SUMMARY:Wet & Wild(wood) Potluck Picnic
DESCRIPTION:This hike is the perfect hike for the first day of summer. It will require several stream crossings along the Arroyo Conejo and Wildwood Canyon Creek so wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet\, and shorts (or long pants you don’t mind getting wet). \nWe’ll visit the Wetlands and have a picnic lunch at shady Skunk Hollow\, a tree-lined area adjacent to a flowing creek with a picnic table. A nice little area. It will be almost all downhill to Skunk Hollow — \n🍴Bring some food and drink to share🥂 and your own utensiles\, etc \nWe’ll return to the cars via my secret trail and more stream crossings. Hike will be about 7 miles with 950 ft total ascent (it can be shortened to 5.5 miles and 600′ ascent with two less stream crossings if weather demands it)

SUMMARY:🌇Sundowner Hike & Party: Los Robles - Los Padres Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our “sundowner hikes” are back! This is a potluck party hike in the Los Robles Open Space. We will do the Oak Creek Canyon-Los Robles-Los Padres Loop among some beautiful oak groves and great views of the Conejo Valley. That will be about 4.5 miles with 900′ total ascent and is rated EASY (see Hike Rating Guide) \n🥂Bring food and/or drink to share. 🍽️ \nThere are facilities at the trailhead including picnic benches. You can leave the food and drink in car during hike. \nHighlights along the way include the “Lily Tomlin” trail and “Sherwood Forest.” (not to be confused with the Sherwood Forest of my Pentachaeta Loop hike) \nGroup Trivia: We first did this hike in May 2008. Back then\, when I was living in Oak Park/Westlake Village\, it was the location of our first Sundowner Hikes. \nSunset: 8:04pm \nDirections to trailhead: \nFrom the 101 freeway exit Moorpark Rd. Drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave. and go a half mile to the parking lot. Don’t go all the way to 482\, instead\, follow sign to trail head

SUMMARY:Journey to the Center of the City - Franklin Canyon
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This HDW original is a classic. On this 6 mile hike I will take you through Franklin Canyon and then a bit off-trail to the “planar” center of Los Angeles. It will make a great photo opp. The first hill will be a workout\, but there is lots of shade on this one. Franklin Canyon Park is one of the very few places in LA with a greenbelt filled with pines\, sycamore\, eucalyptus and cedars\, most notably the Atlas Cedar and mature Coast Redwoods that are a rare site in most big cities. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nHighlights along the way to the center of the city: \nFranklin Canyon Lake:\nThe location where we see Opie skipping a rock in the water during the opening credits of The Andy Griffith Show and Capt. Kirk falling in love with an Indian maiden on Star Trek. \n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/dIf5xKdKGe0″ align=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row] \nThe Doheny House:\nThe family of oil baron Edward L. Doheny used the canyon as a summer retreat and a place to graze and water their cattle. The Doheny family built a Spanish style home here in 1935. \n \nHeavenly Pond:\nA small duck pond located to the west of the Franklin Canyon Lake. See the turtles? \n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS 6 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message]\nBring snacks and a quart of water. \nHere are some scenes from some popular TV shows and movies filmed at Franklin Canyon. Do you recognize any?\n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”52893\,52892\,52891\,52890″ img_size=””][/vc_column][/vc_row] \nFor you music lovers\, here are a couple of albums covers photographed in Franklin Canyon:\n[vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”52897″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”52896″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column] \n  \nDirections – Parking is Free\nFrom West Los Angeles: \nHead north on Beverly Drive following signs to Coldwater Canyon. Turn left on Coldwater/Beverly Drive\, and turn left again on Beverly Drive\, at Fire Station No. 2 and continue through the neighborhood (gps may send you to closed service road – just stay on Beverly). \nContinue through the residential area on Beverly Dr to Franklin Canyon Dr and bear right. Enter park and at the intersection of Franklin Canyon Drive and Lake Drive make a sharp right onto Lake Dr and head to the end of Lake Dr and parking lot next to large grass lawn. \nEnter park and at the intersection of Franklin Canyon Drive and Lake Drive make a sharp right onto Lake Dr and head toward the end of Lake Dr to parking lot next to large grass lawn. \n(If you are coming down Sunset from east of Beverly Dr its probably easier to take Rexford to Beverly) \nFrom the San Fernando Valley: \nThere are two ways to get to the Meetup location. For simplicity I am limiting this description to the simplest. Its a tiny bit longer than the direct route\, but there is always a few people that park in the wrong place using that one. Plus it seems GPSes favor the longer route\, but then get it wrong later. \nHead south on Coldwater Canyon Blvd over the hill toward Beverly Hills. Make a sharp right on N Beverly Dr (at the little park) and follow Beverly Dr through the neighborhood (gps may send you to closed service road – just stay on Beverly). \nAerial and Street Views of Parking Lot \n

