SUMMARY:(Friday) Mt. Lowe Railroad/Inspiration Pt/Echo Mt. - 11.5 Mile Loop
DESCRIPTION:All aboard for the Self-Guided Hiking Tour of the Historic Mt Lowe Pacific Electric Railroad with stops at Echo Mountain\, Ye Alpine Tavern\, Inspiration Point and points in between: \nStation 1: Echo MountainStation 2: View of Circular BridgeStation 3: Cape of Good HopeStation 4: Dawn Station/Devil’s SlideStation 5: Horseshoe CurveStation 6: Circular BridgeStation 7: Horseshoe Curve OverviewStation 8: Granite GateStation 9: Ye Alpine TavernStation 10: Inspiration Point \nRequired reading: (http://mtlowe.net/self_guided_tour.htm) http://mtlowe.net/self_guided_tour.htm \nThis hike is considered one of the most important historical railway hikes in the United States. \nHere is a video of the Mt Lowe Trolley: \nWe won’t be doing the first incline. Go in about 30 sec to start at Station 1. Watch for the Circular Bridge (Station 6). \nTotal elevation gain is about 3000 ft. There will be many stops along the way so clear your calendar for this day. Stamp this hike “strenuous.” \nBackstory \nProfessor Thaddeus Lowe\, Civil War balloonist\, man of fame and fortune\, was the quintessential California dreamer. His dream was to build a railway into—and a resort complex atop—the San Gabriel Mountains high above Pasadena. In the 1890s\, his dream became a reality. During the height of its popularity\, millions took Professor Lowe’s “Railway to the Clouds” to fine hotels and spectacular views of Southern California. Until it was abandoned in the 1930s\, it was the Southland’s most popular tourist attraction. \nDirections to Trailhead \nFrom I-210\, in Pasadena\, exit at Lake Ave. north. Drive 3.6 miles North on Lake Ave. to E Loma Alta Drive; the old stone entrance to the Cobb Estate is located where the two streets meet. Park along the street\, being sure not to block private driveways. \nWeather Watch \nAltadena WeatherCam (http://www.westphalfamily.com/wxdata2.html) \nForecast (http://www.findlocalweather.com/pinpoint/us/ca/mount+lowe+railway+historical+marker/current15618.html)

SUMMARY:Garapito Canyon - Eagle Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \n \nOur hike begins at the top of Reseda Blvd\, the western gateway to the Big Wild. Shortly after the hike begins we descend along the Bent Arrow Trail — a narrow path that will take us on winding route up a south-facing slope that finally tops out on a rounded\, nearly flat ridge. A grassy knoll to our right marks the start of the Garapito Canyon Trail \n \nWe’ll descend the narrow Garapito Trail cutting a sinuous course through mature chaparral — mostly mountain mahogany and ceanothus up to 20 feet tall. The blossoms of the ceanothus exude an attractive wild honey scent in spring. Tunneling through the tall brush\, the trail eventually switchbacks down to the sycamore-shaded canyon bottom\, crossing two forks of Garapito Creek and then contours a short distance over to an east fork. \n \nThe climb out of Garapito Canyon will bring us to our detination: Eagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park. It will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will snack and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \n \nTo make this a loop we’ll return to the Bent Arrow trail via the Temescal Ridge Trail. Hike is about 8 miles with 1500′ total ascent.Directions \nFrom the 101 in Tarzana exit Reseda Blvd and head south. Go about 3 miles and drive into the park near the top of Reseda. There is a painted line crossing Reseda Blvd inside the park. Parking is free on the downhill side of the line. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER.

