SUMMARY:Franklin Trail - Carpinteria
DESCRIPTION:At over 100 years old\, the Franklin Trail is one of the oldest trails in Carpinteria. It closed back in the 1970s because ranchers worried people could carry avocado root rot to their crops. Through much work among government agencies\, the Santa Barbara Land Trust and volunteers\, most of the trail has recently re-opened \nOur hike begins in an urban setting at Carpinteria High School with a steady climb up Franklin Canyon. After a couple miles and 850 ft up we arrive at a prime spot with spectacular vistas of Carpinteria\, Santa Barbara\, and the Channel Islands. Then its three more miles of hiking fire roads\, ranch roads\, with the trail moving up-and-down into wild areas and delivering us into the Los Padres National Forest at 1\,703 feet. We return the same way we came up. Round trip is about 10 miles with 2\,000 ft total ascent. \nHere are some photos from the trail. SUMMARY:🥂 Night Hike - Serrania Ridge to the Water Tank 🍻
DESCRIPTION:Our hike begins at Serrania Ridge\, a pocket of parkland on the suburban edge of Woodland Hills. The ridge’s name—and its geography—seem to be in limbo. Serrania Ridge is also called Woodland Ridge. Is it a part of the Santa Monica Mountains? Or is it a part of Chalk Hill to the northeast? \nWe can contemplate these questions as we roller-coaster up and down–mostly up–partaking views of the Santa Monica mountains rising before us\, Calabasas hills to the right of us\, Chalk Hill to the left of us and the west San Fernando Valley behind us. After about 1 mile we cross dirt Mulholland and continue on a steep trail to the top of the ridge where we’ll turn onto a service road and head up to the water tank. \n🍷🥨Bring snack and drinks to share \nNO WHITE LIGHTS – Red and Green lights only. If you don’t have one you can piggy-back off of someone else’s. Here are some recommendations:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMOUNTAINTOP 22L Unisex Hiking/Camping BackpackNot available\n View on Amazon\n\n\n\n\nTETON Sports Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack...Not available\n View on Amazon\n\n\nHike is a 3.7-mile lollipop with about 930 ft total ascent.  No white lights allowed. Bring a green or red headlamp/light if you have one. If you don’t you can piggy back off mine and the others’ \n \nSunset: 7:21 PM \nDirections\nFrom the 101 Freeway\, take the De Soto exit and head south for 0.7 miles. On the way\, De Soto becomes Serrania Avenue. Bear left onto Wells Drive and the park will be almost immediately on your right. \nFacilities are available at the trail head (but may be locked?).

SUMMARY:Talepop Loop & Lunch at La Paz
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on the site of the former Chumash village known as Talepop\, in the Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve. \nWe will be dedicating this hike to Jeff Sherman. Jeff signed up for this hike on August 21 before passing away last Monday during our Zuma Canyon hike. (See Comments section) \nHe loved hiking and would have wanted us to continue with this one. He will be with us in spirit. \nOur hike begins at Juan Bautista de Anza Park which will connect us with the Talepop Loop Trail. The trail climbs up a ridgeline with nice views of Liberty Canyon\, Las Virgenes Canyon and oak-studded rolling hills. \nThe hike will be a combination of ranch roads and single track trails.  We will make a side trip on the Grasslands trail and visit the historic Sepulveda Adobe and stroll past White Oak Farm (see below)\, creating a 4.75 mile (appx) lollipop with about 600 ft total ascent. Bring at least a quart of water. \nPost hike lunch is down the road at La Paz Restaurant\n4505 Las Virgenes Rd.