We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. Highlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \nOn the way back we’ll stop at a picnic bench overlooking Santa Maria Canyon for our break. From the Sycamore Campground parking lot we’ll hike up Big Sycamore Canyon for about a mile and then head east on the Serrano Canyon trail into a densely wooded narrow canyon\, with a lovely seasonal stream crisscrossing the trail numerous times\, and abundant wildlife. As we begin to gain elevation and the trail starts turning north a stunning vista of rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Ridge begins to emerge. This is Serrano Valley \nWe’ll explore the Serrano Family Home Site. This was a large ranch back in the day. The area is strewn with old farm equipment\, water pumps\, home items\, and other artifacts. Trails may be a little overgrown in this area \nI first discovered the Serrano Ranch artifacts in 2013 after the Springs fire. The fire uncovered a bonanza of artifacts including home appliances\, tools\, etc. Check out the pictures here. \nWe’ll crisscross many of the old ranch roads and trails there. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. \nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting our use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nToday we will do one of my classic loops and add Adventist Hill to the mix. Trekking poles and good lug soles recommended \nHike is about 7 miles with 1500′ gain. It is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating guide. \nHere is a video from a previous hike in Hill Canyon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QC9pYzkaCF0 \nHistory of Hill Canyon\nHill Canyon is part of a system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus and ridgelines now known as the Conejo Canyons Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. The golf course plans got canceled and a land trade was worked out by the same city officials who caused the $2.6 million to be wasted. \nDirections to trailhead \nUse Google Map and drive to address. We’ll begin our trek at the top of the Old Stagecoach Rd and venture west through Twilight Canyon to Corriganville. After a little site-seeing and a loop around Corriganville we’ll head up a hill to the 118 and cross under it using the wildlife corridor. From there we’ll take a seldom-used trail to the fork at the Hummingbird Trail and Rocky Peak Trails. We’ll visit the Rock House and have our snack break. \nWe’ll continue the loop by heading down Rocky Peak Rd and catch the El Camino Nuevo which will bring us to the Spahn Ranch. And then its back to The Old Stagecoach Rd \nEnjoy the history lessons below 🙂 \nThe Spahn Ranch \nThe ranch took its name from dairy farmer George Spahn\, who purchased the property in 1948. Many western-themed movies and television shows were filmed on the ranch\, including Duel in the Sun (1946) and television episodes of Bonanza\, The Lone Ranger\, and Zorro. It was also the filming location for the B-movie The Creeping Terror. \nThe Spahn Ranch is notorious for having been the primary residence of Charles Manson and his followers\, the “Manson Family\,” for much of 1968 and 1969. It was built as part of a movie set. Across the trail from the rock house is a natural cave above the road. Rumor has it that an entire family lived there at one time. From 1937 to 1965 Corriganville Movie Ranch\, owned by stuntman Ray “Crash” Corrigan\, was a working film studio and movie ranch for outdoor location shooting. In 1949\, it opened to the public on weekends and holidays. \nIn 1965 Ray Corrigan sold the property to Bob Hope. A housing subdivision called Hopetown was developed and built on a parcel near the park entrance. In the late 1960s and early 1970s part of the site was used for motorcycle racing. In 1970 the ranch was swept by fire. It provided an inland route between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara that was shorter than the coastal route. The first overland stagecoach to use the pass made its run between San Francisco and Los Angeles on April 6\, 1861. We’ll be hiking along this old grade which was replaced by our familiar Old Santa Susana Pass in 1917. \nThe Santa Susana Wildlife Corridor \nThis wildlife corridor under the 118 helps provide a vital linkage between the Santa Susana Mountains and the Santa Monica Mountains. But did you know that during the 1950s it was home to a world-class race track? The broken sections of asphalt that twist through the eucalyptus trees and around the old Western Town was in fact an official racecourse with international prestige! \nClick here for a cool video \nTrack History \nThe 2-mile Paramount Ranch Raceway opened for its first event over the weekend of August 18th and 19th 1956. Among the notable names competing were Dan Gurney\, Lance Reventlow\, Ritchie Ginther and Bob Bondurant\, who made up a more than 350-strong entry list of drivers across a variety of categories. \nIt was a narrow and twisting course with ups and downs. Due to many accidents and tragedies the track closed 7 races and 18 months later. After closure it was used for the next several years by Paramount for filming movies. \nMovie History \nThe track was used for filming many movies\, including 1957’s “Devil’s Hairpin”\, “Roadracers” (1959) and “How to Stuff a Wild Bikini” (1965). Perhaps the most famous depiction of the circuit on the big screen came during 1965’s ‘Spin Out‘\, notable for starring Elvis Presley. Devil Canyon\, with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment\, makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. The year-round stream provides ample water to support this 550-acre park’s numerous plant communities and a diverse wildlife population. \nYou will love the natural beauty of Solstice Canyon\, yet wildfires have left behind the architectural ruins of our recent past. During our trek we will pass remains of the Keller House\, a stone hunting cabin built over one hundred years ago\, and significantly damaged by fire in 2007. Upon arriving at the park’s most popular feature\, the 30′ Solstice waterfall\, we will find the stone and brick ruins of The Roberts Ranch house designed by architect Paul Revere Williams in 1952. In 1929\, Williams became the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects and later designed a prominent landmark at the Los Angeles International Airport\, the “LAX Theme Building (1961).” \nWe will extend the classic Solstice Canyon hike by taking the Sostomo Trail and Deer Valley Loop Trail. We begin in the prestigious gated neighborhood of the Indian Springs Estates in Chatsworth. From there we head north and enter Indian Springs Open Space\, set within the backdrop of surrounding open and untouched mountains\, ravines and hillsides. \nAfter a little more trekking we will find ourselves in Rocky Peak Park. This extraordinary property forms the most critical wildlife habitat linkage between the Simi Hills and the Santa Susana Mountains. Spectacular sandstone boulders\, outcroppings\, oak savannahs\, and perennial water sources provide a diverse habitat for birds\, mammals\, and reptiles. \nWe’ll be taking our snack break atop a hill at the HWD Ranch West surrounded by old farm\, ranching equipment (see featured photo) and commanding views. \nHISTORICAL NOTES\nDuring our hike we’ll be passing by land that was once the homesteaded property (Fern Ann Falls) of the first American family to settle in the San Fernando Valley: Neils and Ann Johnson. I’ve redesigned the hike so if you have done this with me in the past you can look forward to something a little different this time \nHike into History\nA Visit to the Rancho El Escorpion Lime Kiln \nBell Canyon is the location of the Rancho El Escorpion lime kiln site. The site sits on  a seam of limestone running from Bell Canyon to Dayton Canyon and the Woolsey Canyon area (the sites of 2 more kilns). The kiln was constructed over a time period starting between the late 18th  and early 19th  centuries by a succession of native Chumash people and others of mixed Chumash and Mexican heritage. \nThe kiln was used to process quicklime (used on the San Fernando Mission buildings) throughout the nineteenth century. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. We proceed across Mulholland onto the Cistern Trail in Malibu Creek Stat Park. The Cistern Trail ascends a bit as it leaves Mulholland Highway\, but soon after begins heading downhill\, with views of Reagan Ranch off to the right\, and the Goat Buttes and Castro Crest of Malibu Creek State Park ahead. \nAfter a short distance we will merge with the Lookout Trail and take that down to Century Lake for a snack/lunch break next to the water.
