DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE\nBeginning the hike at the U-Vanu Trail on Viewcrest Drive immediately gives the outing a quieter\, more residential feel than the main Fryman Canyon entrances. The trail slips gently away from the street and begins a steady climb through chaparral and low brush\, with filtered views back toward the San Fernando Valley opening up as you gain elevation. It feels calm and local at first\, as if you’ve discovered a back door into the hills. \nAs the U-Vanu Trail rises\, the terrain becomes more open and sunlit\, and the path connects naturally into the broader Fryman Canyon trail network. Here the hike takes on a more energetic rhythm\, with wider fire roads\, airy ridgelines\, and expansive views that contrast with the tucked-away feel of the trailhead. This section delivers the classic Fryman experience: steady climbing\, open skies\, and a sense of space above the city. \nNear Mulholland Drive\, the route crests the ridge and transitions toward Franklin Canyon. Crossing over\, the landscape changes quickly—oak and sycamore trees replace scrub\, the trail narrows\, and the air cools as you descend. The shift from Fryman’s exposed hills to Franklin’s shaded canyon feels dramatic and refreshing. \nA brief stop at the TreePeople exhibits adds a thoughtful pause\, offering insight into local ecology\, water conservation\, and the relationship between these canyons and Los Angeles. Deeper in Franklin Canyon\, the trail meanders past creek beds and historic stone features to the Franklin Canyon Reservoir\, where wildlife and still water create a peaceful midpoint. \nThe hike concludes by climbing back out of Franklin Canyon and returning to Fryman Canyon\, eventually reconnecting with the U-Vanu route. SUMMARY:🚶‍♂️‍➡️Easy Hike: The New Paramount Ranch (from Reagan Ranch)
DESCRIPTION:We were here last May and found a new old west is rising! Let’s check out the continiuing rebuilding progress of the famous Old Western Town at Paramount Ranch with this easy hike. \n📽️As many of you know\, until the Woolsey fire\, this was the filming site of hundreds of movies and TV shows since 1927. The Woolsey Fire destroyed the original Western Town buildings. Only two structures survived: a white chapel built for “Westworld” and a train depot built for “Dr. Quinn\, Medicine Woman.” \n🏎️The ranch site also was also the home of a world class race track in the late 50s. \nThe National Park Service is building a new Paramount Ranch set to house four buildings on the footprint of the historic structures\, and all will be built with an eye toward wildfire safety. Plans for the new structures include a prop shed\, barn\, restrooms and a large pavilion\, which all could be used for events and as “the backbone for future filming.” The chapel and depot will remain in place. \nLet’s check out the progress! \n👉Hike will be about 4 miles with 500′ of total ascent and rated EASY+. Depending on group\, we can easily add more elevation. \nGetting There\nIn order to respect the NPS parking limits we will be parking and meeting at the old Reagan Ranch in Malibu Creek State Park and hiking into Paramount Ranch. SUMMARY:Towsley Canyon
DESCRIPTION:This outing follows a counterclockwise lollipop loop that blends wide canyon roads\, singletrack\, and ridgeline views for a well-rounded\, moderate hike. \nWe’ll start from the Rivendale Ranch trailhead and head up Towsley Canyon Road\, an easy\, gradual warm-up through oak-studded canyon bottoms. From there\, we’ll turn onto the Towsley View Loop Trail\, climbing steadily through shaded sections\, a narrow sandstone gorge\, and classic chaparral slopes. Going counterclockwise keeps the ascent manageable and rewards us with expanding views of the Santa Clarita Valley as we gain elevation. The high point along the ridge sits around 2\,400 feet\, offering wide-open vistas and a good place to pause and take it in. \nFrom the ridge\, we’ll descend into Wiley Canyon\, then complete the