SUMMARY:🌄Sundowner Hike: Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:This short hike offers a nice variety of canyon and ocean scenery\, and is not as well traveled as some of the other trails in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. \n[asa2_smart_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″ /] \nWe’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. \n🧺We’ll break at a picnic bench overlooking the canyon. Bring snacks and drink to share. \nHere is a slide show from a previous hike \n \nHighlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \n \nAfter crossing the bridge we’ll take Summer Hill Ranch trail to the Canyon Overlook. Here\, either at a picnic table or atop a sandstone outcrop\, you can enjoy excellent views of Topanga Canyon’s trademark geology and of Santa Maria Creek. For the rock scramblers there are caves and crevices to explore (while us chickens watch from the picnic bench). \n \n  \n🧺We’ll break at a picnic bench overlooking the canyon. Bring snacks and drink to share. \n  \n \n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS 3 MILES WITH ABOUT 550 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED EASY. SUMMARY:Big Sycamore Canyon - Wood Vista Canyon - Sand Dune Loop
DESCRIPTION:http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/a/7/b/600_438459547.jpeg \nThis hike will climax with a rare and stunning ocean vista\, including almost a straight down view of white\, foamy surf and turquoise-tinted shallows. \nOur hike will begin in Big Sycamore Canyon\, the finest example of a sycamore savanna in the State Park System. Some of the gangly sycamores soar to heights of over 80 feet. \nhttp://www.venturacountytrails.org/RecentPhotos/2015-02-03PtMuguSPScouting/IMG_9933.jpg \nAfter a pleasant 3 miles we’ll turn up the Wood Vista Trail (a segment of the Backbone Trail)\, our only major ascent during the hike. \nWe’ll climb steadily for the next two miles\, making long\, looping switchbacks. As we climb higher\, we’ll get a nice view not only of Big Sycamore Canyon and Boney Mountain. \nWhen we reach the Overlook Fire Road take a break and enjoy views of La Jolla Valley. We’ll head south on the Overlook Fire Road\, which follows the ridge that divides Big Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon. Keep your eyes peeled for Anacapa Island\, visible between two hills. \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/1/2/a/600_438465354.jpeg \nAfter a couple of miles on the Overlook Trail we’ll hit the Scenic trail and traverse the ridge above the Great Sand Dune to the prominence shown at top. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/5/7/5/600_438545493.jpeg \nHike is about 9.5 miles with 1100 ft gain and is rated MEDIUM+. See the Hike Rating Guide \nDirections to trailhead \nTake PCH to Sycamore Canyon Rd. Sycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nTurn into Sycamore Canyon toward campground and go to Kiosk. Pay\, park and hang out. Parking was $12 or $14 last time I was there. Credit cards OK (but bring exact change just in case). We’ll be meeting in the main lot near kiosk There is additional pay parking on the beach side of PCH. \nSee also http://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/26205514/438824911/ \n==================================================== \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:eBike Trail Ride: ULV - Cheeseboro - Palo Comado Big Loop
DESCRIPTION:Its been several years since I posted a bike ride. All bikes are welcome. On this one we’ll travel the gently rounded hills and canyons of Cheeseboro and Palo Comado Canyons\, starting from Upper Las Virgenes Canyon. \nThis outing will be an opportunity to discuss ebike tips and tricks. I am on my third ebike \nWe’ll ride at a pace suitable for semi-beginners on mostly hard-packed and wide trails. Planned ride is a 13.5 mile loop with 2\,300 ft total ascent. \nBring a tool kit\, helmet\, water and snacks. \nHistorical note: At the time I was posting bike rides\, regular bike riders called ebike riders “cheaters.” As I look around today\, these same people now have their own ebikes. There sure are a lot of them these days. Hence I am rebooting my group bike rides. \nDirections\nDrive to the north end of Las Virgenes Canyon Rd. Park on street taking note of parking restrictions. We meet at the end of the road.