SUMMARY:Corral Canyon - Puerco Canyon Loop - Malibu Seafood - BYOB
DESCRIPTION:Details\nOn this one we’ll visit the old pig farm and have a post-hike lunch at Malibu Seafood Patio where they let you bring your own drink. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. We’ll return to the restaurant via another secret trail \nWe’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and mysterious buildings… \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is about 6 miles with about 1\,250 ft total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. Kitchen opens at 11:00 AM. Maybe we’ll spot some dolphins frolicking in the waves\, or some celebrities. \n \nThey let you bring your own beverages including booze. So pack a cooler with your favorite beverage and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch by the trailhead — you will deserve it! I’ll bring some white wine. \nBring sunscreen\, hat\, 2 quarts water\, sturdy shoes and a snack. SUMMARY:Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is slightly strenuous with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \n \n \nAfter-hike shenanigans will take place at Spruzzo Malibu (http://www.spruzzomalibu.com/)\, right on the corner of Busch Dr and PCH — you pass it on the way out. \nDirections: From Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu\, one mile west of Kanan Dume Road\, turn north on Bonsall Drive. Follow Bonsall to its dead end at the mouth of Zuma Canyon. Ample\, FREE parking. \nBring at least one qt water\, hiking shoes/boots\, hat\, sunscreen\, snacks \nNote: When leaving\, do not return to PCH on Bonsall. Instead\, make a right on Rainsford Place\, then left on Busch Dr to PCH. \nEvent rules: \n1. Carpooling is desired. There is a convenient park-and-ride at Kanan & 101.\n2. All hikers must stay on established trails\n3. No use of flour or chalk to mark trails.\n4. Practice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints

SUMMARY:🌚 No Moon Hike: Natoma Loop and a Little More
DESCRIPTION:Natoma Loop Trail is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located in Woodland Hills. Green and/or red lights are ok. If you don’t have one walk with someone who does or don’t bother attending. Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes. https://amzn.to/2E9Fb30. (emergencies excepted\, of course) \nIt will be a warm evening but at least the sun won’t be beating down on us while we watch it set with great views of the Valley. Bring something cold to drink at the top 🍺🍹 \nNOTE: YOU SHOULD WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHERE SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. BRINGING A MASK OR FACE COVERING IS MANDATORY FOR ATTENDING THIS HIKE. \nDirections \nProceed to the south end of Natoma Ave and park on right side of street in dirt lot. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. DESCRIPTION:All aboard for the Self-Guided Hiking Tour of the Historic Mt Lowe Pacific Electric Railroad with stops at Echo Mountain\, Ye Alpine Tavern\, Inspiration Point and points in between: \nStation 1: Echo Mountain\nStation 2: View of Circular Bridge\nStation 3: Cape of Good Hope\nStation 4: Dawn Station/Devil’s Slide\nStation 5: Horseshoe Curve\nStation 6: Circular Bridge\nStation 7: Horseshoe Curve Overview\nStation 8: Granite Gate\nStation 9: Ye Alpine Tavern\nStation 10: Inspiration Point \nRequired reading: (http://mtlowe.net/self_guided_tour.htm) http://mtlowe.net/self_guided_tour.htm \nThis hike is considered one of the most important historical railway hikes in the United States.

SUMMARY:Full Moon over Chatsworth
DESCRIPTION:I am putting together a full moon hike for Saturday night in Chatsworth’s Deerlake Highlands. Hike will be about 3.5 miles total with about 1000 feet total ascent. I promise there won’t be any bushwhacking or poison oak. \nOur destination will be the west peak of Twin Peaks — 1\,718 ft above sea level. \nHike is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. See the hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nThis hike is not suitable for beginners. \nBring some adult beverages to share and food for yourself (or share). Please bring your own cups and plates. \n👉NO WHITE LIGHTS ALLOWED ON HIKE. Green and/or red lights are ok (but lights will probably not be needed since the area will be well lit). If you require a white light then this hike is not for you. Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes. https://amzn.to/2E9Fb30. (emergencies excepted\, of course) \nIt will be a warm evening but at least the sun will be low on the horizon when we start. We will watch it set with great views of the Valley. Don’t forget to bring something cold to drink for the peak top 🍺🍹 \nNOTE: YOU SHOULD WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHERE SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. BRINGING A MASK OR FACE COVERING IS MANDATORY FOR ATTENDING THIS HIKE. \nAlthough the moon won’t be quite 100% full\, it will be high in the sky for our return to car. Lights will probably not be needed. \nSunset: 8:08 pm\nMoonrise: 4:50 pm (89.1% full) \nDIRECTIONS TO PARKING \nOur parking and meetup spot is on a new-homes