SUMMARY:🎄 Xmas Day Hike - Bell Canyon Loop (Gentiles welcome)
DESCRIPTION:My Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! \n👉 Hike is about 4 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as DIFFICULT due to terrain. See my hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \n😷 PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT. \nDIRECTIONS:\nHead toward the address given above but instead of turning on Woodglade Ln\, just park on Highlander Rd. We meet near the corner of Highlander Rd and Woodlade Ln. by the ball field \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER (see https://www.hikingwithdean.com/liability-waiver) and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.

SUMMARY:Malibou Lake - Lost Cabin Site Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Scroll down to RSVP” color=”danger” i_icon_fontawesome=”fas fa-arrow-down” add_icon=”true” link=”url:%23rsvp”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”danger”]PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nGet ready for a hike in Malibu Creek State Park the other groups never do. Our old destination\, the stone house\, is gone but this moderately strenuous 7-miler is still a great diversion from the usual MCSP treks. We’ll start at the western end of Crags Rd near Malibou Lake and head on up to Lakeside Lateral and the Bulldog Mtwy via Maqueketa Terrace. We’ll loop the lateral and from there we descend down along the Bulldog Lateral. Bulldog is a fire road/powerline access road that descends crookedly along slopes thickly clothed in chaparral and will provide rewarding views of Goat Buttes. \nNear the bottom we’ll come across a dry creek bed then take Crags Rd to the MASH site. After paying homage to Hawkeye\, we’ll visit the Lost Cabin site. The trail to the site probably has the most beautiful surroundings in the park with the red sandstone Goat Buttes to the north and green\, rugged mountains to the south. It is very secluded with few travelers. \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections:\nWe’ll meet on the corner of Crags Dr and Lookout Dr. Park on neighboring streets such as Lookout Dr\, Seminole Dr or Olivera Dr. See map below. [Note: I haven’t been here since before the Woolsey fire and there might be some changes to parking since some of the homes were burnt] \n[vc_message icon_fontawesome=”fas fa-car-side”]NOTE: The Google Map link isn’t working correctly. But if you key in the address manually Google Map will take you to the correct location. In any case here are the written directions from the 101 and Kanan. If you know how to get to the Malibu Reagan Ranch or Paramount Ranch you are almost there. \nFrom the 101 head south on Kanan Rd for about 1/3 mile and turn left on Cornell Way. Continue on Cornell Way for about 2.3 miles. After crossing Mulholland the name changes to Lake Vista Way; continue for 1.1 miles to Crags Dr. Turn left for 0.6 miles and find a place to park according the description above[/vc_message]\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Soon we will be hiking among the fanciful sandstone formations\, caves and arches of the Rabbit Ridge Trail. After a couple of miles we’ll ascend to Simi Peak where on a clear day you can see the Simi Valley\, Conejo Valley\, San Fernando Valley\, Oxnard Plains\, Pacific Ocean\, and a few of the Channel Islands\, and take our snack break. Then its onward to a loop around China Flats\, an open area with clusters of oak trees and a vernal pond. China Flats was the filming area for Back to the Future’s 1885 Hill Valley.  A combination of utility roads\, maintained\, unmaintained and disappearing trails will create a dual loop hike. \nBring your best lugsoles for this one. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nOur hike here constitutes a comprehensive tour that includes wandering through grasslands\, the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point and down into steep and shady Bee Canyon . \nHistorical Note\nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 4.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nFull disclosure: this will be an off-trail “Adventure Hike” so expect the unexpected. Wear long pants and long sleeves.  I haven’t visited the area since 2016….’nuff said \nWe will begin by hiking northwest on the Upper Zuma Canyon segment of the Backbone Trail. Our first stop will be Newton Canyon Falls\, a beautiful waterfall in a lush\, forested grotto with moss-covered rocks. \n \nNewton Falls is just the appetizer. Our main course will be Upper Zuma Falls. While on the main trail it can be seen from the distance. However\, back in 2010\, we did an exploratory hike and found a path to the base of the falls. Although we will be hiking off-trail to get to the falls\, the way is relatively clear of obstacles and mostly level \nHere is a shot of Upper Zuma Falls from the Backbone Trail \n \nIts form becomes more obvious with a zoom lens \n \nAt the base of the falls. You don’t want to miss this one! \n \n  \nAfter visiting the falls\, we’ll return to the trail and continue to Zuma-Trancas Ridge\, turn north\,  and search for my secret trail I found in 2011 to to the top of the falls \nBring the usual