SUMMARY:Hump Day: Los RoblesWhite Horse Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Masks are mandatory as we gather in the (2nd) Triunfo Community Park parking lot! They will also be mandatory anytime we are gathered and cannot keep an appropriate social distance between people. \nThe hike begins with a 1.3 mile single-track section of the Los Robles system to a junction with a wide fire road\, which we’ll take for about another mile to where it joins up with the White Horse Canyon Trail. From there\, we’ll make a loop back to a point just above that first junction where there is a bench at the top of a peak. There is a short section of a steep ascent on this loop\, but mostly\, its nicely rolling hills. \nFrom the bench we’ll head back down to the first single-track portion of our hike to the park with our vehicles. \nWe will start no later than 6:40 pm\, so don’t be late and use the restrooms BEFORE you get to the trailhead\, as they are on the opposite end of the park\, i.e\, the first parking lot. \nDistance: 5.8 milesElevation Gain: 1000′ +Difficulty: IntermediateDogs: Yes\, but only if leashed\, per State lawRestrooms: Yes\, on the east end of the parkWater Fountain: Yes\, at the parkParking: Free parking lotTrail: Single track and fire roadSunset: irrelevantMoonrise: 8.21 PM\, so even though it will be almost full\, we won’t have it for most of the hikeBring: Mask\, headlamp or flashlight and whatever clothes you need for a cool November evening. \nDirections: From the 101\, take the exit at Hampshire Road and head south. When you get to Triunfo Canyon Road\, head AWAY from the 101 (basically SW) and after a short drive you will arrive at Triunfo Community Park on your right. Turn right onto Tamarack Street\, which borders the park. Pass the first entrance to the park (on your left) and turn into the 2nd parking lot (also on your left)\, which is just before the entrance to a gated community. \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules:• This hike is limited to 10 participants\, guests are not permitted.• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike. SUMMARY:Hike from Corbin and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Come join me Veterans Day November 11\, for an afternoon hike. I have the day off and thought I would start the hike at 3pm\, I hope you can join me!I was recently introduced to a new starting place for the Limekin trail. It is on Corbin Ave\, just before the YMCA\, if you get to the YMCA you have gone too far. \nWe will go up the trail\, then cross Tampa and continue on another trail\, I do not recall name but it makes it a round trip 7 mile hike. I recently hiked this trail with another meet up group and caught a beautiful sunset\, not to mention we had a good workout too! \nDistance: 7 milesElevation Gain: 1000′Difficulty: Intermediate due to pace and distance\, not for beginners.Dogs: If your well trained dog can go at fast pace you can bring it.Restrooms: NoWater Fountain: NoParking: Free parking on Corbin Ave on either side of trailTrail: Out and back. Paved road and dirt\, uneven surfacesSunset: 4:52pmWeather: It might be warm\, am hoping for fall weather. Temps above 85 at start time and high winds will cancel hike. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak all can be encountered on this hike \nBring: a headlamp or have a charged phone and use that. We may only need the light at the end. You may also want to bring a personal snack for when we take a short break halfway through at the turnaround point.Sunscreen or hat if you sunburn easily since we are starting at 3pm.LOTS of H20 I recommend 2-3 liters\, since it may be hot and we are going fast. \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/COVID information for Ventura and LA counties:• https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/• http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules: \n• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike. SUMMARY:Hump Day Hike: Angel Vista via the Rosewood Trail
DESCRIPTION:Hi All\, \nJust a heads up: Barring extenuating circumstances\, if you sign up and don’t show up\, or change your rsvp to “not going” less than 4 hours before the start of the hike more than once\, you will not be welcome to hike with me again. It’s not fair to those on the waiting list. Please and thank you for being considerate! \nThis is a great weeknight hike\, not too hard nor too easy – I would say it’s “Just Right”! Although considered intermediate and not a true beginner’s hike\, the gain is spread out evenly on switchbacks over the whole climb which makes it fall on the easier end of the intermediate scale (while still being a good workout). There is a great view and picnic table at the top which makes it perfect place to do a little social distancing during these crazy times! \nThere is a fairly large area at the top\, so I’m hoping we can do some socializing with each other before heading down. \nIf you want to bring snacks to share\, please consider Covid and bring individually wrapped items\, so people aren’t dipping into the same bags or containers. \nWe will definitely be in the dark\, so remember your head lamps! It can be slippery on the downhill\, so you might want to consider poles. \nDistance: 3 milesElevation Gain: 750′Difficulty: Easy side of IntermediateDogs: If leashedRestrooms: NatureWater Fountain: NoParking: Free street parkingTrail: Single track\, excellent conditionSunset: irrelevantMoon: Not much \nDirections: From the 101 take the Ventu Park exit and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn…um…left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so let’s try to be somewhat restrained. We will meet at the trailhead on the left/east side of the road. