SUMMARY:🚶‍♂️‍➡️Easy Hike: The New Paramount Ranch
DESCRIPTION:A new old west is rising! Let’s check out the rebuilding progress of the famous Old Western Town at Paramount Ranch with this easy hike. \n📽️As many of you know\, until the Woolsey fire\, this was the filming site of hundreds of movies and TV shows since 1927. The Woolsey Fire destroyed the original Western Town buildings. Only two structures survived: a white chapel built for “Westworld” and a train depot built for “Dr. Quinn\, Medicine Woman.” \n🏎️The ranch site also was also the home of a world class race track in the late 50s. \nThe National Park Service is building a new Paramount Ranch set to house four buildings on the footprint of the historic structures\, and all will be built with an eye toward wildfire safety. Plans for the new structures include a prop shed\, barn\, restrooms and a large pavilion\, which all could be used for events and as “the backbone for future filming.” The chapel and depot will remain in place. \nLet’s check out the progress! \n👉Hike will be about 4 miles with 400′ of total ascent and rated EASY. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide. Depending on group\, we can easily add more elevation. \nGetting There\nIn order to respect the NPS parking limits we will be parking and meeting at the old Reagan Ranch in Malibu Creek State Park and hiking into Paramount Ranch. See Google map.

SUMMARY:Mini Bulldog Loop - MASH Site - Lost Cabin Trail
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a hike in Malibu Creek State Park the other groups don’t do. Our old destination\, the stone house\, is gone but this moderately strenuous 7-miler is still a great diversion from the usual MCSP treks. \nWe’ll start at the western end of Crags Rd near Malibou Lake and head on up to Lakeside Lateral and the Bulldog Mtwy via Maqueketa Terrace. We’ll loop the lateral and from there we descend down along the Bulldog Lateral. Bulldog is a fire road/powerline access road that descends crookedly along slopes thickly clothed in chaparral and will provide rewarding views of Goat Buttes. \nNear the bottom we’ll come across a dry creek bed then take Crags Rd to the MASH site. After paying homage to Hawkeye\, we’ll visit the Lost Cabin site. The trail to the site probably has the most beautiful surroundings in the park with the red sandstone Goat Buttes to the north and green\, rugged mountains to the south. It is very secluded with few travelers. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 6.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,400 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections \nWe will meet on the corner of Seminole Dr and Crags Dr in the Malibou Lake neighborhood. Point your GPS to 1912 Seminole Rd and park on street — off the asphalt — close to the corner.

SUMMARY:Hill Canyon to Elliott Mountain and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook Group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nThe trail up Elliot Mountain was built May 2015. The mountain\, a bench and the trail are named after Burt Elliot who was very active with Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Burt died of cancer in the Spring of 2014. He was the go-to guy for all things Conejo Open Space. \n👉https://youtu.be/MsTPZO3mz84 video \nWe began exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “The Weekday Hikers.”. At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. From 2008 to 2011 Hill Canyon was the location of our unofficial club house. \nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting the use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nHike is appx 9 miles with appx 1500 ft total ascent and rated MEDIUM+. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nBring 2 Qt water\, lugsoles\, snacks\, sunscreen\, hat \nDIRECTIONS\nFree park in dirt lot next to TO Household Hazardous Waste Facility \n“If you’re early\, you’re on time. If you’re on time\, you’re late. If you’re late…don’t bother showing up” \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the HWD ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER – and https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/pages/322667/Liability_Waiver/

SUMMARY:Moores Canyon - Upper Las Virgenes - Kenneth Fire Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Part of this loop hike will be through the Kenneth Fire burn area. \nToday we’ll be trapsing around the northern section of the Upper Las Virgenes Open Space Preserve in the Simi Hills. At the western edge of the San Fernando Valley\, it is part of a critical ecological linkage and wildlife corridor between the Santa Monica Mountains and the ranges to the north. Diverse habitats and endangered species such as the California red-legged frog\, the San Fernando Valley spineflower\, and the Southwestern willow flycatcher are permanently protected here. \nOur hike begins at the mouth of Moores Canyon (aka El Escorpion Park)\, the location of historic ranches\, a cave used by the Chumash and Kas’elew (Castle Peak). For most people\, At the western end of Moores Canyon we’ll use a little-know trail that will get us into ULV Open Space. \nNote: There are a couple sections that I have not been on since before the Woolsey Fire\, and back then they were not well maintained. So buckle up\, buttercup. \nHike will be about 6 miles with about 1\,000 feet total ascent. Hike is rated MEDIUM+ due to possible bushwhacking. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections: \nGo to the west end of Vanowen St and park on street \nFrom the 101 freeway exit Valley Circle Boulevard. Head north to Vanowen St. Turn left. Park on street near the end of Vanowen (at the bend) \nFrom the 118\, exit Topanga Canyon\, go south\, turn right on Vanowen