construction site. The streets are paved and the lots are marked\, but there are no homes built yet. Its easy to get to\, however\, some of the streets are so new\, they are not on some maps (or GPS) yet\, so pay attention to these directions! \n21600 Poema Pl is an address near the parking area. The Meetup map works on Android (Google maps) and takes you to parking area via Canoga Ave. \nIf you are using iPhone or car GPS\, you may need the following directions\, or type in the coordinates 34.279440\,-118.600440 \n🚗From Canoga Ave – go north on Canoga Ave past the 118. Bear right and enter the Deerlake Ranch development; head uphill and make a left on Poema Pl. Go past the 21600 address\, cross the bridge\, then turn right into the construction site for Crestley Homes. Park in cul de sac to the right \n🚙From Topanga Cyn Blvd – go north on Topanga past the 118. Turn right on Poema Pl\, but don’t go all the way to 21600. Before the bridge turn left into Crestly Homes consruction site. Park in cul de sac on right. \nHere is a satellite photo for reference

SUMMARY:Journey to the Center of the City - Franklin Canyon
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This HDW original is a classic. On this 6-7 mile hike I will take you through Franklin Canyon and then a bit off-trail to the “planar” center of Los Angeles. It will make a great photo opp. There will be about 1200 ft of  total ascent. It is rated MEDIUM \nFranklin Canyon Park is one of the very few places in LA with a greenbelt filled with pines\, sycamore\, eucalyptus and cedars\, most notably the Atlas Cedar and mature Coast Redwoods that are a rare site in most big cities. \nHighlights along the way to the center of the city: \nFranklin Canyon Lake:\nThe location where we see Opie skipping a rock in the water during the opening credits of The Andy Griffith Show and Capt. Kirk falling in love with an Indian maiden on Star Trek. \n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”52894″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/dIf5xKdKGe0″ align=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row] \nThe Doheny House:\nThe family of oil baron Edward L. Doheny used the canyon as a summer retreat and a place to graze and water their cattle. The Doheny family built a Spanish style home here in 1935. \n \nHeavenly Pond:\nA small duck pond located to the west of the Franklin Canyon Lake. See the turtles? \n \nBring snacks and a quart of water. \n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Click to RSVP” shape=”square” color=”danger” size=”lg” align=”left” i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-ticket” add_icon=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.meetup.com%2Flocalhikers%2Fevents%2F272239861%2F||target:%20_blank|rel:nofollow”][/vc_column][/vc_row] \nHere are some scenes from some popular TV shows and movies filmed at Franklin Canyon. Do you recognize any?\n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”52893\,52892\,52891\,52890″ img_size=””][/vc_column][/vc_row] \nFor you music lovers\, here are a couple of albums covers photographed in Franklin Canyon:\n[vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”52897″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”52896″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column] \n  \nDirections – Parking is Free\nFrom West Los Angeles: \nHead north on Beverly Drive following signs to Coldwater Canyon. Turn left on Coldwater/Beverly Drive\, and turn left again on Beverly Drive\, at Fire Station No. 2. The third right is Franklin Canyon Drive. Continue through the residential area to park entrance. At the intersection of Franklin Canyon Drive and Lake Drive turn right onto Lake and head toward the end of Lake Dr to parking lot next to large grass lawn. \n(If you are coming down Sunset from east of Beverly Dr its probably easier to take Rexford to Beverly) \nFrom the San Fernando Valley: \nThis is one of those cases when the GPS will mess you up using the destination address. But if you use the address 2300 Lake Dr you will get real close and you just need to keep driving  0.3 miles to near end of road (works with Google Maps/Android). \nHere are the written directions to 1930. You will drive past many parking lots and turnouts. Keep driving until you can see the chain-link fence at end of road \nTake the 101 to Coldwater Canyon Boulevard. Head south to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90 degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Drive just before Coldwater merges into Mulholland Dr.  Road signs read “Road Closed 800 Feet” “Sunset to Sunrise”; this is the park entrance. Do NOT make a U-turn as this will bring you onto Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. Stay on paved surface\, drive past the Outdoor Classroom/Nature Center\, and continue south of the lake for 1.5 miles\, bearing left onto Lake Dr at stop sign\, and head toward the end of Lake Dr to large parking lot next to large grass lawn. You will drive 0.6 mi past the sign for “Franklin Canyon Ranch” then 0.3 mile past the point marked 2300 Lake Dr  to the large parking lot on the left \nInteractive Map\n \nHere is an aerial and street view of your destination