\nCalabasas\, CA 91302 \nSlide Show\nhttps://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/28194703/Talepop.mp4\nThe swing is gone but the swingers will be there! \n\n\nThe Sepulveda Adobe\nBuilt in 1863\, the home of California pioneer homesteader Don Pedro Alcantra Sepulveda stands today on its original site just west of the corner of Las Virgenes Road and Mulholland Highway. \nPedro Sepulveda and his wife Soledad raised their twelve children at this small home near Las Virgenes Creek. The rancho was farmed and the many crops grown there included field corn\, beans\, potatoes\, turnips and onions. A mulberry tree planted by Don Pedro well over 100 years ago thrives today and is still bearing fruit. Sepulveda supported his family as a charcoal maker and supplier of oak firewood that heated the fine homes in Los Angeles of the day. His roundtrip to the city with a wagonload of wood took three days at the time when the 101 freeway was nothing but a narrow dirt trail. \nClick on a pic for full view plus captions\n[av_gallery ids=’55982\,55983\,55984′ style=’thumbnails’ preview_size=’portfolio’ crop_big_preview_thumbnail=’avia-gallery-big-crop-thumb’ thumb_size=’square’ columns=’3′ imagelink=’lightbox’ lazyload=’animations_off’ id=” custom_class=” av_uid=’av-24w8lk’ admin_preview_bg=”] \nThe Sepulveda Adobe was inhabited from the time of its construction until 1980. Badly damaged in the 1994 earthquake\, seismic retrofitting and restoration began eight years later\, shepherded by the California State Parks Dept. Most work was completed in 2017 and public access accommodations were to follow.  The home itself is now barely a shell of its former self due to the Woolsey fire \nWhite Oak Farm\nWhite Oak Farm on Las Virgenes Rd was an early 20th-Century dairy and ranch. The barn here\, built in the 1920s\, is one of the oldest remaining barns in the region. During the 1920s  and through the 1940s\, the farm served as a “gentleman’s ranch.” The site was eventually purchased by Bob Hope in 1952. Bob Hope’s brother James lived there and managed the ranch for more than 20 years. The Hopes sold the property to the State in 1975 and it was incorporated it into Malibu Creek State Park. Today(?) it is a residence for one of the park rangers. \nThis photo is from my Thanksgiving 2016 hike. I haven’t visited since before the Woolsey fire and current condition is unknown\nDirections:\nJuan Bautista de Anza Park is on the corner of Las Virgenes and Lost Hills Rds. Park in the lot or on the street. Meet at west end of parking lot. \nFrom the Valley – Take 101 west. Exit Las Virgenes. Left on Las Virgenes to Lost Hills Rd. Right on Lost Hills. Park will be on left but continue to next corner for U-turn. \nFrom TO – Take 101 east. Exit Lost Hills Rd. Right on Lost Hills. Right into Park

SUMMARY:Corral Canyon - Puerco Canyon Loop - Malibu Seafood - BYOB
DESCRIPTION:On this one we’ll visit the old pig farm and have a post-hike lunch at Malibu Seafood Patio where they let you bring your own drink. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. We’ll return to the restaurant via another secret trail \nWe’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and mysterious buildings… \nHike is about 7 miles\, with two interconnected loops and about 1800 ft total ascent. Hike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the new hike ratings guide: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/pages/29633850/HIKE_RATINGS_GUIDE/ \nCheck out my slide show from various similar hikes\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/89yUvvc9Xqw’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” id=” custom_class=” av_uid=’av-378l1o’] \n  \nAfter the hike we’ll have lunch next door at Malibu Seafood Patio. Kitchen opens at 11:00 AM. Maybe we’ll spot some dolphins frolicking in the waves\, or some celebrities. \n \nThey let you bring your own beverages including booze. So pack a cooler with your favorite beverage and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch by the trailhead — you will deserve it! I’ll bring some white wine. \nBring sunscreen\, hat\, 2 quarts water\, sturdy shoes and a snack. Clothing optional. \nThere is street parking on PCH\, $7.00 in lot next to restaurant at the iron ranger — cc ok \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER.