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, bears\, mountain lions\, heatstroke\, rabid rabbits\, whatever. \nBring:Flashlight/headlamp\, charged and ready to go!H20Whatever you need to stay warm at the top. It is likely to be windy and chilly \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/COVID information for Ventura and LA counties:• https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/• http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules: \n• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike. SUMMARY:Oak Creek Canyon to Angel Vista
DESCRIPTION:Lets hike a longer way to Angel Vista! We will start from the Oak Creek Canyon Trail off of Moorpark Road. This is a faster paced hike (only break is at the halfway point at the Vista). To get there\, take the Moorpark Road exit and then go west until you reach the dirt lot that says Los Robles Trail (that is not where we are meeting) and then go right onto Greenmeadow all the way to the end. The free paved parking is at Greenmeadow Park. We will meet at the the Oak Creek Canyon Trailhead.Someone from another group I hike with calls this trail Space Mountain trail because there are a lot of blind curves and bikers on this trail. It is important that the group sticks together on this trail as there are a few junctions that can be confusing and cause you to take a wrong turn and end up somewhere else. For that reason I suggest if you are a beginner or slower hiker to sit this one out\, unless you are familiar with the trail. \nDistance: 7 milesElevation Gain: 1200 ft +Difficulty: Intermediate must be able to stay with groupDogs: NoRestrooms: NoWater Fountain: NoParking: Free at Greenmeadow ParkTrail: Out and backSunset: 4:51pm bring a headlamp or flashlight\, just to be safeWeather: Windy or rainy weather\, extreme heat will cancel hike \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, are on this trail\, kamikaze mountain bikers\, due to the blind curves \nBring: A snack if you need it\, light in case it gets too dark for you\, wear hiking shoes with good traction as some areas are slick\, poles if you preferSunscreen if you burn easily or wear a hat/sunglassesLOTS of H20 I recommend 2-3 liters \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/COVID information for Ventura and LA counties:• https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/• http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules: \n• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike. SUMMARY:Hump Day- Dos Vientos Powerline
DESCRIPTION:Just a heads up: Barring extenuating circumstances\, if you sign up and don’t show up\, or change your rsvp to “not going” less than 4 hours before the start of the hike more than once\, you will not be welcome to hike with me again. It’s not fair to those on the waiting list. Please and thank you for being considerate! \nMasks are mandatory as we gather at the trailhead! \nI used to do this trail a few times a week for conditioning (maybe the “I used to” explains why I am not so conditioned anymore.) It’s not the most interesting\, but it is a good workout! We will be starting on the Powerline Trail until it reaches the much wider Edison Conejo Mountain Road\, marked by sets of power line transmission towers. We will be hiking from tower to tower and then turning around when we reach the last tower. We can rendevous some on the trail\, just below the last tower\, while adhering to social distancing guidelines. \nThis trail is a bit on the long\, steep side and the mountain can get quite brown and barren. But the rock formations are pretty cool\, and get more interesting the higher you climb. SUMMARY:Reseda to Eagle Rock Via Garapito Trail
