SUMMARY:🦇13th Annual Chatsworth Halloween Hike ☠ Night Version 👻
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We’ve been doing this one in Chatsworth/Twin Lakes since 2009. It’s the scariest hike this side of Transylvania! \nThe decorations are a little worn and I don’t know if the solar lights are still working\, but it will be a fun hike. There is a nice spot where we can share some drinks and small bites — so bring the “good stuff” \nAnd remember NO WHITE LIGHTS – red or green only. There is still time to order one of these headlamps – one uses batteries\, the other is rechargeable. Both are red/green/white. \n[asa2_collection show_prime=”no” title_length=”50″ savings_text_style=”long” max_width=”2000″ max_row_items=”3″ tpl=” Flex_1″ width=”50%”]1[/asa2_collection] \nCostumes are optional: https://amzn.to/2n5iZyX \nHere are some photos from last year: \nhttps://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/03115251/Halloween.mp4\n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM DUE. SUMMARY:VIP Hike - The Forgotten Trails Series
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Scroll Down to RSVP” style=”custom” custom_background=”#ffffff” custom_text=”#1c9ec5″ shape=”square” link=”url:%23rsvp”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nDetails\nI call this one “The Lost Trails of Los Liones”\nOne day in 2013\, while bushwhacking around Los Liones Canyon\, I found some side trails. After some research I came to the conclusion that these trails were used before the current Los Liones Canyon Trail was built\, i.e.\, it was was the old Los Liones trail! It immediately became a VIP hike \nWe’ll take the old trail up the canyon and climb our way to the East Topanga Fireroad. The “no fireroad rule” will be in effect and we will use the paralleling single tracks that will take us to “Wirebreak Peak” (for lack of a better name). There may be steep and/or loose sections here. If you’ve done the Wirebreak trail with us you probably know the peak I am referring to. We’ll return along with the unwashed masses down the “new” Los Liones book trail \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 4.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nNote: The last time I took the group was 2019 and a small section became so impassable we had to change the hike. Since then Katja\, Andi and I cleared the trail and made it passable in 2020\, but haven’t been back since. There will undoubtably be some bushwhacking\, but I don’t expect any large branches blocking our way. Bring some hand tools (optional) for additional grooming along the way. \n\nDirections:\nWe’ll meet at the Los Liones Trail Head at the end of Los Liones Dr\nThere are a couple of  parking lots on the right\, however I expect them to be full. SUMMARY:Coquina Mine Loop
DESCRIPTION:This loop will include a shortcut to the Coquina Mine in Las Llajas Canyon. It was formerly a VIP hike\, however the shortcut has been getting a lot of use in recent years and I am opening the hike to entire group. \nWe’ll start behind a dam and along some lesser known trails above Chivo Canyon. We return via the canyon trail. Highlights along the way: \n\nPower shovel and other artifacts from a 1929-1935 limestone strip mining operation\nFossils\nTar pits\nRanching remnants\n\nHike is about 7 miles with appx 1\,600′ total ascent is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nFrom the 118 take Yosemite Dr north toward the hills for 1.6 miles. As you round the bend you will pass the trailhead and the name of the street changes to Cottonwood Dr. Make a right on Westwood St and park at corner. We meet on the corner at 9am \nImportant\nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated.\nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Afernoon Delight: Musch Loop to Eagle Rock
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be doing the Eagle Rock — Musch Loop in a counter-clockwise direction. \nWe’ll start outside of Trippet Ranch on a neighborhood trail connecting us to the East Topanga Fireroad. As we head up a grassy ridge and connect with Eagle Springs Fire Road expansive views of the Santa Monica Mountains\, Santa Ynez Canyon and a slice of the Pacific Ocean will begin to emerge. \nSoon the looming Eagle Rock comes into view. \nEagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park\, will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will eat\, drink and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \nBring snacks and/or booze to share \nHike is rated MEDIUM. For a detailed description see our previpous hike here https://www.hikingwithdean.com/event/musch-loop-to-eagle-rock-2022/ \nDIRECTIONS \nWe’ll meet in Trippet Rach by the main kiosk near the bathrooms \nFrom Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, turn east on Entrada Road; that’s to the left if you are coming from the San Fernando Valley. Follow Entrada Road by turning left at every opportunity until you arrive at Topanga State Park. \nPark on street before the last left turn (and walk a couple blocks) or pay the ranger in the park ($12?). If you park on street be sure that your left wheels are inside the white line. Note parking restrictions.