SUMMARY:Once Upon a Time In Hollywood Chatsworth
DESCRIPTION:On this hike\, we will cross paths with the famous and the infamous. The famous is the site of the Spahn Ranch movie set for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The infamous is the site of the real Spahn Ranch. Along the way we’ll learn additional Chatsworth history. \nOur trek begins at the top of the Old Stagecoach Rd and ventures west and down through Twilight Canyon to Corriganville where Quentin Tarantino created the set for the Spahn Ranch in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. For those of you familiar with the park\, you know this isn’t the first movie filmed at Corriganville and we’ll be visiting some of the older movie and TV sites also. \nAfter a little site-seeing and a loop around Corriganville we’ll head up a hill to the 118 and cross under it using a wildlife corridor. From there we’ll take a seldom-used trail to the fork at the Hummingbird Trail and Rocky Peak Trails. Here\, we’ll find a rock house — a small room under a rock overhang. It was built as part of a movie set. Across the trail from the rock house is a natural cave above the trail. Rumor has it that an entire family lived there at one time. This a perfect spot for our snack break! \n\n\nWe continue our loop by heading down Rocky Peak Rd and catch the El Camino Nuevo which will bring us to the Spahn Ranch. Nowadays\, the ranch is basically nonexistent; its remnants are fully blended into a maze of trees\, shrubs and poison oak. We’ll take another snack break at the infamous Manson family cave. Immortalized in a 1969 Time magazine photo/piece about the clan\, the rock remains untouched\, and offers fans the chance to channel their inner Mansonite for a morbid photo op. \nOur return to the Old Stagecoach Rd will take us across the lands once claimed by Chatsworth homesteaders. \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c7′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=” custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-n88i8k’ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike will be about 8 miles with 1\,900 ft total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide\n[/av_notification] \n  \nEnjoy the history lessons below 🙂\n  \nThe Spahn Ranch\nThe ranch took its name from dairy farmer George Spahn\, who purchased the property in 1948. Many western-themed movies and television shows were filmed on the ranch\, including Duel in the Sun (1946) and television episodes of Bonanza\, The Lone Ranger\, and Zorro. It was also the filming location for the B-movie The Creeping Terror. \nThe Spahn Ranch is notorious for having been the primary residence of Charles Manson and his followers\, the “Manson Family\,” for much of 1968 and 1969. Spahn was 80 years old and living at the ranch when he allowed The Manson Family to move in\, rent-free\, in exchange for labor.A wildfire destroyed all of the Spahn Movie Ranch’s film sets and residential structures on September 26\, 1970. George Spahn died on September 22\, 1974\, and is buried in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in nearby Newhall\, California. \nHere we are February 2018; on the ranch and re-doing the iconic 1969 Time-Life photo.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCorriganville\nWe’ve been here many times. From 1937 to 1965 Corriganville Movie Ranch\, owned by stuntman Ray “Crash” Corrigan\, was a working film studio and movie ranch for outdoor location shooting. In 1949\, it opened to the public on weekends and holidays. \nWhy not just let Crash show you around the ranch on his DVD \nLoading ...\nIn 1965 Ray Corrigan sold the property to Bob Hope. A housing subdivision called Hopetown was developed and built on a parcel near the park entrance. In the late 1960s and early 1970s part of the site was used for motorcycle racing. In 1970 the ranch was swept by fire. In 1979 another fire destroyed virtually all of the remaining structures. \nIn 1988 The land was acquired by the City of Simi Valley for use as a regional park \nHere are videos of the “Jungle Jim Rock” and “Robin Hood Lake.”  To the right is Fort Apache \n[av_one_half first av_uid=’av-1qa17tg’] \n[av_video src=’http://youtu.be/G-MeZdkkeFo’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-1bqa6yc’ id=” custom_class=”] \n[/av_one_half] \n[av_one_half av_uid=’av-s3zo0k’] \n[av_video src=’http://youtu.be/YK7ajTUHHrY’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-lxwzdg’ id=” custom_class=”] \n[/av_one_half] \nThe structures have been torn down but here we are October 2018 crashing the set for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/0F0lGfSnEyI’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-nx8pn8′ id=” custom_class=”] \nEl Camino Nuevo\nMore appropriately known as the Chatsworth Grade Road it replaced the stagecoach route in 1895 and provided an easier and smoother route to transport goods. SUMMARY:10th Annual Chatsworth Halloween Hike - Saturday Night Version
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been doing this one in Chatsworth/Twin Lakes since 2009. It’s the scariest hike this side of Transylvania! \nDue to ongoing development in the area our exact path is unknown at this time\, but I estimate it to be about 4 miles with 700′ elevation gain. I will have more accurate figures after pre-scouting the area. \n \nCostumes are optional: https://amzn.to/2n5iZyX \nI don’t have many night photos but enjoy this video from Halloween 2014\n \n  \nDon’t forget to check out the daytime extended version of the hike \nPart of the hike will be on little-used trails. Long pants would be nice for some short segments\, but not required for hike. Wear hiking shoes or boots. Expect the unexpected. If you are not an experienced hiker this hike may not be for you. \nNO WHITE LIGHTS – Red and Green lights only. If you don’t have one you can tailgate off of someone else’s. Here are some recommendations:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMOUNTAINTOP 22L Unisex Hiking/Camping BackpackNot available\n View on Amazon\n\n\n\n\nTETON Sports Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack...Not available\n View on Amazon\n\n\nDIRECTIONS\nTake 101 or 118 to Topanga and head to the north end. Make a left on Poema and park at curb. We meet at the Bella Vista entrance \nAdvice – avoid the Twin Lakes neighborhood roads. Use major arteries to get to Topanga and Poema \nCheck out the map and familiarize yourself with the destination and neighborhood. Carpooling is recommended (see Warner Center Park and Ride).

