SUMMARY:Browns Canyon - Devil Canyon & Deerlake Highlands Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our loop hike begins in the Twin Lakes neighborhood and meanders north through and along Browns Canyon Creek. We’ll eventually head northwest along a network of trails across Deerlake Highlands and descend Echo Canyon connecting our loop with Devil Canyon and back to Browns Canyon. \n🌳There will be several shady segments along the way. Bring 2 Qt of water and some snacks. \nDevil Canyon\, with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment\, makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. Live Oak and Willow trees fill the canyon and sandstone geology of the wildest kind is found. \n📈Hike will be about 7 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nHead for the address posted — its simply a nearby residence. Park anywhere on Candice Pl. There is no parking on Canoga. We will meet under the 118 fwy; trailhead is just on other side.

SUMMARY:Hiking with Mark E: Hike to MASH Site and Century Lake
DESCRIPTION:This relatively easy\, out-and-back hike\, travels alongside Malibu Creek through some great terrain and old growth oak trees\, with a special bonus — a visit to the site of television’s legendary program hit M*A*S*H*. The site still draws visitors from all over the world decades after the show left the air. Now on display are a recreation of the iconic signpost\, and informational panels with photographs from the show. We’ll enjoy a nice snack break here. \nOn the way\, we’ll drop into Century Lake — a secluded area\, where we can enjoy its serenity at a lakeside picnic table. The famous cliff dive seen in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was shot here \nABOUT THE PARK \nMalibu Creek State Park is the is the former location ranch of 20th Century Fox studios who owned the land between 1946 and 1974. Considered the recreational crown jewel of the Santa Monica Mountains\, MCSP has over 8\,000 acres of rolling tallgrass plains\, oak savannahs and dramatic peaks. It’s no wonder many call it “The Yosemite of Southern California” \nHIKE RATING \nAt about 5 miles and 400 feet total ascent\, the hike is rated EASY+ — see the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nParking is $3/hr or $12/day at gate. Free passes are available at your local public library.

SUMMARY:🥾Lower Zuma Canyon Loop - 🏖️🍷Happy Hour at Sunset Restaurant
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is a workout with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \nHike is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \n🍹Post hike shenanigans will take place at The Sunset Restaurant by Zuma Beach at 6800 Westward Beach Rd. Westward Dr. Happy hour is from 3-9 \nSunset 7:43 \nDIRECTIONS\nMeet at the Zuma Canyon Trailhead parking lot at\n5721 Bonsall Dr · Malibu\, CA \nFrom trailhead to restaurant – 1.6 miles. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. On this 6 mile hike I will take you through Franklin Canyon and then a bit off-trail to the “planar” center of Los Angeles. It will make a great photo opp. The first hill will be a workout\, but there is lots of shade on this one. SUMMARY:🏖️🌊Beach Walk/Stairs - Point Dume Preserve - 🍹Happy Hour @ Sunset Restaurant
DESCRIPTION:The headlands\, cliffs\, trails\, and beaches of 63-acre Point Dume State Beach and Point Dume Natural Preserve make an exciting location for a day of exploring. Cliffs provide places for birds to roost. Over 100 types of birds are found here. Watch the sky for brown pelicans\, falcons\, and hawks. Other animals roam the park\, including coyotes\, raccoons\, rabbits\, and skunks. \nWe’ll start at free Zuma Beach and walk to Point Dume Beach where a trail leads up to an ancient coastal bluff sand dune with amazing views. From the summit we can look out to Santa Monica Bay\, along the Malibu coast\, and inland to the Santa Monica Mountains. In the distance Catalina Island is visible on clear days. \n🦈A boardwalk leads to an observation platform. We may spot sea lions\, harbor seals\, and dolphins swimming just offshore. It makes a great place to watch for whales during their annual migration\, anytime from December through March. \nAnother trail traverses off the eastern side of the bluff to a stairway that descends 100 feet to an isolated beach at Dume Cove. Tide pools await us if we can arrive at low tide. We’ll look for sea stars\, mussels\, crabs\, sea urchins anemones\, and perhaps even a shy octopus. \nWe’ll return to Sunset Restaurant via same stairs and along some alternate trails. Happy hour begins at 3pm \n“Hike” is about 3.5 miles with 500 feet total ascent and is rate Easy+ due to 100 foot climb up the gentle stairs. See HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nPark for free on Westward Beach Rd We meet in front of the Sunset Restaurant

