SUMMARY:Happy Camp Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:The last time we were here was January 18\, 2011\, and so here we are again. \nHappy Camp Canyon Park\, north of Moorpark in the Santa Susana Mountains\, was home to several Chumash Indian groups. Later\, it was part of the immense Strathearn Ranch\, founded by a pioneer Simi Valley family. They ran cattle on the land and enjoyed family vacations in the back part of the canyon. \nThe 3\,000 acre park has retained its natural setting and is an important wildlife corridor linking the Simi Hills with the Santa Susana Mountains. It is a lush riparian oak woodland with an intermittant stream. The canyon is sheltered by Oak Ridge to the north and Big Mountain to the south. \nThis loop hike will follow the Happy Camp Trail through the interior of the park on an abandoned ranch road. The trail winds through open grasslands and the gorgeous stream-fed forested canyon. Wildlife include rabbits\, bobcats and Golden Eagles. \nHighlights along the way: \n-oyster and clam rich shales\n-yellow and red rock outcroppings – formed from underground oil fires\n-acorn woodpeckers\n-ranch artifacts \nHike is strenuous at 11 miles and 1850 ft total ascent \nDirections to trail head \nFrom the 118 Fwy in Simi or the 101/23 Fwys in Thousand Oaks\, take the E Los Angeles Ave/23 North exit. Go west 1 mile to Moorpark Av (Hwy 23) and turn right (north). Proceed north 2.6 miles on Hwy 23 (name will change to Walnut Canyon Rd) until you come to a bend in the road. Don’t take the bend — Go straight onto Happy Camp Rd and then an immediate right on Broadway Rd. Park in lot at the east end of the road. \nLast time I was here there was a $5 parking fee in official lot\, but some free parking outside the official lot on street.

DESCRIPTION:Everyone did a great job last week on the Switchback Trail. Let’s do the same on the Valley of the Dolls Trail. If you’d like to help out please meet us at the north end of Canoga Ave under the 118 freeway on Jan 26 \nBring light garden tools (e.g. loppers\, snippers\, saws\, shears) wear good hiking shoes\, long pants\, long sleeve shirt and gloves. No digging will be necessary\, we just need to clear some brush growing in and across the trails and realign the path into the canyon. \nMy kingdom for a Sharon Tate/Jennifer North doll! We need to refresh the doll collection on Valley of the Dolls trail. Please bring any dolls you don’t need — or maybe buy one at the dollar store\, Goodwilll\, etc? SUMMARY:Adventure Hike: The Forgotten Trails of Cheeseboro & Las Virgenes Canyons
DESCRIPTION:Las Virgenes and Cheeseboro Canyons like you have never seen them before!\nThis adventure hike arose from an exploratory I did in April 2010. We’ll hike along forgotten ranch roads and use trails. It will include a hike over the eastern ridge of Cheeseboro Canyon and to the Baleen Wall along a forgotten and overgrown trail. We’ll then descend into Upper Las Virgenes Canyon by way of a vanished ranch road (This segment is sure to be very overgrown. Be prepared for a little bushwhacking). SUMMARY:Pre-Game Hike: Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads
DESCRIPTION:Don’t forget to join our FB group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nOur 5th Annual Super Bowl Pre-Game Hike is perfect. Short enough to get you home on time and prepare for parties and kickoff\, yet big on beauty and adventure. \n \nOur destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. SUMMARY:La Jolla Valley - Chumash - Ray Miller Loop
DESCRIPTION:Details\nJoin us and the small animals and birds of La Jolla Canyon on this loop hike with panoramic views of coastline and The Channel Islands. Flower blooms in the spring are phenomenal. One of the the main attractions are large swaths of native California grassland — some of the last remaining unspoiled areas in the state. \n\n\nBecause of the continued closure of the canyon trail up to the waterfall we are going to do this in a special way. We’ll meet on PCH at the entrance to the canyon and walk 2 miles down the ocean side of scenic PCH to the Chumash Trail. Several years ago PCH flooded out and broke up and had to be realigned — we’ll walk along the old broken PCH. \n  \n \nAlong the way we’ll have the opportunity to come face to face with Mugu Rock! You’ve seen it in the distance\, now you will be able to touch it. \n \nConsider the walk along PCH a warmup to the strenuous Chumash Trail. The Chumash trail is an ancient trail which leads from the Pacific Ocean to La Jolla Valley. It was used by the Chumash 7000 years ago\, and believed to be the oldest