SUMMARY:Triunfo/Los Robles/White Horse Loop
DESCRIPTION:Details\nThe last time we did this hike was 2 years ago on Nov 11. Back then it was a VIP hike\, but not today. This hike will be in the Los Robles area of the Santa Monica Mountains. We’ll begin at the Triunfo Canyon trail head and hike up one of the nicest trails in the Los Robles trail system\, including White Horse Canyon and Conejo Crest. \nHere is a slide show from that hike 2 years ago\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/oxnATxYOcak’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-uekj8z’ id=” custom_class=”] \nInstead of the usual loop we’ll be going off trail to explore the secret trails of the forbidden zone. SUMMARY:The Original E.T. Hike - Saddle Ridge Fire Assessment - 🐶s OK
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDetails\nWe’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008! Since then we have improved upon the hike eliminating all but a few yards of sidewalk walking. Dogs are ok on this one. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. \nSo let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak- and sycamore-shaded canyons–Aliso and Limekiln–and some eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights \nWe’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie and take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET.  Get the movie here \nThe video below shows the location of our hike. The maker did an excellent job in juxtaposing scenes from ET with present day shots. Pay particularly close attention to the opening shots\, the dirt path a bicycle is riding on\, and the van drivng into a park. We will be hiking over and through these locations. \n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/tpKHedikPjs’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-jvl5bs17′] \n  \nHike is about 8 miles with about 1\,000 feet total ascent. \n[av_notification title=’Warning’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8df’ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’red’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-ij6t46′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nWe’ll be hiking through some of the Saddleridge fire burn area that might present some obstacles and change the planned route\n[/av_notification] \nNO BEGINNERS \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-s3zor5′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is rated MEDIUM. SUMMARY:V.I.P. Hike: Mountaineer's Route to Saddle Peak and Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:High above central Malibu is Saddle Peak\, just east of Malibu Canyon\, one of the highest points in the Santa Monica Mountains at 2\,805 feet. Up here you are literally in the sky\, often above the clouds over Malibu. On a clear day\, facing south\, you can see a vast stretch of the Pacific coast\, Catalina and Channel Islands miles out in the water. If facing north\, you can see the inland valleys of the Malibu Creek watershed or east toward Calabasas and the San Fernando Valley. On a cloudy day\, you look down on the cloud tops as if in an airplane. \n\n\nThe climb up Topanga Ridge will be the toughest part of getting there. It is a knife-edge ridge that will require some minor bouldering/scrambling (0.5 – 1.0). There is a steep 200′ sandstone slab that serves as an optional shortcut for the heartier hiker with some derring-do. At the top of the ridge\, and 1200 ft higher than the parking lot\, is the old and abondoned Topanga Fire Lookout. We will take a short break here and enjoy the stupefying views of the San Fernando Valley\, LA Basin\, Santa Monica Bay and even San Gorgonio Pass 100 miles away. From here we will connect up with the Backbone Trail and hike up to Saddle Peak and take another break on the rock formations. We will complete the loop by descending Saddle Peak via the Cold Creek Preserve and upper Stunt High trail. \nHike is about 8 miles with 2000 ft total ascent \nSlide show from previous hikes\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/VJn9GQZ4KGg’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-ws6onb’ id=” custom_class=”] \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. SUMMARY:🚘 Back to the Future Hike at China Flat (& Simi Peak) - Lunch at Lamppost Pizza
