SUMMARY:Hiking with Mark E: Memorial Day Hike to MASH Site and Century Lake
DESCRIPTION:This relatively easy\, out-and-back hike\, travels alongside Malibu Creek through some great terrain and old growth oak trees\, with a special bonus — a visit to the site of television’s legendary program hit M*A*S*H*. The site still draws visitors from all over the world decades after the show left the air. Now on display are a recreation of the iconic signpost\, and informational panels with photographs from the show. We’ll enjoy a nice snack break here. \nOn the way\, we’ll drop into Century Lake — a secluded area\, where we can enjoy its serenity at a lakeside picnic table. The famous cliff dive seen in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was shot here \nABOUT THE PARK \nMalibu Creek State Park is the is the former location ranch of 20th Century Fox studios who owned the land between 1946 and 1974. Considered the recreational crown jewel of the Santa Monica Mountains\, MCSP has over 8\,000 acres of rolling tallgrass plains\, oak savannahs and dramatic peaks. SUMMARY:Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is slightly strenuous with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \nDIRECTIONS\nMeet at the Zuma Canyon Trailhead parking lot at\n5721 Bonsall Dr · Malibu\, CA \nTrail statistics are approximate. SUMMARY:Mission Point The Hard Way
DESCRIPTION:See the hike report from last year’s trip: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/mission-point-the-hard-way \nO’Melveny Park spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nNormally our hike to the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point uses the steep Grotto Trail or my alternate no-name one u. Our return would use the Bee Canyon trail \nHowever\, this time we will explore some of those little used and overgrown trails we have seen crisscrossing our other paths. Instead of returning via Bee Canyon\, we’ll use the Pipleline Trail (an alternate to Neon Way) \nTrekking poles recommended for this one: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \nHike is about 5 miles with 1800 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide \nHistorical Note \nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \nDirections \nHead for O’Melveny Park using the map pin and Google Maps. SUMMARY:In Search of Waterfalls at Malibu Creek State Park

Two of them are illustrated in the 1983 and 1996 edition of Milt McAuley’s Hiking Trails of Malibu Creek State Park \n[asa2 tpl=”Book” align=”center” ajax=”1″]094256829X[/asa2] \nbut there are no directions or trails described. I found the person who took the photograph (several years ago) shown here and he described the location of one of them. Next to it is McCauley’s illustration. \n \nThe location of the 2nd waterfall remains a mystery. All I know it that its somewhere on or near the Mendenhall homestead (from the 1860s). I do know the location of the homestead so at least our search radius will be limited. Here is McCauley’s illustration: \n \nIn a perfect world this would be an easy hike with less than 4 miles and  about 600 feet of total ascent. Add to that some meandering\, creeking and bushwhacking making things more difficult.  I did find some overgrown trails  using satellite imagery that we will follow. Here is a 1976 view of the Mendenhall homestead area along with a modern view. SUMMARY:Olympia Farms to Hidden Pond at Rancho Potrero Open Space
DESCRIPTION:I’ve never seen water at Hidden Pond\, so let’s go check it out. Along the way we will loop around Rancho Potrero Open Space. I believe there is another little pond nearby – we’ll check that out also. \nOn the west end of the space is a property that used to be called Olympia Farms\, which was owned by Greek immigrant\, textile businessman and Arabian horse breeder George Patarias Huck. (Huck was tragically shot and killed in front of his home in Mt. Olympus in August 1984 at age 46.) \nHuck’s 638 acre property was sold to the Mountains Recreation and Conservancy\, City of Thousand Oaks\, Conejo Recreation and Park District and National Park Service for $4.2 million in 1993. 312 acres were carved out as an addition to Rancho Sierra Vista. The remainder is part of Rancho Potrero\, which is maintained by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA). \nIn the 2021-2022 time frame\, the Olympia Farms space was redeveloped and improved to include\, pedestrian paths\, a horse corral\, drinking fountain for people and animals\, picnic benches and a small amphitheater area. \n👉🏻Hike is about 8 miles with 1600′ total ascent and rated MEDIUM. But anything less than a couple miles is not worth getting up for so we’ll extend the loop into the cool side of Mulholland and ramble about a network of secret and little-used trails. SUMMARY:Liberty Canyon - Century Lake Loop
