SUMMARY:HWD Ranch - Mormon Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Original! \nThe world-famous HWD Ranch is located within the stunning Hidden Creeks parkland near the confluence of Browns Creek and Mormon Creek. The parkland provides a key migration corridor and perennial water source to a full complement of large mammals including black bear\, mountain lion\, mule deer\, bobcat\, American badger\, grey fox\, long-tailed weasel\, ring-tailed cat\, and the endangered California Condor. \nNature won’t be the only thing we’ll experience. We may get a chance to meet Ferdinand\, a bull that roams the area and a couple of wild horses. There are lots of old artifacts to explore along the way\, including old ranch houses\, abandoned ranch vehicles\, a dam and much more! So expect a lot of stops along the way. \nHIKE IS 6 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS:\nSee detailed instructions here \nHead toward the address given. You are going to park in a turnout on Brown’s Canyon Rd on either side of driveway to old Misty Hollow Ranch – now owned by MRCA \nThere is an old for-sale sign post. You can park in turnout immediately before or immediately after that. We’ll meet in the driveway by that signpost

SUMMARY:🏈 10th Annual Pre-Game Hike: Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads
DESCRIPTION:Amazon Top 10 for Cheap Hikers \nI almost forgot 🤪 \nOur 10th Annual Super Bowl Pre-Game Hike is perfect. Short enough to get you home on time and prepare for parties and kickoff\, yet big on beauty and adventure. You may even have time to get to New Orleans. ✈️ \nOur destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \n🗻Calabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. We’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail. \n(Optional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures) \n👉Hike is 4.7 miles with about 1\,200 feet total gain and rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nWe’ll have our snack break at a hidden cistern. Don’t drink the water 😆 \nDirections\nThe trail head is located on Mulholland Hwy less than a fifth of a mile west of Dry Canyon Cold Creek Road. See my interactive map \nCoordinates: 34.12666\, -118.65748 \nFrom the 101 freeway in Agoura/Calabasas\, head South on Las Virgenes Road to Mulholland Hwy. Turn Left on Mulholland and continue 5.7 miles to a small parking area on the right. or…. \nFrom 101 Ventura Fwy in the Vally: take Valley Circle/Mulholland Dr exit south\, turn right on Valmar Rd (becomes Old Topanga Cyn Rd) then right on Mulholland Hwy 2.1 miles to the parking area on the left. \nFrom PCH take Topanga Canyon and turn left up Old Topanga. Take a left at Mulholland Hwy for a couple miles and then turn left onto turnout. If you are coming up Malibu Canyon take a right at Mulholland for 5.7 miles \nPark off-pavement. There is overflow parking 500′ south (“west”) across the street next to the house. \nImportant \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Caballero Canyon - Gizmo Peak Loop
DESCRIPTION:Topanga State Park remains closed but I will take you about as close as you can get by tracing the northern boundary with perhaps a view of some of the fire damage. \nSo\, join us for a short but heart-pounding hike through the old stomping grounds of Edgar Rice Burroughs in Caballero Canyon. We’ll take the HWD Ridge Trail to Mulholland\, head up for a snack on Gizmo Peak\, and return to car via the HWD Caba trail \nHike is about 4 miles with over 1\,000′ total ascent and is rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nMeet at the Caballero Canyon trailhead on Reseda Bl. From the 101 Freeway\, exit at Reseda Blvd and turn south. Drive for about two miles. There is parking on both sides of the street; the trailhead is on the left across the street from Braemar Country club \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:First Day Hike 2025
DESCRIPTION:California State Parks has asked me to lead a hike for their annual First Day Hikes. So join us for a picturesque loop hike into movie & TV history in the heart of Malibu Creek State Park. \nOur first stop is Ronald Reagan’s Yearling Row Ranch\, now part of MCSP. During the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” We will be hiking on trails that Reagan himself built. \nOur next stop will be Century Lake\, the location of the cliff-diving scene from the movie Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and many other movies and TV shows. We’ll take a snack break there before heading into the site of Ape City\, depicted in the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes. \nAfter some monkeying around we’ll head back to the ranch passing Reagan’s pit BBQ where he entertained his Hollywood friends. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide – \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mullholland Hwy \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. SUMMARY:Falls Creek - HWD Loop & Break at the HWD Ranch West