DESCRIPTION:On this one\, Marty McFly will be taking us to China Flat\, the 1885 location of the Seamus McFly farm\, Boothill Cemetary and the Delgado Mine. Seamus was/is/will-be Marty’s great-great-grandfather. DeLoreans are no longer allowed on the trail so this will be a little strenuous. \nWe’re heading back to the future in more ways than one. We did this hike almost a year ago\, just after the Woolsey fire. You can view those pics here: It will be interesting to see the recovery progress. \nThe trail to China Flat is a difficult one\, but makes an excellent introduction to the Simi Hills\, with its awesome sandstone skyscrapers towering over flatland neighborhoods. The “flat” in China Flat is a splendid plateau carpeted with emerald green grass and covered by oak savannas. \nWe’ll do a loop around China Flat\, visit a vernal pond and poke around some artifacts artifacts from a bygone era. Along the way we will ascend to Simi Peak\, the highest peak in the Simi Hills at 2\,405 ft. \nHere are photos from January 2019\n \nHike will be a loop of appx. 8.5 miles with about 2200′ total ascent \nPOST HIKE LUNCH\nLamppost Pizza\n1145 Lindero Canyon rd.\nWestlake Village\, CA 91362\n(Corner of Lindero and Kanan) \nDIRECTIONS\nFrom U.S. 101 in Agoura\, exit on Kanan Road and drive north three miles to Hollytree Drive. Turn right\, then left into Oak Canyon Community Park. After entering park make an immediate left into the first parking lot. We will meet by the pond. If the lot is full\, follow the park access road to the main parking area further up the road and walk across park back to pond.

SUMMARY:Last Hike of the Year: Grasslands Trail to Century Lake & the Rock Pool
DESCRIPTION:Join us in popular Malibu Creek State Park for the last hike of 2019. We’ll start on the Grasslands Trail off of Mulholland Hwy and head south on a scenic hike over rolling hills and through open fields of grain. \n\n\nOur first destination is the Rock Pool\, a placid stretch of water framed by volcanic cliffs. Cliff divers and rock climbers will provide the entertainment. This generically wild-looking site has served as a backdrop for outdoor sequences filmed for Planet of the Apes\, South Pacific\, Tarzan\, Swiss Family Robinson\, and many other productions. \nNext\, we’ll head for the shaded shores of Century Lake. Ducks\, coots\, and herons frequent the lake\, their squalling and callings reverberating off the weathered\, honeycombed cliffs rising from the lake’s far shore. Redwing blackbirds flit among the cattails and rushes. The famous diving scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed here. \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is about 5 miles with about 800 ft total ascent and is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. SUMMARY:First Hike of Year: Tri Peaks via Mishe Mokwa Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first hike of 2020 at the Circle X Ranch. The Mishe Mokwa Trail is known as the most beautiful trail in the Santa Monica Mountains. Round trip distance is 7.5 miles with a net elevation gain of 1000 feet (about 1700 total). \nDuring Wednesday’s hike we will be visiting 2 Earthcaches: Sandstone Peak and Inspiration Point \nSandstone Peak\, the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains at 3\,111 feet\, is not sandstone at all. Its actually made of igneous rock formed 15 million years ago during the Conejo Volcanics. During this time Sandstone Peak grew to 10\,000 feet! After millions of years of erosion we are now left with its ruddy-colored core. From a distance its color makes it look like sandstone\, hence the name Sandstone Peak. \nAt Inspiration Point we will see more evidence of how the Santa Monica Mountains were formed. From here\, a view of Los Angeles\, Oxnard Plain\, and the Valleys of Southern California will reveal the evolution of the Farallon Plate subduction zone that created the transverse mountain range known as the Santa Monica Mountains. The Channel Islands\, which were created at the same time and by the same process that created the Santa Monica Mountains\, can be seen from here too. \nWe’ll take a side trip to Tri-Peaks\, a stack of house-sized volcanic boulders. We’ll take our main break here and explore the fascinating slots and caves beneath the giant boulders. \nEvent rules: \n1. Carpooling is required. No more than than 10 cars shall be part of the group. There is a convenient park-and-ride at Kanan & Canwood and Kanan & Roadside. The corner of Ventura and Topanga in Ralph’s parking lot is a good meeting spot also\n2. All hikers must stay on established trails\n3. No use of flour or chalk to mark trails.