SUMMARY:🥭 Malibu Mango Madness
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”danger”]PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nCome celebrate the relaunch of the HWD website and the 5th anniversary of the VIP Circle (aka the VIP Club). \nHike Details\nWe’ll do a hike in Malibu and have a post-hike lunch at our favorite Malibu restaurant where I will be serving up Mango Margaritas and who knows what else. We’ll return to the restaurant via another secret trail \nWe’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and mysterious buildings… \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 4.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1150 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \n  \nCheck out my slide show from various similar hikes\n \nPost-Hike Lunch\nAfter the hike we’ll have lunch next door at Malibu Seafood Patio. Kitchen opens at 11:00 AM. I’ll be serving free margaritas to our VIP Circle members. Maybe we’ll spot some dolphins frolicking in the waves\, or some celebrities. \n \nThey let you bring your own beverages including booze. So feel free to pack a cooler with your favorite beverage and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch by the trailhead — I’ll bring the Margaritas. \nBring sunscreen\, hat\, 2 quarts water\, sturdy shoes and a snack. Clothing optional. \nDirections\nProceed to restaurant. There is street parking on PCH\, $12.00 at the iron ranger in trail head parking lot next to restaurant  — cc ok. We’ll meet in the upper right hand corner of pay lot. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. \nHighlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. After crossing the bridge we’ll take Summer Hill Ranch trail to the Canyon Overlook. Here\, either at a picnic table or atop a sandstone outcrop\, we’ll enjoy a potluck party with excellent views of Topanga Canyon’s trademark geology and of Santa Maria Canyon. There are caves and crevices to explore too! \nSo bring some snacks and drink to share under the full moon.\nHere is a slide show from a daytime version of this hike: \n \n  \nNO WHITE LIGHTS – Red and Green lights only. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nOur route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. Our destination awaits us! \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 5.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,200 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections:\nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, head north on Palisades Drive. After 2.4 miles. Turn left onto Vereda de la Montura\, (the same turnoff for the trailhead for hikes in Santa Ynez Canyon and Santa Ynez Falls) and make an immediate right on Michael Lane. Drive half a mile to the trailhead\, which will be on the left (look for what looks like a private driveway). For those of you who are familiar with my Goat Peak hike\, this will be a slightly shorter version\, but with the same elevation gain. Two segments\, one 1.5 miles and another 0.5 miles\, will be overgrown and may require some bushwhacking in places. I would like to clear theses segments of low-hanging branches (for the tall people) and other obstacles so bring some small hand garden tools for snipping and/or sawing branches ant twigs.  Its not certain we will need any tools\, just want to be prepared \nWe’ll have a nice long snack break at the Will Rogers State Historic Park Visitor Center \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 6 MILES WITH ABOUT 2\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nAnother HWD Exclusive \nOn February 21\, 2020 the MRCA announced that they acquired and opened a new 257-acre park in Browns Canyon in one of the most vibrant wildlife habitats in the southern Santa Susana Mountains. The stunning Hidden Creeks parkland—which had\, as recently as last year\, been proposed to be developed into a gated community of 188 luxury houses—is located at the confluence of Browns Creek and Mormon Creek. The property provides a key migration corridor and perennial water source to a full complement of large mammals including black bear\, mountain lion\, mule deer\, bobcat\, American badger\, grey fox\, long-tailed weasel\, ring-tailed cat\, and the endangered California Condor. \nNature won’t be the only thing we’ll experience. We may get a chance to meet Ferdinand\, a bull that roams the area. There are lots of old artifacts to explore along the way\, including old ranch houses\, abandoned ranch vehicles\, a dam and much more! So expect a lot of stops along the way. Hike will last longer than normal. \nShortly after the announcement all LA trails closed. None of the trails here have been established or published as of yet and the best access requires crossing private property. But during the trail closures Katja\, Cristina and I explored the nooks and crannies of this new open space over many weekends. We also answered the philosophical question: “If a trail has never been opened\, can it be closed?” \nI’ll post some photos from the exploratories later…check back often \nI do have carte blanch permission from the property owner for