SUMMARY:🥂🎂 Birthday & ✈️ Bon Voyage Hike - Lunch at Malibu Seafood
DESCRIPTION:My birthday is coming up\, and I can’t wait to celebrate with my hiking buddies at one of our favorite hiking and post-hike lunching spots – Malibu Seafood Cafe. Soon after I will be leaving for Italy — not sure when I will be back 😂 \n🦞 One of the great things about Malibu Seafood — besides the food and beach views\, and being next to trailhead — is they allow you to bring your own beverages (including alcohol). \n🍹 Bring some to share! Leave your beverages in the car until you return from hike. \nThere will be two hiking options in Corral Canyon with lunch at Malibu Seafood. 🌊All three have spectacular ocean views \n1️⃣ The classic Corral Canyon loop rated EASY+ at 2.5 miles and 530′ total ascent. This will bring you back to trailhead around 10:30 am \n2️⃣ Extend 1️⃣ into Puerco Canyon. This hike is rated MEDIUM at 4.5 miles and 1150′ total ascent. This will bring us back to trailhead around 11:30 am. \nWe all start doing hike 1️⃣. After about 2/3 of the way into that loop\, hike option 2️⃣ begins. I will lead the option 2️⃣ group. \nThose that want to continue on the easy hike option 1️⃣ will continue on the easy-to-follow trail for the remaining third of hike. We’ll probably have someone on that option that knows the trail\, but you can’t get lost \nAs usual\, follow my flour arrows if for some reason you get far behind. \nDirections\nFree street parking along PCH is available\, or $12 in trail head lot. Credit or cash. We’ll meet at trailhead (its near the toilets). The hike\, not the parking\, starts at 9am \nMalibu Seafood Cafe is next doo to trailhead parking lot.

SUMMARY:Secret Staircases of Rustic Canyon + Murphy Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nPOST HIKE LUNCH: \nSONNY McLEAN’S\n2615 Wilshire Boulevard Santa Monica\, CA 90403\nTake Allenford/26th st toward Wilshire\nhttps://goo.gl/maps/UnP6etQqotaUXGxU9 \nTHE HIKE \nA hidden staircase\, the longest public staircase in Los Angeles\, drops 24 stories into the middle of lush Rustic Canyon. I will combine a 6-mile hike with the stairs taking in Rustic and Sullivan Canyons by way of little known trails. Along the way we’ll visit Murphy Ranch\, a 1930s hideout where\, according to urban legend\, Third Reich sympathizers could sequester themselves until German rule had been established in the USA. My research indicates the legend it FALSE \nAlong the way we will answer the riddle: \nWhat does the inventor of the photobooth\, The Beach Boys\, a bunch of WWII-era NAZIs and Charlie Manson have in common? \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, 3 miles west of the 405\, turn north at the light onto Capri Drive (there is a shorter way by turning onto San Remo Dr to Monaco Dr\, but its easy to miss). After 1/3 mile continue through the traffic circle\, remaining on Capri Drive for another 1/3 mile until it comes to an end at Casale Road. Sullivan Ridge Fire road begins to the left but do not turn left on Casale Rd. Find street parking to the right or on adjacent roads. We’ll meet on the corner of Casale and Capri \nYou will be parking in a residential neighborhood with parking restrictions — pay attention to signs. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:VIP Hike - The Forgotten Trails Series
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Scroll Down to RSVP” style=”custom” custom_background=”#ffffff” custom_text=”#1c9ec5″ shape=”square” link=”url:%23rsvp”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nDetails\nI call this one “The Lost Trails of Los Liones”\nOne day in 2013\, while bushwhacking around Los Liones Canyon\, I found some side trails. After some research I came to the conclusion that these trails were used before the current Los Liones Canyon Trail was built\, i.e.\, it was was the old Los Liones trail! It immediately became a VIP hike \nWe’ll take the old trail up the canyon and climb our way to the East Topanga Fireroad. The “no fireroad rule” will be in effect and we will use the paralleling single tracks that will take us to “Wirebreak Peak” (for lack of a better name). There may be steep and/or loose sections here. If you’ve done the Wirebreak trail with us you probably know the peak I am referring to. We’ll return along with the unwashed masses down the “new” Los Liones book trail \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 4.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nNote: The last time I took the group was 2019 and a small section became so impassable we had to change the hike. Since then Katja\, Andi and I cleared the trail and made it passable in 2020\, but haven’t been back since. There will undoubtably be some bushwhacking\, but I don’t expect any large branches blocking our way. Bring some hand tools (optional) for additional grooming along the way. \n\nDirections:\nWe’ll meet at the Los Liones Trail Head at the end of Los Liones Dr\nThere are a couple of  parking lots on the right\, however I expect them to be full. SUMMARY:Coquina Mine Loop
DESCRIPTION:This loop will include a shortcut to the Coquina Mine in Las Llajas Canyon. It was formerly a VIP hike\, however the shortcut has been getting a lot of use in recent years and I am opening the hike to entire group. \nWe’ll start behind a dam and along some lesser known trails above Chivo Canyon. We return via the canyon trail. Highlights along the way: \n\nPower shovel and other artifacts from a 1929-1935 limestone strip mining operation\nFossils\nTar pits\nRanching remnants\n\nHike is about 7 miles with appx 1\,600′ total ascent is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nFrom the 118 take Yosemite Dr north toward the hills for 1.6 miles. As you round the bend you will pass the trailhead and the name of the street changes to Cottonwood Dr. Make a right on Westwood St and park at corner. We meet on the corner at 9am \nImportant\nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated.\nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. As we head up a grassy ridge and connect with Eagle Springs Fire Road expansive views of the Santa Monica Mountains\, Santa Ynez Canyon and a slice of the Pacific Ocean will begin to emerge. \nSoon the looming Eagle Rock comes into view. \nEagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park\, will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will eat\, drink and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \nBring snacks and/or booze to share \nHike is rated MEDIUM. For a detailed description see our previpous hike here https://www.hikingwithdean.com/event/musch-loop-to-eagle-rock-2022/ \nDIRECTIONS \nWe’ll meet in Trippet Rach by the main kiosk near the bathrooms \nFrom Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, turn east on Entrada Road; that’s to the left if you are coming from the San Fernando Valley. Follow Entrada Road by turning left at every opportunity until you arrive at Topanga State Park. \nPark on street before the last left turn (and walk a couple blocks) or pay the ranger in the park ($12?). If you park on street be sure that your left wheels are inside the white line. Note parking restrictions.