SUMMARY:HWD Ranch - Mormon Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Original! \nThe world-famous HWD Ranch is located within the stunning Hidden Creeks parkland near the confluence of Browns Creek and Mormon Creek. The parkland provides a key migration corridor and perennial water source to a full complement of large mammals including black bear\, mountain lion\, mule deer\, bobcat\, American badger\, grey fox\, long-tailed weasel\, ring-tailed cat\, and the endangered California Condor. \nNature won’t be the only thing we’ll experience. We may get a chance to meet Ferdinand\, a bull that roams the area and a couple of wild horses. There are lots of old artifacts to explore along the way\, including old ranch houses\, abandoned ranch vehicles\, a dam and much more! So expect a lot of stops along the way. \nHIKE IS 6 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS:\nSee detailed instructions here \nHead toward the address given. You are going to park in a turnout on Brown’s Canyon Rd on either side of driveway to old Misty Hollow Ranch – now owned by MRCA \nThere is an old for-sale sign post. SUMMARY:🏈 10th Annual Pre-Game Hike: Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads
DESCRIPTION:Amazon Top 10 for Cheap Hikers \nI almost forgot 🤪 \nOur 10th Annual Super Bowl Pre-Game Hike is perfect. Short enough to get you home on time and prepare for parties and kickoff\, yet big on beauty and adventure. You may even have time to get to New Orleans. ✈️ \nOur destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \n🗻Calabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. We’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail. \n(Optional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures) \n👉Hike is 4.7 miles with about 1\,200 feet total gain and rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nWe’ll have our snack break at a hidden cistern. Don’t drink the water 😆 \nDirections\nThe trail head is located on Mulholland Hwy less than a fifth of a mile west of Dry Canyon Cold Creek Road. See my interactive map \nCoordinates: 34.12666\, -118.65748 \nFrom the 101 freeway in Agoura/Calabasas\, head South on Las Virgenes Road to Mulholland Hwy. Turn Left on Mulholland and continue 5.7 miles to a small parking area on the right. or…. \nFrom 101 Ventura Fwy in the Vally: take Valley Circle/Mulholland Dr exit south\, turn right on Valmar Rd (becomes Old Topanga Cyn Rd) then right on Mulholland Hwy 2.1 miles to the parking area on the left. \nFrom PCH take Topanga Canyon and turn left up Old Topanga. Take a left at Mulholland Hwy for a couple miles and then turn left onto turnout. If you are coming up Malibu Canyon take a right at Mulholland for 5.7 miles \nPark off-pavement. There is overflow parking 500′ south (“west”) across the street next to the house. \nImportant \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Caballero Canyon - Gizmo Peak Loop
DESCRIPTION:Topanga State Park remains closed but I will take you about as close as you can get by tracing the northern boundary with perhaps a view of some of the fire damage. \nSo\, join us for a short but heart-pounding hike through the old stomping grounds of Edgar Rice Burroughs in Caballero Canyon. We’ll take the HWD Ridge Trail to Mulholland\, head up for a snack on Gizmo Peak\, and return to car via the HWD Caba trail \nHike is about 4 miles with over 1\,000′ total ascent and is rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nMeet at the Caballero Canyon trailhead on Reseda Bl. From the 101 Freeway\, exit at Reseda Blvd and turn south. Drive for about two miles. SUMMARY:First Day Hike 2025
DESCRIPTION:California State Parks has asked me to lead a hike for their annual First Day Hikes. So join us for a picturesque loop hike into movie & TV history in the heart of Malibu Creek State Park. \nOur first stop is Ronald Reagan’s Yearling Row Ranch\, now part of MCSP. During the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” We will be hiking on trails that Reagan himself built. \nOur next stop will be Century Lake\, the location of the cliff-diving scene from the movie Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and many other movies and TV shows. We’ll take a snack break there before heading into the site of Ape City\, depicted in the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes. \nAfter some monkeying around we’ll head back to the ranch passing Reagan’s pit BBQ where he entertained his Hollywood friends. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide – \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mullholland Hwy \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER – https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/pages/322667/Liability_Waiver/

