SUMMARY:💦Wet & Wild(wood) - 🧺Potluck Picnic
DESCRIPTION:This hike is the perfect summer hike. It will require several stream crossings along the Arroyo Conejo and Wildwood Canyon Creek so wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet (if you don’t like walking on rocks); shorts recommended \nWe’ll visit the Wetlands and have a picnic lunch at shady Skunk Hollow\, a tree-lined area adjacent to a flowing creek with a picnic table. A nice little area. It will be almost all downhill to Skunk Hollow — \n🍴😋Bring some food and drink to share🥂 and your own utensils\, etc. \nWe’ll return to the cars via my secret trail and more stream crossings. Hike will be about 7 miles with 950 ft total ascent (it can be shortened to 5.5 miles and 600′ ascent with two less stream crossings if weather demands it) and rated MEDIUM. See Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS:\nPark and meet under the trailhead tree at the end of Calle Yucca. Please respect the residents’ peace 🤪

SUMMARY:🌅Summer Solstice Hike: Corral/Puerco Canyon Loop-Lunch 🦞 Malibu Seafood - BYOB
DESCRIPTION:The Summer Solstice falls on June 20th at 1:50pm…And what better way to start the summer with a short hike and lunch at Malibu Seafood — HWD’s favorite post-hike lunch venue? \nVideo: https://youtu.be/NJP-m1tCXxM?si=uSPgQmYCYb2QG54C with celebrity spottings \nOur hike will begin at sea level next to Malibu Seafood in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. After a while and an easy creek crossing\, We leave Corral Canyon for my hiking through pristine wilderness along the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. \nWe’ll return to the restaurant via another trail making a loop. Along the way we’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and some mysterious buildings… \n🦞🍷After the hike we’ll have lunch next door at Malibu Seafood Patio & Kitchen. Maybe we’ll spot some dolphins frolicking in the waves\, or some celebrities. \n🍾They let you bring your own beverages including booze. So pack a cooler with your favorite beverage and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch by the ocean and trailhead — you will deserve it! I’ll bring some white wine. \nHike is about 4.5 miles with about 1\,100 ft of total ascent and rated MEDIUM due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nBring sunscreen\, hat\, 2 quarts water\, sturdy shoes and snacks. Clothing optional. \nDIRECTIONS\nDrive to Malibu Seafood at 25653 Pacific Coast Hwy and park on PCH or pay $12.00(?) at Sara Wan trailhead parking lot. Iron ranger accepts credit cards \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER.

SUMMARY:E.T. Hike - 🐶s OK
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nWe’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008 with the original HWD ET hike and its become one of our most popular hikes. We’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie\, and will take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. So let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak-and sycamore-shaded canyons and eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights. \n🎥Click or tap here for complete hike description with a special video that juxtaposes our hike with movie scenes \n🍺Post hike lunch is at Islands down the street at 11400 Porter Ranch Dr \nDon’t forget hiking gear for your dog: https://amzn.to/3uk05AP \nHike is about 8.3 miles with about 1\,300 ft total ascent. And is rated MEDIUM. See hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDirections to Trailhead\nHead for the North Valley YMCA on Corbin Ave. Before you get to the entrance (traveling north)\, park on street — you will see the YMCA sign. \nImportant \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. SUMMARY:Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is slightly strenuous with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \nDIRECTIONS\nMeet at the Zuma Canyon Trailhead parking lot at\n5721 Bonsall Dr · Malibu\, CA \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. SUMMARY:Mission Point The Hard Way
DESCRIPTION:See the hike report from last year’s trip: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/mission-point-the-hard-way \nO’Melveny Park spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nNormally our hike to the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point uses the steep Grotto Trail or my alternate no-name one u. Our return would use the Bee Canyon trail \nHowever\, this time we will explore some of those little used and overgrown trails we have seen crisscrossing our other paths. Instead of returning via Bee Canyon\, we’ll use the Pipleline Trail (an alternate to Neon Way) \nTrekking poles recommended for this one: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \nHike is about 5 miles with 1800 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide \nHistorical Note \nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \nDirections \nHead for O’Melveny Park using the map pin and Google Maps. The parking lot is small and fills up quickly. Plan on parking on neighboring streets. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated.\nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:🌕Easy Full Moon Hike & Potluck at Olympia Farms
DESCRIPTION:No white lights allowed on my night hikes. Bring a red or green headlamp\, like this one: https://amzn.to/3VgjTWI \nOn a recent hike we discovered a great spot for a Full Moon Hike and Potluck. Its up on a hill overlooking Olympia Farms at Rancho Potrero. Atop the hill we’ll find relatively new picnic benches sitting on some old foundations dating back to the 1980s. \nIn March\, the Full Moon is the Worm Moon; if it occurs on or after March 21\, it is also the Paschal Moon. Tonight it will be 99.1% full. \n🧺🍷Bring food and drink to share. Since this will be an easy hike you can load up those backpacks more than usual 😋 \nSunset: 7:10 pm\nMoonrise: 6:55 pm \n⚠️No white lights allowed on my full moon hikes. Bring a red or green headlamp\, like this one: https://amzn.to/3VgjTWI. If your vision requires a white light\, do not attend this hike. \nAt 5.5 miles and with 850′ of total ascent\, I am rating this hike EASY+ — see the HWD Hike Rating Guide. \nDirections\nWe will meet at the trailhead where S. Wendy Drive ends at Potrero Rd. If you require a real address\, point your GPS to 1360 S Wendy Dr\, Newbury Park\, CA 91320 and park on Potrero. Look for the alcoholics wearing backpacks 🤪

