SUMMARY:Rockhouse Canyon Anza Borrego
DESCRIPTION:Overnight trip up Rockhouse Canyon\nDid this last year and found the spring! Hike up Rockhouse Canyon to a wonderful campsite among the cottonwoods. \nDescription from Afoot and Afield:\nRockhouse Canyon and the broad\, sloping alluvial basin drained by it-informally known as Rockhouse Valley -constitute one of Southern California’s truly forgotten places. Prior to the 20th century\, Cahuilla Indian villages thrived here. After the Cahuilla moved to the nearby Santa Rosa Indian Reservation around 1900\, a few hardy prospectors made forays into the area\, traveling along the ancient footpaths and\, in some cases\, living in the old rock houses built by the Cahuilla. Today\, there is\nstill no road beyond the lower reaches of Rockhouse Canyon. The closest inhabited place is several miles away. \nTrack from last year\nSpring location\nI plan on camping somewhere in Clark Valley on Friday night. Then on Saturday morning we can caravan to the trailhead. The road to the trailhead is rough\, last year a Subaru Outback was able to get 2.5 miles from the end of the road and my Lexus GX was able to get to 1.5 miles. I don’t know what the condition of the road is this year. I plan on driving out there sometime in the next two weeks to check it out and chose a location for camping Friday night. \nMileage: ~20 miles round trip and 3400ft elevation gain (assuming we are able to drive as far as last year) \nWeather: https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-116.3696721127042&lat=33.45765553887085#.Y1IWkOzMJyA \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. SUMMARY:Wind Caves - The Domelands (Anza Borrego Desert)
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate Backpacking Trip (only because it’s a Dry Camp)\nMilage: 7 – 14 miles (depending on route)\nSome Cross country hiking.\nAscent: +700-1000 ft\nHigh clearance vehicles recommended….but we have seen regular car make it. \nDry camp (no water)\nMaps/GPX files/Google map \nFrom last year trip. \nInstagram Video) \nThere are several places in Anza-Borrego State Park where exposed sandstone layering has been slowly eroded by the wind to create odd and whimsical-shaped formations. Near Split Mountain\, there are some formations that have a rather sinister look to them. The formations also seem to resemble buildings from the fictional town of Bedrock\, which was the hometown of America’s favorite prehistoric family\, The Flintstones. This place is known as the Wind Caves and can be visited by following a loop-trail hike. \nNot only does this hike take in the Wind Caves\, but it also offers outstanding views of the heavily eroded Carrizo Badlands to the west. These badlands look like a choppy sea with large waves frozen in place. SUMMARY:Collins Valley Anza Borrego Overnight
DESCRIPTION:The road to Collins Valley washed out during the hurricane and is still closed to vehicles so this is a great opportunity to do an easy trip. There should still be plenty of flowers. I drove to the closed gate in October and a Subaru could easily make it\, not sure about a regular vehicle.\nLocation: End of open road \nRight now weather looks great. If it gets too hot I will cancel the trip.\nWeather \nFriday night: I’m going to camp out close to closed gate. \nSaturday:\nHike to Sheep Canyon Primitive campground 4mi 600ft Track\nThere was water in the lower part of Sheep Canyon in October. I am confident there is still water there. There has also been water in Indian Canyon every time I’ve been there.\nIn the afternoon explore Sheep Canyon (optional). See photos of Jerry Schad’s trip description. \nSunday:\nMaybe check out Cougar Canyon. Hike out. \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. SUMMARY:Total Eclipse! Eagle Rock Loop Arkansas
DESCRIPTION:April 8th 2024 is the last total eclipse in the lower 48 until 2044. What better way to experience it than on a backpacking trip? The Eagle Rock Loop is very close to the center and will experience 4 minutes of total eclipse. \nEagle Rock Loop\n27 miles 4100 feet\nUSFS Guide\nAlltrails\nFarOut\nGood YouTube video \nSaturday April 6th\nI’m flying to Dallas (DFW) arriving at 2:04PM (Frontier 1426)\nPick up rental car and drive to the trailhead (250 miles ~4.5 hours)\nI have rented a “mid-size SUV” so I’ll have room for 3 passengers.\nCamp near trailhead \nSunday April 7th\nHike half the trail counter clockwise (thinking of camp here ) \nMonday April 8th\nHike\nTotal eclipse at about 1:50pm (it will be hard to miss). I think we should be at Eagle Rock Vista by then.\nHike almost all the rest of the trail \nTuesday April 9th\nHike a few miles back to car\nDrive back to Dallas to catch 5:10pm flight (Frontier 2927) \nWARNINGS \n\nI have never backpacked anywhere other than California.\nThere is a significant chance of rain on this trip. April averages 6″ and 11 days of precipitation. Be prepared to hike in the rain.\nThere are many crossings of the Little Missouri River. The level can get too high to cross safely (see this video)\nThere are ticks and mosquitos. Spray your clothes with permethrin and bring insect repellant (DEET or Picaridin)\nIf you are flying remember you cannot bring fuel with you so you’ll have to purchase when you get there. Lighters and safety matches are allowed on the plane but not in checked bags. Power banks are also carry-on only.\n\nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! This is an intermediate hike. SUMMARY:A16: Preparing to Climb Mt. Whitney Presentation
DESCRIPTION:This is a casual presentation courtesy of the A16 Foundation\, there is no trip leader. A great opportunity to hang out\, meet other backpackers\, and get ready for Whitney! Enjoy! \nA16 Foundation: Preparing to Climb Mt. Whitney with Jack and Betsy Northam\nWednesday\, May 22\n6:30PM “Meet n’ Drink” (food truck on site)\n7:00PM Video Presentation\nHelix Brewing Co\n8101 Commercial St\nLa Mesa\, CA \nhttps://adventure16.com/pages/events-1 \n“In this 85 minute video you’ll get plenty of valuable information about planning for your round trip on this iconic mountain. Jack and Betsy are veteran Whitney day-hikers and unofficial mountain ambassadors. As of June 2023\, perhaps better known as ‘Crazy Jack’ has safely summited the mountain over 200 times in just the past 24 years. Sometimes from start to finish all the way down in the town of Lone Pine. Betsy stops to smell and photograph the flowers so she’s only tallied nearly 70 successful climbs. Only? Once from the East Face technical rock climbing approach. So needless to say they know the mountain like the backs of their hands. They also know first hand the challenges you’ll face in the Summer and Fall and how to overcome them. Sometimes that means turning around\, and trying another day. Learn when that needs to happen. This video is a must for anyone who either has their ‘Whitney Zone’ permit in hand or is hoping to snag one at the last minute. Enjoy\, Learn & Be Inspired!”
