SUMMARY:Los Pinetos at Walker Ranch Trailhead
DESCRIPTION:Come and Join me on my Christmas Break for an afternoon Intermediate (2.5 to 3 miles per hour) hike near Placerita Canyon Nature Center.Los Pinetos is one of my favorite trails that was destroyed a few years ago by a fire but has since regrown and is ready for us.Just a note here: I have not hiked it since January 2020 after it was first reopened\, but have hiked it many times before that and the trail was similar as before. \nDistance: 7 milesElevation Gain: 1800′Difficulty: Intermediate due to pace\, length and steepnessDogs: NoRestrooms: Maybe a pit toilet at trailheadWater Fountain: NoParking: Free on street\, a little limited but up the road is a dirt lot about 1/4 of mile in case there is no room by the trailheadTrail: Out and backSunset: 4:50 bring a light just to be safeWeather: Unusual windy\, rainy or heat will cancel the hike \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, are all on this hike. There is an exposed steep hill at the beginning of the hike where you will overheat even on a cool day\, it levels out after that into more shade and less steepness. \nBring: Make sure you wear proper hiking attire especially shoes and bring poles if you need them. An extra layer in case it gets chilly\, sunscreen\, hat sunglasses for the exposed areas\, also a snack for your break at the top\, light just to be safe!I suggest 2-3 liters of water\, some of the exposed steep parts of the trail you will be glad you have more water. \nDirections: Coming from the 5 freeway take 14 North get off at Placerita Canyon exit. Follow signs to the nature center but do no turn in there. Go past the nature center on Placerita Canyon a few miles then on the Right will be a trailhead\, be careful as it is possible to drive right past it. SUMMARY:Conejo Mountain for the 2.25 mph group
DESCRIPTION:Just a heads up: Please and thank you for being considerate and cancelling with enough time to give someone on the waitlist a chance to hike! Otherwise\, you may no longer be allowed to hike with me. \nMasks are mandatory as we gather at the trailhead! \nI am posting this because I cannot keep up with Kim! We will start in a slightly different spot than Kim\, but end up at the same place\, at the top of Conejo Mountain. Basically\, this is my Powerline Hike with a detour to the top of the mountain. \nWe will start on the Powerline Trail until it reaches the much wider Edison Conejo Mountain Road\, marked by sets of power line transmission towers. We will be hiking from tower to tower. After turning around at the end of the trail\, we will detour on a little side trail to the top of Conejo Mountain before heading down again. The views are pretty amazing from the top of the mountain. Hopefully\, we will see a nice sunset on the descent. \nThis trail is a bit on the long\, steep side and the mountain can get quite brown and barren. But the rock formations are pretty cool\, and get more interesting the higher you climb. On the way up\, we should be able to catch some of the outstanding views\, from Boney Mountain to the south to the Channel Islands and Oxnard Plain to the west and Thousand Oaks to the east. \nIf you want to bring snacks to share\, please consider Covid and bring individually wrapped items\, so people aren’t dipping into the same bags or containers. \nDistance: ~ 5.5 milesElevation Gain: Around 1300′Difficulty: IntermediateDogs: If leashedRestrooms: NatureWater Fountain: NoParking: Free at the Trailhead along Via RicardoTrail: Single to double track\, fair condition\, for rocks and rutsSunset: 4:46 PMWe will be coming down as the sun sets and the trail can be rough in spots\, so please remember your lights!Also\, it can be slippery going down\, so you might want to bring poles. \nDirections: From the 101\, exit Borchard Rd. Stay on Borchard Road\, up a hill and into Dos Vientos. After around 4 miles\, right turn onto Via Ricardo (this is the first stop light in Dos Vientos). The trailhead will be on your right after about 0.6 mile. Park on either side of the street. \nKnown Dangers: Attack skunks\, rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, bears\, mountain lions\, heatstroke\, rabid rabbits\, whatever. \nBring:Flashlight/headlamp\, charged and ready to go!LOTS of H20\, especially if it’s hot when we start out.A light jacket if you tend to get chilly in the evenings \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/COVID information for Ventura and LA counties:• https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/• http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules: \n• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Evening Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come join me for a quick-paced (2.5-3 miles per hour) evening hike. It will be dark so please have a light! Should take only 2’30” if you hike at that pace. \nWe will be on pavement or gravel most of the way\, which makes it good for nighttime! \nThis area has a lot of No Picnicking signs throughout the park\, which means we need to keep moving and not stop for breaks or congregate. It is a reverse hike in that it goes down in the beginning and you go back up a steep hill at the end.We will hike/walk down to a campground picnic area. In non Covid times I would suggest congregating and having a restful snack there. It is across from the ranger’s house so we want to make sure to follow the rules and also not be very loud. We can stop briefly to rest or snack and then turn around and head back. \nDistance: 7 miles on Pavement and gravel roadElevation Gain: about 600 ftDifficulty: Intermediate hike due to pace and distance\, but an experienced fast paced beginner or someone willing to go the distance should be able to do it too\, please do not expect anyone to wait for you if you are slower and do not know the way.Dogs: NoRestrooms: There is an Andy Gump toilet mid hikeWater Fountain: NoParking: Free\, make sure you do not park on the street across from the trailhead or you will get a ticket. Park farther down at Potrero and Pinehill on the right then walk to the trailhead.Trail: Out and back\, pavement/fireroad this hike goes down at the beginning and up at the endSunset: 5:19 pm bring flashlight or headlampWeather: Adverse Weather conditions will cancel the hike. Come prepared with a light layer