DESCRIPTION:We begin our journey hiking south into Liberty Canyon — one of three natural preserves in Malibu Creek State Park. The canyon has a rare stand of California Valley Oak. Soon we will cross Liberty Creek turn west onto and up the Phantom Trail. After a couple miles the trail puts us down onto Mulholland Hwy. We proceed across Mulholland onto the Cistern Trail in Malibu Creek Stat Park. The Cistern Trail ascends a bit as it leaves Mulholland Highway\, but soon after begins heading downhill\, with views of Reagan Ranch off to the right\, and the Goat Buttes and Castro Crest of Malibu Creek State Park ahead. \nAfter a short distance we will merge with the Lookout Trail and take that down to Century Lake for a snack/lunch break next to the water. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. Short enough to get you home on time and prepare for parties and kickoff\, yet big on beauty and adventure. You will even have time to get to Vegas. ✈️ \nOur destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \n🗻Calabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. We’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail. \n(Optional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. They are not linked by trails but its a short drive to each of the trail heads. From each trail head its a short hike to each waterfall \nAfter waterfall #1\, we’ll caravan to #2\, then caravan to #3. Total driving between trailheads is only 5.7 miles. Ridesharing is encouraged\, but we’ll work that out at the trailheads…no biggie \nThe Waterfalls \n\nSanta Susana\nDayton Canyon – 3 tiers!\nBell Canyon – multiple falls and cascades\n\nEach hike is relatively easy with the longest one at 2.3 miles and 500 feet total ascent. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Another HWD Original! \nMy Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! I’ve redesigned the hike so if you have done this with me in the past you can look forward to something a little different this time \nHike into History\nA Visit to the Rancho El Escorpion Lime Kiln \nBell Canyon is the location of the Rancho El Escorpion lime kiln site. The site sits on  a seam of limestone running from Bell Canyon to Dayton Canyon and the Woolsey Canyon area (the sites of 2 more kilns). The kiln was constructed over a time period starting between the late 18th  and early 19th  centuries by a succession of native Chumash people and others of mixed Chumash and Mexican heritage. \nThe kiln was used to process quicklime (used on the San Fernando Mission buildings) throughout the nineteenth century. Over the years the kiln has become almost entirely covered with dirt\, its mouth filled in\, and is difficult to see (without me showing it to you). \n\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				2018\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				1987\n				\n		\n\n  \nViewing the Bell Canyon Limestone Quarry \nIn 1939 to 1941\, the limestone hilltop at the mouth of Bell Canyon was used to face the Sepulveda Dam Basin. \n\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”warning”] Hike is about 4.5 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as MEDIUM+ due to terrain. SUMMARY:Oak Canyon to China Flat - A Double Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike was requested by the original Mark E🙋🏻‍♂️. \nPerched 2\,000 feet above sea level in the hills between Simi Valley\, Oak Park and Thousand Oaks\, China Flat is an idyllic 1\,100-acre oak meadow that features rocky sandstone outcroppings and native oak woodlands.\nAlong our route we will pass by an old cistern\, a small silo and an abandoned farm vehicle that are vestiges of the area’s ranching history. There is also a vernal pond. \nWe’ll get there via the Rocky Ridge Open Space – a steep climb on the east side of Oak Canyon Community Park. After a loop around China Flat we will regturn via the China Flat Trail then down along Medea Creek that flows through the park into a duck pond by our cars. \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1600′ total ascent and rated MEDIUM+ – see the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nWe’ll be meeting by the duck pond at Oak Canyon Community Park in the first lot immediately to the left after entrance \nIMPORTANT\nTrail statistics are approximate. SUMMARY:Falls Creek Lollipop & HWD Ranch West