\n4. Practice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints \nDirections to Trailhead: \nUse this link for Google Map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=34.114167\,-118.91814&daddr=&hl=en&geocode=&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=17&sll=34.114292\,-118.919857&sspn=0.003642\,0.006866&ie=UTF8&ll=34.112053\,-118.927388&spn=0.012436\,0.023603&z=15) \nPark at the Mishe Mokwa trailhead. \nMishe Mokwa Trailhead parking lot is on the both sides of Yerba Buena Rd\, 3.75 miles west of Mulholland or 7.2 miles north of PCH. Yerba Buena is very curvy so drive carefully. \nSan Fernando Valley/Calabasas: \nFrom points east of Westlake Village\, exit 101 at Kanan and go south to Mulholland. SUMMARY:Happy Camp Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:The last time we were here was January 18\, 2011\, and so here we are again. \nHappy Camp Canyon Park\, north of Moorpark in the Santa Susana Mountains\, was home to several Chumash Indian groups. Later\, it was part of the immense Strathearn Ranch\, founded by a pioneer Simi Valley family. They ran cattle on the land and enjoyed family vacations in the back part of the canyon. \nThe 3\,000 acre park has retained its natural setting and is an important wildlife corridor linking the Simi Hills with the Santa Susana Mountains. It is a lush riparian oak woodland with an intermittant stream. The canyon is sheltered by Oak Ridge to the north and Big Mountain to the south. \nThis loop hike will follow the Happy Camp Trail through the interior of the park on an abandoned ranch road. The trail winds through open grasslands and the gorgeous stream-fed forested canyon. Wildlife include rabbits\, bobcats and Golden Eagles. \nHighlights along the way: \n-oyster and clam rich shales\n-yellow and red rock outcroppings – formed from underground oil fires\n-acorn woodpeckers\n-ranch artifacts \nHike is strenuous at 11 miles and 1850 ft total ascent \nDirections to trail head \nFrom the 118 Fwy in Simi or the 101/23 Fwys in Thousand Oaks\, take the E Los Angeles Ave/23 North exit. Go west 1 mile to Moorpark Av (Hwy 23) and turn right (north). Proceed north 2.6 miles on Hwy 23 (name will change to Walnut Canyon Rd) until you come to a bend in the road. Don’t take the bend — Go straight onto Happy Camp Rd and then an immediate right on Broadway Rd. Park in lot at the east end of the road. \nLast time I was here there was a $5 parking fee in official lot\, but some free parking outside the official lot on street.

SUMMARY:Adventure Hike: The Forgotten Trails of Cheeseboro & Las Virgenes Canyons
DESCRIPTION:Las Virgenes and Cheeseboro Canyons like you have never seen them before!\nThis adventure hike arose from an exploratory I did in April 2010. We’ll hike along forgotten ranch roads and use trails. It will include a hike over the eastern ridge of Cheeseboro Canyon and to the Baleen Wall along a forgotten and overgrown trail. We’ll then descend into Upper Las Virgenes Canyon by way of a vanished ranch road (This segment is sure to be very overgrown. Be prepared for a little bushwhacking). Much of the hike will be on well-known trails. \nHere are some photos from a couple previous hikes showing some of these trails\nClick on pic to enlarge \n[av_gallery ids=’62837\,62836\,62835\,62834\,62833\,62832\,62831\,62830\,62829\,62828\,62827\,62826\,62825\,62824\,62823\,62822\,62821\,62820\,62819\,62818\,62817\,62816\,62815\,62814\,62813\,62812\,62811\,62810\,62809\,62808\,62807\,62806\,62805\,62804′ style=’thumbnails’ preview_size=’portfolio’ crop_big_preview_thumbnail=’avia-gallery-big-crop-thumb’ thumb_size=’square’ columns=’7′ imagelink=’lightbox’ lazyload=’animations_off’ av_uid=’av-k5zq5ty0′ alb_description=” id=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is 8-10 miles with about 1500 ft total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain and distance. SUMMARY:Pre-Game Hike: Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads
DESCRIPTION:Don’t forget to join our FB group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nOur 5th Annual Super Bowl Pre-Game Hike is perfect. Short enough to get you home on time and prepare for parties and kickoff\, yet big on beauty and adventure. \n \nOur destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. We’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail. \nHere is what it looks like:\nhttp://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=26010464 \nMore: \nhttp://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/11686632/ \nhttp://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=18735712 \n(Optional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures) \n \nCalabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \n \nHike is 4.7 miles with about 1\,200 feet total gain. \nWe’ll have our snack break at a hidden cistern. Don’t drink the water hee hee \n \nDogs ok \nNo beginners \nPost hike lunch at Maria’s Italian Kitchen in El Camino shopping center at 23331 Mulholland Dr. Its to the left of Wells Fargo. $10.00 corkage fee \nDirections \nThe trail head is located on Mulholland Hwy less than a fifth of a mile west of Dry Canyon Cold Creek Road. Turn Left on Mulholland and continue 5.7 miles to a small parking area on the right. or…. \nFrom 101 Ventura Fwy in the Vally: take Valley Circle/Mulholland Dr exit south\, turn right on Valmar Rd (becomes Old Topanga Cyn Rd) then right on Mulholland Hwy 2.1 miles to the parking area on the left. \nFrom PCH take Topanga Canyon and turn left up Old Topanga. Take a left at Mulholland Hwy for a couple miles and then turn left onto turnout. If you are coming up Malibu Canyon take a right at Mulholland for 5.7 miles \nPark off-pavement. SUMMARY:La Jolla Valley - Chumash - Ray Miller Loop
DESCRIPTION:Details\nJoin us and the small animals and birds of La Jolla Canyon on this loop hike with panoramic views of coastline and The Channel Islands. Flower blooms in the spring are phenomenal. One of the the main attractions are large swaths of native California grassland — some of the last remaining unspoiled areas in the state. \n\n\nBecause of the continued closure of the canyon trail up to the waterfall we are going to do this in a special way. We’ll meet on PCH at the entrance to the canyon and walk 2 miles down the ocean side of scenic PCH to the Chumash Trail. Several years ago PCH flooded out and broke up and had to be realigned — we’ll walk along the old broken PCH. \n  \n \nAlong the way we’ll have the opportunity to come face to face with Mugu Rock! You’ve seen it in the distance\, now you will be able to touch it. \n \nConsider the walk along PCH a warmup to the strenuous Chumash Trail. The Chumash trail is an ancient trail which leads from the Pacific Ocean to La Jolla Valley. It was used by the Chumash 7000 years ago\, and believed to be the oldest trail still in continuous use in the Santa Monica Mountains. \nThis trail is very strenuous with almost 1\,000 feet gain in only 0.6 miles. But the views from the top are spectacular \n \n  \nAfter we climb the Chumsh Trail we’ll swing around the Pt Mugu Peak Trail and bag Mugu Peak. We’ll take a group photo at the flag pole. Every year on 9/11\, since 2002\, chief selects from the Naval Base Ventura County replace the flag on Mugu Peak. The previous flag is retired in a ceremony on the base. \nHere we are a couple years back \n \n  \nAfter descending the peak we’ll head into the grasslands of La Jolla Valley \n \nWe’ll be taking our break at the hike-in campsite. There is a fancy outhouse there. One of the highlights along the way is this pond. Will there be water this week? Naw. \n \nAfter our lunch break we’ll hike along the ridge separating Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon. We’ll return to our cars via the Ray Miller Trail – the western terminus of the Backbone Trail \nHere us the view from the Ray Miller Trail \n \n  \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n  \nHike is 12 miles with about 2\,200 ft total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain and distance. See the Hike Ratings Guide\n[/av_notification] \nBring at least 2qt water\, snacks \nPost Hike Lunch\nSpruzzo Restaurant and Bar\n29575 Pacific Coast Hwy (turn left on Busch Dr.)\nMalibu\, CA 90265\nTel: (310) 457-8282 \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \nDirections to Trailhead\nThere is free parking on PCH near park entrance. If you have to park inside there is an iron ranger that accepts credit cards\, or maybe even a human at the gate. \nFrom Los Angeles\, after a long and relaxing drive down the Pacific Coast Highway (22 miles past Malibu Canyon)\, you’ll enter Ventura County and pass the so-called “Great Sand Dune.” Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Park on PCH on either side of entrance. \nFrom Ventura: Entrance is a couple miles after Las Posas. Park on land side of PCH on either side of entrance. \nMeet on PCH at entrance to park