SUMMARY:Falls Creek - HWD Loop & Break at the HWD Ranch West
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, a sinkhole on Iverson Rd prevented us from doing this hike. Let’s try again! \nWe begin in the prestigious gated neighborhood of the Indian Springs Estates in Chatsworth. From there we head north and enter Indian Springs Open Space\, set within the backdrop of surrounding open and untouched mountains\, ravines and hillsides. \nAfter a little more trekking we will find ourselves in Rocky Peak Park. This extraordinary property forms the most critical wildlife habitat linkage between the Simi Hills and the Santa Susana Mountains. Spectacular sandstone boulders\, outcroppings\, oak savannahs\, and perennial water sources provide a diverse habitat for birds\, mammals\, and reptiles. \nWe’ll be taking our snack break atop a hill at the HWD Ranch West surrounded by old farm\, ranching equipment (see featured photo) and commanding views. \nHISTORICAL NOTES\nDuring our hike we’ll be passing by land that was once the homesteaded property (Fern Ann Falls) of the first American family to settle in the San Fernando Valley: Neils and Ann Johnson. They moved to the property in 1874 and homestead papers were filed in 1899. \nAlmost 20 years ago while exploring the homesteaded area I came across some of the “trails” we’ll be using. Back then they were just overgrown paths left over by human activity during a bygone era. My old “secret trails” are now established LA County trails; hikers\, bikers and equestrians are permitted through the estate gates. \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1\,600 feet total ascent and rated MEDIUM+. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nFrom the Santa Susana Pass Rd — between Rocky Peak Rd and Topanga Canyon Blvd — turn north on Iverson Rd. Head toward the address given and proceed toward the 118 Fwy overpass and park on street outside of gates. We meet just outside the gates. \nIMPORTANT\nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.\nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:🥾Chatsworth Adventure Hike
DESCRIPTION:On this serendipitous hike we will rediscover some old trails I haven’t used in a few years — and others haven’t used in about 10 years — as we blaze a path around an ongoing housing development. \nLight bushwhacking may be required. We’ll also be doing some creeking putting our poison oak avoidance skills to the test. See https://amzn.to/40OVuuv \nDue to the nature of this hike I cannot be precise on the stats. It will be about 6-8 miles with about 1\,000 feet total ascent. I am rating it DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide. Wear long pants. \nDIRECTIONS\nPark in the dirt lot on the corner of Poema Pl and Topanga Cyn Bl. Enter lot from Poema. \nTrail statistics are approximate. SUMMARY:🌃👻Halloween Hike - The Ghosts of Scary Dairy 😱(EZ Night Version)
DESCRIPTION:Spooky Night version! This hike is rated “CREEPY” due to past murders and mayhem. Dangers along the way include ghosts and phantoms. Scroll down for the ghost stories. Here is the origin story: \nOn October 12th\, 1936\, the Camarillo State Mental Hospital opened its doors taking in the sick and mentally ill. Not just a single building\, but an entire campus of buildings\, the hospital was very successful and by 1957 had grown to over 7000 patients! \nIn addition to electroshock therapy and lobotomies was the establishment of a 🐮dairy nearby the hospital. Patients that were able participated in working at this dairy\, taking care of the animals\, and growing vegetables. The food produced from the therapy programs at this dairy went directly to feeding the inmates and staff at the hospital. \n😨Patients were forced to slaughter animals in the dairy. Some say murders happened there. In some stories it’s patients murdering people and in others it’s staff murdering patients \nIn the 1960s the hospital closed the dairy\, simply abandoning the buildings. By 1997\, the hospital also closed\, and was left slowly falling apart. Many of the structures are heavily graffitied still clearly recognizable. \n👻Ghostly Encounters\nNumerous phantoms have been seen around or in the bell tower. There is the ghost of a man who appears in the stalls of one of the women’s restrooms\, you can see his legs\, only to disappear when you open the door. A woman around the bell tower asks for directions to the chapel before disappearing. In some of the abandoned buildings\, students have reported running into a woman in a hospital gown who silently screams at them before vanishing. A ghostly janitor haunts the school; the sound of his phantom keys jingling alerting those to his presence. The bus stop near the bell tower is also haunted by a ghost. And with all these ghosts so far\, it comes as no surprise that there’s a woman in white. 👩‍⚕️She is assumed to be a nurse who roams the bell tower’s hallways only to disappear when approached. \nHike is a 2.5 mile loop with 180′ total ascent and rated EASY See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nTake Lewis Road south to Camarillo Street and turn left (east). Cross the bridge over Calleguas Creek and the entrance is on the left. Parking is $6 per vehicle (as of 2023)

DESCRIPTION:This hike is rated “CREEPY” due to past murders and mayhem. \nHike is 3.7 miles with 775′ total ascent and rated EASY+ See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nTake Lewis Road south to Camarillo Street and turn left (east). Cross the bridge over Calleguas Creek and the entrance is on the left. Parking is $6 per vehicle (as of 2023)
