SUMMARY:VIP Hike in Upper Rustic Canyon
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Scroll Down To RSVP” link=”url:%23rsvp”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The secret recesses of Upper Rustic Canyon and it’s shady “bay tree” tributary\, invite the avid local hiker on an adventurous loop hike on unmarked and partially overgrown trails along some of the most rugged sections of the Santa Monica Mountains. \nAt the outset we descend into Upper Rustic Canyon where we will be joined by scattered live oak and a nice mixture of sycamores\, willows\, bay laurels\, ferns and assorted riparian plants — hallmarks of a year round water supply\, at least underground. Much of the hiking here is along an uneven creek bed. \nThere may be some poison oak along the creek. Bring some Tecnu \n[asa2 tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” ajax=”1″]B000A7S3WK[/asa2] \nWe exit Upper Rustic by way of the Bay Tree Trail. A dense grove of bay laurel tree stumps sprouted here after the 1978 Mandeville Canyon fire\, creating what is surely one of the most densely shaded spots in the Santa Monica Mountains. Water from a tiny spring seeps over the trail at one point\, just below a multi-trunked bay tree. \nAlong the way we’ll bag Temescal Peak and explore some towering sandstone formations known as Cathedral Rock \nIf we have a good rain before the hike we’ll make a side trip to the Blue Gorge which adds a couple miles \nLong pants and long sleeves recommended \nDirections\nWe will be meeting at the top of Reseda Blvd. Take 101 freeway and exit Reseda Bl. in Tarzana. Drive south toward the end of Reseda and park on street. There is a fee to park in the park. To avoid the fee park outside the yellow line and walk up to the top Reseda \nBe careful when exiting the area – there is a stop-sign camera[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,600 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN.  SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Bulldog Loop - 14.5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This 14.5 mile hike begins at the Backbone Trailhead on Malibu Canyon and proceeds up Mesa Peak Motorway. After about about 6 miles of uphill trekking with ocean views\, we reach the top of Corral Canyon where we can do some optional rock climbing\, take a break\, snack\, horse around\, etc. See picture. \nThen we leave the Backbone Trail toward Castro Crest and Bulldog Motorway where we begin our descent into Malibu Creek State Park. We’ll hike through the MASH site and traverse MCSP\, climb some more hills and enter Tapia Park and return to our vehicle. We’ll stop a couple more times along the way. If the Visitor Center is open we will stop there. \nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/2/4/1/event_14213825.jpeg \nHere are more photos from a previous hike here (http://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=878862) \nTotal ascent is about 2800 feet. Highlights include ocean and valley views\, spectacular sandstone formations\, unidentified ruins\, MASH site\, Century Lake. \nBring food\, lots of water\, camera. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom 101\, take the Las Virgenes exit and head south for 5 miles. The parking lot is on the right\, just past Piuma Road. \nFrom PCH\, take Malibu Canyon Road north for 4.4 miles. The parking area is on the left\, just before Piuma Road (you might want to drive up to Piuma and take a U-turn at the traffic light.) \nParking fee was $12.00 last time I looked. Bring exact change for iron ranger — be prepared to pay more \nPark free on Piuma at your own risk. We are meeting in the pay lot.

SUMMARY:Josephine Peak via Colby Canyon - A Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:By special request…. \nWant to hike to a mile-high summit in the San Gabriel Mountains with grand views over Los Angeles? Set your calendar for Josephine Peak via Colby Canyon in the front range of the San Gabriel Mountains. \nStarting on Angeles Hwy\, we’ll be taking the scenic rout to the summit ascending Colby Canyon along a narrow trail to Josephine Saddle. There we will cross a ridge to take Josephine Peak Road up to the 5\,558-foot summit and pull in expansive views north and west over Big Tujunga Canyon and southwest out of the mountains toward downtown Los Angeles and surrounding cities. \nWe’ll return via the wide Josephine Peak Fireroad\, the Nature’s Canteen Trail and a bit of Hwy for a 8 mile loop with about 2\,700 ft total ascent. The hike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the hike rating guide: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nThis is my first time in the area and descriptions are based on other people’s hikes. My research indicates no Adventure Pass is needed. \n**DIRECTIONS** \nWe’ll park and meet at the Colby Canyon trail head. There is additional parking beyond the trailhead \n**To get to the trailhead:** From the 210 Freeway in La Cañada Flintridge\, take Angeles Crest Highway (CA 2) northwest for 10 miles to a dirt turnout on the left (north) side of the road\, 0.8 miles past Clear Creek Information Center. Colby Canyon Trail begins from the left (west) side of the turnout.