SUMMARY:New Year's Hike: Mini Bulldog Loop - MASH Site - Lost Cabin Trail
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a hike in Malibu Creek State Park the other groups don’t do. Our old destination\, the stone house\, is gone but this moderately strenuous 7-miler is still a great diversion from the usual MCSP treks. \nWe’ll start at the western end of Crags Rd near Malibou Lake and head on up to Lakeside Lateral and the Bulldog Mtwy via Maqueketa Terrace. We’ll loop the lateral and from there we descend down along the Bulldog Lateral. Bulldog is a fire road/powerline access road that descends crookedly along slopes thickly clothed in chaparral and will provide rewarding views of Goat Buttes. \nNear the bottom we’ll come across a dry creek bed then take Crags Rd to the MASH site. After paying homage to Hawkeye\, we’ll visit the Lost Cabin site. The trail to the site probably has the most beautiful surroundings in the park with the red sandstone Goat Buttes to the north and green\, rugged mountains to the south. It is very secluded with few travelers. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections \nWe’ll meet in the Malibou Lake Neighborhood on the corner of Crags Dr and Lookout Dr. Park on neighboring streets such as Lookout Dr\, Seminole Dr or Olivera Dr.

SUMMARY:Adventure Hike: Upper Zuma Falls
DESCRIPTION:I normally reserve this hike for the HWD VIPs\, but this month I am inviting all HWD members. VIPs are members that have made a donation or assisted with trail work. For more info see https://www.hikingwithdean.com/vip-circle/ \nWe will begin by hiking northwest on the Backbone Trail to Upper Zuma Canyon. Our first stop will be Newton Canyon Falls\, a beautiful waterfall in a lush\, forested grotto with moss-covered rocks. \nNewton Falls is just the appetizer. Our main course will be Upper Zuma Falls. While on the main trail it can be seen from the distance. However\, back in 2010\, we did an exploratory hike and found a path to the base of the falls. Although we will be hiking off the main trail to get to the falls\, the way has become popular and is now relatively clear of obstacles. \nAfter visiting the falls\, we’ll return to the trail and continue to Zuma-Trancas Ridge\, turn north\, and take my (still) secret trail I found in 2011 to to the top of the falls. We’ll take a snack break by the pool at the top of the falls. \nBring the usual stuff\, but most importantly\, bring a sense of adventure! Wear long pants. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,350 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections\nNote: Parking is limited. Please use use Kanan Park and Ride for carpooling: 29166 Roadside Dr\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301 \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.

SUMMARY:Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads - A Lollipop Hike
DESCRIPTION:Our destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \nCalabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail (aka Secret Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. \nWe’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail \nOptional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. SUMMARY:Hail To The Trail: Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:An HWD Classic! \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/1/3/6/600_331189462.jpeg \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/4/6/a/600_331190282.jpeg \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake and the MASH site. \nHike will be about 6.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide – https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-ratings/ \nPost Hike shenanigans at Island Restaurant on the northwest corner of Kanan and Agoura Rds \nThis hike is sponsored by Amazon – https://amzn.to/2GnCP0a \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mullholland Hwy \nInteractive Map with post-hike lunch: https://goo.gl/UEFVF3 \nParking: \nIn addition to the parking lot there is parking on both sides of Lake Vista Dr. If you are parking in the lot\, please park efficiently as show in this photo: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/28595772/ \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. SUMMARY:Zuma Canyon - Big Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and\, unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons\, has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nWe’ll start at Lower Zuma Canyon and take the Zuma Loop trail west to the Zuma Ridge trail. The views improve as the trail climbs\, and there are several great lookouts of Zuma Beach\, Point Dume\, and the ocean beyond. Turning north and climbing further will provide views of Trancas Canyon and Upper Zuma Canyon. \nAfter a brief rest to catch our breath and take in the views\, we turn east and descend a lush trail into Zuma Canyon proper. Here we will enjoy a snack break beside the shady Zuma Creek before hiking up the opposite ridge. We continue on this ridge for while then turn south on the Zuma Canyon Connection trail\, take this to Ocean View Trail and descend to the Bonsall Trailhead and back to our starting point. \n🌄The hike will be about 11 miles with a total ascent of about 2900 ft. 1700 of that is in the first 3 miles. Later there is a 1000 foot gain between mile 5.5 and mile 7.5. Hike is rated DIFFICULT. See the Hike Rating Guide \nBring at least 2 qt water\, snacks\, hat\, sunscreen\, camera. \n🚗Carpooling is highly recommended. There is a convenient park-and-ride by Kanan & 101 \n👉All hikers must stay on established trails. Practice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints \nDirections to trail head: \nWe will be starting the hike promptly at 9:00am. If you want to start at 9:00 am with us plan your trip so that you arrive at least 20 minutes early. \nTake 101 and exit Kanan Rd. Head south toward beaches and turn right on PCH. After about 1/4 mile turn right on Bonsall Dr. Proceed 1 mile up Bonsall until it ends and continue into dirt parking lot. \n👉Important \nTrail statistics are approximate and based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nFor safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Upper Las Virgenes - Mt. Basura - Cheeseboro Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our hike will consist of traveling along the Dean’s Cut trail connecting the underbelly of Las Virgenes and Cheseboro Canyons. The star of this hike is Mt Basura\, known for its year-round snow-less skiing. We’ll take or break here. \nNote: this hike was a VIP hike. Now my overgrown secret trail is wide open and named “Dean’s Cut.” \nCheeseboro Canyon is located in the northernmost section of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. It is from these hills that water in the canyons flow to the Pacific. The Chumash Indians lived in these canyons for thousands of years. Many trails within the canyons were original Chumash trails before they were expanded by cattle ranchers. In this large expanse of habitat\, deer\, bobcats\, coyotes and rabbits roam. \nToday\, a great diversity of plants and animals live in the canyons. Wide-spread oaks and outcrops of sedimentary rock provide excellent nesting sites for owls\, hawks and other raptors. The abundance of raptors indicates a large prey population\, especially small mammals and reptiles. In more rugged areas where cattle didn’t graze\, we can still find a variety of native plant communities\, including chaparral\, coastal sage scrub and riparian woodlands. \nA couple of unique facts regarding these canyons: \n• Cheeseboro Canyon has the largest concentrations of birds of prey nesting areas in the U.S. outside of Alaska. \n• The Valley Oak tree\, the largest oak native to the United States and possibly the world\, live in these canyons in what might be the largest southerly stand of trees left. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 8 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,400 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nPost Hike Lunch \nLa Paz Restaurant\n4505 Las Virgenes Rd.\nCalabasas\, CA 91302 \nDirections to Trailhead \nTo get to trailhead take 101 and exit Las Virgenes Rd. Turn north (away from beach) to end of road. If you are coming up from PCH\, drive up Malibu Canyon to the end (Malibu Cyn changes its name to Las Virgenes Rd). Park on the street.