SUMMARY:New Year's Hike: Mini Bulldog Loop - MASH Site - Lost Cabin Trail
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a hike in Malibu Creek State Park the other groups don’t do. Our old destination\, the stone house\, is gone but this moderately strenuous 7-miler is still a great diversion from the usual MCSP treks. \nWe’ll start at the western end of Crags Rd near Malibou Lake and head on up to Lakeside Lateral and the Bulldog Mtwy via Maqueketa Terrace. We’ll loop the lateral and from there we descend down along the Bulldog Lateral. Bulldog is a fire road/powerline access road that descends crookedly along slopes thickly clothed in chaparral and will provide rewarding views of Goat Buttes. \nNear the bottom we’ll come across a dry creek bed then take Crags Rd to the MASH site. After paying homage to Hawkeye\, we’ll visit the Lost Cabin site. The trail to the site probably has the most beautiful surroundings in the park with the red sandstone Goat Buttes to the north and green\, rugged mountains to the south. It is very secluded with few travelers. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections \nWe’ll meet in the Malibou Lake Neighborhood on the corner of Crags Dr and Lookout Dr. Park on neighboring streets such as Lookout Dr\, Seminole Dr or Olivera Dr.

SUMMARY:Adventure Hike: Upper Zuma Falls
DESCRIPTION:I normally reserve this hike for the HWD VIPs\, but this month I am inviting all HWD members. VIPs are members that have made a donation or assisted with trail work. For more info see https://www.hikingwithdean.com/vip-circle/ \nWe will begin by hiking northwest on the Backbone Trail to Upper Zuma Canyon. Our first stop will be Newton Canyon Falls\, a beautiful waterfall in a lush\, forested grotto with moss-covered rocks. \nNewton Falls is just the appetizer. Our main course will be Upper Zuma Falls. While on the main trail it can be seen from the distance. However\, back in 2010\, we did an exploratory hike and found a path to the base of the falls. Although we will be hiking off the main trail to get to the falls\, the way has become popular and is now relatively clear of obstacles. \nAfter visiting the falls\, we’ll return to the trail and continue to Zuma-Trancas Ridge\, turn north\, and take my (still) secret trail I found in 2011 to to the top of the falls. We’ll take a snack break by the pool at the top of the falls. \nBring the usual stuff\, but most importantly\, bring a sense of adventure! Wear long pants. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,350 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections\nNote: Parking is limited. Please use use Kanan Park and Ride for carpooling: 29166 Roadside Dr\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301 \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety.