SUMMARY:Loop Hike to Abandoned Pool\, Bee Rock and Old LA Zoo -- Griffith Park
DESCRIPTION:We don’t get into Griffith Park much but when we do its special. On this trek I’ll take you to an abandoned pool on top of a hill. \nThe pool was originally built in the 1920’s for a girls camp. The camp was destroyed by fire in the 1950s and a new camp was built slightly lower on the hill – as a boys camp. A new girls camp was built as well\, but further west. The pool remained in use by the boy’s camp until 1987 when it was closed after a bigger pool was built in the camp. \nOur hike will begin at the Fern Canyon Nature Trail. We’ll swing through the remains of the Old LA Zoo on the way up the hill to the pool. We’ll take a break at a lonely picnic bench by a memorial to Paul Ritschel\, a Sierra Club member who led monthly night hikes in the Park from 1969 to 1972. \nOn our return we’ll (trespass) through the new camp\, visit Bee Rock and another section of the Old Zoo \nWe’ll stay off the wide trails/roads as much as possible (of course) and on ridge-top use trails instead. The NO FIREROADS rule will be in effect! \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1800 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain

SUMMARY:🎉🥂15th Anniversary Hike and Potluck +BBQ! 🫕🍗
DESCRIPTION:Wow! Its our 15th anniversary. Let’s celebrate with a PotLuck & BBQ at Oak Canyon Community Park — we’ll do a hike also — and reminisce about the past 1.5 decades and plan for the next. \nOak Canyon Community Park is a beautiful\, 60-acre park with sandstone cliffs and a year-round creek. The park has a nature trail that loops through an oak forest\, crossing several times over Medea Creek. Near the trailhead is manmade waterfall cascading into a duck pond . \nThere are a couple of hiking options from EASY to MEDIUM. We’ll walk through the park and out to the north along the Suicide Trail and return via the China Flats Trail for a loop ending along Medea Creek and the Duck Pond. I’ll have more trail details later \nCovered picnic tables will be waiting for us on our return. \n🍷 Parking\, trailhead and picnic tables are in same area. Keep food/drink in car and bring out after hike. Please use the comment section to list the items you will be bringing. 🍽️ \nI predict a nice and sunny day. Bring plenty of water\, hat\, trail snacks and sunscreen. \nDirections: From U.S. 101 in Agoura\, exit on Kanan Road and drive north three miles to Hollytree Drive. Turn right\, then left into Oak Canyon Community Park. Make an immediate left into the first parking lot. We will meet by the pond. If there is no room\, follow the park access road to the main parking area\, farther up the road.

SUMMARY:O'Melveny Park -- Mission Point -- Bee Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:***O’Melveny Park*** spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nOur [hike](https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=ale&ti=10097&pri=2097&pw=245133&mi=10248&url=http%3A%2F%2Frei.com%2Fh%2Fcamping-and-hiking) here constitutes a comprehensive tour that includes wandering through grasslands\, the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as ***Mission Point*** and down into steep and shady ***Bee Canyon*** *.* \nHike is about 5 miles with 1500 ft total ascent and rated ***DIFFICULT*** due to terrain. See the [Hike Rating Guide](https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/) \n**Historical Note** \nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \n**Directions** \nHead for O’Melveny Park using the map pin and Google Maps. The parking lot is small and fills up quickly. Plan on parking on neighboring streets. \n*Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated.*\n*Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.* \n*Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.* \n*The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Natoma Loop - Vanalden Caves - Vanalden Vista
DESCRIPTION:The **Natoma Loop Trail** is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop located in Woodland Hills. But anything less than a couple miles is not worth getting up for so we’ll extend the loop into the cool side of Mulholland and ramble about a network of little-used trails. We’ll visit the **Vanalden Caves** and take a break on **Vanalden Vista.** \n**NOTE**: On our last visit here one of my secret trails was blocked by tree branches and scrub. Since then the HWD trail crew has cleaned it up and trail is now passable. \n*Hike is about 4-5 miles and rated MEDIUM*. See [Hike Rating guide here](https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/): \nDirections \nProceed to the south end of Natoma Ave and park on right side of street in dirt lot. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon and the Western Plateau Loop