trail still in continuous use in the Santa Monica Mountains. \nThis trail is very strenuous with almost 1\,000 feet gain in only 0.6 miles. But the views from the top are spectacular \n \n  \nAfter we climb the Chumsh Trail we’ll swing around the Pt Mugu Peak Trail and bag Mugu Peak. We’ll take a group photo at the flag pole. Every year on 9/11\, since 2002\, chief selects from the Naval Base Ventura County replace the flag on Mugu Peak. The previous flag is retired in a ceremony on the base. \nHere we are a couple years back \n \n  \nAfter descending the peak we’ll head into the grasslands of La Jolla Valley \n \nWe’ll be taking our break at the hike-in campsite. There is a fancy outhouse there. One of the highlights along the way is this pond. Will there be water this week? Naw. \n \nAfter our lunch break we’ll hike along the ridge separating Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon. SUMMARY:Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Classic! \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \n \nThe site was owned by President Reagan between 1957 and 1967\, before he was elected Governor of California. Prior to the Woolsey fire\, the Reagan Ranch property still had the original barn and stables\, which were used as the park maintenance facility. \nTrails loop through rolling meadowlands and grand old oaks and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \n\n\nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. SUMMARY:Devil Canyon & Deerlake Highlands Adventure Hike
DESCRIPTION:I am calling this an “adventure hike” due to ongoing housing development in the area. There might be a little bushwhacking and some creeking. \nWe’ll be hiking on a couple trails we had cleaned up earlier this year. \nOur loop hike begins at the north end of Canoga Avenue and meanders north through Chatsworth’s Deer Lake Highlands and a network of of equestrian trails. From above the highlands we will descend into Echo Canyon creating a loop with Devils Canyon. Devils Canyon with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. DESCRIPTION:A loop hike along both sides of the eastern ridge of Sullivan Canyon. \nDetails\nThe hike down Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek through a shady canyon. The mountain\, a bench and the trail are named after Burt Elliott who was very active with Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Burt died of cancer in the Spring of 2014. He was the go-to guy for all things Conejo Open Space. We use the 2015 trail these days but here is what it looked like before that — just a little use trail that gave us something to complain about 🙀 \n \nWe began exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “The Weekday Hikers.” At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. From 2008 to 2011 Hill Canyon was the location of our unofficial club house. \n\n\nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting the use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. See the Hike Ratings Guide\n[/av_notification] \nPOST-HIKE LUNCH\nDon Cuco\, Moorpark\n254 Los Angeles Avenue \nWelcome \n \nAbout Hill Canyon\nHill Canyon is part of a system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus and ridge lines now known as the Conejo Canyons Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. The golf course plans got canceled and a land trade was worked out by the same city officials who caused the $2.6 million to be wasted. \nHill Canyon and the Western Plateau is now the Conejo Canyons Open Space. \nWho is that guy up there? \n \nBring 2 Qt water\, lugsoles\, snacks\, sunscreen\, hat \nParking\nThere are two parking lots — one at the trail head and one at the Park/corrals. The trail head lot is free. The corral lot was $4.00 but by the time of this hike its supposed to be free. We’ll meet at the trailhead lot (past the Park). \n \n“If you’re early\, you’re on time. SUMMARY:Garapito Canyon - Eagle Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \n \nOur hike begins at the top of Reseda Blvd\, the western gateway to the Big Wild. Shortly after the hike begins we descend along the Bent Arrow Trail — a narrow path that will take us on winding route up a south-facing slope that finally tops out on a rounded\, nearly flat ridge. A grassy knoll to our right marks the start of the Garapito Canyon Trail \n \nWe’ll descend the narrow Garapito Trail cutting a sinuous course through mature chaparral — mostly mountain mahogany and ceanothus up to 20 feet tall. The blossoms of the ceanothus exude an attractive wild honey scent in spring. Tunneling through the tall brush\, the