SUMMARY:Echo Mountain Via Sam Merrill Trail
DESCRIPTION:Come join me at a popular location for hiking in Altadena\,Cobb Estate\, Echo Mountain trail is a very popular hike and if you come or have been there before you’ll know why! There are ruins from an old hotel and dance hall and the Mount Lowe Railway. We will begin on time at 2pm so I suggest arriving at 1:30pm for parking. \nThere are some spectacular views at the top and remnants of times gone by. If you have never been there before you will want to plan for some explore time up top. I will probably only stay up there for about 15 minutes and then head down\, but like I said it is worth exploring around there (and find out why it is called Echo Mountain) so no need to come down with me. If you do stay up longer you definitely will need a light. \nDistance: 5.4 miles (for details look up this trail on Alltrails.com)Elevation Gain: 1417 ftDifficulty: Intermediate due to steepness and pace no one will wait for you if you are slower than the group pace. If you know the way and are slower you can join us or just come on your own and start earlier.Dogs: NoRestrooms: NoWater Fountain: NoParking: Free street parking may need to walk a bit from your park spot so allow time for this (arrive at 1:30pm is suggested).Trail: Out and back\, can be slick and slippery\, poles suggested for those that need them due to this (there have been hiker deaths on this trail) and wear appropriate hiking or trail shoes.Sunset: 4:45 pm bring light just to be safe\, we will probably be finishedWeather: rain\, wind or extreme heat will cancel this hike\, rain and mud can make the trail especially dangerous so if we get a lot of rain between now and then I may cancel. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, can all happen on this trail\, additionally if it is a warm day\, bring extra water due to no shade and the steep climb. This place attracts a lot of people so if you are trying to social distance don’t say I did not warn you. There will be some narrow spots and people may want to pass you going either way if you are slower you need to let the runners or faster people pass you out of politeness and put on your mask if it looks like they care. \nBring: snack and a light layer as it may be cool at the topFlashlight/headlamp when it’s darkSunscreen and hat or sunglasses recommended since this hike has little shadeLOTS of H20 I recommend about 2 liters more if you sweat a lot. \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/COVID information for Ventura and LA counties:• https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/• http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules: \n• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike. SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Trail Loop through Box Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Come Join Us Saturday\, December 5\, for an afternoon/evening workout hike! \nWe start on time at Wildwood Park where there are a ton of trails. We will be veering right at the Santa Rosa Trail/Box Canyon sign and go up a steep incline\, which is about 1 mile to the top. If you are a beginner you could do the hill and then turn around to make it a heart-pounding 2 mile hike. The rest of us will keep going at a good pace as the trail loops around so you can see Santa Rosa Valley/Camarillo and then back to the trailhead in Wildwood. We should finish by no later than 5pm depending on the pace. \nDistance: 6.3 milesElevation Gain: 1000+Difficulty: Intermediate Hike. If a Beginner tags along they should turn around at the top and not do the loop. Please do not expect us to wait for you.Dogs: NoRestrooms: There may be a pit toilet at the trailheadWater Fountain: noParking: Free parking lotTrail: This is a loop trail unless you just want to do 2 miles up to the ridge and back.Sunset: 4:45 pm bring flashlight or headlamp just in case we take longer that 2.5 hoursWeather: It can always start out hot at this trailhead since there is no shade. Hike will be canceled due to extreme weather (85 or above\, Santa Ana Wind conditions etc) \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes and poison oak can be at this trail. Watch what plants you brush up against and be aware that snakes co exist here. \nBring: Flashlight/headlamp and a personal snack. You may want sunscreen/sunglasses or hat starting out and an extra layer in case you get cold on the way back. We can take a 5-10 minute break at the bottom which is a little more than halfway\, where the houses are and then keep going. \nBring lots of water I recommend 2-3 liters. It is always good to bring more that you need and get practice carrying