DESCRIPTION:We began hiking and exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “Weekday Hikers.” At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. \nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting our use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nToday we will do my classic loop as depicted in these\nphotos from May 2015: [https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=25919744](https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=25919744) \n…about 7 miles and 1500′ gain \nWe’ll take our snack break at the KCLU-FM antenna \n**History of Hill Canyon**\nHill Canyon is part of a system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus and ridgelines now known as the Conejo Canyons Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. The golf course plans got canceled and a land trade was worked out by the same city officials who caused the $2.6 million to be wasted. \n**Directions to trailhead** \nUse Google Map and drive to address. Park in dirt lot at trailhead or on street near corner with Rancho Conejo Blvd \n“If you’re early\, you’re on time. If you’re on time\, you’re late. If you’re late…don’t bother showing up”

SUMMARY:Gaviota Peak\, Hot Spring Loop and Beyond (with Camping Option)
DESCRIPTION:**Gaviota Peak**\, at 2\,458 feet\, offers eye-popping views up and down the coast. You can look east clear across **Santa Barbara**\, and west across Lompoc toward Point Conception. In between is vast sea adorned by Channel Islands that hover on the horizon. To the north\, gentle rolling hills frame the fertile Santa Ynez Valley. \nWe’ll begin on the wide **Gaviota Peak Trail**. On the way up to the mountains we’ll stop and visit the milky blue waters and sulfur bubbles of **Gaviota Hot Springs** (aka Las Cruces Hot Springs). It’s a natural spring that was built up with concrete many years ago. \n*I will be extending the classic 7-mile Gaviota Peak loop hike to about 11 miles* \nA little before we get to the peak we will turn onto the **Campbell Trail** and extend the hike another 4 miles. It is currently abandoned by the US Forest Service because they do not want hikers to discover any **Chumash archeological sites**. We’ll be hiking along **Las Canovas Creek** for a bit and the trail may be overgrown with scrub and poison oak in some places. But I’ve heard it is a very nice trail 😉 \nWe’ll take our lunch/snack break at **Corrie Meadows.** I expect the meadow will be filled with wildflowers and a tiny little creek. \nWe’ll return to the classic loop along **West Camino Cielo Rd\,** bag Gaviota Peak and head back toward the Pacific via the **Trespass Trail\,** a narrow singe-track with stunning ocean views. Then its back to the trail head along **Tunnel View Trail** offering a view of the **Gaviota Tunnel.** \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to length and terrain. See the [Hike Rating Guide](https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/) \n**POST HIKE GATHERING AND OPTIONAL CAMPING**\nI’ve reserved **campsite #3 at** [Gaviota State Park Campground](https://goo.gl/maps/JJioDUMfBNiuYntz5) and after the hike everyone is invited back to my campsite for potluck lunch\, drinks\, etc. There is a day-use lot but at the time of this writing I do not know the parking fee. \nMy reservation is from 04/26/22 2:00 PM – 04/28/22 12:00 PM – let me know if you will also be reserving a spot and I will organize more events – there are many more trails nearby \n**DIRECTIONS TO TRAIL HEAD**\nUse [Google Maps](https://goo.gl/maps/1gRBx5NYwsoJguJM7) and follow directions to map pin. According to my latest info there is $2 parking fee that requires exact change. Look for the envelope thingy. We’ll meet at the Gaviota Peak Trail trail head by the map pin

SUMMARY:🌕🥂 Total Lunar Eclipse Full Moon Hike - Serrania Ridge and Potluck 🍻
DESCRIPTION:**NO WHITE LIGHTS** – ***Bring a green or red headlamp/light if you have one. If you don’t you can piggy back off mine and the others.’ If you have problems hiking in the dark without a white light\, do not attend.*** \nOur hike begins at Serrania Ridge\, a pocket of parkland on the suburban edge of Woodland Hills. The ridge’s name—and its geography—seem to be in limbo. Serrania Ridge is also called Woodland Ridge. Is it a part of the Santa Monica Mountains? Or is it a part of Chalk Hill to the northeast? \nWe can contemplate these questions as we roller-coaster up and down–mostly up–partaking views of the Santa Monica mountains rising before us\, Calabasas hills to the right of us\, Chalk Hill to the left of us and the west San Fernando Valley behind us. After about 1 mile we cross dirt Mulholland and continue on a steep trail to the top of the ridge where we’ll turn onto a service road and head up to the water tank. 