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, a sinkhole on Iverson Rd prevented us from doing this hike. Let’s try again! \nWe begin in the prestigious gated neighborhood of the Indian Springs Estates in Chatsworth. From there we head north and enter Indian Springs Open Space\, set within the backdrop of surrounding open and untouched mountains\, ravines and hillsides. \nAfter a little more trekking we will find ourselves in Rocky Peak Park. This extraordinary property forms the most critical wildlife habitat linkage between the Simi Hills and the Santa Susana Mountains. Spectacular sandstone boulders\, outcroppings\, oak savannahs\, and perennial water sources provide a diverse habitat for birds\, mammals\, and reptiles. \nWe’ll be taking our snack break atop a hill at the HWD Ranch West surrounded by old farm\, ranching equipment (see featured photo) and commanding views. \nHISTORICAL NOTES\nDuring our hike we’ll be passing by land that was once the homesteaded property (Fern Ann Falls) of the first American family to settle in the San Fernando Valley: Neils and Ann Johnson. They moved to the property in 1874 and homestead papers were filed in 1899. \nAlmost 20 years ago while exploring the homesteaded area I came across some of the “trails” we’ll be using. Back then they were just overgrown paths left over by human activity during a bygone era. My old “secret trails” are now established LA County trails; hikers\, bikers and equestrians are permitted through the estate gates. \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1\,600 feet total ascent and rated MEDIUM+. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nFrom the Santa Susana Pass Rd — between Rocky Peak Rd and Topanga Canyon Blvd — turn north on Iverson Rd. Head toward the address given and proceed toward the 118 Fwy overpass and park on street outside of gates. We meet just outside the gates. \nIMPORTANT\nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.\nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:🥾Chatsworth Adventure Hike
DESCRIPTION:On this serendipitous hike we will rediscover some old trails I haven’t used in a few years — and others haven’t used in about 10 years — as we blaze a path around an ongoing housing development. \nLight bushwhacking may be required. We’ll also be doing some creeking putting our poison oak avoidance skills to the test. See https://amzn.to/40OVuuv \nDue to the nature of this hike I cannot be precise on the stats. It will be about 6-8 miles with about 1\,000 feet total ascent. I am rating it DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide. Wear long pants. \nDIRECTIONS\nPark in the dirt lot on the corner of Poema Pl and Topanga Cyn Bl. Enter lot from Poema. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. SUMMARY:🌃👻Halloween Hike - The Ghosts of Scary Dairy 😱(EZ Night Version)
DESCRIPTION:Spooky Night version! This hike is rated “CREEPY” due to past murders and mayhem. Dangers along the way include ghosts and phantoms. Scroll down for the ghost stories. Here is the origin story: \nOn October 12th\, 1936\, the Camarillo State Mental Hospital opened its doors taking in the sick and mentally ill. Not just a single building\, but an entire campus of buildings\, the hospital was very successful and by 1957 had grown to over 7000 patients! \nIn addition to electroshock therapy and lobotomies was the establishment of a 🐮dairy nearby the hospital. Patients that were able participated in working at this dairy\, taking care of the animals\, and growing vegetables. The food produced from the therapy programs at this dairy went directly to feeding the inmates and staff at the hospital. \n😨Patients were forced to slaughter animals in the dairy. Some say murders happened there. In some stories it’s patients murdering people and in others it’s staff murdering patients \nIn the 1960s the hospital closed the dairy\, simply abandoning the buildings. By 1997\, the hospital also closed\, and was left slowly falling apart. Many of the structures are heavily graffitied still clearly recognizable. \n👻Ghostly