it. DESCRIPTION:Come and Join me on my Christmas Break for an afternoon Intermediate (2.5 to 3 miles per hour) hike near Placerita Canyon Nature Center.Los Pinetos is one of my favorite trails that was destroyed a few years ago by a fire but has since regrown and is ready for us.Just a note here: I have not hiked it since January 2020 after it was first reopened\, but have hiked it many times before that and the trail was similar as before. \nDistance: 7 milesElevation Gain: 1800′Difficulty: Intermediate due to pace\, length and steepnessDogs: NoRestrooms: Maybe a pit toilet at trailheadWater Fountain: NoParking: Free on street\, a little limited but up the road is a dirt lot about 1/4 of mile in case there is no room by the trailheadTrail: Out and backSunset: 4:50 bring a light just to be safeWeather: Unusual windy\, rainy or heat will cancel the hike \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, are all on this hike. There is an exposed steep hill at the beginning of the hike where you will overheat even on a cool day\, it levels out after that into more shade and less steepness. \nBring: Make sure you wear proper hiking attire especially shoes and bring poles if you need them. An extra layer in case it gets chilly\, sunscreen\, hat sunglasses for the exposed areas\, also a snack for your break at the top\, light just to be safe!I suggest 2-3 liters of water\, some of the exposed steep parts of the trail you will be glad you have more water. \nDirections: Coming from the 5 freeway take 14 North get off at Placerita Canyon exit. Follow signs to the nature center but do no turn in there. Go past the nature center on Placerita Canyon a few miles then on the Right will be a trailhead\, be careful as it is possible to drive right past it. If cars are parked near it then you will notice it. SUMMARY:Conejo Mountain for the 2.25 mph group
DESCRIPTION:Just a heads up: Please and thank you for being considerate and cancelling with enough time to give someone on the waitlist a chance to hike! Otherwise\, you may no longer be allowed to hike with me. \nMasks are mandatory as we gather at the trailhead! \nI am posting this because I cannot keep up with Kim! We will start in a slightly different spot than Kim\, but end up at the same place\, at the top of Conejo Mountain. Basically\, this is my Powerline Hike with a detour to the top of the mountain. \nWe will start on the Powerline Trail until it reaches the much wider Edison Conejo Mountain Road\, marked by sets of power line transmission towers. We will be hiking from tower to tower. After turning around at the end of the trail\, we will detour on a little side trail to the top of Conejo Mountain before heading down again. The views are pretty amazing from the top of the mountain. Hopefully\, we will see a nice sunset on the descent. \nThis trail is a bit on the long\, steep side and the mountain can get quite brown and barren. But the rock formations are pretty cool\, and get more interesting the higher you climb. On the way up\, we should be able to catch some of the outstanding views\, from Boney Mountain to the south to the Channel Islands and Oxnard Plain to the west and Thousand Oaks to the east. \nIf you want to bring snacks to share\, please consider Covid and bring individually wrapped items\, so people aren’t dipping into the same bags or containers. \nDistance: ~ 5.5 milesElevation Gain: Around 1300′Difficulty: IntermediateDogs: If leashedRestrooms: NatureWater Fountain: NoParking: Free at the Trailhead along Via RicardoTrail: Single to double track\, fair condition\, for rocks and rutsSunset: 4:46 PMWe will be coming down as the sun sets and the trail can be rough in spots\, so please remember your lights!Also\, it can be slippery going down\, so you might want to bring poles. \nDirections: From the 101\, exit Borchard Rd. Stay on Borchard Road\, up a hill and into Dos Vientos. After around 4 miles\, right turn onto Via Ricardo (this is the first stop light in Dos Vientos). The trailhead will be on your right after about 0.6 mile. Park on either side of the street. \nKnown Dangers: Attack skunks\, rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, bears\, mountain lions\, heatstroke\, rabid rabbits\, whatever. \nBring:Flashlight/headlamp\, charged and ready to go!LOTS of H20\, especially if it’s hot when we start out.A light jacket if you tend to get chilly in the evenings \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/COVID information for Ventura and LA counties:• https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/• http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules: \n• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike.