🍷🥨 \n😋**Bring snack and drinks to share – and your own cups\, plates\, etc** \n**➡️[NO WHITE LIGHTS](https://amzn.to/387ghR2)**[ – ](https://amzn.to/387ghR2)***[Bring a green or red headlamp/light if you have one. If you don’t you can piggy back off mine and the others’](https://amzn.to/387ghR2) It will be a clear night – no lights may be needed*** \nHike is a 3.7-mile lollipop with about 930 ft total ascent and rated MEDIUM. [See hike ratings guide](https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/) \nFacilities are available at the trail head (but may be locked?). \n*Sunset: 7:49 PM*\n*Moonrise: 7:42 PM* \n**Directions**\nFrom the 101 Freeway\, take the De Soto exit and head south for 0.7 miles. On the way\, De Soto becomes Serrania Avenue. Bear left onto Wells Drive and the park will be almost immediately on your right. \n**NOTE**: Its uncertain if parking ever gets locked after hours – park in street to be safe 😉

SUMMARY:40th Anniversary E.T. Hike - 🐶s OK
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDetails\nWe’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008 with the original HWD ET hike and its become one of our most popular hikes. This year we’ll be doing it on the 40th anniversary of the movie premier!  Dogs are ok on this one. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. So let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak-and sycamore-shaded canyons and eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights \nWe’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie\, and will take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET. \nThe video below shows the location of our hike.\nThe maker did an excellent job in juxtaposing scenes from ET with present day shots. Pay particularly close attention to the opening shots\, the dirt path a bicycle is riding on\, and the van driving into a park. We will be hiking over and through these locations. \n\n\n \n\n\n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8.3 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \n[asa2 tpl=”Movie” asa2 image_size=”medium” ajax=”1″]B0087F7VSY[/asa2] \nDirections:\nHead for the North Valley YMCA on Corbin Ave. The trail head is on the right (if you are traveling north) just before the YMCA sign. Park on street. \n \n

SUMMARY:National Trails Day - Hike at the Malibu Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:National Trails Day is a celebration of trails that evolved from the report of President Ronald Reagan’s President’s Commission on Americans Outdoors. In 1987\, the report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes\, be on trails that wind through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing steps. The recommendation\, dubbed Trails for All Americans\, became the impetus behind several public and private parties joining American Hiking Society in launching National Trails Day® in 1993. National Trails Day is always the first Saturday in June. \nIn light of the history of NTD\, this year we’ll celebrate at the old Reagan Ranch \n \nDetails\nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow-land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Creek — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers. \n \n  \nBetween the MASH set and the ranch we’ll enjoy a short snack break at Century Lake. Part of the famous jump into the river by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Paul Newman & Robert Redford) was done by stuntmen at Century Lake because the river in Colorado seen in the film wasn’t deep enough to support such a high jump. \n \nOn our return to the ranch we’ll take a side trip to a scenic vista point at the top of Lake View Trail will It will provide us a beautiful view of Malibou Lake and the surrounding mountains. Reagan was the honorary mayor of Malibou Lake in 1953. \n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM DUE TO TERRAIN. SUMMARY:Cheeseboro Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:The gently rounded hills of Cheeseboro Canyon in the Simi Hills is older than the steeper\, more recently formed Santa Monica Mountains\, \nFor over 150 years\, ranchers made this canyon their home. Many of the native plants\, poorly adapted to heavy grazing\, were replaced with European annuals such as wild oats\, mustard\, and thistles. Despite numerous years of cattle grazing\, we can still find a variety of native plant communities\, including chaparral\, coastal sage scrub\, and riparian woodlands. \n–Cheeseboro Canyon has the largest concentrations of birds of prey nesting areas in the U.S. outside of Alaska. \n–The Valley Oak tree\, the largest oak native to the United States and possibly the world\, live in these canyons in what might be the largest southerly stand of trees left. \nOur 9-mile journey starts on the Modelo Trail\, ascending the western ridge separating Cheeseboro and Palo Comado Canyons. After a few minutes