not we will need these).\n– Extra stakes and rope for your tent. It will be mostly rocks at the campsite so it may be difficult to secure it. NO HAMMOCKS.\n– InReach or some other way finding device. Apparently the top of the trail gets confusing and it may be easy to get off track. Download trail ahead of time before the trip to track however you like to track.\n– A wag bag (rocky granite terrain may not allow for typical Leave No Trace waste burial). \nLinks to learn more about the trail:\nInyo National Forest Fact Sheet: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd530479.pdf\nAllTrails:\n[https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/meysan-trail?sh=fzrxlq ](Meysan Trail on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/meysan-trail?sh=fzrxlq) \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. DESCRIPTION:This is a Beginner’s Backpacking trip.\nRSVP Opens: Saturday\, June 8\, 2024 8:00 AM\nSpace is very limited. \nSweetwater to Granite Springs in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park\nDifficulty: Moderate (Used often for beginning backpacking)\nTrail Description: Well maintained with a steady incline to camp\nLength: Approximately 8 miles total and 1\,100′ gain/loss\nCamp Description: Primitive sites with a pit toilet.\nWater: Seasonal spring with a pump\, recommended to carry all water.\nSunset: ~8:00PM\nHighs/Lows: 80s/50s \nPark requires fees. (Time may change based on availability. Please be flexible.) After we square away park fees\, we’ll move our vehicles to the parking lot at the Harvey Moore Trailhead. \n🌼 There are no campfires allowed. To use a stove to prepare meals or drinks\, please obtain the required California Campfire Permit. Campfire permits are necessary to use a barbecue\, lantern\, or stove outside a developed recreation area.\nGet your free permit here. \nDuring our trip we will cover the following skills and more:\n(Some skills will be theory.)\n🌼 Leave No Trace principles\n🌼 Campsite selection\n🌼 Setting camp\n🌼 Filtering water\n🌼 Using the restroom\n🌼 Gear (preferences\, how to use\, etc.)\n🌼 Navigation\n🌼 Useful apps\n🌼 Personal locator beacons \nWhat should you bring?\nThe 10 Essentials\nGeneral Backpacking Check List\n🌼 Please be sure you are properly equipped for this trip and that all of your gear is in working order.\n🌼 If you are needing to borrow pieces of gear\, please let me know. Members of SDB have kindly offered to loan out some bits. There are also backpacking items available for rent at REI.\n🌼 Remember\, there may be no water available in camp. Please bring all of your water. This amount is totally dependent on you\, your physical fitness\, heat tolerance\, thirst levels\, perspiration levels\, desire for drinks in camp such as tea or breakfast coffee\, food prep needs\, etc. Please bring more than enough.\n🌼 Please bring adequate snacks and dinner. We’ll be breaking camp at 8:00AM\, please bring breakfast and snacks for the hike out.\n🌼 Option to host a Zoom Meeting prior to our trip to go over or review gear to be sure everyone is set. \nLastly\, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