trail eventually switchbacks down to the sycamore-shaded canyon bottom\, crossing two forks of Garapito Creek and then contours a short distance over to an east fork. \n \nThe climb out of Garapito Canyon will bring us to our detination: Eagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park. It will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will snack and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \n \nTo make this a loop we’ll return to the Bent Arrow trail via the Temescal Ridge Trail. Hike is about 8 miles with 1500′ total ascent.Directions \nFrom the 101 in Tarzana exit Reseda Blvd and head south. Go about 3 miles and drive into the park near the top of Reseda. There is a painted line crossing Reseda Blvd inside the park. DESCRIPTION:Details\nOn this one we’ll visit the old pig farm and have a post-hike lunch at Malibu Seafood Patio where they let you bring your own drink. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. SUMMARY:Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is slightly strenuous with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \n \n \nAfter-hike shenanigans will take place at Spruzzo Malibu (http://www.spruzzomalibu.com/)\, right on the corner of Busch Dr and PCH — you pass it on the way out. \nDirections: From Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu\, one mile west of Kanan Dume Road\, turn north on Bonsall Drive. Follow Bonsall to its dead end at the mouth of Zuma Canyon. Ample\, FREE parking. \nBring at least one qt water\, hiking shoes/boots\, hat\, sunscreen\, snacks \nNote: When leaving\, do not return to PCH on Bonsall. Instead\, make a right on Rainsford Place\, then left on Busch Dr to PCH. \nEvent rules: \n1. Carpooling is desired. There is a convenient park-and-ride at Kanan & 101.\n2. We will eat\, drink and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \nWe begin hiking at Trippet Ranch\, walking north on a paved driveway about 100 yards to where the Musch Trail slants to the right across a grassy hillside. \n \nOn that trail we’ll plunge into the shade of oak and bay laurel trees. After contouring around a couple of north-flowing ravines\, we rise to meet a trailside campground at the former Musch Ranch. \n \nBeyond the campground\, Musch Trail climbs through sun-baked\, fragrant chaparral. \n \nAfter many twists and turns we will reach a ridgetop fire road at Eagle Junction. DESCRIPTION:Natoma Loop Trail is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located in Woodland Hills. During the height of its popularity\, millions took Professor Lowe’s “Railway to the Clouds” to fine hotels and spectacular views of Southern California. Until it was abandoned in the 1930s\, it was the Southland’s most popular tourist attraction. \nDirections to Trailhead \nFrom I-210\, in Pasadena\, exit at Lake Ave. north. Drive 3.6 miles North on Lake Ave. to E Loma Alta Drive; the old stone entrance to the Cobb Estate is located where the two streets meet. DESCRIPTION:I am putting together a full moon hike for Saturday night in Chatsworth’s Deerlake Highlands. Hike will be about 3.5 miles total with about 1000 feet total ascent. You will drive past many parking lots and turnouts. Keep driving until you can see the chain-link fence at end of road \nTake the 101 to Coldwater Canyon Boulevard. Head south to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90 degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Drive just before Coldwater merges into Mulholland Dr.  Road signs read “Road Closed 800 Feet” “Sunset to Sunrise”; this is the park entrance. Do NOT make a U-turn as this will bring you onto Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. For those of you who are familiar with my Goat Peak hike\, this will be a slightly shorter version\, but with the same elevation gain. Two segments\, one 1.5 miles and another 0.5 miles\, will be overgrown and may require some bushwhacking in places. I would like to clear theses segments of low-hanging branches (for the tall people) and other obstacles so bring some small hand garden tools for snipping and/or sawing branches ant twigs.  Its not certain we will need any tools\, just want to be prepared \nWe’ll have a nice long snack break at the Will Rogers State Historic Park Visitor Center \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 6 MILES WITH ABOUT 2\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. Do not park on the private roads. Walk up the road to the chain-link fence.  If you are coming from the 405\, the right turn onto Chautauqua is a little tricky and comes up fast before the left-turn signal.