we descend into Cheeseboro Canyon. \nThen we begin a climb through a tributary of Cheeseboro Canyon\, soon reaching the Cheeseboro Ridge Trail (about 2 miles from the start). This will be a nice place for a water break and enjoy the scenery before beginning the biggest ascent of the hike. \nThe Cheeseboro Ridge Trail winds its way up the canyon wall. As we climb\, we’ll get views of the rolling terrain of the Simi Hills\, the Santa Monica Mountains\, and to the east\, if the weather is clear\, the San Gabriels. \nAfter a couple more miles we will see the Baleen Wall\, a geological formation that is one of the park’s most recognizable landmarks. Its rock outcroppings resemble the sight of a baleen whale rising from the ocean. We will take our snack break opposite the Baleen Wall overlooking the headwaters of Upper Las Virgenes Canyon creek \nAfter the break we’ll stroll to Shepherds Flat and Sulphur Springs. We may catch a whiff of rotten eggs\, indicating the presence of sulphur\, and therefore some extremely minor volcanic activity\, close to the surface. \nWe then continue down the Cheeseboro Canyon Trail making a big loop. \nHike is about 9 miles with 1\,300 feet total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT. SUMMARY:🌇Sundowner Hike & Party: Los Robles - Los Padres Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our “sundowner hikes” are back! This is a potluck party hike in the Los Robles Open Space. We will do the Oak Creek Canyon-Los Robles-Los Padres Loop among some beautiful oak groves and great views of the Conejo Valley. That will be about 4.5 miles with 900′ total ascent and is rated EASY (see Hike Rating Guide) \n🥂Bring food and/or drink to share. 🍽️ \nThere are facilities at the trailhead including picnic benches. You can leave the food and drink in car during hike. \nHighlights along the way include the “Lily Tomlin” trail and “Sherwood Forest.” (not to be confused with the Sherwood Forest of my Pentachaeta Loop hike) \nGroup Trivia: We first did this hike in May 2008. Back then\, when I was living in Oak Park/Westlake Village\, it was the location of our first Sundowner Hikes. \nSunset: 8:04pm \nDirections to trailhead: \nFrom the 101 freeway exit Moorpark Rd. Drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave. and go a half mile to the parking lot. Don’t go all the way to 482\, instead\, follow sign to trail head

SUMMARY:Journey to the Center of the City - Franklin Canyon
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This HDW original is a classic. On this 6 mile hike I will take you through Franklin Canyon and then a bit off-trail to the “planar” center of Los Angeles. It will make a great photo opp. The first hill will be a workout\, but there is lots of shade on this one. Franklin Canyon Park is one of the very few places in LA with a greenbelt filled with pines\, sycamore\, eucalyptus and cedars\, most notably the Atlas Cedar and mature Coast Redwoods that are a rare site in most big cities. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” limit=”1″]2[/asa2_collection] \nHighlights along the way to the center of the city: \nFranklin Canyon Lake:\nThe location where we see Opie skipping a rock in the water during the opening credits of The Andy Griffith Show and Capt. Kirk falling in love with an Indian maiden on Star Trek. \n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/dIf5xKdKGe0″ align=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row] \nThe Doheny House:\nThe family of oil baron Edward L. Doheny used the canyon as a summer retreat and a place to graze and water their cattle. The Doheny family built a Spanish style home here in 1935. \n \nHeavenly Pond:\nA small duck pond located to the west of the Franklin Canyon Lake. See the turtles? \n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS 6 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message]\nBring snacks and a quart of water. \nHere are some scenes from some popular TV shows and movies filmed at Franklin Canyon. Do you recognize any?\n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”52893\,52892\,52891\,52890″ img_size=””][/vc_column][/vc_row] \nFor you music lovers\, here are a couple of albums covers photographed in Franklin Canyon:\n[vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”52897″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”52896″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column] \n  \nDirections – Parking is Free\nFrom West Los Angeles: \nHead north on Beverly Drive following signs to Coldwater Canyon. Turn left on Coldwater/Beverly Drive\, and turn left again on Beverly Drive\, at Fire Station No. 2 and continue through the neighborhood (gps may send you to closed service road – just stay on Beverly). \nContinue through the residential area on Beverly Dr to Franklin Canyon Dr and bear