Encounters\nNumerous phantoms have been seen around or in the bell tower. There is the ghost of a man who appears in the stalls of one of the women’s restrooms\, you can see his legs\, only to disappear when you open the door. A woman around the bell tower asks for directions to the chapel before disappearing. In some of the abandoned buildings\, students have reported running into a woman in a hospital gown who silently screams at them before vanishing. A ghostly janitor haunts the school; the sound of his phantom keys jingling alerting those to his presence. The bus stop near the bell tower is also haunted by a ghost. And with all these ghosts so far\, it comes as no surprise that there’s a woman in white. 👩‍⚕️She is assumed to be a nurse who roams the bell tower’s hallways only to disappear when approached. \nHike is a 2.5 mile loop with 180′ total ascent and rated EASY See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nTake Lewis Road south to Camarillo Street and turn left (east). Cross the bridge over Calleguas Creek and the entrance is on the left. Parking is $6 per vehicle (as of 2023)

SUMMARY:🏫A Back to School Hike to the CLU Rocks
DESCRIPTION:The “CLU” rocks are located on Mount Clef Ridge overlooking the Cal Lutheran University campus. They have been a fixture of CLU’s landscape since its second academic year (1962). Every year\, in one of Cal Lutheran’s longest-standing traditions\, freshman and transfer students paint the rocks. \nTo get there we’ll be taking a “slightly” 😜more difficult route than the students use: From Wildwood Park via the Santa Rosa Trail. We will return via the Lower Butte Trail. Along the way there will be breathtaking views of Santa Rosa Valley\, Thousand Oaks\, and the CLU campus. \nHike is about 7.6 miles with 1\,300 ft total ascent and rated MEDIUM+ See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nNote that “CLU” is misspelled. It should read “HWD” 😆 \nDIRECTIONS\nMeet in the east parking lot on Canna st (not the tennis courts) \nTake either Lynn Rd or the 23 to Avenida de los Arboles. Turn west and drive (0.6 miles from Lynn Rd) to the Wildflower Playfield. Turn right on Canna St then left into parking lot\, or park on street.

SUMMARY:🚒Firehouse Hill - Cheeseboro Canyon - Morrison Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our hike begins at Las Virgenes Highlands Park. A steep trail up Firehouse Hill will take us to peaks that offer panoramic views towards the Santa Monica Mountains\, Agoura Hills\, Calabasas\, Simi Hills and beyond. We’ll take a break atop Mount Basura. \nAftere our break\, we’ll descend into Cheeseboro Canyon via the Canyon View Trail and make a small loop around the southern end of the canyon\, around the Modelo and Fran Pawley Meadow trails. We return to the bottom of Firehouse Hill via the Morrison Ranch Trail\, traversing oak savannas and a nice walnut woodland. \nHike is about 7 miles with 1\,500 feet total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain — see the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nHistorical Note\nLV Highlands Park was previously owned by realtor Fred Sands\, and before that Bob Hope. It was acquired by MRCA for $6.25 million in 2010. Us locals have always called it Firehouse Hill \nDirections\nThe park is located on Las Virgenes Road\, just south of Mureau Road and north of Highway 101 in Calabasas. From the 101 go north on Las Virgenes Rd. You will need to drive past the trailhead — on the left — and make a U-turn at Thousand Oaks Blvd. Park in the lot next to fire station.

SUMMARY:Browns Canyon - Devil Canyon & Deerlake Highlands Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our loop hike begins in the Twin Lakes neighborhood and meanders north through and along Browns Canyon Creek. We’ll eventually head northwest along a network of trails across Deerlake Highlands and descend Echo Canyon connecting our loop with Devil Canyon and back to Browns Canyon. \n🌳There will be several shady segments along the way. Bring 2 Qt of water and some snacks. \nDevil Canyon\, with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment\, makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. Live Oak and Willow trees fill the canyon and sandstone geology of the wildest kind is found. \n📈Hike will be about 7 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nHead for the address posted — its simply a nearby residence. Park anywhere on Candice Pl. There is no parking on Canoga. We will meet under the 118 fwy; trailhead is just on other side.