loop using the Canyon View Loop Trail\, which rolls gently back toward the trailhead without retracing our steps. The full route is about 5.4 miles with roughly 1\,100–1\,400 feet of elevation gain\, \nEcologically\, this hike is a snapshot of Southern California chaparral. Along the way you’ll see coast live oaks\, sycamores\, sage\, buckwheat\, chamise\, manzanita\, and scrub oak. In winter and spring\, wildflowers like mustard\, lupine\, and poppies often add color to the hillsides. Wildlife commonly spotted here includes lizards\, ground squirrels\, rabbits\, mule deer\, and a wide variety of birds such as red-tailed hawks\, vultures\, quail\, and scrub jays. Rattlesnakes do live in the area\, so we’ll stay alert\, especially in warmer weather. \nOverall\, this is a scenic\, rewarding hike that feels wild without being remote—perfect for experiencing Towsley Canyon at its best. \nHike is rated MEDIUM. DESCRIPTION:On this one Chuck Dickens will be our invisible leader. We’ll do a loop around two Ranchos: Rancho Sierra Vista and Rancho Potrero. \nWe’ll begin and end on the Satwiwa Loop Trail. Rancho Potrero abuts the west end of the loop and includes grasslands\, coastal sage scrub with the Conejo rock plant association\, and riparian habitats. SUMMARY:🏫A Back to School Hike to the CLU Rocks
DESCRIPTION:The “CLU” rocks are located on Mount Clef Ridge overlooking the Cal Lutheran University campus. They have been a fixture of CLU’s landscape since its second academic year (1962). Every year\, in one of Cal Lutheran’s longest-standing traditions\, freshman and transfer students paint the rocks. \nTo get there we’ll be taking a “slightly” 😜more difficult route than the students use: From Wildwood Park via the Santa Rosa Trail. We will return via the Lower Butte Trail. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a classic San Gabriel Mountains adventure that pairs high-elevation alpine views with rich Southern California mining history! \n📅HISTORY OF THE AREA\nThis trail traces the steps of Charles “Tom” Vincent\, a Civil War veteran and hunter who lived in solitary self-reliance in these mountains starting in the 1860s. In 1895\, while tracking a bighorn sheep along the steep crags of Mount Baden-Powell\, Vincent spotted quartz veins gleaming with gold. His discovery sparked the creation of the Big Horn Mine. Tens of thousands of dollars in gold were extracted over the following decades\, leaving behind fascinating historic structures hidden high above the canyon floor. \n👁️HIKE OVERVIEW & VIEWS\nWe’ll tackle this hike as a ~4-mile loop (with roughly 1\,000 feet of total ascent) combining dense timbered gulches\, historic artifacts\, and sweeping canyon vistas. \n\nVincent’s Cabin: Starting at Vincent Gap (~6\,600 ft elevation)\, we drop down the forested Vincent Gulch Trail into a shaded ravine lined with towering Jeffrey pines\, sugar pines\, and white firs. Hidden in the trees sits Vincent’s remarkably preserved 19th-century log cabin.\nThe Connector & Mine Road: From the cabin\, we climb a short\, steep connector trail that ascends through pine duff to join Big Horn Mine Road. As we head along this wide shelf carved into the cliff face\, the canopy opens up to dramatic\, sweeping views overlooking Mine Gulch\, the East Fork San Gabriel River gorge\, and the rugged wilderness of the Sheep Mountain area.\nThe Stamp Mill Ruins: The highlight of the route is the massive\, weathered wooden stamp mill clinging to the mountainside. Here\, we can admire the historic timber framework and catch the chilly draft flowing from the gated mine portal.\nFlora & Fauna: Along the trail\, keep an eye out for high-country wildlife—including Nelson’s bighorn sheep perched on the rocky ledges\, mule deer\, and Steller’s jays—and don’t forget to catch the butterscotch-vanilla scent of the Jeffrey pine bark along the ridge!\n\n🚶‍➡️TRAIL DETAILS \n\nDistance: ~4 miles round-trip (Lollipop)\nTotal Ascent: ~1\,000 feet\nDifficulty: Medium due to terrain.