SUMMARY:💦Wet & Wild(wood) - 🧺Potluck Picnic
DESCRIPTION:This hike is the perfect summer hike. It will require several stream crossings along the Arroyo Conejo and Wildwood Canyon Creek so wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet (if you don’t like walking on rocks); shorts recommended \nWe’ll visit the Wetlands and have a picnic lunch at shady Skunk Hollow\, a tree-lined area adjacent to a flowing creek with a picnic table. A nice little area. It will be almost all downhill to Skunk Hollow — \n🍴😋Bring some food and drink to share🥂 and your own utensils\, etc. \nWe’ll return to the cars via my secret trail and more stream crossings. Hike will be about 7 miles with 950 ft total ascent (it can be shortened to 5.5 miles and 600′ ascent with two less stream crossings if weather demands it) and rated MEDIUM. See Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS:\nPark and meet under the trailhead tree at the end of Calle Yucca. Please respect the residents’ peace 🤪

SUMMARY:🌅Summer Solstice Hike: Corral/Puerco Canyon Loop-Lunch 🦞 Malibu Seafood - BYOB
DESCRIPTION:The Summer Solstice falls on June 20th at 1:50pm…And what better way to start the summer with a short hike and lunch at Malibu Seafood — HWD’s favorite post-hike lunch venue? \nVideo: https://youtu.be/NJP-m1tCXxM?si=uSPgQmYCYb2QG54C with celebrity spottings \nOur hike will begin at sea level next to Malibu Seafood in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. After a while and an easy creek crossing\, We leave Corral Canyon for my hiking through pristine wilderness along the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. \nWe’ll return to the restaurant via another trail making a loop. Along the way we’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and some mysterious buildings… \n🦞🍷After the hike we’ll have lunch next door at Malibu Seafood Patio & Kitchen. Maybe we’ll spot some dolphins frolicking in the waves\, or some celebrities. \n🍾They let you bring your own beverages including booze. So pack a cooler with your favorite beverage and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch by the ocean and trailhead — you will deserve it! I’ll bring some white wine. \nHike is about 4.5 miles with about 1\,100 ft of total ascent and rated MEDIUM due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nBring sunscreen\, hat\, 2 quarts water\, sturdy shoes and snacks. Clothing optional. \nDIRECTIONS\nDrive to Malibu Seafood at 25653 Pacific Coast Hwy and park on PCH or pay $12.00(?) at Sara Wan trailhead parking lot. Iron ranger accepts credit cards \nTrail statistics are approximate. SUMMARY:E.T. Hike - 🐶s OK
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nWe’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008 with the original HWD ET hike and its become one of our most popular hikes. We’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie\, and will take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. So let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak-and sycamore-shaded canyons and eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights. \n🎥Click or tap here for complete hike description with a special video that juxtaposes our hike with movie scenes \n🍺Post hike lunch is at Islands down the street at 11400 Porter Ranch Dr \nDon’t forget hiking gear for your dog: https://amzn.to/3uk05AP \nHike is about 8.3 miles with about 1\,300 ft total ascent. And is rated MEDIUM. See hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDirections to Trailhead\nHead for the North Valley YMCA on Corbin Ave. Before you get to the entrance (traveling north)\, park on street — you will see the YMCA sign. \nImportant \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. SUMMARY:Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
The first 1.5 miles is slightly strenuous with an 800 ft gain. \nDIRECTIONS\nMeet at the Zuma Canyon Trailhead parking lot at\n5721 Bonsall Dr · Malibu\, CA \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. SUMMARY:Mission Point The Hard Way
DESCRIPTION:See the hike report from last year’s trip: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/mission-point-the-hard-way \nO’Melveny Park spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nNormally our hike to the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point uses the steep Grotto Trail or my alternate no-name one u. Our return would use the Bee Canyon trail \nHowever\, this time we will explore some of those little used and overgrown trails we have seen crisscrossing our other paths. Instead of returning via Bee Canyon\, we’ll use the Pipleline Trail (an alternate to Neon Way) \nTrekking poles recommended for this one: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \nHike is about 5 miles with 1800 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide \nHistorical Note \nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \nDirections \nHead for O’Melveny Park using the map pin and Google Maps. The parking lot is small and fills up quickly. Plan on parking on neighboring streets. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated.\nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers.