stuff\, but most importantly\, bring a sense of adventure! \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,350 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDon’t forget to join our FB group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nOur 6th Annual Super Bowl Pre-Game Hike is perfect: Short enough to get you home on time and prepare for parties and kickoff\, yet big on beauty and adventure. \nThe destination is a familiar one but on this trek we stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. Calabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. \n \nHere we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. We’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail. \n \nClick here for photos from last year\n(Optional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures) \nWe’ll have our snack break at a hidden cistern. Don’t drink the water hee hee \n \nBring at least 2 qts water\, snacks\, sunscreen. \nDirections:\nThe trail head is located on Mulholland Hwy less than a fifth of a mile west of Dry Canyon Cold Creek Road.  Park off-pavement and perpendicular to the road \nFrom the 101 freeway in Agoura/Calabasas\, head South on Las Virgenes Road to Mulholland Hwy. Turn Left on Mulholland and continue 5.7 miles to a small parking area on the right. or…. \nFrom 101 Ventura Fwy in the Valley: take Valley Circle/Mulholland Dr exit south\, turn right on Valmar Rd (becomes Old Topanga Cyn Rd) then right on Mulholland Hwy 2.1 miles to the parking area on the left. \nFrom PCH take Topanga Canyon and turn left up Old Topanga. Take a left at Mulholland Hwy for a couple miles and then turn left onto turnout. If you are coming up Malibu Canyon take a right at Mulholland for 5.7 miles \nThere is overflow parking 500′ south (“west”) across the street next to the house.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Hail to the Trail: Presidents' Day Hike at Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Scroll down to rsvp[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”danger”]PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nAnother HWD Classic! \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \n \nThe site was owned by President Reagan between 1957 and 1967\, before he was elected Governor of California. Prior to the Woolsey fire\, the Reagan Ranch property still had the original barn and stables\, which were used as the park maintenance facility. \nTrails loop through rolling meadowlands and grand old oaks and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \nBetween the MASH set and the ranch we’ll enjoy a short snack break at Century Lake. Part of the famous jump into the river by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Paul Newman & Robert Redford) was done by stuntmen at Century Lake (with plenty of Hollywood magic helping out) because the river in Colorado seen in the film wasn’t deep enough to support such a high jump. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \nOn our return to the ranch we’ll take a side trip to a scenic vista point at the top of Lake View Trail will It will provide us a beautiful view of Malibou Lake and the surrounding mountains. SUMMARY:Hikes into History: Happy Hallow - Grotto Loop

WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nThis will be my modification of the classic Grotto hike at the Circle X Ranch in Malibu.  A short history of the ranch provides the context for our hike \nWhen the Boy Scouts used to trek to The Grotto\, it was part of their Circle X Scout Ranch\, given to them in 1949 by the Los Angeles Exchange Club. The emblem for the Exchange Club was a circled X–hence the name of the ranch. Back in the 1980s\, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy purchased the ranch from the Boy Scouts of America and opened it to the public. Today\, the National Park Service administers the ranch-turned-park\, now called simply Circle X Ranch. \nTo the west of the Grotto lied Happy Hallow\, the scout camp. This 1994 satellite photo illustrates our route. The red track is the classic hike on the Grotto Trail. We’ll be taking a diversion before getting to The Grotto for a loop around Happy Hallow. We did this in 2014 and we will explore some sections we weren’t able to then. \n \n  \nI’ll be adding more text and photos over time so check back often \n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. I recommend the Kanan route above \nExit and turn south at CA-23 (Westlake Blvd) Follow CA-23 south 5.2 mi. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon - Serrano Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Scroll down to rsvp[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”danger”]PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nThis is a loop hike. From the Sycamore Campground parking lot we’ll hike up Big Sycamore Canyon for about a mile and then head east on the Serrano Canyon trail into a densely wooded narrow canyon\, with a lovely seasonal stream crisscrossing the trail numerous times\, and abundant wildlife. As we begin to gain elevation and the trail starts turning north a stunning vista of rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Ridge begins to emerge. This is Serrano Valley \nWe’ll explore the Serrano Family Home Site. This was a large ranch back in the day. The area is strewn with old farm equipment\, water pumps\, home items\, and other artifacts. Trails may be a little overgrown in this area \nWe were there in 8/2013 just after the Springs fire. We saw a veritable bonanza of artifacts including home appliances\, tools\, etc. Check out the pictures here. Before the fire\, and probably now\, the only artifacts visible we’ll see are those that rise above the tall grass\, or ones we trip over. Check out the pics from that day: \nWe’ll crisscross many of the old ranch roads and trails there. We’ll return to Sycamore Canyon via the Old Boney Trail. Its a little boring hiking back to PCH down Sycamore so perhaps we’ll take some side trails along the way — depending how tired we are \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS APPX 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections:\nTake PCH to Sycamore Canyon Rd. Turn in and go to Kiosk. Pay\, park or hang out. We’ll be meeting in day use lot. \nSycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nThere is a parking fee\, credit cards ok. There is additional pay parking at Thornhill Broom Beach – from there walk under PCH to meetup spot.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nAs some of you know I have purchased an RV and will be integrating it into some of our hikes. As a practice run\, I’ve rented a RV space at Tapo Canyon Campground and will be leading a VIP hike in that area. When we return we’ll have a potluck get-together by my RV at the campground (its a short drive/long walk from trail head). Highlights along the way include tar pits and artifacts from an old ranch \nThis will be an exploratory hike I’ve wanted to do for years: a shortcut to the Coquina Mine\, aka the Steam Shovel in Chivo and Las Llajas Canyons. \nHere is the big picture of what we will try to accomplish.\nFor those of you who have done my infamous Las Llajas – Chivo loop this is a familiar area.  The yellow tracks are familiar trails we already use. The magenta line is where we will be doing some trail blazing. Aerial photos suggest there is a relatively clear path most of the way. (best viewed on a computer monitor) \n \nZooming in\, it appears there has been some traffic along my proposed route\, along with an alternate route. \n \nIf all goes according plan we will have blazed a trail that will take you to the Steam Shovel from Chivo Canyon (the usual way is via Las Llajas). Hopefully my fear of heights won’t get in the way \nWhen we are done we’ll meet back at my rv for a post-hike picnic/party \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8 MILES WITH ABOUT 2000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. As you round the bend you will pass the trailhead and the name of the street changes to Cottonwood Dr. Make a right on Westwood St and park at corner. Its a short walk back to the trailhead. Meet there at 9am \n \nTo get to Tapo Cyn Campground and the picnic\, continue on Cottonwood to Tapo Cyn Rd and turn Right for 2 miles. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon to Elliott Mountain and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook Group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDetails\n\nThe official trail up Elliot Mountain (technically a peak at 1\,063 ft) was built May 2015. Below is a photo showing how we used to climb it. The mountain\, a bench and the trail are named after Burt Elliot who was very active with Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Burt died of cancer in the Spring of 2014. He was the go-to guy for all things Conejo Open Space. \n \nWe began exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “The Weekday Hikers.”. At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. From 2008 to 2011 Hill Canyon was the location of our unofficial club house. \nLoading ...\nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting our use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nHere is a video of our hike from 2015\n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. If you’re late…don’t bother showing up \nHead to the address given. There is paid ($5) parking there. Keep going and little past that is free parking on the left.  We’ll meet in the free lot. SUMMARY:Bell Canyon Loop
See my hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDIRECTIONS:Head toward the address given above but instead of turning on Woodglade Ln\, just park on Highlander Rd. We meet near the corner of Highlander Rd and Woodlade Ln. by the ball field \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Temescal Lookout
DESCRIPTION:Our route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. Our destination awaits us! \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, head north on Palisades Drive. After 2.4 miles. Turn left onto Vereda de la Montura\, (the same turnoff for the trailhead for hikes in Santa Ynez Canyon and Santa Ynez Falls) and make an immediate right on Michael Lane. Drive half a mile to the trailhead\, which will be on the left (look for what looks like a private driveway). There is street parking available on Michael Lane.