right. Enter park and at the intersection of Franklin Canyon Drive and Lake Drive make a sharp right onto Lake Dr and head to the end of Lake Dr and parking lot next to large grass lawn. \nEnter park and at the intersection of Franklin Canyon Drive and Lake Drive make a sharp right onto Lake Dr and head toward the end of Lake Dr to parking lot next to large grass lawn. \n(If you are coming down Sunset from east of Beverly Dr its probably easier to take Rexford to Beverly) \nFrom the San Fernando Valley: \nThere are two ways to get to the Meetup location. For simplicity I am limiting this description to the simplest. Its a tiny bit longer than the direct route\, but there is always a few people that park in the wrong place using that one. Plus it seems GPSes favor the longer route\, but then get it wrong later. \nHead south on Coldwater Canyon Blvd over the hill toward Beverly Hills. Make a sharp right on N Beverly Dr (at the little park) and follow Beverly Dr through the neighborhood (gps may send you to closed service road – just stay on Beverly). \nAerial and Street Views of Parking Lot \n

SUMMARY:🌄Sundowner Hike: Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:This short hike offers a nice variety of canyon and ocean scenery\, and is not as well traveled as some of the other trails in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. \n[asa2_smart_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″ /] \nWe’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. \n🧺We’ll break at a picnic bench overlooking the canyon. Bring snacks and drink to share. \nHere is a slide show from a previous hike \n \nHighlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \n \nAfter crossing the bridge we’ll take Summer Hill Ranch trail to the Canyon Overlook. Here\, either at a picnic table or atop a sandstone outcrop\, you can enjoy excellent views of Topanga Canyon’s trademark geology and of Santa Maria Creek. For the rock scramblers there are caves and crevices to explore (while us chickens watch from the picnic bench). \n \n  \n🧺We’ll break at a picnic bench overlooking the canyon. Bring snacks and drink to share. \n  \n \n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS 3 MILES WITH ABOUT 550 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED EASY. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections\nFrom Highway 101: drive south on Topanga Canyon Blvd for 3.7 miles. Turn left on Viewridge and drive 0.5 miles to the end of the road. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway: head north on Topanga Canyon Blvd. for 9 miles and turn right on Viewridge. \nPark by end of street. SUMMARY:Big Sycamore Canyon - Wood Vista Canyon - Sand Dune Loop
DESCRIPTION:http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/a/7/b/600_438459547.jpeg \nThis hike will climax with a rare and stunning ocean vista\, including almost a straight down view of white\, foamy surf and turquoise-tinted shallows. \nOur hike will begin in Big Sycamore Canyon\, the finest example of a sycamore savanna in the State Park System. Some of the gangly sycamores soar to heights of over 80 feet. \nhttp://www.venturacountytrails.org/RecentPhotos/2015-02-03PtMuguSPScouting/IMG_9933.jpg \nAfter a pleasant 3 miles we’ll turn up the Wood Vista Trail (a segment of the Backbone Trail)\, our only major ascent during the hike. \nWe’ll climb steadily for the next two miles\, making long\, looping switchbacks. As we climb higher\, we’ll get a nice view not only of Big Sycamore Canyon and Boney Mountain. \nWhen we reach the Overlook Fire Road take a break and enjoy views of La Jolla Valley. We’ll head south on the Overlook Fire Road\, which follows the ridge that divides Big Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon. Keep your eyes peeled for Anacapa Island\, visible between two hills. \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/1/2/a/600_438465354.jpeg \nAfter a couple of miles on the Overlook Trail we’ll hit the Scenic trail and traverse the ridge above the Great Sand Dune to the prominence shown at top. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/5/7/5/600_438545493.jpeg \nHike is about 9.5 miles with 1100 ft gain and is rated MEDIUM+. See the Hike Rating Guide \nDirections to trailhead \nTake PCH to Sycamore Canyon Rd. Sycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nTurn into Sycamore Canyon toward campground and go to Kiosk. Pay\, park and hang out. Parking was $12 or $14 last time I was there. Credit cards OK (but bring exact change just in case). We’ll be meeting in the main lot near kiosk There is additional pay parking on the beach side of PCH. \nSee also http://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/26205514/438824911/ \n==================================================== \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers.