DESCRIPTION:Come join me for another fall afternoon hike at a beloved park at the very top of Reseda Blvd. There are many different trails up here. \nMy favorite trail is the Garapito trail as you can go into some shaded bushy part of the canyon verses the exposed fire-road. \nWe will take this to Eagle Rock where a beloved bench memorializing some friends of mine rests. That will be the break spot where you can have a personal snack and rest for 10-15 minutes. I like to keep moving so because of that I would say if you are a beginner and need to go on your own\, at your own pace\, only come if you are confident as to where you are going up there and do not need guidance from me. It is still a great place to hike I would recommend for anyone at any level. \nDistance: About 8 milesElevation Gain: 1750 ftDifficulty: Intermediate because of pace and distanceDogs: No as I am not sure about the policy at the park thereRestrooms: pit toilet at trailheadWater Fountain: noParking: Plenty of free but depends where you park\, note the signsTrail: Combination of loop and out and back\, fire road and hiking trailSunset: 4:46pm bring a headlamp or charged phone with light to be safeWeather: Take note of the weather as it may be hot or cold. If it is a warm day there are places with very little shade but if cool you may want layers. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak can all happen on this trail and also there are a lot of offshoots that can guide you the wrong way if you are not paying attention. I suggest that you wear proper hiking shoes and not tennis shoes to avoid slipping on rock or trail. \nBring: a light for just in case\, a personal snack for Eagle Rock breakSunscreen\, hat or sunglasses for sun protection and also a layer in case it gets cold\, depending on the weather.I suggest LOTS of H20 to be safe\, good practice is to bring between 2-3 liters even if you think it is too much\, you can share with another who needs it and get practice carrying for longer hikes. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Evening Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come join me for a quick-paced (2.5-3 miles per hour) evening hike. Let’s get in a good hike before our Thanksgiving feasts take place! \nWe will be on pavement or gravel most of the way\, which makes it good for nighttime! I am extending this hike an additional two miles from the last time I did this with the group (taking a side trail another hiking group I am in calls “Joanne’s Route”).I have the day off so I am starting the hike earlier so we can get a little more daylight in than the last time we hiked this trail. This area has a lot of No Picnicking signs throughout the park\, which means we need to keep moving and not stop for breaks or congregate. It is a reverse hike in that it goes down in the beginning and you go back up a steep hill at the end.We will hike/walk down to a campground picnic area. In non Covid times I would suggest congregating and having a restful snack there. It is across from the ranger’s house so we want to make sure to follow the rules and also not be very loud. We can stop briefly to rest or snack and then turn around and head back. \nDistance: 9 miles on Pavement and gravel roadElevation Gain: about 600 ftDifficulty: Intermediate hike due to pace and distance\, but an experienced fast paced beginner or someone willing to go the distance should be able to do it too\, please do not expect anyone to wait for you if you are slower and do not know the way.Dogs: NoRestrooms: There is an Andy Gump toilet mid hikeWater Fountain: NoParking: Free\, make sure you do not park on the street across from the trailhead or you will get a ticket. Park farther down at Potrero and Pinehill on the right then walk to the trailhead.Trail: Out and back\, pavement/fireroad this hike goes down at the beginning and up at the endSunset: 4:47 pm bring flashlight or headlampWeather: Adverse Weather conditions will cancel the hike. Come prepared with a light layer in your pack in case you get chilly from all the sweat! (I usually get chilled on the way back). \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, poison oak\, Mosquitoes may all be encountered on this hike\, bug spray might be useful here.It is always possible to slip and fall though the road is flat wear comfortable shoes that you can wear on pavement or dirt. Tennis shoes okay since much of this hike is pavement\, but hiking shoes are best. \nBring: Your headlamp\, a personal snack\, light layer and LOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L or more L if you sweat a lot). SUMMARY:Hump Day- Topanga Overlook
DESCRIPTION:Hi All\, \nBarring extenuating circumstances\, if you sign up and don’t show up\, or change your rsvp to “not going” less than 4 hours before the start of the hike more than once\, you will not be welcome to hike with me again. Masks are mandatory as we gather at the trailhead and the Lookout! \nThis is one of our easiest and most beginner friendly hikes with a great place to hang out at the end. It will be close to a full moon and I thought an easy hike the night before Thanksgiving might be a good idea! \nThis out & back hike is only 2 miles total\, and will take us to a lookout destination which has an amazing view of both the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles. \nFrom where we park\, there’s also a great view of the South Bay. We were once treated to a fireworks display being done off of a boat in the bay. \nIf you want to bring snacks to share\, please consider Covid and bring individually wrapped items\, so people aren’t dipping into the same bags or containers. Unless you are snacking\, I will ask that we all wear masks when we are on the lookout together. \nDistance: 2 miles\, with 10 miles of viewsElevation Gain: Very littleDifficulty: EasyDogs: If leashedRestrooms: NatureWater Fountain: NoParking: You can park at the very top of Stunt Road (see link above\, but YOUR GPS MAY\, OR MAY NOT\, GET YOU THERE). The written directions are always accurate.) Parking is free along Stunt Road\, and you will be good as long as you pull completely off of Stunt. If parking is already taken at the very top\, then just BELOW the top of Stunt\, there is LOTS of parking on the north side of Stunt\, and from there it’s a short walk to the top of Stunt.Trail: FireroadSunset: IrrelevantMoon: About three quarters \nDirections: From the 101\, take Las Virgenes (same as Malibu Canyon Road\, depending on where you get on it) to the stoplight at Mulholland Road. Go eastward from that stoplight a few miles until you get to Stunt Road. WATCH FOR IT on your right! Take Stunt Road up to the TOP\, where it meets Shueren Road and where there is a small\, very popular Lookout. \nAlternate Directions: (More direct from Simi) From the 101\, take the Valley Circle/Mulholland Drive exit and head South. In 1/2 mile\, turn right on Valmar which turns into Old Topanga Rd. Turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. In 3.8 miles\, turn left onto Stunt Road. Take Stunt Road up to the TOP\, where it meets Shueren Road and where there is a small\, very popular Lookout. \nBring:Flashlight/headlamp\, charged and ready to go!Dress for the weather! SUMMARY:Fish Canyon to Piano Box Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Lets burn off some of that Thanksgiving feast by doing this 8 mile hike!I have not been there since May so it will be partially exploratory since I did not check it out before. I have seen other groups going so I know it is safe and ready for us. In years past this has also been a great place for fall colors. Not sure now because it has been really dry. \nWe will need to leave the trail right at 1pm to allow enough time so arrive at 12:30 to get settled. My suggestion is we also should turn back no matter where we are by 2:30-3pm to make sure we do not get stuck in the dark. I do not want us strung out so that is why I am limiting this hike to more experienced hikers. A beginner could come on their own or should start earlier in the day to allow for more time.Distance: 8 milesElevation Gain: 500Difficulty: Intermediate\, no beginners as we need to stay togetherDogs: A well behaved\, trained dog can join us as long as you do not expect us to wait for youRestrooms: NoWater Fountain: NoParking: Parking is free along the roadTrail: Out and back\, uneven footingSunset: 4:46pm we should be back before then but please be prepared with a light just in case!Weather: Rainy\, windy or unusual weather will cancel the hike. Also if it rains a lot before the hike (hasn’t yet)\, I may cancel as it is a canyon that can fill up with water. Please pay attention to the weather the day of in case there are adverse conditions. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak all can happen on this hike. If it does rain while we are hiking we would need to be careful as well (probably not likely).Bring: a personal snack and plenty of water 2-3 liters minimumFlashlight/headlamp to be safeSunscreen and hat is recommended because we will start in full sun. SUMMARY:Post Thanksgiving Hike- Danielson Monument
DESCRIPTION:Hi All\, \nJust a heads up: Barring extenuating circumstances\, if you sign up and don’t show up\, or change your rsvp to “not going” less than 4 hours before the start of the hike more than once\, you will not be welcome to hike with me again. Please and thank you for being considerate! \nMasks are mandatory as we gather at the trailhead and the monument! \nWe will again meet at the Wendy “walk-in” at the intersection of Wendy and Protero Roads in Newbury Park. We will head up the Overlook trail\, staying to the left at every option\, past the old windmill. It’s a steady climb\, but not too steep (the first one can be a little challenging\, but it is doable if you go slowly). We will turn right at the sign for the Waterfall Trail and then make a sharp left that will take us down into the Canyon\, across a small stream. We will climb again\, to the Danielson Monument. On the off chance that we get rain before then\, we might want to detour and check out the waterfall. We will return via a slightly different route and avoid the very steep\, slippery hill that we climbed. \nIf you want to bring snacks to share\, please consider Covid and bring individually wrapped items\, so people aren’t dipping into the same bags or containers. \nDistance: 6 milesElevation Gain: ~ 1500′Difficulty: IntermediateDogs: Not allowed in the state parkRestrooms: NatureWater Fountain: NoParking: Free at the Trailhead along Potrero RoadTrail: Single track\, excellent condition\, although some areas may be overgrownSunset: 4.43 PMMoon: Full moon\, but I’m not sure we will be out late enough to see it \nDirections: Take the 101 to Wendy Drive exit in Newbury Park and head south toward the ocean until Wendy Drive ceases to exist at the intersection with Potrero Road.