SUMMARY:In Search of Waterfalls at Malibu Creek State Park
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Scroll Down to RSVP” style=”custom” custom_background=”#ffffff” custom_text=”#1c9ec5″ shape=”square” link=”url:%23rsvp”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I have recently learned that there are three waterfalls in Malibu Creek State Park. Two of them are illustrated in the 1983 and 1996 edition of Milt McAuley’s Hiking Trails of Malibu Creek State Park \n[asa2 tpl=”Book” align=”center” ajax=”1″]094256829X[/asa2] \nbut there are no directions or trails described. I found the person who took the photograph (several years ago) shown here and he described the location of one of them. Next to it is McCauley’s illustration. \n \nThe location of the 2nd waterfall remains a mystery. All I know it that its somewhere on or near the Mendenhall homestead (from the 1860s). I do know the location of the homestead so at least our search radius will be limited. Here is McCauley’s illustration: \n \nIn a perfect world this would be an easy hike with less than 4 miles and  about 600 feet of total ascent. Add to that some meandering\, creeking and bushwhacking making things more difficult.  I did find some overgrown trails  using satellite imagery that we will follow. Here is a 1976 view of the Mendenhall homestead area along with a modern view. I’ve marked a spot where I believe the waterfall may be. \n \nWear long pants\, long sleeves and bring with you a sense of adventure! \nOur Meeting Spot\nWe will meet on the corner of Seminole Dr and Crags Dr in the Malibou Lake neighborhood. Point your GPS to 1912 Seminole Rd and park on street — off pavement — close to the corner. \n \n  \nHere is a street view of approach to corner \n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Olympia Farms to Hidden Pond at Rancho Potrero Open Space
DESCRIPTION:I’ve never seen water at Hidden Pond\, so let’s go check it out. Along the way we will loop around Rancho Potrero Open Space. I believe there is another little pond nearby – we’ll check that out also. \nOn the west end of the space is a property that used to be called Olympia Farms\, which was owned by Greek immigrant\, textile businessman and Arabian horse breeder George Patarias Huck. (Huck was tragically shot and killed in front of his home in Mt. Olympus in August 1984 at age 46.) \nHuck’s 638 acre property was sold to the Mountains Recreation and Conservancy\, City of Thousand Oaks\, Conejo Recreation and Park District and National Park Service for $4.2 million in 1993. 312 acres were carved out as an addition to Rancho Sierra Vista. The remainder is part of Rancho Potrero\, which is maintained by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA). \nIn the 2021-2022 time frame\, the Olympia Farms space was redeveloped and improved to include\, pedestrian paths\, a horse corral\, drinking fountain for people and animals\, picnic benches and a small amphitheater area. \n👉🏻Hike is about 8 miles with 1600′ total ascent and rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections:\nThe Rancho Potrero Open Space area is located in Newbury Park off of Lynn Road\, just east of the intersection with Rancho Dos Vientos.

SUMMARY:Natoma Loop - Vanalden Caves & More
DESCRIPTION:The Natoma Loop Trail is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop located in Woodland Hills. See Hike Rating guide here \nDirections \nProceed to the south end of Natoma Ave and park on right side of street in dirt lot. Lot is across the street from given address \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.\nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Hail To The Trail: Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:An HWD Classic! \nThis hike is sponsored by Amazon – https://amzn.to/2GnCP0a \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide – \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mulholland Hwy \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. We’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail. \n(Optional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures) \n👉Hike is 4.7 miles with about 1\,200 feet total gain and rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nWe’ll have our snack break at a hidden cistern. Don’t drink the water 😆 \nDirections\nThe trail head is located on Mulholland Hwy less than a fifth of a mile west of Dry Canyon Cold Creek Road. See my interactive map \nCoordinates: 34.12666\, -118.65748 \nFrom the 101 freeway in Agoura/Calabasas\, head South on Las Virgenes Road to Mulholland Hwy. Turn Left on Mulholland and continue 5.7 miles to a small parking area on the right. or…. \nFrom 101 Ventura Fwy in the Vally: take Valley Circle/Mulholland Dr exit south\, turn right on Valmar Rd (becomes Old Topanga Cyn Rd) then right on Mulholland Hwy 2.1 miles to the parking area on the left. \nFrom PCH take Topanga Canyon and turn left up Old Topanga. Take a left at Mulholland Hwy for a couple miles and then turn left onto turnout. If you are coming up Malibu Canyon take a right at Mulholland for 5.7 miles \nPark off-pavement. There is overflow parking 500′ south (“west”) across the street next to the house. \nImportant \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers.