SUMMARY:The Pentachaeta Loop
DESCRIPTION:This one is another HWD original! I put this one together back in 2009 after exploring some Westlake Village use trails. With the combination of use trails\, some minor rock scrambling and views of two local lakes\, the result is probably the best hike in Westlake Village. \nThe Pentachaeta Trail\, the main feature of Triunfo Creek Park\, is named after the Pentachaeta lyonii\, a federally-listed endangered flower found in the park. The yellow\, daisy-like flower is found only in Southern California\, and blooms between April and June. \nWe will join each end of the Pentachaeta Trail with the ridgeline that divides Triunfo and Lobo Canyons to make a 5.5-mile loop. Along the way we will have views of the Las Virgenes Reservoir and Westlake Reservoir. We may do some peakbagging too! There is a total ascent of about 1\,400 ft with 700′ of it in the first 1.5 miles\, some of it rocky. A trekking pole (for a couple of downhill sections) and sturdy hiking boots recommended. \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 Freeway exit Lindero Canyon Rd and turn south. At the end of Lindero\, turn left onto Triunfo Canyon Rd. Park on street. Trailhead is on the right\, across from entrance to Oak Forest Mobile Home Park. \nImportant \nTrail statistics are approximate. SUMMARY:Mission Point The Hard Way
DESCRIPTION:O’Melveny Park spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nNormally our hike to the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point uses the steep Grotto Trail or my alternate no-name one used last year to get to the top. Our return would use the Bee Canyon trail \nHowever\, this time we will explore some of those little used and overgrown trails we have seen crisscrossing our other paths. Instead of returning via Bee Canyon\, we’ll use the Pipleline Trail (an alternate to Neon Way) \nTrekking poles recommended for this one: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \nHike is about 5 miles with 1500 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide \nHistorical Note \nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \nDirections \nHead for O’Melveny Park using the map pin and Google Maps. The parking lot is small and fills up quickly. Plan on parking on neighboring streets. \nTrail statistics are approximate. SUMMARY:Eagle Rock the Long Way
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Scroll Down to RSVP” style=”custom” custom_background=”#ffffff” custom_text=”#1c9ec5″ shape=”square” link=”url:%23rsvp”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Our hike begins in the northwestern corner of Topanga State Park on the Viewridge Trail in Santa Maria Canyon. Highlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views. From here we’ll hook up with dirt Mulholland and head east to Garapito Canyon \nWe’ll then descend the narrow Garapito Trail cutting a sinuous course through mature chaparral — mostly mountain mahogany and ceanothus up to 20 feet tall. The blossoms of the ceanothus exude an attractive wild honey scent in spring. Tunneling through the tall brush\, the trail eventually switchbacks down to the sycamore-shaded canyon bottom\, crossing two forks of Garapito Creek and then contours a short distance over to an east fork. \nAfter rising out of Garapito Canyon Eagle Rock will come into view. The most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park\, it will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will snack and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \nAfter that we’ll take the Cheney Ridge trail and across Summerhill Ranchback to Santa Maria Canyon to complete the loop. \n\n\nHIKE IS ABOUT 12 MILES WITH ABOUT 2\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. SEE THE HWD HIKE RATING GUIDE \n\nSome of this hike\, at the beginning and end\, is along paved and dirt country roads\, and provides a nice little walking tour of the Topanga neighborhood. There will also be a short walk on Topanga Canyon. \nDirections \nWe’ll meet at the Viewridge Trail \n \nFrom Highway 101: drive south on Topanga Canyon Blvd for 3.7 miles. Turn left on Viewridge and drive 0.5 miles to the end of the road. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway: head north on Topanga Canyon Blvd. for 9 miles and turn right on Viewridge. \nPark by end of street.