in your pack in case you get chilly from all the sweat! (I usually get chilled on the way back). \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, poison oak\, Mosquitoes may all be encountered on this hike\, bug spray might be useful here.It is always possible to slip and fall though the road is flat wear comfortable shoes that you can wear on pavement or dirt. Tennis shoes okay since much of this hike is pavement\, but hiking shoes are best. \nBring: Your headlamp\, a personal snack\, light layer and LOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L or more L if you sweat a lot). Its a good practice to carry more water than you need as weight training for a longer hike! (off track here but a weighted vests are really good for your core and that is what carrying a heavy backpack is like). \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/COVID information for Ventura and LA counties:• https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/• http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules: \n• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike. SUMMARY:Las Llajas Canyon to an Abandoned Mining Operation Hike
DESCRIPTION:I had a few people asking about doing this hike again so lets do it while the weather is still a little cooler (hopefully)! The last time we hiked this we saw evidence of what was mined there! Shells! Each time I go I see or learn something different about the place. \nStarting out Las Llajas has some shade\, the way up to the mine there will not be any shade\, so make sure you are prepared for sun exposure. This hike should probably only take about 2 hours but allow for 3 just in case! We will take a short break to explore the mine area and then head back the way we came. \nDistance: 6 milesElevation Gain: 1000′Difficulty: Easy IntermediateDogs: noRestrooms: noWater Fountain: NoParking: Free on the street but be mindful of the signsTrail: Out and backSunset: 5:23 pmWeather: If it is hotter than 85 I may cancel since there is no shade on the way to the mine. Wind over 15 mph or rain may also cancel the hike. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes can be on this trail so beware! Slip-‘n-fall is always possible so please wear good shoes or use poles if you wish to\, poison oak may also be on the trail so watch what you brush up against. \nBring: At least 2 liters of water\, more if you sweat a lot! A snack if you think you need one for when we take a little break at the mine.Flashlight/headlamp might not be needed unless you are really slow\, it is always a good practice to bring extra things such as a light and extra water\, to provide experience carrying extra weight for a longer hike!Sunscreen/hat or sunglasses if you burn easily since part of the hike is exposed and we will be in full sun at some point. DESCRIPTION:Come join me Tuesday\, February 16 for an easy intermediate evening hike. \nI hike for conditioning so those that join should feel comfortable hiking 2 to 2.5 miles per hour. We may stop briefly to catch our breath at the top of the hill and to regroup if we need to and maybe a brief break at about the halfway point. If you are a beginner or advanced and want to start with us and hike at your own pace just let us know at the beginning of the hike so I can provide directions on where to turn as there will not be a sweep. \nWe will not be visiting the tar pits this time. You are welcome to go to the tar pits on your own if you want to extend the hike and know the way\, just let me know. I prefer to keep it simple and just do the loop at this time. \nIf you sign up and then decide you cannot make it please take yourself off the sign up so that someone else can join in your place\, since we are limiting the group size to 10 at this time. \nDistance: 4.3 MilesElevation Gain: 698 feetDifficulty: Intermediate due to pace and steepness\, loose gravelDogs: NoRestrooms: NoWater Fountain: NoParking: Free street parking\, just note there are some no parking signs and do not park there!Trail: Lolypop/Loop trailSunset: 5:40pm (bring a flashlight or headlamp) it will be darkWeather: Heat over 85 degrees (at 6)\, Santa Ana Winds over 12mph or rain cancels the hike (I won’t hike in those conditions). \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes are in the area on the trail so be mindful where you step\, a slip-‘n-fall is always possible so wear proper shoes\,/use poles if you prefer\, poison oak may also be on the trail so please watch what you brush up against! \nBring:Flashlight/headlamp and a light layer in case you get cold.A personal snack if you have not gotten to eat dinner so you have some energy to hike. \nLOTS of H20 is always recommended. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos 5 mile loop
DESCRIPTION:Join me on a conditioning evening hike. \nModerate five mile loop with a total elevation gain/loss of about 800 ft. This hike explores the neighborhood trails in the Dos Vientos area of the southwestern Conejo Valley. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Evening Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come join me for a quick-paced (2.5-3 miles per hour) evening hike. This will be the longer 9 mile version. \nWe will be on pavement or gravel most of the way\, which makes it good for nighttime! I am extending this hike an additional two miles (taking a side trail another hiking group I am in calls “Joanne’s Route”). \nDistance: 9 miles on Pavement and gravel roadElevation Gain: about 600 ftDifficulty: Intermediate hike due to pace and distance\, but an experienced fast paced beginner or someone willing to go the distance should be able to do it too\, please do not expect anyone to wait for you if you are slower and do not know the way.Dogs: NoRestrooms: There is an Andy Gump toilet mid hikeWater Fountain: NoParking: Free\, make sure you do not park on the street across from the trailhead or you will get a ticket. Park farther down at Potrero and Pinehill on the right then walk to the trailhead.Trail: Out and back\, pavement/fireroad this hike goes down at the beginning and up at the endSunset: 7:04 pm bring flashlight or headlampWeather: Adverse Weather conditions will cancel the hike. \nBring: Your headlamp\, a personal snack\, light layer and LOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L or more L if you sweat a lot).