SUMMARY:Satwiwa - Upper Sycamore Canyon - Old Boney - Fossil Trail Loop
DESCRIPTION:This site was home to the Chumash\, Spanish Rancho El Conejo\, and modern ranching and farming operations. For many years\, the Santa Monica Mountains sustained the Chumash and Tongva/Gabrielino cultures. Sycamore Canyon\, which cuts through Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa and Point Mugu State Park\, was part of a Chumash trade route. Satwiwa\, which means “the bluffs\,” was the name of a nearby Chumash village. \n \nWe’ll hike through serene hills\, with views of Boney Mountain. Along the way there is a seasonal water fall and some hand-sized fossils. We’ll take a snack break at the Danielson Monument. \nThe hike is about 8.5 miles with 2\,000 feet total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See my hike rating guide: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDirections to Trailhead \nPark on Potrero Rd. at the end of Wendy Dr. in Newbury Park

SUMMARY:National Trails Day - Hike at the Malibu Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]National Trails Day is a celebration of trails that evolved from the report of President Ronald Reagan’s President’s Commission on Americans Outdoors. In 1987\, the report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes\, be on trails that wind through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing steps. The recommendation\, dubbed Trails for All Americans\, became the impetus behind several public and private parties joining American Hiking Society in launching National Trails Day® in 1993. National Trails Day is always the first Saturday in June. \nIn light of the history of NTD\, this year we’ll celebrate at the old Reagan Ranch \n \nDetails\nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow-land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Creek — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers. (See note below) \n[content-egg module=Amazon template=item_simple] \n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nUPDATE: We have such a large group\, I won’t force everyone to cross the creek on the tree trunk/branches to get to MASH site. I will consider options at that time\, possibly continuing the hike without the side trip to MASH site. \nPost-Hike Lunch\nIslands Restaurant Agoura Hills\n29271 Agoura Road\nAgoura Hills\, CA 91301\nPhone: 818-879-8550\nOn the northwest corner of Kanan and Agoura Rd \nDirections:\nPark in the dirt lot. SUMMARY:The Original E.T. Hike – 🐶s OK
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDetails\nAn HDW original\, we’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008!  Dogs are ok on this one. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. So let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak-and sycamore-shaded canyons and eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights \nWe’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie\, and will take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET. \nThe video below shows the location of our hike. The maker did an excellent job in juxtaposing scenes from ET with present day shots. Pay particularly close attention to the opening shots\, the dirt path a bicycle is riding on\, and the van driving into a park. We will be hiking over and through these locations.\n\n\n \n\n\n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8.3 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. SUMMARY:Wirebreak - Santa Ynez Canyon Loop - Lunch at Spruzzo's
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nI’m timing this hike with the opening of Spruzzo Restaurant in Pacific Palisades. Date may change accordingly. \nWe begin the hike by traveling south along Santa Ynez Creek\, climb a steep ridge to E. Topanga Fireroad\, skirt Trippet ranch and return via a descent down into Santa Ynez Canyon. Santa Ynez Canyon features chilly mountain pools\, several beautiful waterfalls\, and slim sandstone cliffs set in a cool oasis of lush oak and sycamore forests. \nLoop is 7.3 miles with total ascent of about 1700′. The No Fire-roads Rule will be in effect! \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Ratings Guide at https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDirections \nFrom PCH: Take Sunset Bl north 0.5 mile to Palisades Dr. Follow Palisades Dr north for 2.4 miles to Ver de la Montura. Turn left for one long block. Park near end of street and meet across the street from signed trailhead. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER.