SUMMARY:Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Classic! \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \n \nThe site was owned by President Reagan between 1957 and 1967\, before he was elected Governor of California. Prior to the Woolsey fire\, the Reagan Ranch property still had the original barn and stables\, which were used as the park maintenance facility. \nTrails loop through rolling meadowlands and grand old oaks and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \n\n\nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers. \n[av_image src=’https://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/03121937/mash.jpg’ attachment=’63152′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ styling=” hover=” link=” target=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’ copyright=” animation=’no-animation’ av_uid=’av-l3obcq’ id=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”][/av_image] \n  \nBetween the MASH set and the ranch we’ll enjoy a short snack break at Century Lake. Part of the famous jump into the river by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Paul Newman & Robert Redford) was done by stuntmen at Century Lake (with plenty of Hollywood magic helping out) because the river in Colorado seen in the film wasn’t deep enough to support such a high jump. \n[av_image src=’https://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/03121937/century-lake.jpg’ attachment=’63154′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ styling=” hover=” link=” target=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’ copyright=” animation=’no-animation’ av_uid=’av-op3y9m’ id=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”][/av_image] \n  \nOn our return to the ranch we’ll take a side trip to a scenic vista point at the top of Lake View Trail will It will provide us a beautiful view of Malibou Lake and the surrounding mountains. SUMMARY:Devil Canyon & Deerlake Highlands Adventure Hike
DESCRIPTION:I am calling this an “adventure hike” due to ongoing housing development in the area. There might be a little bushwhacking and some creeking. \nWe’ll be hiking on a couple trails we had cleaned up earlier this year. \nOur loop hike begins at the north end of Canoga Avenue and meanders north through Chatsworth’s Deer Lake Highlands and a network of of equestrian trails. From above the highlands we will descend into Echo Canyon creating a loop with Devils Canyon. Devils Canyon with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. Live Oak and Willow trees fill the canyon and sandstone geology of the wildest kind is found. \n\n\nHere is a slide show from a couple similar hikes a while back.\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/L3kKEbqxHF8′ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” id=” custom_class=” av_uid=’av-sfnxhm’] \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ color=’orange’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ border=’solid’ size=’large’ custom_class=” av_uid=’av-380l96′ admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is about 7 or 8 miles with about 1\,500 ft total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Ratings Guide\n[/av_notification] \nWe may run into poison oak — wear long pants. There may be water in the creeks we’ll be crossing so wear hiking boots you don’t mind getting wet. \nPost Hike Lunch\nTGI Friday’s\n19855 Rinaldi St\nNorthridge\, CA 91326\n(only 3 miles away) \n  \nDirections\nFrom Simi and the 118: http://tinyurl.com/twinlakes-simi \nFrom Granada Hills and 118: http://tinyurl.com/twinlakes-granada \nFrom Canoga Park/Woodland Hills: Head north on Topanga\, Owensmouth or De Soto and turn on Chatsworth St to Canoga and turn north. \nPark on north end of Canoga Av under the 118 Fwy \n**Do not block any gates or trails with your car** \nIf you’re early\, you’re on time. If you’re on time\, you’re late. If you’re late…don’t bother showing up

SUMMARY:Paramount Ranch: Past & Future
DESCRIPTION:A SMMNRA Event \nLights! Camera! Action! Paramount Ranch’s convenient location and mountainous backdrop have captured the vision of hundreds of filmmakers. Elaborate movie sets have come and gone while the ranch’s massive oak trees have remained as silent witnesses. \nJoin a ranger-led walk around the ranch to learn about how it has changed over the past century and what the future may hold for this popular filming location. \nMeet at the trailhead kiosk next to the bridge. Wear sturdy shoes for uneven terrain. We recommend bringing water\, a hat\, and sun protection\, as there is little shade on the walk. Restrooms available. Heavy rain cancels. For any questions\, including directions\, please call the visitor center at (805) 370-2301.