access and I can’t wait to show the group this new gem of open space and its myriad of trails. RSVP below to be part of the first Meetup group to hike these trails \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS 6-8 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. You  can park in turnout immediately before or immediately after that. We’ll meet in the driveway by that sign. See 2nd pic below. This is the entrance to the old Misty Hollow ranch\, now owned by MRCA and part of their park system. We’ll start at Trippet Ranch parking lot and end outside the ranch on Entrada Rd for a loop. Our trip to the rock will traverse a seldom used trail across a large meadow\, through tall chaparral and a shady oak forest\, and up along Cheney Ridge. \nHere is a video highlighting our route\n \n  \n🥂Bring a sack lunch\, booze to share\,  and we’ll have a picnic on The Rock \n  \n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ALMOST 6 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,250 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SUMMARY:🎄 Xmas Day Hike - Bell Canyon Loop (Gentiles welcome)
DESCRIPTION:My Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! \n👉 Hike is about 4 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as DIFFICULT due to terrain. See my hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \n😷 PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT. \nDIRECTIONS:\nHead toward the address given above but instead of turning on Woodglade Ln\, just park on Highlander Rd. We meet near the corner of Highlander Rd and Woodlade Ln. by the ball field \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER (see https://www.hikingwithdean.com/liability-waiver) and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.

BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nGet ready for a hike in Malibu Creek State Park the other groups never do. Our old destination\, the stone house\, is gone but this moderately strenuous 7-miler is still a great diversion from the usual MCSP treks. We’ll start at the western end of Crags Rd near Malibou Lake and head on up to Lakeside Lateral and the Bulldog Mtwy via Maqueketa Terrace. We’ll loop the lateral and from there we descend down along the Bulldog Lateral. Bulldog is a fire road/powerline access road that descends crookedly along slopes thickly clothed in chaparral and will provide rewarding views of Goat Buttes. \nNear the bottom we’ll come across a dry creek bed then take Crags Rd to the MASH site. After paying homage to Hawkeye\, we’ll visit the Lost Cabin site. The trail to the site probably has the most beautiful surroundings in the park with the red sandstone Goat Buttes to the north and green\, rugged mountains to the south. It is very secluded with few travelers. \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections:\nWe’ll meet on the corner of Crags Dr and Lookout Dr. Park on neighboring streets such as Lookout Dr\, Seminole Dr or Olivera Dr. See map below. [Note: I haven’t been here since before the Woolsey fire and there might be some changes to parking since some of the homes were burnt] \n[vc_message icon_fontawesome=”fas fa-car-side”]NOTE: The Google Map link isn’t working correctly. But if you key in the address manually Google Map will take you to the correct location. In any case here are the written directions from the 101 and Kanan. If you know how to get to the Malibu Reagan Ranch or Paramount Ranch you are almost there. \nFrom the 101 head south on Kanan Rd for about 1/3 mile and turn left on Cornell Way. Continue on Cornell Way for about 2.3 miles. After crossing Mulholland the name changes to Lake Vista Way; continue for 1.1 miles to Crags Dr. Turn left for 0.6 miles and find a place to park according the description above[/vc_message]\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nO’Melveny Park spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nOur hike here constitutes a comprehensive tour that includes wandering through grasslands\, the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point and down into steep and shady Bee Canyon . \nHistorical Note\nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 4.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nWe begin our journey hiking south into Liberty Canyon — one of three natural preserves in Malibu Creek State Park. The canyon has a rare stand of California Valley Oak. Soon we will cross Liberty Creek turn west onto and up the Phantom Trail. After a couple miles the trail puts us down onto Mulholland Hwy. We proceed across Mulholland onto the Cistern Trail in Malibu Creek Stat Park. The Cistern Trail ascends a bit as it leaves Mulholland Highway\, but soon after begins heading downhill\, with views of Reagan Ranch off to the right\, and the Goat Buttes and Castro Crest of Malibu Creek State Park ahead. \nAfter a short distance we will merge with the Lookout Trail and take that down to Century Lake for a snack/lunch break next to the water.  For our return\, we will  take Cragg’s Rd to Grasslands Trail back to Mulholland and then north on Liberty Canyon to close the loop. \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN.