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be modifying a difficult hike and making it a medium one this time. We begin in the prestigious gated neighborhood of the Indian Springs Estates in Chatsworth. From there we head north and enter Indian Springs Open Space\, set within the backdrop of surrounding open and untouched mountains\, ravines and hillsides. \nAfter a little more trekking we will find ourselves in Rocky Peak Park. This extraordinary property forms the most critical wildlife habitat linkage between the Simi Hills and the Santa Susana Mountains. Spectacular sandstone boulders\, outcroppings\, oak savannahs\, and perennial water sources provide a diverse habitat for birds\, mammals\, and reptiles. \nWe’ll be taking our snack break atop a hill at the HWD Ranch West surrounded by old farm\, ranching equipment (see featured photo) and commanding views. \nHISTORICAL NOTES\nDuring our hike we’ll be passing by land that was once the homesteaded property (Fern Ann Falls) of the first American family to settle in the San Fernando Valley: Neils and Ann Johnson. They moved to the property in 1874 and homestead papers were filed in 1899. \nAlmost 20 years ago while exploring the homesteaded area I came across some of the “trails” we’ll be using. Back then they were just overgrown paths left over by human activity during a bygone era. My old “secret trails” are now established LA County trails; hikers\, bikers and equestrians are permitted through the estate gates. \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1\,600 feet total ascent and rated MEDIUM+. SUMMARY:Hiking with Mark E: Caballero Canyon to San Vicente Mtn. Park
DESCRIPTION:We’ll start up the single track in pretty Caballero Canyon to Dirt Mulholland\, and then head East on the fire road for only less than a 1/4 mile and take another single track trail through beautiful canyons to a scenic overlook with views of the San Fernando Valley and the ocean. Here we will take a short rest before continuing toward San Vicente Mtn. Park\, home of one of the most well-preserved\, former Nike Missile Bases in the Southland. \nWe’ll take a break at the park\, eat our snacks\, and check out the stunning\, 360-degree views from the lookout (including the nearby Encino Reservoir). Then we’ll backtrack on the Dirt Mulholland to Caballero trail back to our cars. \nHere’s a rough AllTrails link to the route. \nSTATS\nLevel: Moderate\nGain: ~ 1\,200 ft.\nDistance: ~ 8 miles\nTime: ~ 3.5-4 hours\nType: Lollipop w/a few out-and-back sections and loops\, single track dirt and fire road\, entirely exposed\nDogs: Not permitted (trail crosses into Topanga St Park)\nWater: N/A @ TH\nRestrooms: N/A @ TH; there’s a Von’s at 18411 Clark St.\, a block E of Reseda\, and S of the 101 and N of Ventura Blvd. There are restrooms are available at San Vicente Mtn. Park.\nParking: Free parking (no pass reqd) on both sides of Reseda Blvd.\nBring: Hat\, sunscreen\, 2-3 liters of water\, layered clothing \nDIRECTIONS\nFor GPS\, use 4047 Reseda Blvd.\, Tarzana\, CA 91356. From the 101 Fwy\, exit at Reseda Blvd and turn South. Drive for about 2.2 miles\, crossing Burbank and Ventura Blvds (don’t go to the very top of Reseda Blvd).\nThe TH is on the East side of Reseda Blvd. across the street from Braemar Country Club; it’s clearly marked with a big sign. SUMMARY:🥳New Year Hike: Lynnmere Loop in Wildwood
DESCRIPTION:Happy 2024!\nWe’ll be starting our hike on the Castillo Trail in Wildwood Park\, probably a new trail head for many of you. From there we’ll descend into Wildwood Canyon with a couple of creek crossings and hook up with the Lynnmere Trail. We’ll loop around the south side of Wildwood Park with awesome views of Mount Clef Ridge and the Conejo Canyons Open Space. \nThis hike will be about 6 miles with 1500 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD hike rating guide \nDirections \nHead for the address posted and park on street. We meet in the cul-de-sac. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.\nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers.
